For for e I don’t think so okay checking I think we’re good finally sorry about that everyone hi my name is Matthew and this is the visual World investigate La a lab within the north Carina Museum of Natural Sciences and downtown righ’s nature Research Center welcome this is Museum makers

Lot a new streaming show that we’re starting where we talk about science nature technology answer your questions about any of those things or anything really all while playing everyone’s favorite game Minecraft of which honestly I’m still kind of learning but we’ve done quite a bit and I have some

Pretty cool things to show you in there and we’ll get to that soon but first again welcome the north K Museum of Natural Sciences is a worldclass science museum the largest in the Southeast in downtown Raleigh really special it has all sorts of labs inside of it research labs and education Labs

Like the lab that you’re seeing behind me right now and it is free all the state museums within North Carolina are free which makes it really unique and this one is no different we have all sorts of events and classes and camps but you can just come in on any day

Except Mondays close Mondays like today that’s why it’s so quiet um to learn about science and learn about North Carolina and learn about nature this lab in particular the viz lab is pretty unique in fact there isn’t another lab like it in any Museum anywhere as far as I’m known it’s a lab

That teaches science using scientific visualizations what you are looking behind you is is about a quarter of the lab the portion of it that is the maker space the rest of the lab is full of digital exhibits where you can learn about science and nature but this

Portion of the lab is where we make things because we are makers and the we I’m referring to is myself Matthew the manager of the lab and Audrey whom you’ll be meeting very soon here we make robots we make Electronics we do a lot of 3D printing

We do a lot of coding we all the different things that you think of when you think of making things when you think of makers and maker culture we do here and we like to teach it and spread that awareness to everyone because there’s there are so many things that

You can build using inexpensive equipment and inexpensive materials that people aren’t aware of anyone can get started at almost any time making all sorts of things we like to we like to show people what’s possible and teach it to them so if you have any questions about anything like

That as well feel free to ask us because that is our Forte um uh in fact let me show you I’ve got uh I can show you a a little bit more of the lab here s to the lab cam there it is hello everyone you can

See it’s it’s it’s pretty chaotic here the vizlab CU we do lots of things and make all sorts of crazy things but that being said that’s the intro what can you expect from this show well we’re going to be using Minecraft as a hook to talk about the different

Creatures that are in Minecraft because Minecraft has lots of different biomes over 60 biomes and lots of different types of creatures and we can use that to talk about them to talk about the environments to talk about ecology how different creatures interact with their environment and and how we

Might be affecting them but we’re also going to be building things because one of the long-term projects that we’ve started is building this very Museum back let me show you a picture of it so you know what we’re dealing with here this so the Museum of Natural Sciences in is

Composed of two build buildings in downtown Raleigh the nature Research Center which you see there on your left with the giant Globe which is at the moment I believe the second largest of its kind in the world and on the right the nature exploration center both buildings are attached to each other via

Skybridge and in the exploration center you can learn a lot about nature and the nature of North Carolina in particular it’s almost like a little Zoo because it has lots of uh living creatures inside of it the nature Research Center where I currently am is where you can learn the

Science about um how we know what we know and in fact in fact I’m just click on something here in fact that building is composed as you could tell from the photograph of mostly glass on the outside and on the inside so my lab here but also all the

Other labs including the research Labs which span from astronomy to paleontology are all behind glass as well so anyone can come in at any time to see what we’re doing and see what the researchers are doing and in some cases interact with us that makes it extremely unique and and

Special well anyways so we’re building that to scale and we’re going to be doing lots of things with that you’ll see it in a little bit but when we’re done with it we’ll also make it available online for anyone to download download so that you can explore the

Museum outside and inside a digital version of it so without further further Ado why don’t we get into Minecraft here and start some exploring and learning and if you have any questions about anything we’re talking about please enter them in the chat as soon as we see them we will

Answer that okay let’s begin Audrey the coordinator here at the VIS yes um I started here uh about a year and a half ago um and I uh like like Matthew have a background in environmental science and biology that the zombie sound keeps freaking me out

Um so my my interest is primarily in in biology but I like to create stuff I like to make things so that’s why I started out working here very cool why is your lava black on the screen I fixed it okay I had uh I

Had chroma key on oh my gosh I forgot about that yeah so I just turned that off okay so um we are in this cave because the very first creature that we’re going to talk about very first set of science facts that we’re going to go

Over is related to one of I think everyone’s favorite Minecraft creatures what are we going to be talking about Audrey Audrey okay we are going to be talking sorry about the axelos but first we have to find them so I’ll follow you all right here we go be down here somewhere so here we’ve got our Lush cave with our glow Beres Lush cave is probably my favorite um of the of the

Newer biomes the cave up date biomes um I really like the Lush cave the the amethyst is also really nice but Lush caves are really cool especially because they’ve got these guys in them so uh I tried looking around for some Axel but um I uh I ended up having to scoop some

Up so that we could actually have all of the kinds that I wanted to show y’all so first let’s talk about what um what Axel do in Minecraft so we’ve got these These Guys in these underground caves um they have uh a particular power they have

Regen three I believe um and or regen one I can’t remember um and that means that they allow you to um regenerate your hearts when you help them so when you uh connect a leash to them or when you uh protect them from a monster um so axotal in real life also have

Regeneration but their regeneration is um a lot more dramatic I think than the Minecraft regeneration no wait Audrey yeah I don’t see any ex oh sorry there’s one there we go I forgot to drop him so that’s an albino aelott there um this is the one

That you usually see in Minecraft or if you see it anywhere else this this uh pink one here the lucis Axel so we’ve got our albino and our lucis Axel these white ones and the pink ones um these two are not wild type Axel this is what is not what they

Look like in the in the real world they um in the real world they look like more like this like this brown one here um but you uh when there’s pets when there when you uh buy a pet ACC it’s usually this lucis pink color which is like

Albino except they have color in their eyes um oh the the wild type is escaping he’s coming up on you but I was talking about regeneration so um the real life axotal have uh have this ability to regenerate um huge parts of their body so they can grow back their whole their

Whole legs they can grow back um their tails just like uh just like skinks and stuff like that um but they can also regrow up to half of their brain matter what if they lose half of their brain matter they can grow it back which is

Insane to me the the fact that that they’re able to able to live with half a brain long enough to grow another one back so axotal are super interesting for medical reasons but they’re also interesting for Ecology reasons so these guys in the wild are um they live in Mexico they

Live um near Mexico City the District of feral in in Mexico um federal district they uh they’re extremely endangered so they are the most endangered salamander uh in the world which is saying something cuz a lot of salamanders are endangered um here in North Carolina we have an endangered salamander called the

Hellbender um and we have one of those here in the museum um we also have a couple of axotal in the museum I believe in our um in our collection but they aren’t out on out for the public to see they’re for the education for teachers to show um the show special

Groups and why are the Axel autles so endangered in Mexico so they’re super endangered because they live the one Lake that they live in is underneath Mexico City so Mexico City was built on top of the lake where axotal live natively um which means that um people

Are trying to live in the same place where where axotal used to live so you’re building you know your your uh concrete buildings and your um your streets and your parking lots and all that sort of stuff they’re covering up where the axod used to live but um there has always been there’s

Always been people living in that area there have always been um there’s been development in that area in in Mexico City um but previously uh pre- colonialization there um was it was a little bit more um what’s the word for that um it was a little bit easier on the Axel so

Um people were able to live more in uh in conjunction in the same ecosystem as the Axel without destroying the the system that they live in so these guys um you you’ll notice they’ve got these these pretty little um uh sort of they look like feathers on

The sides of their heads um those are actually their gills so um there’s kind of two different kinds of salamanders um one kind is a pond type of salamander which is these guys and then there are the stream type salamanders these are not like um actual biological uh

Definition they’re just sort of a way of of splitting them up but Pawn type salamanders are these ones with the visible gills that are sticking out on the side and um stream type salamanders look more like lizards they don’t have the gills on the outside the gills are

All internal um Pawn type salamanders are able to have these big frilly gills because um they’re staying in the same spot and they aren’t going to get um they aren’t going to get swept away with these big sails on the side of their heads um and also in ponds there’s a lot

Less oxygen there’s a lot less dissolved oxygen in a pond because the water is staying still so you aren’t getting as many bubbles from the water running over things um so they need extra gills and gills that are uh easier to to get oxygen out of the water can’t let him get the

Salamanders yeah okay you’re safe L at you got to protect them yes we will protect them at all costs well that makes a lot of sense I did not know that there were Axel uh variations with more internalized gills but that makes perfect sense so the other thing is that um that’s special

About Axel is that these guys are permanently babies so um this is is a system um called neony uh it just basically means that they stay in this larval aelole stage um for their whole lives they grow up they um get bigger they reproduce they have

More aelole babies and they all stay in this baby stage so it’s the equivalent of if a frog stayed a tadpole its whole life and was was able to reproduce and lay eggs as a tadpole and then have more baby tadpoles and just became a really big tadpole and kept living and living

And living as as a little not quite turning into a frog staying as a tadpole so this is an this is an adaptation so that they can survive underwater for longer um and because uh usually not exclusively but usually this kind of salamander would um when it metamorphosed would leave the

Water would would be a land salamander and these guys can metamorphose but only under really strange circumstances so if they’re super stressed out and freaked out um or if you uh if you keep them on land for like way too long or something like that um do something with their

Hormones you can make them um you can make them metamorphose and then they become this sort of weird lumpy really big salamander eating speaking ofs like oh what happened to oh did you what um what happened to the water uh I don’t know I have water on my

Screen I just don’t see it on your screen oh it’s on my screen it’s just it’s a little faint oh I see okay yeah they can also be injected with that with what is it iodine or something to be induced in the laboratory yeah so obviously there are lots of reasons why

Scientists study Axel AAL they have a lot of really really um unique abilities that would be very V beneficial to us if we could harness mhm we could mimic that in some way so one of the theories for why they’re able to have that amazing regeneration is

Because of this neony this um permanent juvenile stage permanent babyhood um because juvenile animals have a lot more stem cells in them typically um and stem cells are these special cells that can turn into any other kind of cell so if you um when the way that stem cells initially work are with

Um with uh uh uh what are they called fetuses um where we all start out as a bag of stem cells and those stem cells turn into all of the parts that um that we need as an actual alive human so those stem cells become brain cells and

Skin cells and bone cells and blood cells and all that sort of stuff so young animals usually have some of those stem cells left over that are used for growing and um development and all sorts of stuff like that so that’s one of the theories we aren’t entirely sure still why um why

They’re capable of such fast regeneration because they can regenerate in just like a few weeks I mean it it could also and that may be be the reason and they have that the the genes for that have have continued and been passed on because anyone with that ability obviously have

A huge survival Advantage so it it wouldn’t it wouldn’t take it might not take many individuals having that um having more stem cells than usual to have a a distinct Sur survival advantage that makes a lot of sense I wonder then if when they are induced to into their

Adult form that they then have your stem cells at that point uh oh uh oh what’s that oh go oh oh oh oh oh I’m dead okay I didn’t even know I was there okay I didn’t even see him okay that’s fine I’ll grab your stuff oh oh I dropped all

My stuff oh you don’t have keep inventory on no I didn’t know that was a thing whoops okay I’ve got all your stuff okay okay cool I’ll give it to you you’re able to do that that’s cool yes um I only started playing this when I thought that this whole project I’m

Going to kill this skeleton real quick so I’m in oh there’s a bat did the bats attack no okay good some kind of potion oh there’s there’s my stuff I don’t need most of that I just want my axe oh there’s my sword okay oh gosh I’m getting hit again

Where are you I got him really yep okay how do I get more Hearts I you should probably have some food get a get a stack of food where do I get a stack of food just jump into creative and grab grab some here I’ll give you some hold on

I’m just going to give you some steak Axel but I don’t do not eat the aelott they are so endangered okay there’s some steak oh thank you just you just tossed It On The Ground okay uh so I just I guess I should give you some more actually so

That’ll let you regenerate your hearts okay that gave me okay oh oh thank you yes yeah okay I have all my hearts now okay okay and a water bottle all right okay is there anything else um I don’t remember okay I think the only other thing I was going to say was that

Despite the fact that these guys are able to survive um losing entire Limbs and losing most of their brain and all of this sort of stuff they’re still extremely endangered um and it just goes to show that um the change in in an animal an’s environment is extremely dangerous even if that

Animal has adapted to um really difficult conditions well they certainly are cool we love them very much yeah and they’re cute yes they are in Minecraft and in real life more so in real life got a little 3D printed one okay all right um I guess do we head

Back to the museum yes I can I can teleport in this mode right yes you can exactly where drop me May literally drop me so I may die immediately okay and oh where am I oh ah oh we’re in the lab I don’t know why are we in the lab where

Are we no we’re in the we’re on the fifth floor what we are in in the other building just yeah we’re in the NRC okay okay so let’s I’m going to have to do the stairs so I don’t die I’m just going to jump off yeah going I go to are

We going to AR lab let’s go to the front of the billion so we can show off the oh jeez just took a heart um want to show the outside all right without dying yeah um we’ve been playing almost exclusively in creative and Matt especially has only been playing in

Creative so he’s he’s getting used to how survival works okay behold the nature Research Center I showed you the pictures before here I’ll show again real quick so what the building we’re in front of right nows my m so is the one with the sphere on

It okay go back in here and that’s this and it is to scale so I have oh can’t see it yet okay I have blueprints for this building in so I am making it to scale did you make the Rachel Carson Garden is that what this is what’s that

This little Pond over here is that the Rachel Carson Garden no that I just did that for fun okay it’s cute there are lots of little things where I’ve just kind of played around um yeah yeah so this is the scale every block in Minecraft is um known to

Be a meter cube and so I was able to use that put this together and I’m going to actually I’m going to get in creative mode just for the daytime when it’s nighttime when it gets to be more exciting then I’m going to switch to survival so that I can fly and

Whatnot um game mod was it yes creative much better okay so there’s the nature Research Center green roof will go into it and everything and over here is connected via skybridge is the nature exploration center this one is still very much under development as you can see it doesn’t even have a roof

Yet um that can’t be good for specimens no no and it’s hovering over water which I’m going to fix as well there is a river that runs under Raleigh under I want to say McDow Street I think so so there it is nature exploration center nature exploration center is

About I think it’s like 20 years old or so and the nature Research Center is the new one oh is uh is like 12 years old or something like that so this one’s still under development I’m not going to work on it today let speed run over here your research

Center what’s what’s on the tree there oh it’s a little white frog hey h oh that’s from what I was trying to figure out about the leashes oh is it is it stuck up there yes awesome it’s a tree frog yes wait which tree is oh he’s in that one it’s

It’s a white one right it’s a cop’s gray tree frog yeah it’s we have a CO gray tree frog did you make that not on purpose but okay you’re right it is like that that’s fantastic that’s one of our native frogs so we’re in we’re in the Southeast

So we have lots of lots of frogs lots of um lots of tree frogs lots of salamander North Carolina is known as the salamander capital of the world it’s amazing even during the winter time you can go into a stream flip over a rock and find little salamand it is awesome

We have in North Carolina it is the highest um diversity of salamander species on the planet so most of them are in in the Appalachia mountains but there are also a bunch here in the Triangle um those Pond and stream salamanders and only a few years ago actually um one of the

Herpetologists so that’s um scientists who study reptiles and amphibians so like salamanders um who works at the uh Prairie Ridge ecost station discovered a new species of salamander I want to say this was in like 2016 or 2018 something like that um the uh Southern two line salamander someone was asking about have

You ever heard of Conquest reforged I guess that’s a Shader I don’t think so assuming that’s a Shader um yes so uh obviously we’re using we’re using mods and we’re using shaders I believe I’m I’m using uh Unbound uh Matt currently has so what I’m doing while Matt is building the

Museum is I am developing a mod that uh allows us to have all of the creatures that we want to have in the museum um so I’m making some of our robots that we have here in the lab and I’m making some other cool creatures um but we have it

Turned off right now because I have not current the version that Matt has uh is a little bit broken and there are um too many of some things that I made yeah we’ll have to turn that on later um so I was about to switch over

Over to back to survival but I actually want to build a little bit um after I do that then I’ll switch back over because I’m I’m not going to go catch some tropical fish right now and I need some tropical fish so let’s walk into the nature Research

Center much of the architecture of it and the floor plan of it is complete but the exhibits are not so that’s what I’m primarily going to be concentrating on during these streams is building the exhibits and then talking about them while we build them so the

Nature the just call it the NRC it’s four four floors but only three of them are exhibits the fourth one where the green roof is and then office spaces now all those all those spes okay I didn’t realize how many Iron Golems you made I just saw so many in a room

And then there’s a bunch of mob drops so like a bunch of spider string and stuff that’s right okay so when you walk into the NRC this is the front desk here but to the left of it is and can’t tell what it is right now so the left of it

Is a whale skeleton a skeleton of a right whale adult feale female right whale um that actually was pregnant at the time so you can these two blocks here represent the the skeleton of the fetus that was still inside the mother this this whale has a really cool

Story scientists have been tracking it for decades it was very it it was a Goodwill to study because it was easy to identify due to its The Notches on its tail and also it it had lots of calves that’s that’s what a baby whale is called um

Unfortunately it was found dead it had been struck by a boat which is a very common way for whales to die if they don’t die causes as often due to uh boat strikes and that is because well I’m just talking right now so I’m I’m to put in survival mode game mode

Survival oh so I wonder if that little creep the creeper can’t get out of the boat it’s stuck in the boat that’s one of the cool things about boats yeah cool okay yeah we’ll get to that creeper on that creeper special so the reason why

It is it is not uncommon for uh whales to be struck and killed by boats is that whales especially species like right whales like to stay near the coast reason they stay near the coast is because that is where they can easily find their food source that their food

Source is plankton their this type species of whale is a filter feeder and Plankton um Can mostly be found the highest concentrations near near land masses near the coast because they need nutrients to survive as well as sunlight where do they get those nutrients nutrients to do things like build their

Their silica shells well they get that from run off from the land so that’s where they get their nutrients so there are lots of different species that eat plankton that like to stay near a coast including whales and so part of this exhibit includes a little Robo and that Robo

Does not have a creeper in it in real life however it does have a dog in it a sculpture of a dog and oh oh gosh okay yeah I don’t know yeah it will explode still it just can’t leave the boat but I thought it it would

Only explode if it got close to you I mean if you hit it or oh you just did it kill the dog no it didn’t somehow um okay so you just have to get close to it I thought you had to fight it okay okay well as long as a dog’s okay

Yeah um and I’m glad that wasn’t real water so one of the ways that whales can be studied with without actually even seeing the whale at all is by finding their excrement their feces and which is obviously something kind of hard to do in the ocean but if you have something

That has a really good sensor that can smell it out maybe a biological sensor like the nose of a dog they can be trained to detect whale faes floating out in the ocean and then scientists can collect that and then they can learn all sorts of things about that whale where

It’s been what it’s been eating what it stress levels are like whether it’s pregnant all the health of the whale all sorts of things um so that’s why that’s there and then at some point a creeper jumped in and it’s been in there for months and I’m kind of sad it died so

Somehow get another yeah so there’s that um now I’m going to I was actually hoping that some more creatures would come in but I guess because the doors are closed they not going to I’m going to do a little bit of work on we have an

Aquarium and right now it is empty so let me fill it up and I was going to add some Coral cuz I was looking at the yes definitely needs Coral yeah we don’t have there’s no Coral in the um in the real exhibit but there are barnacles but there’s unfortunately no Barnacle block

That I know of well I I thought it was Coral I mean it’s all it’s fake yeah but so yeah I I I I think it needs it absolutely definitely needs something what there okay all right so you’re going to put some Coral in there going to I’m going to go up a

Level and do this go into through the top so I can more easily fill it up with water once it’s been closed off okay if the sound is if anyone notices that the sound is not good the game sound or our voices just let us know there forgetting that I

Can oh the okay bad news Coral dies when it’s not in water oh that’s right it does do that well we can leave a dead coral in there I thought it was right here I’ll leave one dead coral oh okay that’s not where I wanted to come

Out there sorry people I know this is dizzy okay I’ve where’s the open I closed up the glass okay good that out okay now I will some water and so this is this is a fun exhibit maybe one of my favorites I it’s the biggest tank in the museum I don’t

Remember how big it is oh my gosh hundreds of gallons I just thought of something Mt what so back here um behind in in um in fishing inverte it backup there are currently three sea turtles um that we’re using that they’re like right here behind this this exhibit

Okay I bet let me see whether it is reasonable to make a little tub full of sea turtles oh that’d be great yes see if you can do so I I have the space back there yeah good yeah I it’s not quite in the exact right spot but it’s close

Do sometimes have to make compromises with the building design okay I think that’s good all right I’ll add some some coral and then the fish yeah sea turtle that’s a great so this exhibit is for Native fish that are native to North Carolina coast and it includes the pilings from

A from a dock or something and that has um Barnacle creatures sedentary creatures see here what else oh oh what about the no I oh there’s kelp there isn’t help in that I don’t think so a bit realistic there are blocks that these are going to put these dead

Coral blocks in there even though there isn’t dead coral in the exhibit there are these structures that were um man-made for cor reefs to grow on and they sort of look like these blocks yeah and the the Barnacles look kind of like the coral blocks oh wait I’m going to do

It takes up too much space the aquarium in Minecraft um it doesn’t look as big as it actually does in that’s kind of how everything in in Minecraft ends up looking okay that’s fine now let’s get some fish let’s see do I want the fish that’s in a

Bucket tropical fish and a puffer fish don’t forget the puffer fish yes so this this exhibit contains fish saltwater fish a spiny Lobster a puffer fish I think that’s about it so let’s fill just one Puppet Fish I don’t I don’t think people usually keep puffer fishing they’re pretty harsh in an aquarium

Because I don’t remember why well in Minecraft they will attack you if you go too close to them and poison you uh I don’t think that’s so much of an issue in real life um I mean in in the wild they will but in your aqu Arium I don’t

Think that a puffer fish is going to attack you no there are lots of YouTube videos of puffer fish are really cute there are freshwater puffer fish you can get too that one Turtle cool there’s a little tiny tiny species called a pea puffer it’s like the size of a marble

Me why can’t I close that up there we go I have to fix my floor carpeting carpeting back down Okay so let’s that’s supposed to be there okay let’s see how that looks uhoh heard glass breaking yeah that’s me I’m working on my you’re working here oh yeah look at that

Cool no get back in there get back in there don’t hit him well he’s trying to escape no he’s spinning what’s he doing it’s his attack that’s funny okay bud let’s go that’s really funny let’s go let’s go in there go in there so we have three um chemp Ridley sea turtles young

Chemp rley sea turtles that were uh cold shocked um and found off the coast um and the aquarium was taking care of them but they have hundreds of these sea turtles and um they don’t really have the time to take care of ones that are particularly difficult to take care of

Um so we took them over and our vet services team is is uh taking good care of them and they hopefully will be released relatively soon um I hear a monster so the Museum’s done this before um uh sea turtles this time of year will stay close to the

Coast and are usually fine but if the temperature changes suddenly if it gets cold suddenly um they’re um ectotherms which means they’re the temperature of their environment they don’t create their own body heat look at them um so if they get to be too cold then they their metabolism slows down

Everything about them slows down they can die but if they’re lucky enough to get washed up onto a beach and there are helpful people nearby they can sometimes be rehabilitated and we have had um some unusual cold weather during different points of this season season due

To um due to changes in the polar vortex which if you don’t know what that is if youve ever heard of the jet stream that’s this enormous um stream River of air in the sky that that’s beautiful that’s a great way of describing it yeah well the um

Air you if you could see air and water both behave like fluids and there are different streams different rivers of it going at different speeds at different um different elevations and this River of air called the jet stream acts as a fence it holds in the cold polar

Air um and keeps it separated from the warmer air below as we get closer to the Equator that that uh jet stream is a result of the extremely different temperatures between the air at the equator and the air at the pole well if that temperature difference changes if they become more

Similar then that stream doesn’t become as powerful it becomes instead of a tight Circle going around the pole it becomes wavy and if it becomes wavy that means that that cold air can dip down and that warm air can dip up and so sometimes during the winter if you get uh really

Unexpectedly cold air for a few days then that um is usually a result of a the jet stream and it it’s polar air so it can get very very cold and so that’s a really cool thing that our Museum does and back to our vet services um you know

I mentioned that a lot of the Laboratories here are behind glass well we have a vet clinic here in this building it’s a small that clinic but it’s also behind glass and every single day they have animals in there that they’re checking out or helping in some

Way and you can just be a few feet away watching and they’ll talk to you tell you what’s going on and you can talk back to them it’s just an amazing amazing resource again you can just walk right in off the street and uh and watch

In real time or bring your children and have them watch in real time and ask them questions just phenomenal well that looks great Audrey that’s I’m sure much better than what they’re in what they’re in right now I assume is just a plastic tank yes it’s a big tub it’s

Cool that looks great so that is actually going on right now behind this aquarium here at the Museum but you you can’t just go in there but you can see the turtles from time to time when they bring them out into the Vet Clinic and they announce it so you you you know

Because you’ll they’ll announce it and then tell you where to go great okay so that that came out came out pretty well um I need to just the signed of course so let’s see here so I think that’s done I’ll show off the museum a little bit more because this is the

First episode so might might as well so we’re on the first floor of the nature Research Center um right over here it’s much more impressive in real life is the Daily Planet theater so right now we are in that giant globe of the earth saw on the outside it is on

The you can go inside of it it’s actually a giant theater with a giant screen almost so almost like a planetarium but just like like like half of a planetarium and they’re seating which I haven’t put here and they it shows movies constantly not like regular movies but movies made

For it nature related shows but also there are a lot of talks given there researchers and Educators here at the M it’s really cool and you can see it from three floors so you can see it from different uh different viewpoints which is really cool moving this

Way um I’m only going to talk about the spaces that uh that I think you’ll want to know about there are a lot of little spaces just for staff this is this whole area here is brand new this is a new laboratory that’s being built it’s very exciting for a new exhibit called

Dueling dyo so that is is an exhibit that’s been in the news quite a bit the museum was able to acquire these giant uh uh fossils of a Tyrannosaur and a Triceratops that died close together and it looks like they may have had some interaction so that’s why we’re calling

Them dueling dinos but they’re still being uh they’re still being excavated so their story is not yet fully told maybe never will be completely but paleontologists here are going to do their best so when you go into it there’s going to be exhibits on the left and the

Right and then in the middle you’re going to get to this part where you actually get to see the researchers and the fossils and talk to the people there as as they’re Excavating and learning about them so I’m going to I while I’m doing this I’m going to go back into survival

Um but I don’t think that anything’s going to get inside of here that being said and this part I don’t understand I have boy I have seen zombies break down the doors and come in maybe because they’re wooden doors so if I hear that happening I will rush to defend the

Mus continue on through the D dinosaurs lab I think it’s just called the dino lab Golems are over there okay so the first floor these are elevators this is everyone’s favorite room in any Museum the gift shop as you go through these doors oops oh no uh accidentally Place something uhhuh a

Light how do I pick it up um so you I don’t know whether lights can be pick up with a um pickaxe uh you can’t pick it up by punching it probably yeah um but if you have a pickaxe you can break it um or you can leave it until it’s

Creative or you can just break it and oh I see okay oh now I just have prismarine crystals yeah that’s what you used to make those all the ca lanterns you use Minecraft I was using it like a flashlight okay well close that up let’s go up a l hope they don’t fall

Off okay so here on this level of the museum we have a little empty room here this is a the what’s it called educator classroom I don’t remember it just education classroom education classroom that’s just for classes um over here again it’s not fleshed out yet is

The is the um biodiversity lab may be the largest lab in this building this is a really cool lab run by researchers that um study species um species they they track where they go and try to determine where they are using camera traps and GPS locators that’s a really cool lab over

Here is one of the most famous spaces in Museum this is the naturalist Center and this is where you can go in and they have hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of of specimens shells bones taxidermic animals things like that all from North Carolina so if you wanted to learn more

About the Flor and fauna in the state this is a great Hands-On space to do that and they have these really cool tables called Magic tables you can take specimens put them on the table and then it’ll project uh media text videos pictures about that samples on the table

It’s really cool and interactive a great use of of Technology oh uh just went by just ran by this here this is a little island about climate change the polar vortex I was speaking of earlier that we’re experiencing more and more changes in the polar vortex because the um the Northern Hemisphere particularly

The the North Pole is warming faster than any other place on the earth and so since it’s warming faster than the equator is the temperature difference is becoming uh less and less between the two and that’s that’s the reason it’s becoming uh wavy more often and that’s a

Result of climate change the um all the greenhouse gases that have been emitted since the Industrial Revolution find their way to the North Pole that’s where they naturally go and so you have a more of a blanket effect there at the North Pole trapping in infrared radiation causing more Heating

Than Elsewhere on the planet biodiversity lab that is the only research lab on this floor it’s mostly just a n natural Center and then the biodiversity lab there’s the daily planet again let’s go up a level oh this is a this is a space with a there’s a screen in here

And you can control it it’s again like a little planetarium go up a little hopefully not fall off okay there’s a daily planet again this is a genomic laboratory this is a really cool laboratory where they study DNA and genomes there’s a lot of research invol monkeys and sometimes

Humans this is an astronomy lab and I need to flush it out this is the palean uh paleo lab and so some of those uh fossils from the dueling dinosaurs ex are in that lab right now oh you skipped the ant lab oh I I skipped the lab yes this floor this

Is actually our floor has um one two three four Research Laboratories this is the evolution lab where the researcher there the director there studies Evolution through primarily ants we often call it the ant bunch of exhibits in the middle of the floor I’m not going to go over many of

Them I will in the future because there are some really cool ones including some of my favorites and this right here is the vizlab formerly known as the visual World investigate lab so this is where we are right now in fact I am right here and I’m right here I am

Right right there yeah see right there yes that big glowy thing with the eye you may have caught it if not you should uh rewind a little bit uh there’s a big model the top model of the top of the tower from barod door the tower from

The Lord of the Rings with sauron’s eye on it we do a bunch of special events here at the Museum and one of them last year I believe it was was Lord of the Rings themed so we like to make things for events and that one we made Tower is

A 10-ft cardboard Tower with animated eye on top and everything go once you cross once you cross this then you just that there aren’t any exhibit spaces or anything over there oh there’s another lab though so this lab is similar to the viz lab so the viz

Lab I don’t think I I I didn’t fully describe there’s the research labs and then there’s the viz lab and then there’s this which is forly known as a microw world investigate lab now it’s just the investigate lab probably yes it is and it is a Hands-On lab more of like an education

Lab that people can go into so during most of the Museum opening hours you can go into this into my lab uh our lab you can go into the uh investigate lab across from us to do Hands-On science experiments or learn about science and technology various means here we

Go this right here is a big uh Aquarium full of jellyfish moon jellies I think mhm there’s actually a moon there’s actually webcam on so anyone can look that up on YouTube and watch them whatever they want let’s go up so this is so that was the third

Floor this is the fourth floor this is there aren’t any exhibits up here this is mostly offices um yeah I saved your little AEL Auto Garden oh I see that needs to be that needs to be relocated I tried to is is there just one in there

Right now yeah there’s only one in there right now I tried to catch them but it I I failed I think that uh I think that the ECC would really be improved by adding a big huge tank of Axel in it I agree we’ll go out here let talk to the

Director about that roof yes sure it’s they definitely do it so this green roof is really cool it does have plants on it mostly succulents but there’s some grassas as well um and the the the building collects water from the roof and has historically used it

To water some things and actually use it in the bathrooms some cases there’s some fossils up here there’s t tables and chairs this isn’t open to the public to the public except during special events let’s um I’m set spooky up on the top of the nature

Research Center there are also a lot of solar panels which is really cool the building is lead certified oh no is um uh uh go cuz neither one of us has slept in this game I think ever well I slept for the first time when I set a

Spawn point oh yeah well I need to set a new spawn point don’t I yes can you set down a bed for me hold on go away go away I’ll sleep I’ll sleep leave me alone this will happen to you in real life I think they call them headaches ah

Go away go away go yes oh jeez why is it floating bed floating oh it’s floating because those are slabs oh they’re slabs okay that’s why oh I just threw my my food instead of trying to hit it I threw my food at it by accident eating it okay so I can use

Floors I I I I skipped a lot but those are the spaces anyway um I’m not going to go over the other building yet because it’s just there’s a lot left to to build there oh there’s one thing that I’ll mention here that’s cool and that is

This exhibit you see these chains here they’re holding up something really cool let me go down another level it is that exhibit is called patterns by Nature you can see it here I don’t know if you can see my cross yeah we can see the Crosshair oh good okay

So I’m going to yes so this exhibit here it’s this big glass exhibit that’s made up of LCD panels each one is like 6X 6 in or something like that and uh so they’re normally clear see-through but if you apply just a little bit of voltage just Mill volts I

Believe to an LCD panel a little the the the crystals inside do something I don’t remember what but then that panel will become opaque or in Black in this case and so that’s it uses that technique to create animations and there are lots of different animations from rain to to

Fish to Gees there’s sound as well so it’s really cool so you can be under it and it’s it’s doing all sorts of animations and making all lots of sound it’s really cool yeah so those those are the those are the main exhibits so what should we

Do next should we explore some more or should we build something uh yeah I um right now I am I had an idea for playing with the um with the second floor Bridge changing the carpet situation and looking at what that looks like okay yeah I was going to mention

That because I noticed that you can change the pattern a little bit depending upon the way you put it down yeah so I’m I’m using the ceramic um I’m using cyan uh cyan glazed terracotta which has a lot more of a pattern to it with little Minecraft it has yeah it has

A little uh there’s I was deciding between that and this a light gray T glazed uh the carpeting that’s there in real life is very boring yeah um there is but it is patterned slightly yes it’s patterned slightly and then it’s they’re they’re all they’ve all in real

Life have been placed in different orientations um can’t Fly one thing well try that out there I can see some monsters I could do hold on could also do gray glaze that that works actually I think that fulfills the uh creeper wants to get Me this looks like carpet to me oh wow that’s funky I haven’t seen that one this is also glazed terra cotta this is gray glazed so this bridge is cool because it it’s two level you can go inside of it or you can go on top of it on top yeah

Takes a long time to break things sounds but I’ve been playing in creative mode since the beginning wow what a pain oh there’s a gas no it’s not okay sorry saw a sheep and I thought it was a gas that would be cool I know that we

Released a gas a while ago so it was not impossible right going to be day soon yeah so this is the the the top of the bridge has um uh artistic that’s fossils throughout it all like paintings and impr of fossils and it takes you um forward in time

Depending on which way you’re going so if you’re going to the NRC you’re going forward in time and if you’re going to the NEC you’re going backwards in time on the ground when you’re walking on it you see the tracks that were made from different creatures um going back

To um I don’t know maybe the heran maybe before that I don’t remember where you have the just the little tracks or little creatures that would Slither around on the ocean bottom and then at the end at the very end then you’ve got the footprints of I think the person who

Did it which I think is cool there ‘s a sunrise really like this Shader all right I’m going to switch back to creative nope just do this there so much better just fly around yeah that that frog is definitely stuck there that’s great oh there’s a Creeper uh there’s a creeper in the W theater I think the Traer that’s not good I wonder if I could I could uh oax it to the boat let’s see if I can do that great idea see it I see him aquarium do aquarium looks good oh

Not at the Daily Planet at uh at the W theater oh that oh well that’s that’s way too far that’s too far to coax it I think yeah hey Fell all right well I guess why don’t I’ll just go over to the other building and just start building oh this looks really nice bridge is looking really yeah I like that pattern there is a bit of a misalignment between the interior of the bridge and the top of the bridge

Like the top of the bridge is not as wide as oh yeah yeah yeah y it’s carpet all over the ground it’s funny will they eventually go away yeah they’ll despawn there a spider yeah so this is the theater yeah there guy there’s a loading dog

Let’s see where I left off guess I was working on not very exciting to build a wall but it is important for the building this part of the building is really cool um it has uh life-size replicas of I don’t remember what kind of sorod maybe

A I don’t know what kind of pod like a brachiosaur or something like that being chased by some maybe they’re Tyrannosaurus I really should look this up with some flying reptiles of uh codons or something and they’re ro they’re spinning yeah you can see it from the

Outside too you can see it from the street that’s right yes yes you can see the SK skons you can see the replicas you can see the movement off from the outside do some building anyone has just send them our way service we run this lab but we are also

Technically Museum curators not just technically yeah what um like also like in our heart what do you mean I mean we are we do work at a museum yeah I just always I just always thought it was kind of a a funny title because you know I think when most people think

Of a curator they’re thinking of the natural a place like the natural Center where you’re when people turn bells and that’s true or working down in the basement or something our exhibits here in the vizlab are mostly Digital real challenge trying to get the intricacies of these building craft form not just the scale but just trying to make them look the close as possible try to do it justice our nice Building h okay go sorry when I um occasionally you’ll see me pause Minecraft that’s just so I can get out of Minecraft get something in this wall those go up to there it’s going to be that big see something five I’m always unlocking things that I’m never going to use what’s

That three four Five wait something’s not wait maybe three okay no I did okay those are the different flers if you’re if you’re trying to decide something Audrey one thing that’s obvious that can be done is the as is finishing that this the first floor the second floor floor okay we should just

Keep going all right until the the theater obviously that’s taller well there are different parts where it’s where it won’t be like where the whale skeletons are yeah um so like this part here where I am this yeah yeah okay I’m not sure exactly where outs are um that’s where have to

Use the blueprints there for now I was thinking about fixing the bridges the bridges also oh that’s that’d be good too okay so I’m gonna have to take a field trip over to the other side before I do this portion of the wall so I have to quite sure about something GNA pick

Something else see well this this is all this is easy I’ll do this this will be easy oh the floor is also mismatched with the bridge oh yeah this part of the building just buts up against another building so there are not anywhere pretty Bor right here this part of the building is a is a gift shop building has Gift be night time again but I’m not going to switch I’m not going to switch modes because I don’t want to actually have to mine all this stuff that would take forever patience that would be something we could make just a little part of the museum ex entirely in survival awful really awful

I’m going to fix the bridge Okay yeah might have to rename the bridge when you’re done with it does the bridge have a name other than second floor Bridge it does it’s the uh um what is it a Betsy Bennett bridge to oh I knew that the future or Discovery something I think part of it part of

That sign I think is 3D printed but it wasn’t initially but I think something happened to it back in I’ve I’ve really been enjoying Minecraft I always known that it existed but I never played it before I thought it looked silly and I now I get I hadn’t played it in um 10

Years while starting or playing on this world last time I played before now was 2012 so a lot has changed hey Audrey what’s that on your shoulder that’s a giant isopod a giant Marine isopod um they are a deep sea uh invertebrate crustation because um isopods are crustaceans so these are um

A deep sea rly poate or pill buug there’s a bunch of different names for these kind of guys um but their science name is an isopod there in the um in the family isopoda um but the Giant Marine isopod is compared to our uh roly poy that we have

In all over the world really um is a lot bigger these guys are more like a foot to a foot and a half long I believe um or more like 18 in um and they live in the deep sea and they feed off of um various detritus so dead things that

Fell down um I don’t uh one of the the cool things and one of the main things that deep sea animals eat is something called Marine snow which is what happens when um something dies in the ocean and then um it all of its little parts that don’t get eaten by shark

And um other fish and lobsters and whatever um drifts down into the deep ocean um and it looks kind of like snow because it’s white and looks like this this sort of gross particulate um and so they call it Marine snow and that’s where most deep sea animals nutrients come from excellent and

Um so one of the things that she said that I I think is really cool is that those little rly poy or pill bugs or isopods those little creatures that you find under rocks and logs that look like what’s on Audrey’s shoulder right now those are crustaceans just like shrimp those are land

Shrimps and and in fact there’s so much of a land shrimp that they don’t even have lungs they have little gills MH so they can only survive if they are uh are in enough dampness if if it’s damp enough in their environment which is why you find them under rocks and under logs

And things like that um they need to have a little bit of wet soil they come in a huge variety there’s also aquatic isopods freshwater aquatic isopods that live um that you might run into it ponds and things like that sense some of them if you haven’t really

Come across them before some of them are really cool because they can curl up into perfect little balls those ones are the most most of the terrestrial isopods um in North America and Europe roll up to in into little balls there’s actually one Marine isopod um I can’t

Remember this is this is what I did my research on in college but I cannot remember what what its name was but there is a marine isopod a little one a little rly poly that lives in the ocean and can still curl up into a little ball and they’re so cute oh

Jeez don’t I don’t get why some of the creatures that spawn just spawn in midair and then fall to their death I just saw it happen to a spider I thought it was just to the ones you created but I guess every anything can spawn anywhere pretty disturbing now we’re seeing this Museum

Here it’s nighttime in the game seeing a museum at night in real life being inside of it it’s just as cool as you would think it is most of the lights turn off not all of them so walking by something like a blue whale skeleton

Is cool and most of the things that talk also don’t turn off and the ones that are um movement activated will sometimes turn off and it’s really freaky today is Monday which means that the museum is closed so normally the viz lab would be open to the public um if

The museum was open so tomorrow we will be open to the public and you can come in and talk to us and talk to our volunteers and um see all of our exhibits and touch everything we’ve got out here um and ask us questions in real

Life or watch us play Minecraft in real life sorry just a great relaxing game even even if I’m doing something that’s just completely monotonous still enjoy and like the sound I’m using various mods and a Shader just to make it look better primarily and I’ve done some fun little tweaks to it as

Well one of the big mods that we’ve played with some but haven’t nothing is built in it right now is uh the Chisel and bits mod that allows us to make smaller um smaller models inside of inside of Minecraft yeah and also yeah so that’s one of the challenges is building many

Of these exhibits because they’re small most of them are smaller than a meter cube or have details that are smaller than a meter um so aside from chisel and bits we’re also working with block bench to create whatever we want at a much smaller or much higher

Resolution that’s a lot of of what we use like the uh oh I guess the pra because you don’t have the mod on you can’t see the prusa in the vizlab oh yeah that’s too bad one of our 3D printers I made a model of one of our

3D printers um in block bench and put it in the vizlab we go this building is a very classic looking Science Museum lots of lots of stone it’s the most visited it’s often the most visited attraction North Carolina here and it’s not just it’s not just these two buildings there other like satellite

Locations like uh like the Prairie Ridge Eco Station where that salamander was discovered or describ was discovered where at uh Prairie Ridge which one what are you talk the southern two line salamander I talked about it when we were talking about the Axel oh there’s an Enderman did you say it was discovered

There yeah it was described there oh really oh that’s cool by Dr Brian Stewart was how much I was paying attention so museums are really special we don’t just oh yeah there’s the Ender Enderman stop moving my things um museums are not just I mean they’re special because they house

Knowledge or like libraries in that way um and they house artifacts but they also actively research all museums actively research whatever their their topic of focus is and for us it’s it’s North Carolina and science so that’s that encompasses a lot so we have a lot of researchers and a lot of research

That goes on very valuable um very valuable to society and again the fact that this one is free and that you can just just walk right in to interact with the exhibits or the people that work here and ask them whatever you’d like is pretty phenomenal and if

You want to do more than that you can I mean aside from working here you can there are internships there are volunteer opportunities there’s classes yeah classes there’s so much to do and learn many people just visit museums when they’re when they’re children because it’s a school trip and then again when

They’re adults with their children because it was a school trip and then as as Grandparents with their children’s children um but museums are always doing things I mentioned the the Lord of the Rings thing that was a special event we have special events on pretty much maybe every single month that one

Was that one was a particularly cool one because it’s uh one of the types of events that we have we have events for everyone but then we also have special adult only events where it’s at night and there’s food and alcohol and things so really people of all

Ages you if you like science if you like nature if you like nerdy things Museum like ours are really great place to visit hang out at and learn from so I see there’s a question in the chat do you guys have a plan for how you’re going to display information with

The exhibits yes yes so um obviously the little signs within Minecraft are not nearly enough um I’m one of the mods that I have allows you to add images so like you could put up a a paint like putting up a painting except it’s a it’s a JPEG from a a photograph

That you took so for all of the exhibits I’ll put up uh information from that exhibit because every exhibit in real life has a has like a a a card next to it that explains what it is I’ll have that that explains the exhibit and then

I’ll probably also put an image of the of the real exhibit itself so you can see what it would look like what it what it’s supposed to look like in real life that’s a that’s a good question absolutely because I I it would be really cool if this if this digital

Version of the museum is one that you actually can learn things from so that’ll be our goal and we’ll use block bench to create um all of the animals that are inside the exhibit the exhibit I think is technically is or can be classified as like a small or mediumsized Zoo because

We have just hundreds and hundreds of animals many of them are what you would expect fish lizards snakes amphibians but there are some there are some unique things too I think maybe our most unique um animal exhibit lives on the fourth floor of this building the nature exploration center there is a butterfly

Conservatory so it’s like this big indoor Greenhouse it’s not that big but it’s an indoor Greenhouse that has lots of butterflies in it that kind you would you would expect to find like owl butterflies and Bloon waros things like that but then it also has a

Sloth that has been there for a long time so you can come into you can go into the Butterfly Conservatory um and see and get get pretty close to this live adult sloth and Audrey has made one in using blockbench and it is fantastic so once we build the living

Conservatory uh the sloth among maybe some other animals we can add to yeah to make the museum as alive as it really is yeah or close to as alive as it really is we can’t uh we can’t bring in all the guests yeah we will create ourselves though and

Some of the other um staff here and they’ll they’ll be interactive in some way like NPCs that’ll be great well this stream’s been going on for a little while I think we’re going to keep doing this for about another another 10 minutes all right and then I’ll it call it a

Day we’ll do it again this week um we’re going to be doing this as often as we can um we’re we need to come up with a regular schedule and we will but so if you if you want to watch future ones you can this is this has been this is inside

Of a playlist that you can like And subscribe and do the notification Bell and all those things be alerted to when we’re going to do this again well we’re going to be doing this for a long time because it’s going to take a long yeah

It’s going to take a long time to build all this but I think is worthwhile and it’s pretty fun so if anyone has any final questions this would be the time to ask them it could be about anything both Audrey and I are backgrounds are in Natural Science is

That’s what our degree is in environmental science um but uh we also have a lot of experience with technology and I’ve I’ve I’ve been working here at this museum for the past don’t remember 12 or 13 years or something like that beautiful is it morning oh no it’s going to be night

Again I thought was so there is a one block difference between the NEC and the NRC in terms of the floors um oh is there I wasn’t even trying to match them um so I’m thinking I can and add some steps up to the bridge maybe

Okay well yeah okay yes I I had to redo the plans for this building a couple times because I kept getting the scale the height off mhm are you choosing what block is used for each in real life material entirely based on looks yeah we

Trying to match it as closely so I’m not not matching it based on what the Rock actually is in real life so the quartz is used in the building marble is used in the building I’m more concerned with whether it visually matches now I’m not going crazy I’m not using like wool or

Powder blocks to build things with I am sticking with hard materials but um I do I am I I am trying to make it match as closely as possible to the real thing though sometimes I do make compromises for example the glass in this building all the

Windows I’m going to set it to be day all the windows in this building have a have a green tint to them a really obvious green tint in real life of course there are green blocks and green stained glass in the game but it’s super

Green and I just I I think it looks a little too weird a little too cartoony so I bet Enderman did this so um I’m using just uh clear and slightly tinted blocks but we are we are trying to stay through to what it is in real life um I

Think what I ended up using on the third floor Bridge oh I didn’t actually end up using oh yes I did I have um some dead coral to represent the um the granite because it looks a lot like the the type of granite that we’re using in the on this

Bridge and the the half slab the granite half slabs here are also they Gran it um but they look more like the sort of terracotta that the the bridge is made out of is the bridge this red though it’s supposed to have tiles on top of it

Right but we don’t have those tiles built so it’s supposed to have tiles on top yeah it’s supposed to have so like the the grout is this red but then you’ve got the tiles with the different Footprints and stuff right but we don’t have those tiles it’s more of a yeah like a

Concrete thing thank you I appreciate that Jim one the the website for the museum is natural sciences. org and of course you’re in the YouTube uh uh you’re on the YouTube page for it so you can see more of it either of those locations most of the YouTube videos

Right now are from live streams from science cafes and things like that um events but there are plans for more content in the future and this is one of those plans what am I doing here add more to this wall so this this series is going to be I

Think a lot different from most gamer series we’re going to focus on games like Minecraft where you there are lots of opportunities to talk about science and nature um and that’s going to be the focus of it not necessarily trying to trying to win any games

Or get the most amount of hits or speedrun a level or anything like that this is more meant to be a place to have a have a conversation about anything that anyone wants to talk about just like you would if you actually came into the museum and had

Questions for the people that work there Minecraft is a good fit because there are lots of different types of animals and over 60 different biomes which is like a like a habitat so there are lots of opportunities to talk about things in the digital world in this
