[1.16-1.17] CUSTOM BIOME Data Packs 1: Making A Biome!

Hello i’m waffles or better it might be hard to see me or tell what’s going on right now because i’m standing in a custom biome that i made in this video that has constant blizzards and snowfall here’s an example of the same custom biome but without particles and at daytime

And as you can see i’m generating icebergs on land for these cool ice mountains and the water and sky color have been changed from the default minecraft water and sky color if you want to learn to create your own custom biome like this then just keep watching

I’m sorry i haven’t released a video in a while i’ve been working on other projects for example as you can see i’ve been working on developing portals for um traveling between custom dimensions and so that’s almost done so there will be a video about that soon

But now it’s time to actually work on the custom dimensions so for this i think um since i said i’m only going to be working on the multi-noise dimension right now i think i’m going to actually just delete all of the other dimensions that i made in the last video

So now i’ll just be focusing on um this dimension which is just called defrost and it’s the multi-noise type so to figure out where the folder needs to go for um for the custom biome just open up the vanilla world gen folder which you can download from slicedlime’s

Github which i will have a link to in the description as i did before and this is actually not in the dimension or dimension type folders it’s in the world gen folder then the biome folder so as you can see here’s all the different biomes that are in vanilla minecraft

But we’re going to want to make our own so for that we’re going to go back to our namespace and create a new folder named world gen and then in world gen a new folder called biome so in this biome folder uh you want to create

A new file and name this whatever you want your biome to be called and then dot json so i’m going to name mine icy wastes because i’m going to create like a snowy ic just like flat barren area and then dot json so basically you just want to

Create these two curly brackets and the first thing you’re going to want to type is in quotation marks depth and then a colon and this is a value that basically determines if it is an ocean or not so negative values will be an ocean and positive values will be like

Land so i’m just going to make it 0.1 because i want it to be like a just a plane’s biome and then next you want in quotation marks again then scale and then a colon and this will determine like how amplified your biome is so for example shattered savannah would have

A um a higher scale because it’s like a really tall biome and maybe planes would have a pretty low scale value so i’m going to make it 0.12 and then i’m also going to put a space between these uh the values in the colon i don’t know if

That’s necessary or not but i just think it looks nicer and then the next thing you’re going to want is precipitation and a colon after that and again this needs to be in quotation marks and then this either needs to be um none rain or snow and so if you put none

When it rains in the world uh the sky will just go darker like uh in a desert and no rain will actually fall if you put rain like most biomes you’ll see the rain particles when it starts to rain and if you put snow uh you’ll see the

Snow particles when it starts to rain if the precipitation type is snow then uh the mobs like rabbits that spawn in this biome will be their snow variants so i’m gonna just say snow then next is category um and this can be a large selection of different things

So it can be beach desert extreme hills forest icy jungle mesa mushroom nether ocean plains river savannah swamp taiga the end or none and i couldn’t find anywhere what this actually does but you should just put it as whatever your bio most closely fits into so i’ll just put icy because that’s what

All the snow and cold biomes in minecraft so then the next thing is temperature temperature and from what i can tell uh this is a scale from 0.0 to 2.0 0.0 being the coldest and 2.0 being the warmest so for example the snowy tundra is 0.0 and badlands is 2.0 and what this

Controls is like grass color so the higher the temperature the more dead the grass looks um so like more brownish and the lower the temperature the um like normal and then once it gets colder it looks like kind of like a frozen color like frozen grass

So i’m going to set this to 0.0 because i want my biomes grass to look really cold uh and i don’t think it’s only grass i think it’s also like other foliage like vines and leaves and also the tall grass blocks if the temperature value is high enough

Any snow golems in the biome will take damage like in a desert and then temperature modifier um and this is either none or frozen and so i’m just gonna put frozen for mine and then the next is downfall and what this determines is also the foliage color just like uh temperature up here

Except this basically determines how much like rain and stuff the biome gets so it determines like how bright the grass is so for example uh planes has a downfall of 0.4 and a temperature of 0.8 which gives it like a normal average looking grass color and badlands has a temperature of 2.0

And a downfall of 0.0 which means it is very hot it gets no rain and that’s why the grass there looks very dead uh but the jungle has a downfall of 0.9 and a temperature of 0.95 which means it’s pretty hot there but it also gets a lot of

Rain and that’s why the grass is so bright if the downfall is above 0.85 fire will burn out faster so i’m going to set my downfall to 0.5 because that’s the same downfall as the snowy tundra and that’s basically the closest biome to what i’m making and

Then down here you want to put player spawn friendly so that’s player spawn friendly and this determines how likely a player is to spawn in this biome so for example you’re a lot more likely to spawn in the planes than you are to spawn in the badlands so this is

Either true or false i guess i’m going to make this true since it’s not a biome i’m going to use in the overworld i don’t think that changes much so then next you want creature spawn probability and this is going to determine how likely passive mobs are to spawn in your biome

So this is from zero to one and the way it figures this out it’ll generate a random number to spawn the creature and if that number is less than this value it’ll spawn the creature so if you make it zero it’ll basically never spawn a creature

And if you make it one then it will spawn a lot of creatures so i’m going to set this to like 0.3 maybe because i want creatures to be pretty rare in this biome but i still want them to like exist i just realized i made a mistake here uh

You don’t want quotation marks here it just needs to be either true or false without quotation marks sorry about that so then next is the biome effects which are actually pretty cool and are necessary to make it feel like you’re really in a different place so

You just want to type effects and then a curly bracket then in here there’s several different color options you can choose and the first one is fog underscore color and basically this number needs to be a decimal color number so if you go to a website like this where you can get a

A decimal from a color and then you mess around with this a bit to get the color you want so maybe i want like a kind of greenish blue fog like this then you just copy this decimal color and paste it here and this will determine what the fog in your dimension looks

Like so in the distance in any world there is some fog so this is what you’ll see like near the bottom of the sky and then these next two are optional which is foliage color and this will determine like how leaves and vines and the tall grass blocks look but if you

Don’t specify this then it’ll only rely on the temperature and downfall values that you set so i’m going to specify this and i’m just going to make it white because i want the trees to be white like they have snow on them i don’t know how good that’ll look but

I’m just going to test it for now um but as i said you don’t need foliage color and you do not need grass color um because that also can be specified by temperature and downfall but i’m going to set this to the same white color and then next is sky

Color and this is mandatory again you’re going to need to put sky color but this should be pretty similar to the fog color the main sky will be the sky color but down near the horizon where there’s fog it’ll fade into fog color so it wouldn’t make sense for these to

Be very different colors so i’m just going to copy the fog color and paste it in here and maybe make the sky color like a little bluer maybe there we go i think that’s good perhaps yeah i’ll make this the sky color but it’s going to be nighttime so you won’t

See the sky color anyways because as i specified in my dimension type uh it’s always midnight but i’ll make the sky color that greenish color that i just chose and then next is water color and this will determine um what the color of water in this dimension looks like

So it’s bluish in most biomes but in like the swamp it’ll be kind of greenish um but i want my water to be like pretty white maybe maybe this color-ish because i want it to look kind of frozen i forgot to put a coal in here and then water

Fog color and this will determine what the fog will look like underwater so just like the regular fog color this is what the fog in water looks like which is basically what it applies under water kind of further away from you or towards the horizon so i’m gonna maybe

Make this a little lighter and see how that looks i don’t know if it should be lighter or darker i haven’t really tested that but you’ll see when i test it so you’ll be able to see whether lighter fog or darker fog than the sky in water is better and then the

Last color thing you’ll want to add is grass color modifier and what this does is it’ll either change the grass color to be like a swamp or a dark forest um so you can put swamp or dark forest or if you want you can put none so i’m

Just gonna put it on because i don’t want to make it either of those so in this next part again is optional but this is particle and this will determine if you have particles just floating through the air in your biome so you want to put it inside curly brackets

And then in quotation marks options and then a colon and in curly brackets type and then colon and then next you want to put the type of particle so you can basically put any type of particle that you can spawn in with the slash particle command so for example you can do

Um minecraft crimson spore which is what you’ve got in the crimson forest um or you could do something like minecraft block name and then like snow block so i believe this would create the particles that you would get from breaking this block or if you did minecraft dust then you could do

R and g and b and scale specify the color of the particles and how large they are but what i’m going to do is i’m going to make it falling dust and then i’m going to make the block type snow block and what this will do is make it so

In the air there will be um basically snow block colored dust falling from the sky so it’ll basically look like snow that’s falling at all times and i think that’d be cool one thing that i had completely forgotten about um when i had originally started making custom dimensions and biomes and things

When that was uh originally available about a year ago is that you actually cannot do um the falling dust or block or item particles for some reason which is what i was planning on doing before i remembered that it doesn’t work either it doesn’t work or the way to do it correctly

Is not documented anywhere because i can’t find the answer so instead i have changed the particle type to the spit particle which sounds pretty gross except it basically looks like a bunch of really big falling snow particles as you’ll see in a few minutes and i actually

Like that a lot because it looks like a blizzard and then after this um curly bracket you’ll want to say probability and i’m just going to choose 5 because that’s how often i want the particles to show up but you can mess with this and figure

Out what the best probability for you is hello this is me lady run recording and i came back when everything was done and realized i made a mistake here there does not need to be a comma here and this needs to be a value between 0

And 1 if you are doing particles so i’m going to change it to 0.5 and that will work so then the next section of this file which is still optional but i’m going to include it anyways is music and mood sound and ambient sound and addition sound

So for the example i’m going to use the crimson forest biome and if you go to the official minecraft wiki you can see all of the sounds that play in this biome so if you look at the crimson forest file in the vanilla world gen file that you can download from

Slicedlime’s github you can see that for music it has minecraft music nether crimson forest which is the music that can play in the crimson forest because in the nether that’s brown specific but if you go to a biome like the plains you can see it doesn’t even have

Um it doesn’t even have a music option and that’s because in the overworld you don’t get biome specific music so in a later video i’ll probably go into making custom music to play in your biome but for now i’ll just be showing you how to add music that’s already in the game to

Your biome here’s an example of some of the music that can play in the crimson forest bowled of the cats by c418 and then the next option is if you look in this file um there’s also the mood sound and if you go all the way down here you can see

That these are basically the nether version of cave noises so if you go to the planes file the mood sound is ambient cave which is the official name for the cave noises that play when you’re in caves but here we’ve got crimson forest mood which are these mood sounds so [Applause] And and then lastly there’s ambient sound and addition sound so ambient sound is this ambience that plays on loop in the crimson forest then addition sound will be added to the loop like for example so these basically will be played at the same time as the loop and basically add to the ambience

So the next few options as i said are ambient sound and this will just play whatever sound you put here on loop so this is an example um it’s what plays in the crimson forest but you can put any other sound here or any other custom sound that you have

To make it loop but since i don’t want any ambient sounds in my biome i’m going to delete this and then another option is music that needs a curly bracket like this and in here um you’re going to put um sound and then a colon and then in quotation marks the sound

You want to use and again this is the sound from the crimson forest and then um min underscore delay and then a colon and this number is i believe the minimum amount of ticks which is a 20th of a second can go between it starting another song and so by default

That is 12 000 which is 10 minutes so it cannot play two songs in 10 minutes and then max underscore delay and then a colon oops i forgot a comma there and then this is the maximum amount of time we can go without playing a song

And by default that is 24 000 or 20 minutes and then next is replace current music and then this is either true or false the default is false and this basically decides like if there is already music playing will this event change what music is playing but again

I don’t want music in my biome so i’m just going to delete all of this then the next thing you can do is um additions sound as i said this is to add something to the loop so you’ll probably only want to use this if you are using a loop but this needs

Curly brackets and then you’re going to want to say what the sound is and then here is the default sound for the crimson forest but again this can be whatever sound you want and then the other option is tick chance which i believe is the chance it has to

Play one of these every tick and the default is 0.0111 and i’m not sure if that means this is 1.11 but i think that makes sense because that would mean every second it has about a 20 chance to play one of these editions or actually that would be 22

I think but since this is what the default is it’s probably fine to leave it like this and i probably will add something like this eventually to the frost when i have custom sounds which i will do eventually but i don’t have that yet so i’m just going to delete it

So then the next option is something that i actually do want in my bio mood sound and basically what this will do is play like the regular cave noises uh so that’s what i want it to generate so the sound that i’m going to choose is minecraft ambient.cave and this will play the

Minecraft cave ambient noise and then next is tick underscore delay and this will determine like how often it’s able to play the cave voices and by default this is six thousand and i believe what this means is it can play a cave noise uh once every five minutes

Because six thousand ticks is five minutes in real time and then the next option is block search extent and this determines where in the area around you it can play the noise this number defines a cubic area the sound can be played in but the dimensions of the cubic area

Are not what the number is it’s two times that number plus one so the default is eight which means the area it can play this noise in is 2 times 8 so 16 plus 1 so it can play this noise in a 17 by 17 area around you

And then last is offset and i’m not exactly sure what this does i couldn’t really find an answer anywhere but what i assume it does is uh it adds an additional offset to where it can play the noise either that or it just determines the rarity of

How often it’ll play the noise but the default value is 2.0 so that’s what i’m going to make it so next you need to put the surface builder and make sure you’re in the right place it needs to be after this curly bracket but before this last curly bracket

You need to type surface underscore builder and then a colon and then you need to specify what surface builder you want to use and that determines what block the ground is made of so for example say i want to go to desert the top block is sand and under that is sand

And anything underwater is made of gravel and in ice spikes the top block is made of snow any blocks below that are made of dirt and underwater blocks are made of gravel if you want you can also make your own so what you need to do to create your

Own is in this world gent folder you want to create a new folder called configured underscore surface underscore builder and then in this you want to create a new file i’m just going to call it ic wastes dot json so you’re going to want two curly brackets an inside config

And then a colon another curly brackets and then top underscore material in quotation marks colon curly brackets then quotation marks again capitalized name and then colon and then just the name of the block so i’m going to just say um minecraft snow underscore block and then you just

Want to copy all of this and add a comma and then paste it and then change top material to under material and then change this to what you want your under material to be so basically what’s under the ground and i think i’m just going to keep this as

Snow block i think it won’t i think i want it to be snow block all the way down into the ground and then you’re just going to want to paste it again and make sure you add a comment here and then this needs to be changed to underwater material and since this is

Usually just minecraft gravel i’m going to keep it as gravel because i feel like i should lastly after config you want to type type like this and then a colon and then here there’s a list of different types you can use um so all of these will basically

Change how the biomes surface generates two of the important ones are frozen ocean will make icebergs generate uh even if it’s not an ocean they can generate on land eroded badlands will make buttes which are those big uh stained clay pillar things and so these are all the options you

Have you can do badlands basalt deltas default eroded badlands frozen ocean giant tree tiger gravelly mountain mountain nether another forest nope shattered savannah soul sand valley swamp wooded badlands so i’m going to choose minecraft and then frozen ocean because i want there to be icebergs and so this will make icebergs generate

On land so then make sure that you save the file and then go back to your biome and here for surface builder you can put any of the surface builders that you can find in the vanilla world gen file and there’s a lot of these also for example that would be minecraft

And then frozen ocean if you want it to generate like a frozen ocean but instead what i’m going to do is put the namespace which is the name of this folder here or frost and then icy wastes because that’s the name of my surface builder

So the next thing you want to do is type carvers and then a colon and then some curly brackets and this section determines which caves generate in your world so there’s two options uh you only need air if you’re doing a normal biome that’s just like normal solid ground uh

But you can use liquid if you want like underwater caves that are filled with water so i’m just gonna type air and then colon and then you need square brackets and i want both ravines and caves to generate in my world you need minecraft cave to generate normal caves

And then you can just add a comma and come down a line and add a minecraft canyon to add canyons which most people call ravines and this will just generate the normal overworld caves there’s another option minecraft nether cave as you can see but i don’t want those to generate so

I’m going to leave that out and you can also create your own carvers if you want but i’ll go into that later so again if you want to generate an ocean biome you can go down here and do the same thing but with liquid and then minecraft underwater canyon and

Underwater cave to generate underwater ravines and caves but i do not want that so i’m just going to get rid of that and i’ll leave it as this so then next you’re going to want to add another comma here and type features and here you add square brackets and inside of those

You’re going to want another set of square brackets and you’re going to copy and paste this nine times so you have ten of these in total so one two three 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 and make sure to delete this last comma and if you don’t want to generate any features

You can just delete all of these but if you do want to generate features you need to have all of these square brackets even if they’re empty up to the one you want to use so if i only want to use this one i could delete all of these ones below it

But i would have to keep these in the top and that’s because each of these square brackets corresponds to a different thing the first is raw generation and um that is used by things like the uh the small end islands so in the small end islands biome

You can see it uses the first square bracket doesn’t have any before it and it uses the end island decorated feature which creates the small end islands and the second square bracket is for things like water and lava lakes and as you can see in the plains

The second square bracket has the water lake and the lava lake then this this third square bracket uh is one that i’m going to use it’s used for icebergs and also the rocks that generate in the tiger biomes um but i’m just going to copy these to icebergs that are in this third

Bracket as you can see um and just paste them in my third bracket like this and this will make it so different types of icebergs generate in my biome this next square bracket here which is the fourth is for generating underground features and that includes in the planes the amethyst geode in 1.17

Which doesn’t exist in 1.16 yet and monster room which is the dungeons with the little spawner and the four chests on all sides and this fifth square bracket right here um that includes uh surface features like for instance in the end it includes n spikes which are the obsidian

Pillars that have the end crystals on them and in deserts it includes desert wells now actually it includes a blue ice in the frozen ocean biome so i’m going to put that in mine and this next square bracket is not used in any biomes but the minecraft wiki says

It’s for strongholds except strongholds are a structure and that goes in the structure section so i’m not exactly sure what this is for the seventh one here is for underground ore features so as you can see in the planes that includes um coal iron gold redstone diamond lapis but also things like

Uh gravel sand and clay disks which generate underwater and gravel and dirt patches as well as granite diorite and andesite patches so you can go ahead and copy all of these features if you want to have different ores and things but i don’t want any ores at the moment

I might add ores later the existing ore features um copper lapis diamond redstone gold iron and coal will only generate in stone since i’m going to make my dimension eventually have ice instead of stone i don’t want to use any of these so i’ll go over how to create custom

Features in a later video which will include how to create new ore patches and stuff like this then the eight square bracket is for things like nether ores and um other stuff like that so for example that includes the basalt blobs and blackstone blobs and also um glowstone

And brown and red mushrooms as well as like the lava springs that generate in the nether the ninth one is for things like trees and flowers and other vegetation so like flower patches and also different grass patches so as you can see down here it’s got like pumpkin patches

And also the plains vegetation and the plains flowers but it’s also got lava and water springs and in 1.17 it’ll also include the glow lichen that will generate in caves and i don’t want to include any of that but you can of course if you want then you need to put spawners and

I’m not going over mob spawning in this video because it is too complicated so i’ll make a second video on that but this is where you would have mob spawning um however you do need to add fields they can just be blank though so you’ve got monster creature ambient

Water creature water ambient and miscellaneous you need to put monster and then a blank square bracket and then creature and blank square bracket ambient and then a square bracket water underscore creature and then a square bracket water underscore ambient and then a square bracket and misc and then a square bracket

Then another comma after spawners and finally you want to say spawn underscore costs and this is basically for limiting mob spawning but most of the biomes do not have this so i’m just going to leave it empty like this you can now just save the biome so make sure you go

And save the file but now i need to actually make it generate in my world so i’m going to go back here and i’m going to replace the snowy tundra with my new biome which is frost and then i see underscore wastes so i’m loading up my data pack i’ve

Already saved all the files i’m just gonna paste it make sure it’s selected and then press done create new world proceed so i spawn in as a desert but if i do slash execute in frost the frost run tp my location it’ll teleport me into the frost um so

I’m currently in a frozen ocean biome if you look at my debug screen and over here is an ice spikes biome if i do slash locate biome and then frost icy wastes which is the biome i’ve just made it’ll come up with the biome and i can teleport

To it and here i am in my new biome you can see on my debug screen that i am indeed in the icy wastes biome um but as you can see um it’s just this flat area and it’s got icebergs on land because of the features that i set it to have

And it’s got normal caves if i just switch into spectator mode you can see it’s got normal caves here except for these ice patches which i believe are from the iceberg uh however another thing is there isn’t any mob spawning because i didn’t set any mobs to spawn

Another thing to notice is if i go back to this ice spikes biome i can um break down a few blocks and the top block is a snow block but everything under it is dirt before it leads to stone uh but if i go back to the icy waste biome

And i dig down the top few blocks are all snow all the way down to stone we can you can see these giant piles of ice that are actually icebergs on land and everything is relatively flat i might actually try to make the biome a little bit flatter later

But as you can see just walking around this uh the watercolor is whitish yeah as you can see as it’s flowing it goes from blue to this whitish color because i specified that the watercolor should be whitish uh i wonder can you see the fog color in the water

Yeah the fog in the water is uh slightly lighter than regular water since it’s nighttime you can’t see the sky color all right here we go i’ve loaded up another world with a version of the data pack that makes it so it’s not always nighttime in the frost

So that’s a snowy waste biome right here and i’m in an ice spikes biome as you can see when i go over here the sky and fog color actually change which is interesting so this is my biome now using the spit particles instead of the following dust particles

And it’s really hard to see anything in this biome which i actually really like because it adds a lot more difficulty so for example you can barely see there’s a ravager right there if i were just walking along like this i wouldn’t be able to see it at all so for example

Playing in survival you can barely tell where anything is that’s trying to attack you and i think that adds a um just a good amount of extra added difficulty to this biome for when i do eventually make mobs start spawning in it that’s it for this video if you have any
