world generation which is in my opinion one of the best features quite literally ever it’s incredible The cave generation the mountain generation well today we got lady agnes henrik and jasper and they’re going to be talking about the cave generation as well as textures and other things related to the caves and cliffs update so hopefully you guys enjoyed the video if you can do me a real one well i’m agnes and today big congrats to lady agnes on her promotion to game director Congrats lady agnes in my colleagues jasper and henrik are going to talk about world generation in the caves and cliffs update we’re going to talk about the new caves cave biomes and mountains i hope you will enjoy it when we make a new update like caves and Cliffs it’s a long process i would say we start about one and a half year before the planned release at least um and we start of course just defining a theme but quite early it’s time to decide approximately which features we want in the update so one thing so she made An interesting point and i think a lot of you guys already knew this but they start planning these updates well before they even mention them so i’m sure they planned the caves and cliffs update probably in the early stages of the 1.16 nether update so just to give you an Idea of how soon they start preparing these updates and brainstorming a year and a half i thought it used to be three years quite honestly but at least a year and a half which is crazy we work with this for example player styles and identified quite many players actually we also Think it’s important to find a balance between reward features and journey features so journey features they are features that improve the journey maybe when you are looking for a reward and it can for example be new bios like the lush caves and the gypsum caves and reward features they are more like Actual rewards the things you’re searching for it could for example be a new mob or a block that you you can use for something cool and we have learned that when an update have a really good balance between these two different kinds of features that often is a fun fun update and fun Is i mean that’s the ultimate goal which should be fun and lots of players like hello i’m glad lady agnes talked about that because it makes me remember how i felt about 1.11 the exploration update i’m not sure how many of you guys were playing minecraft back then it was like I don’t know five or six years ago but the exploration update had everything that i wanted in an update it had the woodland mansion which i know it didn’t really age too well it looks a little outdated right now but back then it had everything i wanted had new Enemies i had new loot you know an incentive to explore a new territory a new area a new structure it was a big adventure a very risky and dangerous one but it was so much fun and i’m glad to see that that’s their main focus at least in this update hopefully you Know they continue with that direction we really wanted the mountains to feel like more spectacular more dramatic like add more contrast to the minecraft world we wanted the mountains to look a bit more like real world mountains of course in a minecrafty way but still really feel like epic they Nailed it like i’m still in awe with how majestic these mountains look now looks straight out of skyrim like this is elder scrolls type of mountains that we have in minecraft it’s not a mod this is actually happening this is actually coming to vanilla minecraft which is still Mind boggling they did such an amazing job with the mountain generation let me know down below in the comment section your favorite one mountains or caves mountains and mountain ranges we worked a lot with the actual shape of the mountains we worked a lot with height dependent generation and another thing When the terrain is really steep we made sure to not generate any snow there and that i don’t know exactly why but it really made the mountains look so much better another thing we really wanted with mountains is that we wanted to add some gameplay to them And i think it’s made two things one of the things is the powder snow that creates natural traps on the mountain so when you’re out on the mountain adventure you need to be careful so next thing is that we wanted like the mountains themselves to be the main reward for the mountains so The dramatic wishes that’s the main reward and we really hope that that you all will get inspired from the mountains the main goal of the caves is that it should be fun to just travel around even without the biomes and mobs and all the other stuff just moving around inside the cave Should feel like some kind of grand adventure so we are inspired by the by the surface of the world because if you if you’re on the surface of the world and you and you you know you live in one spot and then you travel off somewhere it’s gonna look different but the Underground has kind of been like once you’ve seen it you’ve kind of seen it all so we want the underground to be as exciting so when you travel off you should be like wow look you know a a waterfall or an underground lake or some huge cliff for a really tiny Cramped cave and another thing is we want the caves to be realistic but not limited by realism so it shouldn’t feel like you’re on some other planet or like in some other dimensions should be overworld but we also want to kind of be able to put in some elements of fantasy or exaggeration And also the game itself is actually a source of inspiration just tinkering around with the code trying things and noticing like wow look what happens when we add water to the caves it just made a huge difference or when we add you know really huge caves to contrast with really I am having such a tough time i feel like i bounce between mountains and caves and maybe you guys are in the same boat like you don’t know which one’s your favorite one they’re both incredible and i think right now i’m still team mountains but seeing the caves And just comparing it to current caves like the caves that we currently have right now to this it’s night and day i think this is going to be the best update that we’ve ever received and we’ve had a ton of amazing updates the past few years so i know that’s a big statement But considering what we have right now in the betas and the snapshots and the fact that we still don’t have the warden or the deep dark cave and a bunch of other features that haven’t been announced yet it just goes to show you how much love and energy and creativity has gone Into 1.17 it’s just an amazing time to be a minecrafter you have to admit this game is not slowing down it’s only going up hey i’m jasper i’m the league artist on minecraft that means i oversee the art and officials of the game and i’m going to be talking about The art in the new caves the large caves is something you want to build in because it’s so green it’s so nice there’s water and there’s of course the axolotl flush caves don’t really exist in in real life because the sunlight doesn’t get into caves but In minecraft we like to bend the rules a bit so for this large caves we wanted to have a cave the lush caves has to be one of the most beautiful biomes in minecraft it’s absolutely gorgeous it feels like a fantasy and i’m all for it It was full of plants brimming with life we decided to have these massive lush finds everywhere hanging everywhere covering everything we have added glowberries into the vines so the lush cave is a very bright and nice looking environment we have the new addition of bushes this is an interesting model because It’s it’s a block that is also has a plant inside of it we’ve made these because we can’t we didn’t want to have trees in the last caves because that would be literally copying the overworld into the underground and we want them not to be as similar so we’ve Decided not to have any trees in the rough caves we wanted the lush caves to feel a bit humid like an actual cave with moss and stuff so you’ve decided to have like small layers of water everywhere so they decided not to add trees underground And i know that was a question for a lot of people um so they’re not gonna do that and i understand it i would still like to see large mushrooms like glowing mushrooms underground i know that’s getting a little bit too fantasy but minecraft is sort of A fantasy game so fingers crossed i would love to see large mushrooms underground we were trying to figure out how do we make drip stones in minecraft right because we don’t want like drip stones in real life they’re very circular very organic shapes we’re trying to figure out how do we make this In minecraft how do we make this work and the first thing you might might go to is just like oh we’ll just make let’s make blocks we just like stack blocks together and you know it’s gonna do great jasper gets a lot of credit for how this game looks right now Obviously minecraft is a huge game with a big team so it’s not all him but he’s done a lot of the art for a lot of the past few updates we’ve received and especially with all the new blocks in 1.17 which there’s a huge amount of new blocks and textures A lot of credit goes to this guy he’s killing it so a question that i get very often is what are uh spaghetti caves and cheese caves um and the best way to understand it is if you imagine a an old television set with static noise black and white dots right And if you take those dots and you smoothen it out using a technique called a purlin noise a mathematical technique and you decide that those white blobs are air and everything else is stone if you look at that that becomes almost like a map of a cave system and That’s kind of how we generate the caves and if you look at that picture those blobs look kind of like us the holes in swiss cheese at least we thought so that’s why we just call that cheese caves but we also want tunnels connecting them so In a similar way we can create another noise field write the black and white dots smudge it out using purlin noise and then we can decide that instead of white blobs being air and the rest being stone we decide that the border between white and black That thin ridge becomes air in the rest of stone what he just said is so important for mining and just the caves because i think this is one of the reasons why so many of us got tired and bored of mining and it became more of a chore like i Myself i hate strip mining now i just i’m tired of it i’m sick of it it’s not even that efficient depending on the siege you’re in most seats and this is great now because it means that discovery is encouraged it shouldn’t take you that long to find a cave system a tunnel that Leads to another cave system large caves small caves they’re everywhere and by doing this they’re really encouraging us to continue exploring underground instead of just strip mining in a straight line and just praying that you find a cave in the next hour this is great and i’m super excited for 1.17 And that gives us spaghetti-like caves so putting those together cheesecakes gives us these big kind of caverns spaghetti caves gives us these connecting tunnels between them and then we add the old cave generation on top of that we get a ton of variation i’m actually very excited about Is the new really big ore veins that we are going to add they’re gonna be really rare but when you find one that’s quite an exciting moment when i play minecraft i really like to tell stories and to me it’s something very inspiring with finding something that’s quite unique in The world and so for me like my imagination started screening i was like so the person that’s found this war vain maybe now wants to build a castle or maybe like a build a fully mining village around it and what are the stories about everyone that live in this mining village that Was built thanks to the urbane and i think that’s exciting oh it’s so contagious man their excitement and enthusiasm is so contagious like you can just see how passionate and how happy they are talking about this game that they love as a result like we love it even more It’s like it’s so cool that we’re actually getting this and it started such a long time ago and to see it actually just sort of mold and shape into this beautiful update is like an early christmas present so i hope you guys are equally excited and thankful to mojang and the devs For creating this masterpiece this update has been kind of tricky because we’re changing basically everything about how the world is generated in minecraft but two of the main challenges especially for caves has been world height first of all we’re making the world higher and lower so the y coordinate starts at negative 64 instead of at zero and then extends too much higher than before and that’s hard because there’s so much code that assumes a certain world height we have to change so much code and do so much testing and fix so many bugs plus performance a bigger world means More stuff going on more stuff to load and i can slow things down so that’s one challenge the other challenges is water levels we love local water levels they’re really cool you get lakes and waterfalls but it’s really tricky to deal with when these different water levels meet how do we avoid Walls of water for example and things like that it’s important to try to include as many voices and as many diverse voices as possible and also preferably as early as possible in the process of crafting an update so and here of course the community is super important because We are very thankful that we have such a huge community and it’s a diverse community and really getting input feedback suggestions for the community it means a lot it’s because for us it’s important we create something that truly is for for everyone i want the players to be like Wow this is amazing and i think with the undergrad update we really did that so upgrading the underground was such a nice experience such a cool experience it’s the cave update it’s the update that the community has been asking for for such a long time it’s become of course very important for Us to really meet what preferably exceed the player expectations and i i really feel proud how we all have got together and really tried to achieve that and i feel i feel proud i feel we have a very good update and a good set of features with a lot of variation And i know it’s something for everyone i really hope that you’re all really gonna enjoy the kids and cliffs update and that it will inspire you to play minecraft in your own way so well said man perfectly said by everybody like henrik jasper lady agnes incredible people Super talented and they just seem like the kindest people ever i wish i knew them in real life but i don’t know i could just keep talking about this update forever and i probably will quite frankly these next several months but you can just tell that this update it feels different just The energy feels different compared to 1.16 uh the nether update and even update aquatic and village and pillage i don’t know why i feel like maybe it’s because this is something we’ve needed for such a long time or maybe they’ve wanted to work on this for such a long time I don’t know but i sense this like energy about the development for this update and it’s different man the feel of it’s different i feel like people are a lot more intrigued in 1.17 than previous updates but let me know what you guys think about the
