Java Realms Finally Gets Invite Codes and Render Sliders

Java Realms Finally Gets Invite Codes and Render Sliders

The latest snapshot adds shareable invite codes plus direct control over render and simulation distance in Realm settings, fixing two of the biggest daily annoyances for anyone running a public or friends-only server.

If you run a Java Realm you know the drill. Adding friends one by one, hoping the invite link still works, then arguing with render distance because the default looks like potato mode or tanks your friends’ PCs. That friction is finally getting addressed.

What actually changed

In recent 26.3 snapshots Mojang added proper invite code support. Realm owners generate a code, set an expiration and player limit, then hand it out. Recipients use a new Join Realm screen to paste the code without needing to be on your friends list. The same snapshots also stuck render distance and simulation distance sliders straight into the Realm configuration menu.

This is the bare-minimum quality-of-life work players have asked for since Realms launched. It is wild it took this long but the change is genuinely useful.

The invite codes reduce the awkward social overhead of managing a Realm. No more “add me on Microsoft” dance for every new member. The distance sliders give owners immediate control over visual quality and tick range without needing operator commands or server restarts. Both features are being tested now in snapshots and should land in the final 26.3 drop.

  • Generate time-limited invite codes directly from Realm settings
  • New dedicated Join Realm screen for code entry
  • Render distance slider now available in config menu
  • Simulation distance slider added alongside it
  • Changes apply to both new and existing Realms after update

For server owners tired of third-party plugins or constant whitelist maintenance this is a straight upgrade. Casual players get easier access. Performance-conscious groups can now tune the experience without guessing at commands. It is not flashy but it removes real daily pain points.

Realms owners can now create invite codes to their Realm, players can now join Realms by entering an invite code in the new Join Realm screen.

The official announcement sits at the top of Minecraft.net news right now. If you run a Realm, spin up the latest snapshot and test the new menu. The features are live in testing and the feedback window is open.
