NARRATOR: Could you use the creative power of Minecraft to bring a legendary castle back to life? Ancient cities are a brand new addition to Minecraft’s ‘The Wild Update’. So, what better way to celebrate than by bringing people closer to the history of a real ancient ruin? Together with the National Trust, historian Alice And Minecraft creator Grian, have been helping us recreate Corfe Castle. Can you tell me a little bit about the Castle’s history? There was, first of all, a castle here during the reign of William the Conqueror. And then it’s had this amazing history of royal splendor, political betrayal and sieges left, right and centre. It’s a lot of history to get your teeth into. This is a base ruin we made in Minecraft exactly as it stands today, ready for Grian to reimagine just how epic this castle once was with some historical help from Alice. GRIAN: I don’t even know where to begin. ALICE: Okay, well, I would start, as they did in history, with the Keep. So it’s a really imposing building. 23 metres high and you’d be able to see it for miles around. So, the first point entry is this outer gatehouse and this was pretty formidable. It had a big oak door. It had these double portcullises and even had arrowslits. So no one’s getting in here anytime soon. GRIAN: Didn’t want guests. ALICE: No! Now, this was King John’s favourite castle. And he built this thing called a gloriette, which is this kind of mini palace in the castle grounds, which was – I’ve never heard of a gloriette before. ALICE: But it was also a different architectural style. So we’ll now be building in the early English Gothic. I didn’t consider that I’m going to have to build in different styles. This is the Butavant Tower and this is an octagonal tower that’s three storeys high. And they would literally just put prisoners in there – -And forget about them. -And forget about them. Oh! This is going to be exceptionally difficult to build in Minecraft. You know, Minecraft’s full of cubes. Four sides. Easy peasy. Eight sides is not easy. ALICE: Well, good luck my friend. GRIAN: Oh, Okay. No advice? ALICE: No! [LAUGHS] GRIAN: So this is definitely a first for me. So, I’ve left the hardest part till last. The Butavant. The octagonal tower. I think I’m just about finished, if you’d like to come and have a look. This is Corfe Castle, as it would have been. ALICE: This looks incredible. I’m really happy with how this has turned out. GRIAN: What do you think? ALICE: I think it’s super. The first Corfe Castle of Minecraft. I’ve got a Minecraft skin made for you so you can, virtually, walk around Corfe Castle. Oh, amazing. I love it! In my pink jumpsuit! NARRATOR: And now it’s your turn. Could you transform this ancient ruin into an epic castle? Visit Corfe Castle in Minecraft and try for yourself today.
