Unfair competition this is what the owner of the now shut down broken lens server cited when talking about minecraft bedrock edition featured servers he said that there isn’t really a way to become a featured server and that mojang essentially chooses which servers succeed and which servers fail on minecraft bedrock servers featured in The game client are by far the most popular destination for players to play on and with the exception of one or two most bedrock edition servers that aren’t featured almost never have over 1 000 players online at a time this then brings up the question are featured servers bad for minecraft bedrock Edition just because they have an easy way to get players that most other servers don’t or is there a good reason that some servers are featured over other ones in this video we’re going to be exploring this question so if you’re interested let’s get started Alright so a bit of a disclaimer i got this idea from a youtuber named the mr epic who did a video like this but for hypixel on java edition he discussed how hypixel out-competed every other server by far and if this was okay for the ecosystem of java servers as a whole in Principle our videos are going to be quite similar talking about why the more popular servers are as popular as they are exploring the world of less popular servers and discussing whether it’s even sustainable for smaller servers to start up in this day and age i highly recommend going and watching his video After mine and there will be a link in the description if you want to do so but either way let’s get back to talking about featured servers imagine you’re someone playing bedrock edition for the first time and you want to play games with other people online chances are You’ll hit the servers tab choose one of the servers already listed and play that for the most part you can find pretty much everything in the seven featured servers that already exist but if for some reason you get bored of all they have to offer there is a button where You can add external servers as well all the way at the bottom where you might not see it and only available if you aren’t playing on a console version of bedrock if both of those apply to you you can play on servers that aren’t officially supported by microsoft and Minecraft and the way that you’ll find servers like these is likely on the web remember that you’re playing bedrock edition for the first time here when you find a website displaying servers you can play on chances are you’ll find some servers near the top that are listed as Premium or something meaning that they paid to promote their server at the top typically these are your pay-to-win garbage type servers and on literally the first one that i clicked on here they are shoving that exact garbage in my face i mean 60 bucks for a rank on a Server that has a billion game modes with basically no players you see what i mean if you look at the game modes the server actually has it’s all pretty much just the same stuff that we’ve already seen anyways skyblock prisons hide and seek duels parkour all of this stuff you Can already get on the featured servers anyways and likely in better quality there as well the point of this is to look for new stuff but the problem is there really isn’t that much new you look at these servers and you see that they’re all just the same stuff skyblock Prisons pdp and all with vote rewards if you don’t know what vote reward means basically a player can vote for the server on websites like the one that i’m looking at and get items in-game that they can use the more votes it gets the higher up on the site it goes which in Theory should bring the server more players in reality though these voting rewards actually aren’t that good at all and it just gives the player a taste of what the actual paid perks are hopefully pushing them to spend real money so many of the servers on lists like these are All the same way they’re the games you need to pay for to have any chance at making progress like prisons and skyblock this is one of the major problems with non-featured servers and that they’re all just your generic pay-to-win garbage i did end up finding a few interesting ones though there was This gta themed server that at least looked cool on the outside but there were also a couple of problems with it one it had a singular player online which just turned out to actually be me two the areas inside it didn’t work and three some of the server was in german Which i do not speak this is another one of the problems that plagued non-featured servers a lot of them just straight up don’t work there are also some other non-featured servers that do get regular players though and i’ve talked about them in the past the hypixel rip-offs people have figured out That a lot of players on bedrock likely won’t ever play java for whatever reason and so they just make hypixel game modes but on bedrock edition seriously some of these servers are literally just world download hypixel maps recreate their ui and pull crazy amounts of players because people still want to play Hypixel or at least something like it i know people will try and clown me for calling these hypixel rip-offs because oh my god potato pie i can’t play actual hypixel so what else am i supposed to play but the fact that you can’t play java doesn’t mean that it’s not just an Exact rip of the server that’s precisely what it is and that’s the entire point of these servers existing this brings us back to our earlier point there’s next to nothing original on bedrock non-featured servers even if we go back to a server like broken ones that at least had semi-original stuff they shut Down due to not being able to bring players in part of which was probably a result of being too original now all of this isn’t to say that there aren’t good non-featured servers there most certainly are but they’re just very few and far between one example of an honestly pretty good non-featured server Is called zekka or zikwa i don’t know how to pronounce it and it seems like no one else does either but it’s mainly a pvp practice server with game modes like duels free-for-all and other stuff you can use to practice and while other featured servers mainly cubecraft have Game modes like this in the form of duels and free-for-all zekka is mainly aimed towards more of the sweaty pvp community for what it is a non-featured server that averages one to 200 players at a time it’s got some serious quality and good looks the pvp feels smooth the Ui looks really nice and overall i’ve had solid experiences playing on the server however zekka will almost certainly never become featured just because it doesn’t really appeal to the average player the server is aimed at a specific niche of really sweaty players which if we’re being real here isn’t Really a large part of the people who play on minecraft servers and this is yet another problem with non-featured servers you can do quality but not really on a large scale and you have to cater more to those niche audiences so what now if featured servers have Versions of pretty much every game mode that people want to play and pretty much everything on featured servers works due to having developers that actually make a living is there really even a point in playing on non-featured servers this kind of brings up the point that i made In my intro where i talked about competition for the most part featured servers out-compete non-featured servers by a huge margin with most of them never breaking the 1000 player barrier is this unfair competition not really most non-featured servers wouldn’t be able to become featured anyways for one reason Or another some have java crossplay which isn’t allowed for bedrock featured servers others straight up rip-off content which again is a big no-no and finally most are regrettably pay-to-win which according to minecraft’s eula isn’t allowed but at the same time pixel paradise exists so that’s somewhat of a Gray area for featured servers i guess but you can also kind of make the counter argument that it is next to impossible to compete with featured servers probably one quarter to one third of the player base can’t play non-featured servers anyways and if you Can you have to look for and do work to add them and even then they still show up beneath the featured servers so if we look at the bigger picture of all of this are minecraft bedrock featured servers actually bad for the game arguably i’d say not really at the end Of the day there’s still a way for people to play online with their friends and demonstrate this by being available for cross-play on all bedrock devices some are most definitely better or worse than others but they do fulfill the goal of bringing players together which is What online minecraft is meant to do as for non-featured servers though yeah featured servers are definitely bad for them there’s still definitely potential for new servers to pop up but you can’t guarantee that they’ll stick around because as i’ve mentioned time and time again you just can’t compete with them In the slightest because of the promotion they get and the money they make but i guess that’s the ultimate goal of featured servers anyways to make minecraft and microsoft money through their marketplace without actually having to commit upkeep to the game if you want to know an example of this That’s happened recently i recommend going and checking out the video on screen about the pink glitch that hasn’t been fixed in years either way that’s gonna be it for this video thank you all for watching and i’ll see you in the next one peace out you Video Information

Featured servers are the backbone of online play on Minecraft Bedrock Edition, and they’re promoted and supported by Microsoft and Mojang. However, there are also other servers on Bedrock as well, known as non featured servers, which can be played on Minecraft Windows 10 Edition, Minecraft Pocket Edition (known as MCPE), but not consoles, such as Xbox, PS4/PS5, and Nintendo Switch. Given that the majority of the playerbase CAN play on non-featured servers though, one begins to wonder if featured servers are anti-competitive, and if Minecraft featured servers are killing off other, less popular servers. I explore these questions in this video, talk about why it’s not exactly simple to start a server from scratch on MCBE, visit some non-featured servers from a range of categories like pay-to-win skyblock and prisons and some Minecraft Bedrock Hypixel ripoffs, and discuss whether Bedrock featured servers are hindering the development and progress of non-featured servers. All of this Minecraft commentary, over some RTX shader cinematics, Minecraft server gameplay, and some Hive Skywars as well.
