What’s this new houses i wonder if anyone lives there let’s go check them out ah let’s have a look inside oh hello i didn’t expect to see anyone here who are you hi i’m er developer of minecraft oh cool did you build this house this is a raven generated town Which we’ll feature in 1.8 there will be like npcs walking around then i’ll finish that oh okay so uh you’re enjoying beta 1.8 so far yeah definitely i think it seems pretty cool so far is there anything else you think it needs we need to have exploding arrows right okay I think i’m gonna go now bye was that just did i just I know you’re up there one two three oh this thing is so good welcome back everybody to minecraft what are you doing over there ah just a second almost there ah hi welcome everybody to episode one two three of minecraft the journey with me bugmancx here we are in the ravine in Minecraft beta 1.8 pre-release to winky face but here we are in the ravine because in the last episode we built this amazing spider farm here where spiders fall down here and make their way through the system where i can just move over to this killing chamber here and Kill the little things and get all of the experience and string that i’ll ever need and this is right next to our skeleton farm as well so we’ve got a good supply of all things that mobs drop uh at least those things that mob drops the things that we need anyway oh hello Uh um you were not invited goodbye yes so today we’re on beta 1.8 pre-release to winkyface and i would like to get off of this version i’m sick of these pre-releases i want to get on to the proper version of beta 1.8 so why don’t we do that right now oh That feels good to be on the proper version of minecraft beta 1.8 just like everyone else remember these pre-releases that we’ve been running for so long were only available for about less than a week in reality but it feels like we’ve been on them for so long and you know what we have Why is there a creeper up there anyway beta 1.8 also known as the adventure update is an extremely large update for minecraft and we’re getting pretty close to the end of our minecraft beta phase ah sad i know but the adventure update is going to be the last major update to Minecraft before we get into the release era wow the adventure update is released in two parts this is part one beta 1.8 and later on there’ll be some additional features added which will be beta 1.9 or technically the pre-release versions but never mind about that now we’ve still Got lots to explore at beta 1.8 so i was thinking what’s a super duper beta 1.8 thing we could do villagers that’s right beta 1.8 introduces the villagers as we know because in the leaked pre-release we went off to find this one and this one is a completely broken village where None of the structures generate so i don’t want to find one of these i want to find a proper one with structures that actually works so i’m keen to go off exploring into new terrain and see if we can find one but before we do i Want to take a little bit of a look back at the introduction of the villages into minecraft beta because what we find today is going to be a little bit different to what notch originally teased when he first started promoting the new villages the idea of adding villages to minecraft Had been around for a while the first mention of it was back in november 2010 minecraft was still pretty undeveloped at this point and infinite terrain didn’t even exist yet in notch’s blog he wrote about the idea of creating worlds with infinite terrain and went on to Write up some of the advantages and disadvantages of this as one of the advantages he wrote there could be npc villages and monster towns a year later on july the 10th 2011 when the team were actively promoting the upcoming adventure update nott shared a concept picture of the first npc villages in minecraft Villages that generate as part of the terrain generation that’s pretty exciting there are a couple of other things to take note of in this picture first that there are giant red and brown mushrooms and the second is that there’s clearly a ravine cutting through the ground here these are all features that We’d see upcoming in beta 1.8 in the ign interview with notch in july of 2011 notch was asked about these new villages can you provide more detail on the npc villages how large will they be what will the npcs be doing there will they live in houses what sorts of services Will they provide if any can you kill them and break their stuff are there a limited number of villages in someone’s world clearly a lot of people had a lot of questions notch said i’d rather keep this secret for now but i will say that you can choose to either help the Villagers or destroy them if you wish so he wasn’t giving very much away at this point notch decided to focus his attention on other areas of development so ended up delegating the task of creating the villages to jeb jeb would also become responsible for designing the new Buildings and what we get in beta 1.8 will end up looking quite different from notch’s original concept so i thought it would be fun to recreate some of notch’s original village designs right here in the area above the ravine So so [Applause] So so So well we decided to have a little bit of fun with that one didn’t we we’ve even finished the little village here complete with the one brown and one red mushroom just like in notches screenshot and i replicated these buildings as best i could it was a little difficult to get The exact dimensions right every time but we have a finished product and well this is not something you’d ever expect to find in minecraft the game itself but here we have immortalized notches village forever in our ravine area so we better give it a name i think let’s name this the lost Village of notch oh can’t type beta 1.8 uh i don’t know yeah that’ll do well thank you creeper i think it’s time we now go and find ourselves a real minecraft beta 1.8 village and i’m going to head off in this direction now straight ahead of me Here across this swamp is where the broken village is that’s the one we saw before with no buildings generating it at all so i’m going to head up to at least that far and then i’m going to head off in that direction and see what we can find There’s our sort of ghost village off in the distance there with no buildings so i think it’s now time to head this way and i’m pretty sure if we do we should be generating some brand new chunks pretty soon which is always exciting and kinda terrifying in this series so off we go What is this this is really weird terrain generation right this can be this is not enderman this is something else just bizarre minecraft beta 1.8 terrain generation look how grassy the planes are in minecraft beta 1.8 you know this is actually the furthest out that i think i’ve been in this terrain Generation and so a lot of these biomes look very different to me now look at this cute little pond right next to a forest and over here i spy with my little eye a four tall sugar cane which is impossible to get by growing them you Can only get four tall sugar cane in some naturally spawning conditions four is the most i’ve ever seen i don’t know if they grow any taller and i think this also affects cactus as well but i can’t be sure but here we have it a four high sugar cane It’s getting to nighttime and that’s when it gets terrifying so i’m glad i came prepared this time i always forget to bring a bed not this time outsmarted your game didn’t i oh i didn’t expect you oh i hate that feature good night oh not another one what why not what is The point of this feature all right i’ve lit it up it should be okay now let’s try again okay let’s try that again i’m pretty sure i know where i was so we should be able to salvage my stuff ah i’ve got my eye on you creeper ah here we are My gravesite i will be so glad when that feature finally gets removed from the game oh my food this is pretty cool oh look look look off in the distance yes yes we found one and here we have a little desert village and in minecraft beta 1.8 villages will Currently only generate in plains biomes or desert biomes so obviously this is the desert village the basic contents of the village looks the same regardless of which biome you’re in but the game will procedurally generate each village based on the world seed the villages are all made up of paths And structures but there’s only one structure that’s always guaranteed with every village and that’s this one right here in the middle the well and that’s because the well is at the center point of the village and from this point the game will generate all of these paths up In different directions and all of the structures that need to be placed based on the world seed when the game needs to place down a structure it’ll find the front entrance of that structure which has a stair block right out here in the front and it’ll line that stair block up with the Road the stair block will be one block above whatever road height the gravel happens to be and it doesn’t always work perfectly this one looks really nice but just around here as you can see there’s a bit of terrain change and the game has decided to place the stair block Down here for some reason rather than up here at this level i suppose i’m not even sure why there’s no gravel generated in here but like i said it’s not always perfect in some cases where the building needs to be placed onto the side of a hill the Game will just auto fill with cobblestone all the way down until it finds another block that way it sort of gives the illusion that the building was actually built up from the ground rather than just hovering in mid-air the game will generate different types of buildings based on a weighted Probability that means that each type of building is assigned a different weight value and the higher that value is the less likely that building is to generate that lets the game generate more of the common building types and less of the more rare types within each village Let’s take a look at the different types of structures that you can find in these villages and i might need to hop between worlds a little bit here and there because this village doesn’t contain every type of structure let’s start here with the wood hut as you can see the Wood hut is a pretty common thing to generate and it has this little rounded log roof on the top if we go inside you can see that the floors made up of dirt doesn’t seem very hygienic to me and there’s no furniture inside either at least not in this one sometimes they Will generate with furniture and in this case it’s made up of a fence post and a pressure plate making up a little table here but that’s all you’ll find not very much else another fairly common building is this one the small house but this is a bit strange because they don’t generate with Any front doors who would build their house without a front door i don’t know fifty percent of the time though they will generate with a rooftop balcony so let’s go and check that out i mean if you want to put this baby up on the market for sale this is definitely a Feature you want to advertise right you couldn’t have small houses if you didn’t have large houses right and this one here is a large house and if we head round the back you’ll see that the shape of the house is an l-shape but let’s head inside and see if there’s anything Interesting to look at through the front door and oh it seems spacious enough right but there’s no furniture and there are no rooms i don’t know if this could fit a family of five comfortably there’s no privacy i’m not so sure here we have the butcher’s shop and you Know it’s a butcher’s shop because of the smell right once you head inside you can see a little bit of a table and chairs are set up here so that you can sit down and eat your pork chops or whatever it is that you’ve bought from the butcher who over here at the Butchering slab seems to have been busy carving up some animals and making some dinner but actually it looks pretty clean so i don’t think there’s been any butchery around here any time in the recent past through the back here is a little animal pen and this is Probably where the butcher keeps all the animals who don’t even realize what’s in store for them poor little things here’s the blacksmith building and the blacksmith building contains a couple of interesting features first it has two furnaces out the front here sadly nothing inside for me to steal but over Here there’s a bit of lava as well and you can see that it’s all surrounded by cobblestone and some iron bars here as well there’s a little slab out the front here i guess this is where an anvil would exist if they did exist in the Game and through this door here is a living area i think with another little table and chairs set up and not very much else but what is interesting about the blacksmith is that jeb ended up having a little bit of trouble when he was working on these and he said My smithy keeps setting the whole village on fire i need to contain that lava better some villages will also generate with a library and if we head inside we can see that the library is rather well lit it’s got some very large windows here and Here and some more in the back here as well it’s also got plenty of furniture with a crafting table and some places to sit down and read your books which i suppose you can select from this wide variety of books on the big bookshelf up here right above the windows There’d been a lot of talk about these new interiors containing furniture but as we’ve seen it’s only made up of existing blocks within the game the crafting table the bookcases the stair block the pressure plate and the fence post things like that what might have been interesting is if the developers Decided to revisit some old ideas do you remember back in classic when players discovered what resembled a table and chairs texture which was something that was never actually added to the game and i wonder why they didn’t implement any real furniture options here maybe they just ran out of time i mean This works it’s really quite amazing that these basic options are what we’re still doing today in the modern release when the game generates a village it’ll try and find locations to place these lamp posts here they’ll usually be alongside of a road like this and they’re made up of a black wool block With torches on them on top of these three fence posts they’ll usually be placed in a location that’s out of the way of where any of the structures might want to generate and through here i want to have a look at the last structure that makes up the village and that is This little crop bed here this is actually a little one this is the small variation and as you can see there’s a water channel in here to keep the crops soil wet and this happens to be growing wheat because that’s the only crop that you can grow in the game at the moment This one’s the small variety and over here is the large one as you can see it’s double the size and this village seems to have quite a lot of them well right now these villages are just ghost towns so i think i’ll wait a bit before we go off and find any more Villages in this world because i think you know it already but it won’t be long before they’re populated with npcs so stick around because we’ll definitely want to be exploring all of that in the future for now that’s the end of
