And welcome back to another sub human retro vr review is it too early to be doing retro vr hell no it’s not this we’re having a look at minecraft on the gear vr now bagel vr was a system that you plugged your phone into and stuck it in front of your eyes Via some goggles it made you look like a bit of a fool and looks a tad like um the oculus quest if you kind of squint a bit but yeah nowhere near as good ran for your mobile phone but it let you play minecraft and vr which is a totally new Experience of the time so let’s have a look and see what i felt back in the day what i say five years ago when this was released after what seems like an eternity minecraft after being released for every other format you can possibly imagine including mobiles vita playstation 3 playstation 4 xbox Minecraft finally comes to vr and this is minecraft gear vr edition it’s very very similar to um minecraft uh on the pc and minecraft on the larger systems like playstation 4 and uh ps3 it’s not the cut down edition thank god it’s not the version you play On your mobile phone or the version that you play on your playstation vita this is a much larger version with all the extras on it such as the fallen trees and bigger biomes and just a larger world and this is absolutely amazing i’m walking around here and bashing in trees all intents and Purposes exactly the same game but actually having it full vr [Applause] right in my face here it’s trippy as hell i mean it’s actually making me feel just a little bit spaced out i mean not nauseous so it’s not motion sickness it’s more just an hour familiarity but You’re actually in the world now so when you’re actually looking at these tree stumps they’re huge and um when you sort of look over the edge of cliffs and you look down to the ravines below they are much much um deeper and they just feel much wider And when you actually jump off things with all of things you get this giddy feeling in your stomach like yeah you have actually just fallen down a cliff or into a um into a ravine it’s an old sensation [Applause] Crafting a building as you can imagine is a huge part of minecraft and in minecraft vr it’s got an interesting twist to it you still got the same menus and still got the same commands like two sticks and three pieces of rock will make you a stone pickaxe or if you Put a piece of coal and two pieces of uh wood piping or two pieces of stick together um you still get um torches and things like that but doing it in vr is very very odd to play this game you really have to have a bluetooth Um control pad in fact it won’t actually let you load it without it uh as you can see you can sort of wander around the commands around the woods around the world picking up your your raw materials and your bits and pieces but um as you uh Can see here you get a much much longer reach than you do on the uh normal versions of minecraft and this one you can get a good sort of three or four extra feet so you can build things much much easier and that’s a real godsend especially seeing that You have to move your head to target things in the world uh you’re moving your head a lot in this game i think you’re just gonna give a stiff neck up too well at the way sheep come here hang up also killing animals unless you get more materials meat and Anything else they’re carrying which is always useful but yeah back to the building anyone who’s played minecraft before uh will be used to um building structures but in vr you don’t target it with a mouse don’t talk at the gamepad you target it with your actual head so Anywhere i look um the reticule in front of me um points and um anything that i can build on lights up in this case you can see uh it highlights it when i can put a brick here or i can put down a wooden block [Applause] graphics wise minecraft vr is exactly the same as on the pc or any other version you’ve pretty much seen however actually having um the screen so close to your eyes and having the blocks so big is very very different i mean you can’t make it out here but um It feels like i’m carrying a very very large block of wood and when you’re mining the chunks of rock in front of you or chunks of earth in front of you are huge and it takes a while to get used to what you can jump on what you can’t jump as um You really really shouldn’t be able to jump as high as um steve can in this i think my favorite part of minecraft vr is actually exploring the underground sections and the actual caverns in this um being that um virtuality is so sort of up close and personal and in your face Um being able to dig dig down into the catacombs and see the horrors which are lurking down there um feels a lot more personal now and a lot less um friendly and it’s a lot less fun than it does when you’re playing it on a very small screen The sound of music in this is as magical as minecraft ever was uh you’ve got sort of the sound of running water and moaning zombies and all the sort of incidental um sort of tweeting of bats and the battle of skeletons bows now is in the dark creepy stuff the general tools remain The same you’ve got your crafting blocks here which you can use to build other things such in this case if you stick a load of rock around the edge of the crafting window you get yourself um a furnace and furnace can be used to melt uh Things like iron ore and turn it into iron bars and that of course in turn can be turned into um pickaxes armor and pretty much anything else that you could need in the world and it’s all done via the same interface but just with a little vr twist to it so Instead of having to use your use your mouse and your keyboard you just move your head and click with the bluetooth pad when you want to place items and here you see you can make a pickaxe pick it up and then just drop it straight into inventory and it’s there ready to use So that’s minecraft gear vr edition um the addition of vr into minecraft was kind of second nature um there’s plenty of uh apps and um mods that have let you do it in the past on uh the oculus rift but this is the first proper official mojang edition Uh and yeah i’m giving it uh definitely four out of five uh once they’ve got uh the proper full version released um i’ll give it another review but at the moment this alpha version is um really really quite amazing uh the creative mode i haven’t tried yet The online mode i haven’t tried yet i’m looking forward to stop giving some seeds a try as well to try some other environments but from what i’ve seen here yeah definitely worth four stars and i really recommend spending the 4.99 it is on the uh oculus store at the moment thanks for Watching sub human vr retro reviews if you want more vet reviews please leave me a note and a like and
