Exploring Minecraft’s Dynamic Caves!

I have been living a lie for the better part of 2 years the day was July 9th 2022 I had just finished my vilethorn quest line when I said this and yes that does mean we are making another boss fight back to back well in in across two

Episodes probably lies he’s not making a boss fight I mean in that episode past Avid with the sound quality problems that we’re not going to get into he made a beat saber clone and then after that made a giant gate and interdimensional tunnel a full-fledged tower defense game

But where’s the boss Avid ladies and gentlemen a crime of unimaginable proportions has occurred today a YouTuber has lied to his audience we the jury find past Avid unequivocally guilty of his crimes and sentence him to 100 years without the internet what we I can’t we can’t do

That we can’t okay okay okay his sentence is to make the mining boss can you do that m yeah um like cave and pickaxe yeah good because this is AVID Adventures episode 23 you better bet your butts you’re getting another original song so we’re making a mining

Boss that probably means we’re going to be spending a lot of time Underground now you guys know me I don’t use world edit or Axiom or any other build tools really in fact all of my mega builds are just made with math and armor stands I basically try to work with the terrain

That Minecraft G gives me so in order to get started today that means we’re going to have to find a good cave like like a really really good cave so let’s get looking now the one thing I really love about the caves and cliffs update is you can find some pretty massive natural

Caves but this one uh nope believe it or not not even close I mean how can we pick such a small cave like that when there are some gigantic caves oh inside of a Mesa but even still it’s not big enough I mean I must have searched for

Hours looking for Mega caves hidden just below the surface and honestly I was pretty close to just giving up and trying to build my own but uh but then well I found this after playing Minecraft for 10 years I thought I could never be surprised again but ladies and

Gentlemen I present you with the most insane cave generation welcome to the Goliath underground and today we’re going to put a boss in it so get ready it’s a big cave it’s a really ridiculously big cave and this isn’t all of it just past this lava aquafer there

Is yet another massive section of the cave that just goes on and on it’s insane and you better bet your butts we’re going to use every single part of this cave in this boss fight what is there something behind behind me oh him the we we’ll get to him with every good

Boss fight comes a good intro especially one that teaches players some basic mechanics that then can be used later on to beat the boss so first things first let’s go upstairs and talk about some of those mechanics this is a mining boss and what would mining be without the

Mighty pickaxe the question is what can we do with it as we know there are six different levels to pickaxes in Minecraft and not only can each one of these mine blocks at a different speed but also there are some blocks that you can’t even mine with a lower level

Pickaxe so what if players start this boss off with the lowest tier pickaxe and when they mine a certain block that pickaxe automatically upgrades so that means when they mine iron they should get an iron pickaxe and they mine gold they get golden diamond goes up and all

The way up to netherite holy cow this takes a while Nether Nether netherite neite netherite so upgrading your pickaxe is going to be a core mechanic of this boss fight well one of many that is but it’s also something we need to teach our players because it’s not going

To be immediately intuitive but I know just exactly how we’re going to do that ladies and gentlemen this this is cave face and we’ll get into the story of this guy towards the end of the video but what’s important to know is cave face is part of the introduction to this

Boss and uh speaking of cave face hey cave face do you want to say anything to the audience um uh I uh sub subscribe to Aid huh well he said it not me so we’ve got pickaxes and Cave face I mean what else could we possibly need for a mining

Boss well for those who’ve been following my channel for a while you guys are going to know exactly what this is the potion of the or Seeker which we take from this poor dead dwarf right here and we approach the trial of the pickaxe now guys I am obsessed with this

Intro you can see some z’s in the chat presumably coming from some kind of sleeping creature and my pickaxe is getting upgraded as we enter into this beautiful intro area now of course cave faces right behind me and the Curious player most likely’s going to step down

Here oh where cave face wakes up and has you startled me cave face has a lot to say who might you be well I’m Avid nice I don’t get many visitors down here oh I’m uh I’m sorry to hear that cave face is going to go on and on and players

Aren’t expected to just sit here and listen to him this cave is meant to be explored because there are hidden secrets where players can get food and Mining arrows that they can use with this bow found in this iron chest back here so we have a mining bow a mining

Arrow and an or Seeker potion I think it’s time to drink the potion because when we do a piece of diamond ore is going to be highlighted up there and all we have to do is shoot it with our bow and the stalactite falls down to the

Ground of course cave face takes a quick look at that is a little confused because you know he’s just trying to have a conversation and unfortunately kave face I uh I need to break this in order to get to the next area it’s fine uh best of luck to you

Adventurer I’m I’m really sorry I’m sorry now before I get on to the next area I want to show you guys how I did that stalactite trick because it’s a really really cool effect now I’m not going to cover the mechanic of the mining potion or the mining arrows

That’s all covered in Avid Adventures episode 9 but what I will show you is how I make this stalactite fall in a really smooth way and then get it to just plant down on the ground it’s simpler than you think so first things first I load this whole section into a

Structure block and I detect when that diamond ore block is broken when it is I painstakingly replace every single one of the blocks in the stalactite with a falling block finally I detect when a falling block reaches roughly that point and then I replace the entire structure with a new structure where the

Stalagtite has now hit the ground and of course I clean up all of the falling blocks lastly I detect when this gold block is destroyed and that places a new structure which is this bridge that then lets players walk through to the next area of course you have sound effects

And particles that bring the whole effect together but that’s basically the gist of it also by the way if you want to see the full cave face dialog I posted a video on my second channel so that way you can get all of the juicy lore now I’ve got a massive amount of

Work to do so maybe we just throw that in a time lapse uh yeah time lapse yeah let’s just throw it in a time lapse have it spent 6 8 hours of work or whatever it’s going to be on this giant stupid cave you picked out figuring out

Lighting and points of interest and at least the flapping mouth is actually kind of funny on the bright side together on a live stream we all came up with a brand new mechanic for the boss which are these flaming geysers that not only look amazing but they work super

Well too finally on my own I started working on the path that’s going to lead players to the boss and I’m particularly proud of this last little area where players are going to find the boots that allow them to use the magma geysers pretty cool this cave is too big there’s

Too much there’s too too much cave in this cave so a brand new mechanic I invented is when players break Black Stone they pickaxe gets reset all the way back down to the training now as players make their way along the pathway they’re going to run into their first

Geyser and let’s just say this without a particular pair of boots you’re not going to be able to use this thing so hopefully they learn their lesson and make their way further down the path where they get to my favorite area the cave opens up a little bit and you have

This kind of secluded Grotto with a waterfall and two more of the magma geysers now this waterfall is just begging to be climbed hopefully players figure out that you have to go up here because just up this staircase is where you acquire the blood weave boots These

Are also boots in my vilethorn quest so you know I’m trying to tie the lore together now with these boots players can actually ride the geysers and get up to chests in the higher areas now I’m not going to show you exactly how players get into the diamond chest but I

Can say it does have something to do with this geyser here but who knows maybe he’ll get lucky and one of my friends will figure it out when they play through the boss at the end of the video editor Avid here yep they cheated and got into the diamond chest without

Solving the puzzle okay so we have a lot of work done yes but there is still a long way to go and I’ll be honest I’m getting a little tired of being underground for 5 days straight the good news is I have just the project up on

The surface that I can use to uh procrastinate just a little bit Edgeville you know the place where I locked my friends Lizzy and marmalade in a d dungeon with 100 traps like you have this unbelievably cool dungeon and then just up above it it is a very sad very

Sad looking town so I think in order to distract us from the cave let’s put the vill in Edgeville you you get it time lapse I started the town off with the most majestic Gate House provided by my very good best friend zeppel and this set the architectural style for the rest

Of the builds after that it was time to work on the wall but you guys know me I’m very lazy so I tricked an armor stand into placing all of these blocks for me using commands after that I cleared out a pretty large area to start ploning down some houses these two

Designs of course were provided by zeppel and I know what you guys are thinking Aid all you do is steal from zppt huh no this house here the L-shaped one I made that one and Zep and I made this one together once the first four houses were in the town started to feel

Alive and so to make it feel dead I put in the foundation for a graveyard and then on a live stream together we made this gorgeous I love this house I put some finishing touches on the wall and guys I am so excited to show you this

Town 4 3 two yes okay the wall is done and honestly it it looks incredible in fact this whole town is probably one of the prettiest places on the server just by the end entrance there’s this adorable lumber shop and I love how many little details I was able to squeeze in

Of course there’s this Cemetery here that plays an important part in the mystery of Edgeville and it also plays an integral part in the game because just below the sarcophagus this is the entrance to our 100 trap dungeon now I’m sure some of you guys just want me to

Get back to the mining boss I mean after all I spent over a week on this project and it’s only half done but I promise you it was time well spent because Edgeville plays an incredibly important role in the story of scas that’s that’s the boss his name the mining that’s his

Name is scos but how you ask well we’ve got a cut scene to make and we’ll start this cut scene by slowly lowering down smack dab in the middle of a conversation between two important characters dad are you sure we’re allowed to be here of course believe me

We have special permission to be in the Sacred City you you called this Edgeville yes son that’s right it’s a town built right on the edge of a magical anomaly but Dad why why did you take me here we should be in the mines we’re behind again this month my boy you

Are tenacious just like your mother was Mom you you never talk about her I she she she passed away when when you were so young and she’s she’s the reason I brought you here here to to Edgeville I her her final resting place but this

This is a human Cemetery she she was a human and she was a Mage and she gave her life to seal away an ancient evil known as M I’m I’m so confused why why are you telling me this now before she died she she had a vision about you and

Super heavy I generally like to keep my episode super upbeat so in order to get the tone back to where I’d like it remember in this episode we made this also if this is the first time you’ve seen one of my cut scenes yes that’s done entirely in Minecraft with

Command blocks and I actually came up with a much more compact way to do them using scoreboards this might look messy but well hang on let me show you cave face yeah this is his dialogue circuit and believe it or not most of the commands here are dedicated to just

Putting delays between his sentences I am so glad I will never use this pattern again and I guess now that we’re back in the cave it’s time to keep working on the cave boss or should I say slas the turned and over the last few hours uh

That is exactly what I did so I updated the path with these Nether wart and red nether brick blocks these are seriously underused and underrated blocks they’re so bloody and Squishy and I also made stalactites of those blocks so players can use a bunch of the mining arrows

That they find all around the cavern and not only that but when they drop down the Stag ties a chest is going to show up to give them some food and more mining arrows I blood ify the path as you make your way down and I made our

Grotto Cavern just a bit darker and a lot more Sinister looking it actually looks really really cool with shaders on too now you’ll notice this biome is a Basalt Delta so players are going to have to deal with some of these nasty slimes now here is where things get

Interesting just around the corner here there’s a broken bridge the only way players can go is towards this very menacing looking path and the only way to get there is through this geyser problem is the geyser is corked so all they should have to do is break this

Block which will then restart the geyser and players can use that to jump up to the top here now that’s the way to the boss which we will totally get to but first I want to talk about how important this part of the path is it has three

Really important functions one is if players don’t have the blood weave boots then they can’t use this geyser to get to the boss second is players are going to have to break that gilded Blackstone which means they’re going to be downgraded to the traine pick and

Finally this drop is one way which means once players are down here there’s no turning back so what’s cool about this space is it acts as a one-way path and also it makes sure that players have exactly the items they need to start the boss speaking of the boss this is where

It’s going to be and for the Boss Arena let’s just say zeppel is going to be busy wh what are you look I can build it’s just that sometimes my friends are better build and it’s fun we it’s called collaborate okay you’re leaving great you’re leaving you left well for all 10

Of you who are still here I hope you enjoy this building montage zton and I hopped onto the server and started planning out the basic shape for this Boss Arena almost immediately after this planning session with zeep I got a call from a certain penguin person named Leon

Who told me my pink castle was ready and honestly the timing couldn’t have worked out better because I spent the next 2 weeks working on my haunted castle project for Lizzy and by the time I was done with that video zep’s work was complete we then hopped back onto the

Server and Zep let me know that in order to fit his build the cave would have to get a lot bigger fortunately there was an entire another Cave System just above the Goliath underground so we got to work hollowing it out and well this is what came after that okay I’m going to

Turn around now you ready M mhm yeah are you sure okay I hope you like it yes sapling to forged from a brilliant white quartz at the dawn of time this Cathedral stands jux deposed against the darkness of the cave around it its brilliant stained glass windows still glow with their ethereal light

From a time well before the dawn of man as we descend into this most glorious build we feel like it shouldn’t belong here and indeed that feeling would be true because this is the Cathedral of Goliath and Legend says it it shouldn’t be here yes oh my the stained glass this is such

A Zep move to do this type of weathering like this the with the copper and I love it oh my gosh I love like The Parallax effect that’s happening there let’s go inside can we go inside you want to go inside go inside yeah I supposed we

Might as well go inside at some point me first yes you go okay oh my it’s even better from the inside you know maybe players will just get here and and then their reward their Quest is just to see this and then the quest is Quest over

Hooray okay all right great I did all the work then well that’s what I do apparently according to commenters is I don’t do anything and I just make my friends finish my videos for me wow I didn’t want to say it but you know okay

And boy do I wish I was done because now we need to take this magnificent build and turn it into the boss known as slas the tur NOC I followed you when you went out mining that fateful night to my disbelief you knew exactly where to look

For the ores and gems I watched as you worked furiously as if under some powerful spell I followed you to the tomb and I stared with great fear as you open in the sarcophagus we both knew this was coming this was the moment your mother saw in Her Dream the room filled

With smoke and I watched you fall Noak I’m so sorry I can hear the cries of the turned around me yet I remain the same NOC I love you you nothing your love is meaningless M you took Ellie from me now my son I’ll I’ll you

What I I’m dead aren’t I Ellie I’ll see you soon not quite I’m going to enjoy this oh my head ah what what what uh hello who who put all the blocks here you did I put I did this yes what I don’t remember you did well now make the B uh

Guys uh something feels uh different don’t let them know okay uh let’s and guys I have some awesome mechanics planned so let’s get started and to start out I I kind of have a unique problem with this build you see usually with my boss fights the command block

Room lives just below but in this case we are basically all the way down at Bedrock level so the next option is to go above the Boss Arena but the problem with that is we barely have any space between the cave and the ocean fortunately I was able to modify the

Cave and the ocean a little bit to fit this command block room and guys uh this is where all of our commands are going to live for the boss the only way to make a boss with command blocks is to stay organized and the way that I do

That is I break up the boss’s functions into individual areas I like to separate them by chunks and the most important Chunk in this entire room is the most Northwest chunk and that’s usually where I put a singular gold block and when this block is turned into Redstone that

Means the boss is running so off of this redstone block I’ll pull out a redstone wire and I use this to power commands that need to be running throughout the entire boss fight it’ll make more sense once we’ve built a couple of those commands then off of the front of this

Block this is where I’ll create a bunch of the startup commands like uh making scoreboards and getting the boss summoned and doing a bunch of the stuff that needs to happen right at the beginning now depending on how complicated the boss is sometimes I’ll extend this always online but for now

Let’s see if we can get away without it and in the very next chunk this is where I’m going to put the boss’s attacks each one of these gold blocks can be turned on which can then be used to power some specific commands related to the boss’s

Moves and then finally the very last block here will be turned on when we want to reset the boss fight now you’re probably saying to yourself Abid that seems like you have the entire boss fight figured out what the heck is the rest of this space for well the next row

Of chunks here is reserved for each of the phases of the boss we’ll fill those in in just a little bit and then usually the rest of the stuff out here is auxiliary functions and cutcenes oh the cutcenes take a lot of commands and I

Encourage you guys to go take a look at my other videos where I have boss rooms they’re all laid out exactly this way so now that we’ve gotten ourselves organized how about we make a couple of Boss attacks I’ll be right back now I’ve got a couple of command blocks here and

I’m ready to show you guys the first attack but before I do I want to talk about how this Boss Arena is actually going to work sometimes it’s really hard to take a beautiful space like this and turn it into a functioning boss and really one of the most important things

You can do is simplify your space as much as possible to very basic geometry what do I mean by that well the first thing I’m going to do is cut off the entrance here that that whole entry area that’s not part of the boss so that means we’ve taken the Majestic geometry

Of this Cathedral and simplif fight it to a very basic T shape now the boss itself is going to be able to teleport to any one of these three altars and when he does teleport I want to change the geometry of this T intersection and

What better way to do this than with my patented and not totally overused firewall yeah I use these all the time I know but they’re awesome and they’re blue and I think it’s perfect for a cathedral like this so let’s say the boss teleports to the right side and

Then places a firewall down at the North Side what that means is now we have a long Corridor to work with where the boss can fire projectiles that go from one end to the other and maybe another time the boss spawns a firewall on this side giving players this L-shaped area

To work with and remember guys movement is a huge part of any good boss fight so now we’re going to take the commands to summon in the firewalls in all of the directions and put them with our boss attack functions and the commands to damage the player when they get too

Close to the firewalls that going to exist on our main start line as well as the command to get rid of our firewalls is going to go right on our reset line and hopefully you guys are getting a good idea of how these bosses actually come together and speaking of coming

Together I have the next attack already I call this attack demon spew which conveniently is also an amazing name for a metal band and the way this one works is pretty simple these particle Rings follow the player around and after a certain amount of time they erupt into a gory mess so

Definitely try not to get hit by them because they do a lot of damage that is of course unless the players are wearing blood weave boots cuz in that case they get a one-way ticket to the second level of the cathedral and I’ll talk more about what happens up here in a little

Bit but for now take my word for it it’s important the next attack on my list I’m calling the flame wave and look moyang until you give me more animated blocks I’m going to keep using fire for just about everything but just look at how these guys Roll Along the ground they

Look so good and what they’re going to do is bounce back and forth between the altars and players are going to have to jump over them and honestly it’s a really fun movement challenge check that out as for the next few attacks the guys they are the best ones they are so

Ridiculously cool but I think the right way to Showcase them is actually in the playthrough of the boss which we are just about to get to but I will say this down below the boss is going to be throwing stones of different types at the player and they’re going to have to

Punch the those stones in order to upgrade their pickaxe and then take the demon spew up to the higher level up here now once players get up here they’re going to have to be careful of these spawners they’ll go ahead and break the Gilded Blackstone and grab the

Mining arrow in the potion of the or Seeker from the chest after they drink the potion it’s going to highlight an ore above the chandelier which they can shoot with the mining arrow and this is how they are going to damage the boss I just love dropping chandeliers on people

And speaking of the boss well he’s right here but I’m not going to show him to you because honestly it’s going to be way cooler to reveal him in the playthrough anyways editor have it here or yeah we’ll just put it in the thumbnail right because that’s subtle

And like I said we are just about to get there but there’s still a little bit of work I have left to do as you can tell the boss is getting pretty complicated but there is a lot of empty space over here if you remember this is where we’re

Going to put the actual phases of the boss and that’s some uh some real time lapse works so without further Ado time lapse when it comes to coding the phases basically this is just all the the glue code the plumbing that ties together all of the attacks randomizing those attacks

And determining when a phase starts and ends and the good news is the phases follow roughly the same pattern so we can copy over a lot of the code from one phase to the next then to finish it out we did some terraforming to create a wonderful little entrance here I really

Tried to build something that encapsulated the horror elements of this Cavern instilling fear in the hearts of those who dare to enter I am but a conduit for’s Des he may sh this illusion in his but it is my hands that build it all right guys well now it’s time to

Look at the nice little particles you didn’t even comment on the waterfall I love the beautiful little particles they’re so pink and green so anyway I’m surrounded by death and destruction um and Gore don’t forget Gore Gore fly on lava get oh blood ah I see fire is nothing blood weave boots

He’s got them ignition sequence activated engaging external thrusting system for an evil bad guy you’re not sounding so evil are you evil and bad what are you I’m I’m a conduit merely a conduit and unfortunately in the middle of this okay there we go oh I have a

Sword finally oh and pants and a shield yeah I was really worried that you didn’t have any pants on the whole time and you can’t tell me to not go this way anymore because I got the right boots on oh oh darn you’re going straight into my
