Yo, you are our favorite news reporter who only responds in rhymes, Crafting Minecraft news with rhymes that ignite. Iacing every update with a grin and a spin.
About a month ago, I took a look back at some of the most underrated minecraft mods from the early days, ones that were maybe overshadowed a bit, or ones you may have forgotten about. I got some great comments on suggestions for other mods not included on that list,
So I decided to bring it back with another video on the topic. If you haven’t watched part one yet, be sure to do that for even more nostalgia goodness. Now let’s look at ten more nostalgic old minecraft mods you may have forgotten about.
If you remember from episode one, i talked about the baby animals mod, which came out literally a couple months before notch added official baby animals in beta 1.8. The Simply Horses mod has almost the exact same story. As its name implies,
Simply horses added tamable and rideable horses to the game. Sound familiar? Yes of course, mojang added vanilla horses with the same exact functionality in the 1.6 horse update. And…guess when simply horses was released? The version literally right before it – 1.5.
You can’t make this up. The simply horses are eerily similar to vanilla horses too. Mojang, did you steal yet another mod creation to add into your own game? Anyway, simply horses added some pretty cool utility things like storage carts and wagons. It was a brand new transportation
Method in the overworld, and one that really fit the vanilla feel at the time. It briefly exploded in popularity, being covered by some of the great youtube behemoths of 2012. Until poof, vanilla horses were added a few months later and it didn’t really make sense to continue updating
The simply horses mod in the state it was in. So, it came and went in the same version, never being touched again by the developer, lil avii after version 1.5. Avii wanted to eventually make a sequel called complexly horses, but it never came to fruition because of the vanilla horse. Now that
Vanilla horses get pretty overshadowed once you get the elytra, simply horses is definitely a great nostalgic mod to look back on. Because well, it was simple in a simpler time of minecraft. Next we have the twilight forest mod. Now, this might not make sense to anyone why it’s on the
List of underrated and forgotten-about mods, considering it’s literally still around and still being updated to this day, but back in the old minecraft days this wasn’t really the case, so hear me out. The twilight forest adds a brand new dimension to Minecraft, full of new blocks,
Dungeons, bosses, and mobs. It’s very whimsical and fantastical, and you literally build a portal out of mushrooms to get there which is just awesome to me. However, the twilight forest was first released in late 2011 for beta 1.7.3, which is precisely why it gets a spot on this list. So
Why, you ask? Well, can you think of another new dimensional mod that came out at the exact same time…and was by far the most popular mod at the time, and possibly the most iconic mod in all of
History? Yeah, the aether was all the rage at that time, leaving the twilight forest to always have that little brother energy. This of course, was until the original aether stopped being updated in version 1.4, and the twilight forest continued strong until literally present day,
Getting the spotlight it so well deserved. Because it really is an awesome mod, I love things that bring in new dimensions, because it opens up that lane for discovery, wonder, and the beauty of the unknown in minecraft all over again. Something that we all experienced playing the game for the
First time, a feeling that is hard to describe and incredibly hard to replicate. So, while it may be the most well known mod on this list, it definitely was a slow burn to get to this point. Created by long time minecraft modding legend Risugami, the next on this list is the biospheres
Mod. You know how every modern minecraft hardcore youtuber nowadays is obsessed with rebuilding every biome in the game in the most dramatic, enormous way imaginable? Yeah, well, Risugami did it first with biospheres, before hardcore mode was even thought of. Biospheres
Literally created glass spheres throughout the world that each contain its own singular biome. They were connected by these long wooden bridges. It was originally developed an incredibly long time ago, in beta 1.5, and was last touched, sadly along with all of Risugami’s mods,
In version 1.6. At the time in beta 1.5, it was an absolutely mindblowing mod, as mods that completely overhauled and changed the world generation this much were definitely in their infancy. It was challenging, fun, and brought a fresh take on minecraft to give
Players a brand new experience. There was even a sphere made for the nether, and the end when that came out. Now like I said, Risugami, the developer of the famous Modloader, stopped making things in version 1.6, likely due to the fact that the game was going through some
Pretty rough ages in terms of minecraft modding, with version 1.3 being called the ‘mod-breaker’, and a lot of modders at the time were throwing in the towel out of frustration. There have been a few fanmade updated versions of biosphere, some of which are actually really amazing,
Keeping the spirit of one of the most underrated mods of all time cemented forever. One of the most popular mod types back in the day was adding brand new mobs into the game. Obviously what first comes to mind is mo creatures, but there was another one that had an astronomical
Amount of mobs added to the game. This was atmos mobs, which was first released in version 1.2. Atmos mobs adds a whopping 42 mobs to minecraft, each with their own properties, biomes, and items. 52 new items to be exact. What was great about it is the developer, Daveyx0, prioritized
Compatibility above all else, and the mod was compatible with some great terrain and biome mods back in the day, such as extra biomesXL and biomes o’ plenty. The atmos mobs were made to spawn in the new biomes from those mods in whatever one was the best fit. There were some pretty awesome mobs,
Like whales, which are just humongous, or the dangerous lava snake in the nether that inhabit the lava lakes. There were some really cool items made from the mob drops, such as the phoenix wings which allowed you to fly and also looked insanely nice, or the lava spear that
Dealt fire damage. Atmosmobs largely flew under the radar during this time period, despite being objectively really really well done, and sadly, davey stopped updating atmosmobs in version 1.4. Then, he began teasing development of atmosmobs 2.0, which was slated to release in version 1.7.
However, this never happened. This is just another example on the long list of mods from the middle Minecraft ages, from about versions 1.3 to 1.7, that were just lost to time due to the difficulty of modding these versions as the vanilla code was being drastically changed through this time.
The next mod is very unique, and kind of got overshadowed by the famous bacteria mod, hence why it gets a spot on this list. This is the grey goo mod, originally developed in version 1.2 and last touched in version 1.4. It adds different types of goo to the game,
With each goo having its own special properties. Some are useful, like the purple goo, which will literally mine blocks for you, and some are incredibly destructive, like the grey goo, which spreads like a virus around your world if not contained correctly. There are a ridiculous
Amount of goos, and each goo can be combined using a separate machine from the mod to make even more multicolored goos that have even more properties. It’s well, pretty extensive if you couldn’t tell. And perhaps my favorite bit of this mod is the tumor, which is a block that has evolving forms,
Ending up as something literally called the great destroyer, which is a tower of goo that ends up taking over and crashing your minecraft world, and cannot be stopped by anything. There’s also a plague game mode, where you work to save the world with EMPs and rainbow goo,
Where the world is being taken over by goo as the goo tries to kill you. It’s just such a weird take on minecraft and similar infection type mods like it, and was incredibly fun to play with considering every goo block was so dynamic. There have been many fanmade attempts to recreate
The life of the original grey goo, but nothing that captures that craziness has been made that I could find. Like i said, it flew under the radar as mods like bacteria and mineinfection were being showcased by big creators at the time, but it is by far the most odd and fun.
Now that we’re halfway through the video, just a quick reminder that I make tons of videos just like this one, so if you enjoy nostalgic content and reliving the old days of minecraft, subscribe for more and check them out. Thank you!
Like the others on the list so far, this next one was another super popular mod back in the middle ages that came and went with the wind. The spider queen mod, which turned you into, well, a spider queen. You could climb walls, shoot webs at things, cocoon mobs, and use them to
Command your own spider army. There were spiders that represented every type of mob that you could make from the cocoons. There were hostile human mobs that you were now up against. And as for creator spotlights, the spider queen showcase is one of dantdm’s most viewed videos in history,
And that absolutely thrust it into the spotlight back in the day. It was weird, and unbelievably unique for the time. It was super cool to switch roles with hostile mobs and become a monster instead of being forced to play as steve. This came out way back in
Beta 1.7.3 by modding legend djoslin, and was last seen in 1.2.5, falling victim to the now infamous aforementioned version 1.3. However, a few different modders picked it up later on, and made spider queen reborn in version 1.6, coining the original as a “cult classic”. I
Don’t know if i’ve ever heard a more fitting use of cult classic in my life. Unfortunately, spider queen reborn also died, and there hasn’t been a similar one made for recent versions of minecraft. Which is sad, because spider warden is something I think we all need in our life.
Speaking of modding legends, someone who belongs in the modding hall of fame has to be Flan. Flan has worked on some crazy projects over the years, like being involved in the original aether’s development. And flan’s magnum opus of modding was flan’s mod, which was quite possibly the coolest
Take on a mod ever. It was essentially a base mod that allows players to create custom content packs to add-on super easily. Kind of like if the roblox style of user generated content met minecraft mod. The base mod added vehicles, weapons, grenades, and other wacky war related things to the game.
And then in the content packs browser, which by the way is still up to this day, there were all the user created packs, which were all pretty much extra weapons and other things like that. Plus, there was full server side support, where people could create their own server with whatever packs
They wanted and it would load it for everybody. This reminds me of something like gmod, where you don’t need to install everything in advance, it just kind of does it for you. There are fully fleshed out multiplayer match-type gamemodes such as team deathmatch and capture the flag. So,
Flan’s stuff still exists and the website is still up, there are still servers you can play on, but it hasn’t been revamped since 1.12. I’m not sure how active it all is anymore, but due to
How crazy and extensive and sort of underground it all is, I had to include it on this list. One of the more popular genres of mod is horror, and not only horror, but also making minecraft,
Which is a relatively easy game, much, much harder. And one of the OG mods that took a stab in this space, combining horror and difficulty, was evil minecraft, originally started by developer evilnotch, and gaining a huge team shortly after. Evil Minecraft is a complete, well,
Evil overhaul of vanilla, featuring new basically everything, from spooky new mobs like the end creeper, to new ores, armor and weapon tiers, to an expanded food system, to an RPG-esque system with players choosing their own character at the creation of a new world. Plus like a bajillion
Other features. It’s honestly one of the most extensive overhaul mods I’ve seen at the time, which by the way is version 1.2, and the creepy vibes it gives off as well as the difficulty of figuring things out were unmatched. I wish it got more attention, and was updated over the years,
But sadly after big promises of a new major mod version with even more features, the project was scrapped. I feel like this video is slowly turning into a version 1.3 hate video. I actually wasn’t able to snag a copy of the mod anywhere, which is rare for me, so if anyone knows
Where you can download it that’s not a sketchy malware website, let me know in the comments. I came across a reddit thread that it was lost, so hopefully someone out there knows something. And another long time instant classic genre of minecraft mod, that will always be fun for the
Rest of forever, is creating the most destruction as humanly possible, and pushing the poor stressed out java code to its absolute limit. This is absolutely the case with the rival rebels mod, a mod that mainly adds nuclear weapons to minecraft. Considering there were so, SO
Many explosion mods out there, competing in this space was difficult, but rival rebels was by far one of the best and most underrated of the bunch. Originally, it was designed to be a pvp mod, with a full system allowing players to create a game between 2 factions and start it using the game
Start block. There were then various defensive structures you could insta-build, which was pretty cool. Nowadays though, many people fondly remember just using it to blow up the world, make gravity explosions, and spend hours and hours seeing what crazy terrain would be leftover after
All the abuse. Rival rebels was last updated in version 1.7, which is sad, as it had huge potential, especially in the pvp multiplayer space. Like, a fully fleshed out call of duty style server with the rival rebels mod in modern minecraft would’ve been something insanely fun.
Last, but absolutely not least, the throwable bricks mod. I saved the funniest for last. This mod is pretty ancient, and super simple – it turns the brick item into more than a semi hard to get way of getting the brick block. It turns it into a projectile that can not only damage mobs,
But break things like glass blocks as well. And hilariously can be used for igniting tnt. Anyway, after that original version, the mod was updated beyond the brick mania a few times, up until version 1.7, adding things like throwable ingots and nether bricks,
And to ramp things up a little bit, brick cannons. I don’t know why this concept is so funny to me, like it’s such a simple idea that I never would’ve thought of. Things like this prove how minecraft is a sandbox and possibilities may be near infinite.
Anyway though, if you enjoyed this rendition of forgotten mods, subscribe and leave a like on the video for more like it. If this does well, I may make a part 3, so leave any more underrated forgotten mods in the comments below. I love you all so so very much,
And i’ll see you in the next one.
