Building a Mud Hut in Primitive Technology Minecraft
A brand new world to explore, with endless possibilities. Exploring for somewhere to settle down and begin building. The ideal location will be near water, an average temperature and close to trees for gathering wood. This small clearing next to the river will be perfect. Testing that the water is drinkable.

Basic Tools and Crafting
Picking up rocks and branches to make basic tools. Knapping stones into knife blades. Combining knife blades with sticks to make the first tools. These knives can be used to cut grass, which drops straw. Clearing an area around camp. Crafting a stone axe. Chopping down trees for firewood.
Survival and Resource Gathering
In addition to drinking water, the river is also a good source of food. Crafting a stone javelin for spear fishing. While collecting the fish, spotting Athyrium Fern, a plant which grows on top of clay. Crafting a shovel to collect clay. Forming clay into vessels. Nightfall. Starting a fire.
Clay and Brick Making
Logs and sticks will fuel the fire, while straw will act as kindling. Fire sticks are used to light the fire. Making torches. Forming a pit kiln to fire clay vessels. Making clay jugs to hold water. A second pit kiln. Collecting dirt to turn into bricks.
Construction and Completion
The next morning, the first pit kiln is complete. Once cooled, these vessels can store 4 stacks of items, clearing up inventory space. Collecting jugs from the second pit kiln. These jugs can store water for drinking or crafting. Combining dirt with water to make mud. This process is repeated many times until all the dirt collected is converted into mud. This mud is then combined with straw to make wet bricks. Bricks are laid out to dry under a tree, as the leaves will block rain. Straw is crafted into thatch, a useful building material.
Hut Construction and Final Touches
Collecting more clay while the mud bricks dry. The clay from this deposit should last a while. Crafting and firing two large ceramic vessels. By now the bricks have dried and can be collected. For some reason, these are still wet. Crafting mud bricks into blocks. Gathering more wood for building materials. Beginning hut construction. Logs are placed vertically on each corner to provide support. Mud bricks are placed between the logs, forming the walls of the hut. A roof is constructed from thatch to stop rainwater from entering the structure. An overhang will provide space outside the structure which is protected from rain. Collecting the fired large vessels.
Completing the Hut
When placed, these provide nine slots of storage. Food sealed in a large vessel will expire slower than other containers. They can also store small vessels, for a maximum of 36 slots of storage per large vessel. The hut has come together nicely, however, it cannot be called complete until it has a bed. To craft a basic bed, a large animal hide will need to be obtained. The Grizzly Bear is one of the few animals that drop this, and is also one of the most dangerous. Extreme caution is needed around these bears, as they can kill in seconds.

Pillaring above the bear is the safest way to take one on in the early game. Once the bear is low on health, he retreats. Due to the distance, the bear is harder to hit. Back at the hut, a bed is built using two thatch and the bear skin. This will allow the player to sleep the night, but will not set the spawn point. This is the opposite of the default behavior, and has been manually changed in the config file. The completed hut.
