Preventing bullying in schools can be a tough challenge building an inclusive empathic classroom culture can go a long way towards helping students feel safe and seen here at christchurch city libraries we’ve developed a short immersive experience in minecraft education edition which gives students an introduction to the idea of privilege And how we can all contribute to creating safer kinder spaces for everyone here’s how we do it when students arrive for our course they’re told that they will work in teams to design a village what they don’t realize is that each team has vastly different starting resources Students who spawn on the green side will cheerfully get on with their challenge often oblivious to their classmates struggles meanwhile students who spawn in the desert will quickly become frustrated with the lack of resources and tiny plots of land they have to build on at the end of this first part We collect students experiences and encourage them to talk about how they felt then they have a chance to experience the other side and again we collect feedback finally we gather and have a conversation about their experience we explore how privilege and empathy relate to bullying as well as other Local and global challenges we face students brainstorm specific actions that they can take back to school contact christchurch city libraries today if you would like our staff to facilitate a crafting empathy experience for your classroom or community group you can also visit our website to learn More or to access our free resources and lesson plan which will allow you to facilitate crafting empathy in your own classrooms and community spaces You Video Information
