Hello everyone my name is Pixar IFS and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide hope you guys are having a good day today I thought for a change of pace we would look at something a little bit different today we’re going to be looking at banners and how they can be Designed for maximum effects to add to your world and what they’re just generally useful for oh I’ve broken my floor brilliant great start to the video so today we’re gonna look at banners and the many things you can do with them and I’ve been gathering a few supplies specifically these wither skeleton Skulls so I can try and show you as much as possible about banners from within the game because there are some very useful external tools which we will get to in a short amount of time that we can use to test out banner designs before you create them in Minecraft but in that Case we are getting a little bit of ahead of ourselves so to start off with to do anything much with a banner you will need to know for a start how to create one and I have six white wool in here so may as well use up the rest of That I can always share some more sheep if I want to to make a banner you put six wool of the same color into a crafting table with a stick below it and who get to yourself one white banner so these things are pretty resource intensive you’ll need a decent sheep Farm or at least access to a lot of string and some die if you want to make the banner a specific color because once you have made a banner of a color it cannot really be changed wholesale you cannot just put a white banner in here With some dye or a red banner in here with some dye and dye it white because what dyes do when placed in a crafting table with a banner is dye sections of that banner different colors depending on the position of the dye in the crafting table you can see right now That I’ve got a red banner in here I’ll just use the one red banner and it adds a sinister kanten which is the proper like heraldic term I guess for part of the banner being dyed in a corner like that so for example here there you go I’ve dyed it I’ve taken out of the crafting interface and it’s now got a white square in that bottom right hand corner now there are a whole bunch of patterns that can be achieved just by adding dye into a crafting table with a banner already present for example you Can have a stripe down one side a stripe down the other side you can have a can pleat border like so you can have a corner stripe like that so it just stripes straight across the middle you can set the banner to one side and have It go up the middle like that so you have a central stripe or a horizontal stripe there are a whole bunch of different things you can do with this in fact I think two stripes down the side like that gets you a complete striped pattern like that and so if you wanted To make an American flag now all you need to do is get some lapis wherever that is like so and I think we probably just need one of those in one of the corners I forget which corner it has to be if you’re draping a flag like this I Think it’s that way around having spoken to some American folks about this I’m pretty sure they’ve told me that when you put the flag vertically on a wall like this when it’s kind of long ways like that in portrait I guess the Blue Square still has to be on the top left That’s just a thing I don’t know anyway I’m British I don’t understand most of this stuff to begin with but if you want to then remove patterns from a banner then it can be done using a cauldron and that’s actually one of the main uses of a cauldron considering that the potion Brewing cauldrons aren’t all that useful in Java addition a water source block will refill water bottles infinitely as opposed to a cauldron taking like three water bottles at most now the same is true of washing patterns off of banners if you right-click on a cauldron with a Banner that has recently been added to it takes off the most recent pattern starting with that Blue Square and then we can wash off the stripes as well and that goes back to being a red banner that we can stack up with the other red banners in our inventory I can just Clean off that white square from that one as well and it goes back to normal and that has used up all the water in the cauldron so I’ll need to go and get another water source if I want to do that again now there are a few items Aside from dyes which can add patterns to banners there are a few that I’ve got with me here and a few that I will be able to run around my world and collect there is only one that I’m unable to demonstrate to you in game right now and That is an enchanted Golden Apple not just a regular Golden Apple like the ones you can craft with with eight gold ingots around an apple an enchanted golden apple now these used to be craftable up until I think minecraft version 1.9 in Java when it used to be Possible to craft them with eight gold blocks around an apple instead of just eight gold ingots now unfortunately that is no a recipe that’s in the game enchanted golden apples can only be found in dungeon loot chests and they are relatively rare I have never yet encountered one in all my time raiding Dungeons in this game so chances are you might not be able to find one but that one probably produces one of the cooler but less useful patterns in the grand scheme of things it’s the mo yang logo the kind of Apple logo that you see when The mo yang kind of screen loads up when you load up minecraft for the first time so you need an enchanted golden apple for that one I don’t have one of those don’t worry we’re not going to demonstrate it I can show you it a Little bit later on if you want to know what it looks like but the other things you can’t do stuff with are for example vines if we put a white banner in here and put some vines in here with some sorts of dice a the blue for example it Will create this blue indented border like so the border indented it can create this kind of elegant curved border instead of a straight border so that can be useful in some patterns another one that’s actually kind of cool is having a wither skeleton skull on the Banner and in this case if I for example put a white die in there with the wither skeleton skull it creates a skull charge which is effectively what you might be familiar with if you’re into your pirate stuff the pirate skull and crossbones I’m actually going to keep this so that I can use it for other things and I intend to use the wither skull in a different pattern that we’re going to discuss a little bit later on basically my goal for today is to create a pattern for a banner that’s going to be the official banner of my town founders Forge over there in the distance and you can create banners in your own worlds to do a variety of things but also to kind of represent you if you like so we’ve covered the skull and crossbones pattern we’ve covered the vine pattern there are a couple of other ones that require Specific items other than the enchanted golden apple and one of them is very tricky to get and the other one is relatively easy to get so if I hop over to my storage system here we should hopefully be able to track down a brick block if I haven’t left all of those Over at founders Forge when I was building the shops before maybe in the Terra Cotta chest I have flowerpots in there I do not appear to have bricks that bricks upstairs I have bricks upstairs okay good and if it doesn’t require you to make a pattern in a 3×3 crafting grid it Is possible for you to add a pattern to a banner in your 2×2 crafting here we can just add the brick add some white dye and as you can see that comes out with a masoned field a field Mason it’s basically a brick pan applied to the banner in whatever color Of dye you choose to add and if I’m remembering correctly the last of our special banner items I actually have over here in the blacksmith’s guild app founders Forge because we acquired one of these in the episode about channelling with lightning this creeper head will actually work as a pattern on A banner and this used to be a lot more difficult to get before the advent of channeling but of course you still need to have a trident with channeling in order to add this pattern to your banner a creeper head actually creates a creeper face on the banner in whatever Color of die once again that you choose to apply to the banner so if we wanted to have a black banner with a white creeper face on it it’ll probably look a little bit spooky we can do that with the red one there basically any color of Die you want to apply and the creeper head will get you that pattern so that’s pretty cool I’m not gonna use that fool right now though because I kind of want to get more creeper heads before I start using them for banner patterns by the Way I got a skeleton head a little while ago but that doesn’t have any kind of effect on the banner and there are a lot of items that you would expect maybe they would have an effect on a banner like you can imagine having the dragon head create a dragon pattern for banners Would be pretty cool unfortunately not the case dragon heads do not do anything there are a whole bunch of items that you would expect to produce banner pans that don’t really do much it’s basically just the ones I’ve covered today and the dyes are the only things that will Produce good patterns for the banners now in game up to six patterns can be added on banners in survival so if I wanted to do a white border around my skull and crossbones then I absolutely could if I wanted to do a stripe along the bottom of it so just the top two Bones are there then I could do that too there are a whole variety of things you can do with up to six layers and depending on which order you put the layers on you can actually create some really interesting patterns and this is especially true if you layer stuff up in A way that means it removes it from the design instead of adding it to the design it’s a little bit difficult to explain but it’s a concept called negative space which is something that we can go into a little bit more when I show you this next thing so you might Get a little bit overwhelmed crafting stuff in this crafting interface and there is a loom blog coming in the next update to minecraft at the time of this recording which will actually show you the patterns so that you can work with them instead of having to craft them in a crafting interface it Also allows you to create a creeper skull pattern so you only have to use one creeper head ever to apply a creeper head pattern to a banner but we’re getting ahead of ourselves a little bit there that’s not available in the game yet so I’m going to cover it in more Detail when the loom is actually available to me in survival in the meantime what I like to do is use a website called need cool shoes comm which is a Minecraft skin designer and also has a section for designing banners so we’re going to go out to that website Now and I’m going to show you a little bit more about how I like to layer up banners for the best effect so welcome to need cool shoes comm this is the part where the skin editor hangs out and that you can see me floating in this little Skin editor over here you can basically find anybody’s skin in Minecraft by their username so let’s say Mambo as an example and it’s added my skin over here’s we can remove that with the visibility there there’s Mambo look at Mambo in all his glory anyway we’re not Here for Mambo we’re here for banners and by clicking on banner over here or adding slash banner to the URL you can get yourself to a banner designing page and this is where the banner feature really will open up to you because by choosing a color and a design from the Patterns over here on the right hand side you can add layers to a banner and basically preview what it’s going to look like without ever having to trial and error this stuff in Minecraft and waste resources on designing your banner instead what we can do is say for Example if I hover over this I can set this to be a grave Anna for example a dark gray and then let’s add something like a red gradient over the top of it like so you see you can layer this stuff up as you go you can also add in a Couple of shapes let’s add say a let’s remove this layer let’s add a black oxide Daisy didn’t cover that one we’ll have to go back to the the Minecraft world and cover that one but the oxide Daisy flower is found pretty much everywhere it Plains biomes and stuff Like that and that creates this sort of Sun pattern that you have here I’m not sure if there is a specific word for it but that’s the the one that you you find and you can easily just change the color of that if you want to let’s change that To uh let’s go with yellow now here comes the fun part if I switch to gray and then add the skull and crossbones patent over the top of it what that does effectively because the background is dark gray and the pattern I’m adding is dark gray it sort of Extracts that pattern from the pattern that we’ve already laid over that so the oxide Daisy pass in there is kind of overlaid with the same color as the background and it doesn’t really look like a wither skeleton skull pattern anymore it doesn’t look like the skull and crossbones anymore it looks like a Section has been carved out of this pattern here making it look more like a kind of flower I guess and this is kind of the basis of the pattern I want to use to design a banner for founder’s Forge because it’s yellow it’s got this Kind of regal effect to it we could even simulate some stuff to do with the ravine by putting in like some gray layers over the top of it with a gradient like that if we wanted to make it look a little bit more foggy we could Do something like that or we can add in a few other layers here and there let’s put this in behind that and by using the up and down arrows attached to each of these layers you can kind of move them around to see where you would have to Add them in the banner crafting recipe in order to get the results you wanted for example here if I want to cut off that white stripe up there I can just change this to gray add one of these half layers one of these kind of half Stripes with six gray die in the top there and then move that layer up until it’s after this white stripe but before we added each of the other two layers and that way the white stripe there only reaches halfway up the design and that kind of blocks out the eyes of the Wither skeleton skull meaning that it still fades into the background I can even add a thinner stripe to the design by adding this cross shape in here like so and then yeah making sure it’s below those two layers so it doesn’t affect the sort of flower design we have going on here But then bisect this big white stripe down the center so it’s got two stripes there instead of just one we could also do the same thing by adding in the stripe pattern like that and that thins that stripe down to a single single line there and I think that looks pretty good So yeah there’s a whole variety of things you can do here we could make it look more like a flower just by adjusting the color here to make it look a little bit green or something like that you know that there are there are ultimately a lot of different options we Can go with I’m gonna spend a little bit of time designing a banner for founder’s Forge that you guys could reproduce in your own world if you want to I’ll give you the recipe for it in this video but sites like this are very much worth playing around with To discover what’s possible to move layers around you can also change the visibility of the layer just by clicking this little guardian face on the left hand side there’s a whole lot you can do with that to just kind of add or remove layers to check that the design still Looks okay if you take out certain elements and sometimes if you’ve doubled up on stuff you can see which ones you need to take out plenty of stuff you can do with this editor one last thing before we go back to the Minecraft world is I meant to show you the Golden Apple Pattern the mo yang logo let’s change that to a white background and then let’s add that in red there you go so that’s the Mogul hukou that’s the golden apple pattern like I said there’s not really a huge amount you can do with this especially in terms of making Negative space in a design for example if I was to put the oxide daisy pattern in here with let’s say white on this gray background and then if I add the mo yang logo over the top in gray it kind of cuts out weird sections of it it Doesn’t necessarily look all that good there’s some stuff you can do with that some fun effects you can do with certain designs but once again enchanted golden apples are very difficult to get hold of in the game and you probably don’t want to waste one on a banner design Considering the enchanted golden apples are quite powerful if you have one so yeah probably best not to use that in your banner designs I think we’ve seen enough here hopefully you guys will have fun playing around with this you can create your own banners with it but We’re gonna get back into the game once I’ve designed a banner here and we go into design the official banner of founders Forge one of my favorite things about that website is it just gives you all of the recipe ingredients right then and there so all you need to do is put Them together in that order and you have yourself a banner now I’m gonna need some gray wool for this and I’m pretty sure all my sheep are still black in here so let me change some of these over to gray and we will be able to share a Little bit of wolfram then there’s one in there that’s still white somehow as well see if I got some shears in here of course I do I’m so organized now so let’s start off by making ourselves a couple of grey banners we need some a Lime and some green dye both of which I think I should have in here I only need three of those and for cactus greens so that means I’m probably gonna have to smelt up a little bit of cactus plenty of that in the farm not a problem While that smelting I can cast my eye around and see if we can spot an oxide Daisy there probably aren’t all that many in this area over here and that’s a as your bluer let’s see if we can bonemeal the area and get an oxide Daisy to pop up yeah there we go there’s one hiding in the tall grass I got you okay let’s take this back to the house the cactus should be done smelting in the furnace add that to what we have from the chest and we should be ready to Go so here is our pattern we’re gonna start off with a gray banner put that in there and have a stripe of lime down the center the lime pail apparently it’s gonna look like that for the moment I’m gonna add a couple of things to it I Need to stop taking the chunks out of my floor so anyway where will be lime pail yes we’re gonna add four cactus green around like that’s to create a green lozenge which is the diamond shape in the center then we’re gonna move the banner to this bottom slot here add in Sixth grade I to the top and so far it’s gonna look like this not a particularly inspiring banner for the moment but we can do something about that we’re going to add this cross shape in the middle to cut that basically clean in half it’s Not gonna have any effect on the rest of the banner because as you know the rest the banner is already gray gonna take that out now comes the fun part we add the oxide Daisy and some bonemeal to give it that and then we add the wither Skeleton skull and some gray die and this is the banner of founders forge it is a white tulip or as close to a tulip as I think I can get in the game and white tulips are kind of the symbol of founders forge right now because there are a whole Bunch of them that grow up in the planes biome around here and I actually kind of wanted them to be a feature of the area from day one I have this idea that these white tulips are going to grow all around some of the buildings in founders Forge you’ll notice a row of them here and that the magma blocks that are coming up around here are actually kind of corrupting the tulips and turning them orange and red so I like the idea of having the white tulip be the symbol of founders forge and we can put that up On some of the buildings if we want them to look especially patriotic now a cool thing about these banner designs is that once you’ve designed them if you pop a banner in a crafting interface with another banner of the same color it duplicates the design meaning that you Can have more than one and that is a really useful thing when you’re using expensive designs like the skeleton skulls so instead of having to have a wither farm just so you can make enough banners you can just reproduce them by putting them in a crafting table with the same type of Banner that’s a very useful thing now if you want to duplicate it to a banner of a different color that’s not going to be possible so make sure you know what your but your banner design is going to be before you end up making one in the First place that way you can duplicate it as much as you want one other thing we should quickly cover about banners is that they can also be applied to shields you can customize your shield with a banner of basically any type and the design itself will be copied over as Well however the problem with that is that the banner has basically like a 16 pixel wide texture but the area that can be covered by the banner design on a shield is only a 14 pixel wide area those two pixels either side and on top are basically taken up by the shield Border and so instead of the design just being kind of cropped around the outside what it actually does is shrink down the design to try and fit the shield unfortunately what this means is that some of the designs come out looking a little bit wonky they mean that the Skull and crossbones is probably the simpler design so it’s going to be the better one but when it comes to some of the other designs that come out you will find that they come out looking a little bit stretched or corrupted or weird and stuff with a lot of detail especially Banners like this is really not going to work particularly well on a shield I will try and give you an example but I’m not sure okay I cut I would have to make another shield to actually demonstrate that so let me go find the resources for Another shield here we go let’s put a shield in here with one of the two founders forge banners that we have created and then now when I equip the shield you will see yeah not really looking like the design on the banner is it it does not actually looks a little Bit like a weird face let’s put this here so we can compare the two shall we how about that yeah yeah not exactly the same design not exactly representing founders forged the way I would want to but you know that’s just how these things are the shield area wants to fit the entire Banner design in but it doesn’t have enough detail to do so so I think I’ll stick with the skull and crossbones shield for now because that looks appropriately cool doesn’t it I think that’s probably where we going to wrap up at this episode for today as well Folks thank you so much for watching this episode of the Minecraft I will guide have fun designing your own banners send me some pictures of them on Twitter if you like I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with in the meantime don’t forget to leave a like on This episode if you did enjoy it subscribe to my channel if you want to see more and I’ll see you guys soon take care bye for now You Video Information
