I’ve spent the last 6 months attempting to run Minecraft on every single device I Lay My Eyes On from the Nintendo DS light this is outrageous all the way to a 24-year-old iMac G3 no freaking way and even on a pair of smart glasses and In a funny way I’ve kind of become known for being the cannot run Minecraft guy but there’s something you should know see behind every video of me running Minecraft there’s a game developer someone who has spent hours of their life Blood Sweat and tears in an attempt To get Minecraft to run on these completely unconventional devices a recent example is questcraft it’s a project that aims to bring Minecraft to Standalone headsets like The Meta Quest see when major development Studios like Microsoft won’t do it these devs step up and questcraft currently attracts over 45,000 people in their Discord server That’s over 45,000 people who believe in this project and I don’t know about you but I have no idea how these Indie developers do it let alone why they do it I mean we’re talking hours of coding and Bug fixes and managing a massive community and that’s not to mention the Potential legal consequences that can come with unofficially porting a popular title like Minecraft I guess all I’m trying to say is why why would you do it so I spoke to the key developers of questcraft to shed some light on the Underground world of Unofficial Minecraft see here’s the thing about porting game it can be a little bit like the wild west see porting a video game refers to the process of adapting and modifying a video game to run on a different platform or system than it was originally designed for and of course Porting games isn’t unique to Minecraft my personal favorite is a project by James Lambert who’s building everyone’s favorite puzzle game portal for the Nintendo 64 what the heck man that is outrageous for surely the most famous example is Doom I mean it’s got to be the game that’s been ported to the most Number of random devices I mean we’re talking calculators the Apple watch and hilariously someone got Doom running on a pregnancy test but there’s a ton of games out there that major Studios haven’t ported yet and personally they seem worth the work for example Minecraft in VR one of my first Vivid Memories of VR over 7 years ago was me using a Samsung phone strapped to my face I was completely immersed in Minecraft and I literally couldn’t believe it that experience of mining crafting and exploring these vast worlds makes a whole lot of sense in virtual reality now technically you can mine to Your hearts content in PC VR but with the rise of popularity for Standalone VR headsets it got me thinking why hasn’t Microsoft released Minecraft for Standalone VR it checks all the boxes from an experience point of view and Minecraft is the most sold game of all Time but yet there’s not a lot of Hope for Minecraft on the quest but that’s when I stumbled across questcraft questcraft is a project that’s been around the block for a few years now chances I if you’re into VR you’ve probably seen a bunch of YouTubers give It a shot did that rhyme that felt like it rhymed I myself gave it a go and although it’s far from perfect it’s super impressive and it’s safe to say the questcraft team has successfully ported Minecraft to The Meta Quest platform which is insanity given the quests Limited specs and the lack of Official support but I’ll be honest initially I thought man that sounds pretty easy but it didn’t take long to realize how much work has gone into this project and it made me realize I have no idea what it takes to Port a game like Minecraft to a new platform well to find Out I sat down with Quest Craft’s key developers CAD Indie and the judge how did you guys get into Game Dev in general is it something you guys have always done was it because of this project back in 2018 I got into this General Unity development my main Project so far has really been questcraft it’s kind of been the stepping stone for a lot of uh my Development Career in general I was eventually put in as the server owner dropped in as the lead project manager from then on we started growing with the people we have now including judge once He appeared I mean things were like kicked off is that’s when most of our development just skyrocketed and progress was really made and a few other people as well that just really helped push this project to where it is today and get it kicked up off the ground uh I Noticed an issue they were having loading the open XR loader and how that was causing problems I found uh a way to fix that and they were having a little bit of difficulty yeah I just made various commits from there on forward iard them on what is it got Minecraft And VR that makes you want to spend so much energy on it I have a lot of hopes for VR especially in I I go to like a manufacturing type school and I’m seeing uh VR get uh worked into the industry more and more so being able to also Flex A Game Dev part of me in VR is uh really nice but I also really enjoy the community and that’s probably why I’ve stuck around so long is because the community just keeps me going I guess how long ago did it start really picking up steam and in terms of community and Have there been any challenges with that part of this whole development process it was probably around the time I joined because we actually could get like not an image to the actual open XR runtime but uh we could actually see a work in progress image and that’s probably when We started to get everyone started to get hyped I think the main explosion happened when we released I mean we were our our server I believe is a really good metric for this the Discord itself was at I want to say about 4,800 members if I remember correctly and once we Released that trailer I mean within the first 2 days we saw 20,000 people join just off the bat and it’s it’s just continued growing ever since uh the server right now is at 4,500 members and our download for the project itself actually just hit over 2 million making Us the most downloaded game on side quest of all time because it such a big number does that come with like a pressure for myself personally I always have stressed out a little bit because I’m always worried about the code being trying not to find as many bugs as we Have had in the later versions trying to just make sure everything works properly and so one of the ways we do that is through our patreons they get Early Access but in return we also get a little bit of like testing data like they get our early releases and but we Also get a bug test as part of it I I can worry about the project of course in terms of whether it’s it’s perfect here or there but I think the biggest part that kind of ties everything together is the community and whether they’re satisfied with what we’re presenting but That they also understand the limitations we have to go through we’re not like most development companies or even a lot of projects where we kind of just hide behind a wall we try to be out there and talk with our community and you know when whenever there’s an issue We try to be there to fix it instead of you talking to a chatbot or something cuz we think that’s really what gets not only uh gives us uh a better reputation but also gives us a better understanding of our community and what they want and What they need there’s only two of you it’s not a full company it’s not Microsoft right I guess that’s what I’m trying to say we we’ve gotten the claim many times where a lot of people will you know come in this server and say ah you’re making m ions from this project Or you’re doing this or that and you’re corporate I’m just thinking like I mean not really I mean at the end of the day we’re just two people doing this for fun what’s the game plan or have you guys thought about what happens if an official release comes to Quest 3 from Microsoft and Mojang if Microsoft does release something which you know we talk with Microsoft indirectly a lot of the times uh we try to have a good relationship and being good standing with them to make sure Quest craft isn’t in uh any legal trouble or anything like That but let’s say if they were to do something which personally I don’t think they will I still don’t think questcraft would really be in any trouble numbers wise yeah a big part of that is if they do release something it’s I there’s zero doubt in my mind that it’s going to be Based off of Bedrock which doesn’t have the same Freedom that Java the the Java edition of the game has you know it’s not as easily modable it’s not as open as as well as the fact that questcraft is a community project at the end of the Day that you can go look at and you can see how it works and you can see in real time it’s development cycle we’re in the same Market but we’re not in the we’re not the same product you know we’re there’s not competition between questcraft or Microsoft at all and if Anything it would honestly help us a lot more if officially released as VR game on the quest or Pico it it gives more people the idea that hey Minecraft VR exists you know the idea at the end of the day that I think really drives me and judge the most is we’re making Something that not only contributes to VR development but also Minecraft as well as just a community that wants something and we’re providing for them as best as we can I’m not going to pretend like I fully understand the ins and outs of game development but one Thing is for sure both Cad and judge clearly have a massive respect for their team but even more so for the community that surrounds the questcraft project and whether you’re a fan of Minecraft or not it’s hard to deny how sick it is to see this Niche little Community around a Simple concept turn into a fully-fledged project with over 2 million downloads that’s actually out of control I can hardly imagine the energy time and stress that goes into a project like this and all for what well of course For the Love of the Game and the tech but Even more so for the love of the community and its people so what’s next for questcraft I mean we have an update on the way our biggest update yet I won’t speak too much on it but what I can say is that it’ll be worth the wait The the feeling and everything of the project is just it’s so much better and uh we can’t wait to share it with everyone most days amongst work and everything else in life you guys still find a way to keep bringing this game to life so um yeah I appreciate it I Appreciate all the hard work and pump as to see what comes up next Video Information
