Ep05 Spellbound Caves II Developer Commentary (Orange Wool and Victory Cave)

Hi guys vex here welcome back to episode 5 of my spellbound caves 2 developer commentary hey you have to pardon me if i’m a little sniffly this episode okay so last episode i showed you a tree farm and here are the uh they’re the products of the tree farm

We’re converting all of this into coal i either i probably don’t even need to convert all of that the goal but if you’ll note i have well if i add this i’ve got 2400 oak wood logs in the warehouse now uh and that is we have the uh the barrels here the fuel

Already pretty much filled up with charcoal that i’ve made so you kind of have more than we’ll ever need um i was just idling by it as far as apple juice uh minus what i drank during the farming and construction i ended up with just shy of a stack and a half of

Bottled apple juice i think i have more juice than i’ll need for the map at this point way more actually uh now i need some armor and i think just for now i’ll just throw together some copper uh copper armor and we’ll hope we’ll get some decent rolls on it

I need pants i already got boots get a helmet all right good rolls good rolls terrible rolls okay whatever well can’t win them all uh they just won’t get repaired so let’s see yeah we’re missing ten percent of our speed now but we picked up two percent speed there that’s good right

Oh dear it’s night time it doesn’t really matter much so yeah i uh i let this uh well i i took all the saplings out and i broke all the saplings and picked them up so the farm is lying fallow for now uh here is all the saplings that didn’t

Get burned towards the end it was basically uh it was basically running on saplings as fuel and that was enough to keep it going and i didn’t even need to uh burn the logs so i ended up with yeah just letting the logs collect and we were running the entire thing off of

The uh saplings so over here i threw together a simple uh silicone setup and originally i was trying to get them to coexist as diagonals you can kind of do this with very tricky placement but every time i tried it they ended up just killing each other so i wouldn’t

Really bother with it um and i basically built this it’s kind of horrible if i had silk touch i would tear it down but i’m not gonna bother i’ve got two of them and that’s more than i’ll need uh they’ll just produce silk i don’t think i really need that much of it

For anything i just wanted to build a setup i don’t build a setup like this it’s really bad like you’d probably be better off making like a double chest i guess with hoppers going in from either side and that gives you probably want to keep about two blocks between the uh

Silkworms because they can attack through one block walls sometimes uh their behavior is a little inconsistent like sometimes they’ll chill and sometimes they wake up and choose violence and it’s just kind of like a coin flip if they’ll what they’ll do okay so let’s see

We got armor we got a weapon a decent weapon uh our picks and stuff are about to break i threw 15 points in mining so i can use this this diamond pickaxe now so i suppose that’s obsolete um i might as well melt it down right

It’s not like i actually have that much stone so let’s let’s have a look at our quests i don’t have anything to turn in uh i took out a few levels just to pay the uh transportation cost and let’s check our backpack here okay so bag uh

I have a spellbook i need to id and i have an id scroll no not on me i also need to double check these packs and make sure nothing in them because i’ll throw a random loot in there that i pick up to keep inventory clean i’ve got some building blocks i’ve

Got 19 astral diamonds uh let’s see i got plenty of food i got a i got some light i have a backup pick that’s you know honestly i think this thing can just be melted down as can actually uh this anvil is very damaged uh and i think

That because it’s so damaged i would rather scrap it down into the 23 iron ingots rather than risk it dying because if i scrap it when it’s very damaged then i at least get a a pretty good amount of iron back um in fact i get enough to well

It’s like what it’s like at that and then two so uh i lose i end up losing seven iron ingots here but that’s way better than losing losing the whole thing to a breakage but you’re also That if you’re doing this it also basically means that you’re only using the anvil until slightly damaged and once it goes to vary then you’re scrapping i still think it you come out better on your iron um you’re only using the anvil two thirds as much now but you’re also getting back uh

More than two thirds of the iron so i think it’s the better deal if you bother doing it um see here’s a slightly damaged and we can use that to very damaged and then scrap it there’s another very damaged which i think now hold on a second now i think the

Tome of scrapping uh anvil and i think it has to be data value zero i don’t think you can get away with making this using a very damaged one this recipe is better than this recipe but i added this recipe here the one that just takes the four iron just for

Convenience because there’s been so many times i just i just want one tone of scrapping i don’t want eight of them i just want the one can i just have the one please so but since this is very damaged i’m also going to throw this in here too and i want my

My iron quickly there we go all right uh i’ll keep the iron on me in case i need to make something in the field um yeah that’s that’s pretty much it yeah i’ll keep the iron on me so i have a backup weapon here a steel hammer that’s pretty good i got this

Weapon now my wands my wands aren’t doing so good um they’re almost out basically and we get a mind trick okay you know i may as well keep these id scrolls on me in case uh so i’ve got some i got some mana flasks here and i can refill them i’m

Starting to wonder if maybe i should take my astral diamonds i got 19 here and go to the astral market and buy a no uh buy a soul binding wand so i never ever lose it or do i hold out for maybe a better one that i might find is loot in

Intersection two there is a wand that’s a secret wand in intersection two and it’s a pretty good one and i could use that i believe it’s a lightning wand custom lightning wand and maybe i should use that you guys told me to use the secret loot uh pretty overwhelmingly it

Was like 75 upvotes versus to use the loot versus uh like five to not like it was really overwhelming so um i think i might switch this out for this ring then uh the thing is though as far as the secret loot goes i mean i’ve got this astra

Diamond in these bottles of grape juice i suppose and it’s i don’t really need any of it like immediately uh so the thing about this map is it’s intentionally designed so that you can grind around in your base and grind up stuff uh and basically increase your avatar

Strength like trying to go farm for different types of gear and stuff uh and if you play your cards right you can get you can get like pretty good armor like diamond armor or i could sit here and farm and try to get the netherrite ingots to make another right armor uh

Pretty early in the map and it’s intentional that you can do that if you want to um i don’t think i will i think i’m not gonna grind a bunch to just like get diamond armor or anything and i’ll just mostly use what i find because the map’s not that difficult

Okay so i wanted to go to the in and double check i really want an arcane workbench though uh i want to emphasize magic on this playthrough since it is spellbound caves and that’s why i think i might use that uh use that wand the secret one that i know

About in intersection two uh i could just grind up this blonde of sparks but it would save me some time having to grind it up uh what do you got do you have okay you’ve got the lapis lazul and id scrolls as well actually and then enchanting table i don’t really want the

Enchanting table yet i’m not in a rush to do that uh you can get in the changing table and then get silver weapons specifically silver pikes because the like the silver pike only takes one silver ingot and silver is hyper enchantable uh so for a relatively low investment of

Enchanting levels you can get like mending to show up as an example on your silver pike then you take a toma scrapping and you rip the mending off of it and then you put the minting on something else that’s one strategy you can do um

Let’s see so i i could just take this but i’d rather not you know i i am role-playing slightly i’m role-playing enough to not just like roof apart npc possessions and take them um but i would like to make my own arcane workbench arcane wrench and so i need the lapis and that

That’s basically all i need and she sells the so she sells the thing that you need um and it was how much 12 gr no 1 grand okay i can come up with a grand let’s see so we’re going to make some chips and grand magic crystal There’s a grand and you know what i’ll while i’m here i’ll just go ahead and buy two lapis because i think i can just what’s that what’s an even divisible uh number that’s divisible i can make another five okay ah she ran out i’ll have to wait for her to restock that’s okay

So i got my lapis uh stone and that doesn’t have silk touch or anything on it while i’m here i guess i’ll hit up rookie cave because i never actually went in rookie cave uh can i jump over this okay i’m fine so rookie cave is over

Here and it is a very simple dungeon that’s probably max spawned during the daytime that’s all right not really worried um i should have decent enough gear until unless i run into anything like crazy i suppose i’ll light it up too this is rookie cave anybody down here in the little monster

Spawning cubby so if you uh bother looking up you can tell that uh there’s a different block and there’s a ledge like right up here there that stuff can fall down on you from above uh but the challenge here is basically natural spawns and then there is a

Uh there is a zombie spawner hey oh hello aren’t you fancy hey thanks for the xp i needed that so i kind of want to fight some zombies maybe another blight will spawn or a bubbly fubbly and get some more loot so i have the diamond pick and i’m ready

To basically kill this thing uh and i can make more meat out of the zombie flush poop zombies also can drop books which is kind of cool come on faster go faster yes okay okay wait a minute wait a minute oh i asked for it didn’t i [Laughter]

Uh i think it’s about i think the spawner might be about dead so what i’m gonna do is lure these guys over to this side of the map come on you guys hurry up i’m making a video go go go oh my god you’re inept well there are zombies right

I’ll just come over here and pop it out stop it okay which one of you actually is doing damage you you’re actually doing damage ah too many zombies all right turn the corner i just need to heal up for one sec ah there you go he’s fast enough to actually follow me

Oh i’m down to two hearts maybe i should back off and heal up oh i’m poisoned wait a minute now how long am i poisoned oh that cost me so much hp you stupid alchemist oh that’s okay i’m still at two bars so if the player gets overwhelmed you

May be wondering what’s up with this very uh interesting waterway here so you saw where i came over here and got up here and basically the players put into the perfect position to like if they got overwhelmed by zombies to just knock them back and they’ll go down there and basically be stuck

So it’s a forgiving area to like let the player get overwhelmed and then retreat and have like they can have a corner here to like poop them into the into the water i don’t think this area has the like blocks of resources behind the coal or anything

Uh for such an early area i don’t think i did that because at this point the player might want the exp from the mining more than the actual coal depending on how they’re doing yeah i don’t think i left blocks of resources behind these and i don’t really need to mine a bunch

Of copper i i think i have plenty i like the chest behind here though and it’s some basic copper loot may actually be better than no not my uncommon one is actually the thing here uh and then there’s a is this a secret is this a secret or yeah okay it’s kind

Of a secret uh random gems list one a random wooden weapon oh boy gotta get that random wooden weapon and music disc fantastic i got another ring of the berserker oof and i want the chests because i use them in automation stuff and it just saves me time from having to make them

Although considering how much wood i have is it really saving time if if i could have just crafted a stack of chests like instantly with all the wood that i have is it really saving time maybe chests aren’t worth picking up for me hi guys oh hello no oh multiple blights oh god

Okay we’re just trading hits now oh there’s monsters in here that have uh oh i’m down here this is bad i went the wrong way i got turned around well at least i broke line of sight multiple blights that’s a wake-up call are you paying attention did you fall asleep at the keyboard

[Laughter] yes i was paying attention and i am alive and thank you for the xp levels is there any more xp up here okay let’s carefully poke our heads up we shouldn’t see any blights for a little while because uh of the way blight spawning works so there’s basically an invisible meter

That fills up as you kill monsters and the more monsters you kill the the faster you’ll see a blight and once you kill a blight the meter resets so those two blights probably spawned because i killed so many enemies from that zombie spawner that my blight meter was like fully charged and

As night fell it it rolled up some blights outside and now that i’ve killed them the meter’s reset is that’s basically how it works which is how you see blights on a regular basis while adventuring because it’s based off of uh the more monsters you kill the more likely it will be that

A blight will spawn up until you kill a blight at which point the chance is reset so if you kill if your meter is at like zero there’s still a chance to see a blight it’s just incredibly low so it’s like it’s random but it’s also stacked in such a way that you’re

Guaranteed to see one eventually so i think that i think that explanation was exhaustive and makes sense to everybody and if you still if you don’t understand uh you see blights regularly as you play basically there’s one there i really want that blight uh it looks like it’s on

It looks like it’s a spider which is not too hard to deal with he’s got a small hitbox and that’s mostly the challenge so i’m going to put my back to the tavern before i engage him and let’s see what random stuff followed me home

Oh looks like there’s a zombie on me and a skeleton that’s just zooming around on a spider okay where’d the blight go and every now and then blights just kind of de-spawn ocean’s unfortunate either he despawned or he zoomed over there no that’s a different creature the only

Don’t they blight to aggro on me i don’t want the other things to aggro on me that looks like i killed them yes xp thank you and there was another blight over here that i would really like what are you you’re a skeleton i think are you are you the skeleton or the

Spider go away get out of my whoa no give me the xp did i get did i get credit for the xp i see some xp on the other side let’s run and get it i’m at 41. oh okay sadness well i got my uh

Here we go we got two books off the zombies let’s go ahead and just check to see what they are now put them on the bar and id scrolls you would normally probably oh i got telekinesis and snowball you would normally probably save your id scrolls for uh master spells

Uh but in this map there’s so many id scrolls and chests that i can be kind of flippant with using them and not really care okay let’s see so i have my lapis block and i think i have all the other ingredients needed to make my own arcane workbench so let’s do that

Okay let’s see here uh we’ve got the unwanted copper gear is oh i know when the gears burned up that was fast let’s see we want uh we need some i think we need some solid stone uh-oh um we have andesite no we have diorite no do we have granite oh well piffle

Uh ah i need to make an arcane workbench and i don’t actually do i have cobble in here i have charred cobblestone i don’t actually think charred cobble is oh god you can yeah charred cobble is uh destroyed basically it’s kind of worthless doesn’t really doesn’t really do much um hey may

Well the thing is like even if i make a uh lava grinder with a lava and a water source block or to get cobblestone i don’t necessarily know if uh i’m gonna use it that much let’s see there’s a pocket of uh diorite right here and that’ll do just fine

I suppose i’ll mine a few pieces out in case i need small amounts of cobblestone for something else soon and let’s square this off and make it nice looking yeah i should do now this right here uh astute players mate huh astute players may notice some uh funkiness with the that right there

Oh my god i’m just burning these yeah this right here you’ll see i’m such a derp oh my gosh this is a moat uh this is a moat i intentionally dug this out right here so that the staircase is safe because there’s this overhang right here and the overhang basically has a moat

Dug behind it so that this entire line right here is impossible for monsters to pathfind to you so yeah you’re welcome [Laughter] oh my gosh i used like 18 trillion grapple scrolls i just used every grapple scroll that was ever in existence right there and i have to sneeze Ah pardon me okay uh let’s see those go in there and that gets turned into stone and we need an arcane workbench and we need any crystals i think we got gold nuggets what are we missing me we’re missing the lapis which was here yep throw that in there

And then we need the purple thing which is made out of purple wool which is made of grapes i know i have grapes right oh no oh no i did i i know i kept a few i told you guys i was gonna keep a few

Please tell me i left them in here oh thank the lord okay i thought i used the last of my grapes uh so we’re gonna do a little trick here that has five durability uh but if you shift click it’ll do it all and uh instead of doing only five and leaving

Seven it’s gonna do all 12 of these like that so a little hack i guess you can do to make the most of your five durability uh spindle that you get from the quest okay so we got the purple purple i think i have uh there’s the blue there’s blue flowers

And red flowers near spawn that you can also make purple die with so in hindsight i guess i didn’t need to freak out that much all right we have everything we need what’s he going to use mr crystals that’s fine whatever and hey we have our own magic workbench fantastic now now uh

What about bookshelves oak they all just basically take grand and then the gilded so just a bit of they take some gold small amount of gold and a grand crystal and hey hey hey we still have uh a grand around here somewhere right we oh yeah we got eight we have eight grands

You know what how about we move this uh here we may end up moving this shortly so let’s see i would like to make a bookshelf let’s do this we have lots of oak so how many does it take it takes six make a bookshelf that’s two bookshelves and we have

So we probably need one more batch of these and now we can make two more bookshelves all right and that was evenly divisible that gives us four so one two three four okay all right all right this is a little we’re jumping the gun a little bit i do believe that

This will make it a more quality of life to try and use my wand so the bookshelf ui pops up on the left now that we’ve got them placed and they work pretty similar to like the enchanting table books i think uh i think they work out to like there maybe

You can’t simply experiment so i don’t need to tear down my secrets thing now um is there any more did i miss anymore books book nope all right cool now let’s see here so we got the wanda sparks and let’s sort by i’ll sort by element i

Guess and so now we’ve got yeah fire there’s chain lightning i i cannot do can’t really do any of the really cool ones um i can replace magic missile with lightning arrow so that’s kind of a huge improvement and hey there’s oh hey there’s feather fall put that on the empty slot sweet

As far as earth goes grapples apprentice and i really don’t care about magic missile all my earth wand thank you very much why isn’t it changing am i stupid oh this is a novice oh yes i am dum-dum these are novice wands i haven’t even upgraded them yet ah

I gotta grind i gotta grind the wands up how dare i have to like learn and gradually improve well at least i can refill the see i know i’m going to intersection two and i know there’s a bait there’s like a mid-level lighting wand just hidden in the wall

And i kind of just want to use that rather than having to grind up this actually i was thinking of just buying a uh soul binding wand to make sure i never lose it but uh i should probably just wait till a secret one since you guys are cool

With me using the secrets especially since like i could literally just go like wait till night time and just you know shoot shoot spells at enemies you don’t even need to shoot spells at enemies you can just you just do that i recommend uh using the element of the wand

Uh and then switching back and forth between spells if possible so i guess i would do like well that’s the one’s dead i think i’ll just leave these here they’re not really they’re they’re kind of dying uh let’s open this i got a a lootless two loot crate i got a

Oh heck yeah hitting a creature with a lightning wand shoots lightning at nearby creatures heck yeah uh it does not exactly have the you know what i think we’ll just swap that out um i kind of wanted to experiment with this and try a battle like a battle wand and i think the

Secret one might actually be uh may it might be pretty good for that it might actually have attack damage on it which would be kind of cool okay let’s get out of the base and go do stuff uh let’s take out a few levels and i wanted to take

This and repair it with this and then let’s uh name it um what’s it got on it sharpness 2 i don’t know warhound that seems like a cool name so now we have a rare uh steel warhammer uh you know what maybe i should have grabbed a uh no thank you

Tide mode on no turn that off there we go um oh at that i often do a double at symbol in this just to like clear this so that it’s not in my face when i don’t want it okay uh oh i remember why hide mode was toggled

Uh i was working on vexylvania and i was looking for an item that was hidden by hidden normally for the map uh let’s see here there’s a silver warhammer with smite seven good god that is that’s a bit chunk uh that has sharpness too i kinda wanna tear this um

Do i get into the tomes of scrapping are we doing that already maybe kind of i’m leaning towards it maybe not though i i was just kind of hoping i had an unbreaking book there’s the divine unbreaking hoe god that’s depressing oh all right i’ll make tomas scrapping just for this

I need a book we have no paper gee if only there was some way to get paper i don’t i don’t know i just i just wish just wish there was some way maybe get it i don’t know uh reed spawning rng in nation worlds can uh die in a fire

Is kind of my feelings towards uh towards that that’s probably enough right hey it’s evenly divisible now we got paper cool yeah that’s that probably isn’t enough um it is not it is not a the the route of taking the pressure plates and like pressing them into parchment which is

Basically what you’d be doing is making paper from wood is uh really inefficient for i think what you get but compared to reads right um and it’s involves more steps and it’s just kind of more of a pain but it is there to give you some paper

For your crafting needs if you don’t find reads at all which you could be really stranded and now we got books and now i i i just want one see this is an example of where i just literally want one of the damn things uh yeah i’m breaking four heck yeah uh

One two three four five donating a 10. i bet it costs 10 to put it on what do you guys think ah only four so i’m breaking level four that’s a that’s a pretty good war hammer i think that’ll last us a while and we still got our fish bunker here

Literally just for bonking fish all right uh i can finally get rid of this golden carrot juice yay all right let’s get out of here and go get the orange wool and i don’t have a i don’t have a range okay i should have a ranged option of some kind

I’m depressed about these these uh maybe my ranged option should be the fishing rod and i should pull them over to me [Laughter] uh how about there’s a does anything have what has power on it just that huh what about my bow options what are we looking at hey a punch one

Oh that’s okay that’s better than nothing it is is ranged we have plenty of bolts so let’s get out of here and go get the orange wool and maybe another wool and maybe grab some fish along the way okay so the orange wool is back in here

And it’s the hint where you have like the uh like where is the water coming from you know can i get in here without killing myself i should be able to land in the water properly still kind of close huh okay so there’s these things in the way and i don’t really

I don’t really want the canteens uh and the rest of the stuff is not completely worthless so this is victory cave and it’s very spoopy but uh still a beginner area wow did i pick up some uh strength from somewhere why am i one-shotting these guys dude you’re dead you’ve been dead for

Like 10 years stop it holy crap he’s still going he’s screaming at me from the afterlife uh where’s my torches great well that’s right there’s my torches how about that oh there’s a diamond nugget in disguise come on you oh you’re a diamond tool so you’re durable yay i was gonna just

Quit the game if that had divine on it that was a fancy looking guy wow okay you’re kidding me [Laughter] a golden pickaxe you couldn’t be a diamond pickaxe or a steel one or a copper one or even a tired one okay still biting and breaking it’s got on

Breaking five and mending i guess i could scrap it or i could use it i feel like i really earned that one though that gold pickaxe just freaking all right so in here is a what is this is this the haunted tool spawner are you let me have a look at you

So haunted tools don’t actually aggro right off the bat they wait for you to hit them which is kind of neat right um the ancient vase spawner is where where you at i made this map you would think i would just remember but that’s asking a little too much

Also is this a mimic ah yes me me curse me uh for making mimic map thank you yes thank you alchemist enemy for being a good alchemist thank you yes i know all right we’ll throw all the loot in here and that’ll help me clean my inventory out you please stop that

Which one’s alchemist you are they social agro can’t tell oh god they do a lot of damage though because they they have the the attack value of the tools so i’m going to back off and use this conveniently placed iron door okay alt don’t you no oh no

Oh no they’re coming through the greats stop stop it do the stupid plates and stuff are coming alive okay it looks like the haunted tools social aggro which is hilarious oh by the way here’s the monster grinder you guys are welcome map is literally designed to help you beat it literally actually intentionally

Designed to help you like kill the feet get the loot you know maybe you’d have to dig down like one block here you could even you could even put right here along this uh like hoppers in fact oh damn i thought i had a few wood ones on me [Laughter]

That’s stuck in my head why did i do this yeah like a line of hoppers right here to let the water flow over and then just collect the stuff as it flows past the hopper all right come here you you go oh that’s the one i already put stuff in whoopsie

We will review the drops later i do need my torches though or just yes i don’t really need them need them but oh yeah i want the emerald i don’t think i have too many of those and i will pay for my greed with elongated swimming times okay apparently haunted tools are socially

Aggro are we chill now kind of maybe can’t tell all right so that’s the yeah that’s the vase we don’t want the vases anymore we have we’re good on that i will take the astral diamond and that’s that’s full so we’re going to put that down there so you guys really social aggro

Yeah yeah they are look at that i’m kind of hoping for a diamond tool to spawn would be kind of cool uh a haunted tool spawner is not a bad way to get cobblestone from the cobblestone tools in a map where you just really have nothing

Or smelting fuel for that matter off the wood tools uh so we pretty much forget for or go for or went what’s the present tense of forego for goad no how do i english anyway so we got uh let’s see how many bubbly fumblies came out of that a few i know

We’ve got we got one diamond and it wasn’t unfortunately it was a hoe which kind of sucks um we did get some gold though so again uh because of the smelting down the haunted tool spawners are kind of good for raw resources if you’re like have no other source

And you might be better off farming down the entire spawner rather than taking the astral diamond from it depending on the situation that’s a rocket creeper you guys i found out do actual damage kind of artemy just wants to eat your attack directly and just see but i don’t want

My armor to break more than it needs to if that’s possible so there’s the fleecy box right off the bat and this is a great spot if you want to quickly do this you can grapple up there or you can try to take the fun path and

I think i’ll try to take the fun path oh my god it stuck in my head it’s that song from a beauty and the beast the teacup the i think right maybe i’m misquoting my disney songs but now now i’m going to think of that song every time i see the haunted tools

Because it’s like yes the objects are coming to life so the fun path is basically some fairly generous um vine ladders placed here that you can walk around on and uh oh i hear a wizard and a witch for that matter oh geez okay let’s get the crossbow out

Do i just peek over well the witch is dead okay i heard a wizard i see where are you hello big zombie oh no oh geez you know this little i’m surprisingly safe right here it seems because the monsters can’t oh it’s a oh it’s a blight wizard cool

Maybe he’s even got a backpack suck lead commie scum eep you is he stuck in water i really don’t want him to resp ah heavenly and down you go all right so torches stop natural spawns but they don’t do anything against spawners so if there’s any spawners up here all right

What i wonder what spells the blightwizard has he probably doesn’t have any special spells like he doesn’t get tougher by being a blight wizard he just has more hp oh he’s he i think he’s healing himself oh his drops are going to fall in the water can you come up on land

Like actually can you is it possible for you to get over here i also need to be very careful about like don’t get cocky around the wizards because they can have some spells that’ll counter your seemingly invincibleness like they have a chance of like one of the ones that some of my players

Just hate but i i’m gonna leave in because it does present a completely decked out character with some conundrum or challenge at all is telekinesis and he will yank the item in your hand out of your hand so your plus 10 000 sword of death that you spent 30 years
