Family Bushcraft Camp Build-off – Survival Shelter Competition

Okay so we’re both ready i’m ready dude you guys have to see this check this out where is he where is he it’s so crazy he’s literally buried under are you more intense man i can’t open my eyes What is up adventure agents agent tex here today we are out in the wilderness of the pacific northwest and we are going to do a family bushcraft build-off competition facing off in this competition it will be us the south family versus the johnson family all right is everyone ready to do

The family bus crash yeah all right all right everyone so we have two landscapes to choose from in order to build these bushcraft shelters we have two hours to build them over here on my right we have fern deep ferndeep has its own unique resources it has a lot of shade

It has ferns and it has some fallen trees that will work great for the structure over here on our left we have alder downs alder downs is named alder downs because in an ice storm recently a lot of the alder trees fell down and they are fantastic for building shelters

And there is a plethora of other resources like these bracken ferns in the area that you could use to build your shelter but how do we decide who gets to choose rock paper scissors good question good questions no not rock paper scissors we have something even more intense an axe battle between me

So in order to determine which family gets to choose which geographical location to build their shelter on the two dads me and kylian are going to go head to head in a competition of camouflage stealth hide and seek are you ready agent brightside oh i’m so ready all right you look ready

He told me earlier that he brought his a game i brought my t game so yeah so we have 15 minutes to hide ourselves in this field right here after 15 minutes each family is going to look for us and agent trinity agent hummingbird agent axe

Are going to look for agent bright sides agent energy agent wrestle agent shell agent flower and agent bear are all going to search for me whichever family finds either me or bright side first that is the family that gets to choose the geographical location of the build

They have five people searching we only have three we forgot there is one other agent that we have on our team and that is agent tracker okay so we have 15 minutes to hide starting now all right i got it you got it yeah all right let’s go

Agent brightside is a really smart dude so i’ve got to step my game up all right it’s time to hide i’m gonna go ahead and use this tool for hiding okay so i’m trying to figure out where to hide in this field i could hide in the brackens over there

But the problem is i have this black shirt on and not really good for camouflage we need to come out with a shirt that’s more camouflage agents this right here is what we call alder downs in an ice storm a lot of these older branches fell this is actually kind of a makeshift

Shelter already there’s not enough fern cover here but if i pull up some ferns like this and put a bunch of them like that right there and build kind of a shelter wall i think i can make it look natural enough to where they won’t find me let’s give it a shot

I know agent tex knows this property a lot better than i do he’s been up and down these woods a lot more than i have so i’ve got to get creative so what i’m going to do is i’m going to dig out some turf and i’m gonna make a

Natural turf cloak to hide under but i know that they’re gonna be able to see the disturbance in the land so i’m gonna cut it out in a place that i’m not gonna hide and i’m gonna graft it somewhere else i gotta be careful not to use all my

Energy because this is just to choose which location we’re gonna build in i still gotta have energy enough to build there you are we need your help don’t leave come back i know this might be a bit ambitious uh i’m six foot three inches tall so i gotta cut out a pretty big

Uh chunk of grass but we’ll make it work all right there we go all right trip number one what are you doing oh my gosh he’s taking this way too seriously i better step up my game agents this looks great but i don’t know if it’s gonna be his if

He’s literally covered by the earth that they walk on they may not even look down you hear agent tracker she’s barking at something what i’m going to do is cut a trench out for me to lay in so it’s not too much of a hump where my body is oh

This is rough who knew this challenge would be called bearing yourself alive and like this so agent oh bright side has a shirt that it actually matches the terrain really bad idea for me to come out here for this competition with this kind of shirt so go ahead and

Hide that right there agent texas pretty confident over there so all right this is what i’m dealing with here i got a little trench dug out so hopefully my bigger parts of my bodies aren’t sticking out too much i think i might dig a little bit more back and actually

Lay my head into that mound there and then i’m gonna lay down and just start covering up my my body my extremities hopefully some of these grub aren’t gonna have a heyday with my body but maybe they’ll think i’m dead and start helping me decompose i’m gonna lay down in this little trench

Going on i don’t figure what to do with my feet i got such big feet all right here we go moment of truth bury myself alive i mean pretty good you can’t really see the transition there’ll be a little hump hopefully hidden in the middle of the field they’re gonna think i’m actually

In the deeper stuff where asian texas that’s my goal is to kind of hide up front where it’s maybe a little more obvious if i’m just hiding and then uh they’ll walk right past me and go find him oh yeah there we go yeah this is good

It’s like kind of like a spa you know a mud bath you go to the spa you cover yourself and soak for a while so what do you think agents do you think they’ll be able to tell does that look obvious i think it looks pretty good we’ll see

Got her she’s on our team so we’re on the trail and we have to start scanning the field we found agent bride’s side but we can’t tell anybody okay where are this they real rough i don’t think they could have gotten there oh i already got nettled ouch nettle already I found i’m not down there no agent hex did we find him oh man he already agent check’s already got found so everybody come and check out where he check this out oh oh you’re sweating are you okay oh you have to be so hot right now

I i was hiding and i was like if he wins he totally deserves it high end of flight over dude that that was awesome i was actually like i was so competitive but i was actually legit rooting for him because i was like i had a little bit of help from asia

Just a little bit all right we won the hide and seek challenge i’m gonna go rinse off really quick so that i can breathe and get ready for this build off give me five agent wrestle agent russell actually found both of us he found you he said within like like

30 10 or 30 seconds of getting here i was like and he but he kept quiet congratulations dude all right so you have won the prize of being able to choose which area so what do you think is it going to be alder downs or is it going to be

Fern deep i had a chat with my team okay and uh i think we decided that we were gonna go with fern deep all right we’re gonna go up the hill let’s get to it all right all right but first first actually we because we lost we actually get to choose

Our tools that we’re going to use we have all these all these bushcraft tools all right so agent hummingbirds got a hatchet we got a saw here it’s a tracker where were you we needed your help what about one of these hatchets and a machete and a machete okay all

Right we definitely need an adventure agent survival knife you can get these at the adventureagents.com shop they are fantastic fantastic survival knives shovel yes need a shovel all right so which axe do you want the little one of the big one probably whichever one you i say the little one

Is going to be a little bit easier to wield soon and then one more thing do we want the katana boy or this all right here probably the katana board the katana boy all right let’s take the katana boy so we also get three deals of paracord each we may not

Need that much but all right agents so the rule is we have two hours to build these survival shelters and their survival shelters are going to be judged based on three different criteria functionality livability and beauty or aesthetics right okay and the judges are gonna be agent strongman

And agent db our neighbor al all right so we have two hours starting now go go go let’s do it good luck guys not too much good luck bad luck y’all so it looks like we’re walking on a game trail yeah which would be like a

Nature’s path all the way to yeah right yeah let’s say she’s asian totally right this is a game trail leading into the forest and so that’s a good place to start i think we’re building the shelter look at that you like it yeah that one this is agent training

This is actually a spot where we have already built a box for it like years ago we built in this exact spot so you have a good eye this tree right here is a giant tree and it has uh its old fir tree and has a hemlock tree growing out of it

And check this out again yes that will we have plenty of fat wood right here so this could be a wall that we could build our structure off of yeah i think it’s cool but i don’t think we should just settle on this i think we

It’s a good one okay that’s a good one i’ve tasted this season what’s that for fire yeah so we have a dead alder this alder broke off look at that just splintered it because of all the ice that was here in the winter so here’s another area this is actually

The older downs right here what do you think agent trinity well it’s a nice big open space but we need we need trees to work with right yeah i think you’re right agent trinity’s right i think that we should be working off of the trees we could build

A structure leaning off of there and use the trees as a wall that’s for sure um that now we would have to clear out this area beneath because there’s lots of like blackberry thorns all over the place it was perfectly cleared out really soft uh beneath there already

But it looks like we found a lot of the material we need look at all this right here this stuff right here this is perfect for building and it’s not that far from there what are you hauling stuff into that spot i think that spot yeah the first spot is the best

Okay i think agent trinity should pick the livability space because you’re pregnant you need that spot where you feel like this is your nest right yes all right so we picked the spot now we got to pick the structure so let’s go over there we’re going to be building

Here yeah so let’s bring our tools over there and pick the structure okay all right agent bright side what is the game plan let’s listen up to daddy okay he’s going to give us the game plan what is your vision i think i want to do some sort of suspension fort

Okay that’s that’s uh the weight of it is pushing into the crotch of a tree so we need to find okay and some of these that could work look promising over here okay so i’m loving this tree there’s kind of a split in the world okay

Growing and i feel like we can get a bigger log to do some sort of lean to uh fort in this flat area here okay all right oh all right well then we better get started uh we have this this down alder here that actually is pretty thick and and it

Goes pretty far back so i think i’m gonna try to chop off a big section to use to arch into um the crotch of our tree over here this is a beefy alder here agent russell and agent shell well this is gonna be our support right here that you’re sitting on so i

Want you guys to come through no no don’t cut it in half unless you cut all of these little branches off of it okay [Applause] it’s amazing oh yes oh we have essential oils it smells good you smell good she’s like what are you doing look agent text

This would be kind of cool it’s like your entry door dude yes look at this it’s like a hobbit hole interesting it’s like perfect yeah this is definitely the archway for our entry pole right here and right here and we want to stick across that and then we want sticks across that and

Then across to there all the way there okay that’s a good idea all right i like it we can lay all the branches down and we can get a bunch of bracken ferns and lay them on top and we have a little one like a pole here

A pole over here yeah and then work with everything like this i think so yeah down this way so there’ll be a little bit of a little bit of a slant way yep i think so i think that’d be great we we’re going to make this so we

Can stand up and i think that’s going to be a little too much but uh this is going to be great great yeah all right you ready to get started i’m ready all right let’s do it how many arm lengths two two i think two uh let’s just do two arm lengths

Do two and a half so agent axe is getting the beam that’s gonna go across here and i’m gonna get a y post so what we need you two to find is another beam so up inside there about a foot all the way to there stretch your arm like that paracord this

We’re going to paracord it to that yeah so arm length more than one so one and a half i’d say because longer is better it can always go over to here yeah all right agent trey this is your saw that thing is so sharp so be really careful

Agent trinity for those of you who haven’t noticed is how many weeks pregnant i am 39 weeks pregnant 39 weeks five no six more days and i’ll be 40 weeks and she’s out building a bushcraft survival shelter agent rainbow’s giving me that is beast mode nice you lead it forward

Through our nice entryway all right oh you okay agent hummingbird i barely have any news no that’s half of it all right hey hey hey you two listen i will take that away from you if you cannot find a way to share well okay stay hydrated my friends

Okay so we got the first beam up here we just need to put one more here and one more here but they’re playing dirty aren’t they they’re spying on us so i think we should go and spy on them so i’m filming her um the emini the emini so we’re spying on them

I see a little river spy over there we see a spy coming in on our territory get out of here spy should we go to work what did you do agent how are you doing you slide on them i filmed spying on you you did give me five so

What did their fort look like um did you see what it looked like nope you didn’t go you went all the way over there you didn’t see what their fort looked like i went over there but i didn’t scream she didn’t have ill intent she just went to see them

Well here it is this is our shelter right here this spot right here yeah we’re just really getting started what we’re getting started we’re trying to build uh tp right here yeah what do you think it looks pretty good doesn’t it yeah pretty difficult um a little bit better than this okay

Would you say it’s better than this maybe what if i told you this wasn’t a real shelter we were just messing around So i’m trying to drill into this rotten log here this nurse log so that i can just jam the beam in there and it’ll hold it in place it’s like a primitive drill ah i think that’ll work oh nice agent trinity is doing a lot of fantastic work here so

Right so we could use i okay we i could use more times too so the time is arbitrary the competition is not and so if we both get the same amount of time it doesn’t matter if we extend the time yeah in my mind right now definitely okay so

Right now or what i’m doing it’s not bad it looks good i mean one person could sit under it you could only lean up against that tree you couldn’t no you could sleep there you could sleep there and then we got a fire yeah we just gotta clean it up yeah we

Got this all right on the bright side we’re trying to figure out a way to plug in the holes on the outside of our shelter there and we figured we are in burn veep so what a better resource than ferns to use to do that so i was talking with agent tex earlier

Today and he said that the ferns grow back pretty quickly so if we take just a little bit of ferns from each bush that we harvest from uh it shouldn’t kill the plant and they’ll be able to grow back so that’s what we’re gonna do

To fill in the gaps of our fern deep shelter i’d rather have this than my birthday you think this day is more fun than your birthday math yeah that’s really nice what part of this day is the best look at the fort building the fart with your family yeah can i kiss you

My hiding spot we’re going to use them to cover the front and the roof of the shelter shout agent tracker oh dude it’s a gate that is a great idea so agent axe has been building his own bushcraft shelters on his channel and so he’s really got the wheels

Turning so that’s a great idea oh my gosh who did this did you do this this like path thing right here yeah that is so nice wow little things like this that it’s like here this is leading you to here right and then you open your gate let’s see open the gate

We need more ferns we need them quick yeah we do yeah oh look what agent flower just brought us some flowers some flowers and look i added some some of them add a few more around our archway oh yeah that is beautiful wow will that work for the betting agent trinity yes

This way we’re making a bed right here it is a bit of a slant but our heads can be elevated i guess what do you have there more flowers from agent flower can you lay down on there see how it feels is that good oh oh my back is pregnant

Lantern right here hanging on a post because we are very homey aesthetic can i get a hashtag aesthetic all right so we have 15 minutes a little bit less than 15 or like five minutes left so what we’re doing here is we’ve got backpacks hanging up we’ve got

Some moss that we’re just bedding down and he is shaving down a log to lay right here in the front so it kind of looks a little bit more cozy and uh comfortable because like i said we just didn’t do the shelter aspect as much but it looks fun doesn’t it matter

There’s a judge but we don’t get anything it’s just about the fun and is it fun math agent bear it is this has been a blast we love it it’s been some great bonding time with our kids for sure especially you agent bear huh um All right well we’re about done here guys oh boy i don’t know i don’t know what the south’s looks like but we’re about to find out agent axe is over here help it out where the gate can i get some i uh i used it to make three tiers

Instead of just two we only got a couple minutes left i think we’re pretty much wrapped up here it doesn’t look like much but we definitely spent a good amount of energy we got a secret helper oh don’t tell agent tex but we recruited agent axe to help us

Don’t know which shelter is whose or whose soldier is which i haven’t seen yet okay right so we’re about to go and see this one up here this is called fern deep so we have a three-tier criteria here livability functionality and style and so livability if you were living here how would you

Like it functionality how do the different aspects of the shelter and and the the camp function and then style how does it look aesthetics right okay you ready okay all right let’s do it totally [Laughter] confused nice how many people are we supposed to judge this for like for one person

Maybe two or seven yeah maybe two maybe two restricted to two like two yeah it still feels warm over here it’s got this nice bench the bench serves as like two things it’s like a edge for the bed yeah and something to sit on your platform

Good guy i like this firewood over here small and big so you could start a fire i brought my uh mirror thing here so we can inspect underneath the roof see how tight it is yeah this is a nice touch being able to see because if you were off in the distance

Relieving yourself let’s say for an example and you had to find your way back although you might be if the fire’s in that state it might be kind of hard to see but this lets off a lot of light so i like that all right so you ready to move on to the

Next one let’s do it yeah all right oh wow this one looks yeah quite a bit um more shelter inside wow a lot more room [Laughter] catches fire yeah that’s one thing both of them are right next to a big tree yeah so i think they both use that same idea of building next to a tree and utilizing the branches of the tree for cover that’ll help with the rain too

Yeah trees kind of should drain no i don’t need this really because we’re already in here good construction there well it’s going to be hard judging between yeah that’s a tough decision ah feels pretty dirty yeah that one’s real solid yeah you think you’re ready as ready as your evil be

All right so the judges are gonna sit here and watch this beautiful beautiful skyline here and decide who shall be the winner what the world are you doing the judges are here have a seat at the judge’s seat this is the driver’s seat judges also get hot dogs and

Marshmallows if they want some all right so let’s hear it all right so agent db and i have collaborated our scores and the first category is style shelter a had a combined style score of nine out of ten possible points shelter b got eight out of ten possible uh shelter a

One in the style category took the medal take the gold functionality shelter a scored eight and a half out of ten wow eight and a half man i didn’t know we were doing fractions here and shelter b scored eight out of ten oh agent db that’s livability and shelter b got eight

Wow wow yeah all right so so shelter a takes the cake for style and functionality and livability guess who they think all right so yes that’s a great idea you have to say which family built shelter a let’s start with uh agent db here i’m gonna guess the johnsons all right

All right all right what would you guess for shelter for shelter a which means particular reason which means that which means that we would have built shelter b obviously so you don’t have to guess who [Laughter] i’m going to say i’m going to say the opposite i think the south’s
