Hello everyone my name is pixariffs and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day we’re back here in the drip stone cave the copper is oxidizing the place is starting to look a little bit more well lit and homey and we are going to Turn our attention back to the nether because i want to discuss a couple of concepts that’s going to start us down the path of working on our nether hub a little bit and largely speaking we use the term near the hub to refer to any collection of tunnels easy paths through The nether that allow us to get from point a to point b but more historically speaking a nether hub has been a larger structure within the nether that’s sort of like a safe area and allows for easy access to a bunch of those tunnels without all the hazards of the nether so Right now i’m hopping through to the nether and pretty much immediately have to put my gold helmet on because otherwise i risk angering some of the local piglens i also then have to travel through a tunnel that’s cut in the netherrack here end up going down this cliff alongside this fairly precarious Drop into a soul sand valley the portal out to the savannah village is over there and then i can run back through the tunnel and that way in order to get to my base so getting down there involves weaving my way through this crimson forest and it’s all fairly Inconvenient once we get here i have to hop my way through the soul sand that’s not even the right spot i have to hop down into a tunnel is it over here i’m pretty sure it’s over here so as you can see in terms of navigation this entire Thing is a bit of a compromise and that’s why we probably want to create a more established network of tunnels which are safer for us to traverse and maybe a bit more direct as well right now it’s a kind of winding pathway for me to get back to spawn from our drip Stone cave base where i’ve been doing all this work there is also a pretty significant difference in height between this portal and the other portal meaning that we need to employ a system of stairs or we need to do a couple of bits and pieces to get up and down to where The portals have naturally generated as we’ve come through from the overworld to the nether this portal right here is at why 68 which is you know a few blocks above sea level in the overworld the one over there i think is at about y80 and it’s halfway up into one of the crimson Trees so our main mission today is going to be about the locations of nether portals both in the overworld and the nether how they correlate and how we can use that to our advantage because if you look at the coordinates of this portal here we’re at y65 when we step through To the nether and when we step out of the portal as we mentioned before we’re at y68 so the portals coordinates don’t necessarily match exactly to the coordinates of our portal in the overworld give or take of course dividing the x and z coordinates by eight because eight blocks in the Overworld is one block in the nether and that’s how the nether ends up being used for fast travel but if we take the actual overworld coordinates of our portal which is a 260 negative 90. if we divide those by 8 we end up with the coordinates 32.5 11.25 so if we round those to the nearest integers we’re looking at coordinates of 32 11. so why when we’ve come through to the nether for the first time has this place down near the portal at x 25 and z negative 6. if you take the coordinates exactly including the y Value which stays pretty much the same whenever you go through to the nether give or take our portal should have been right here where this diorite block is so why wasn’t it well all that has to do with what the game considers a suitable location to generate a nether portal and Usually it will give the player a bit of flat ground in order to walk out onto once you’ve entered the nether for the first time otherwise you would end up walking into something potentially dangerous the game also will not spawn a nether portal embedded in a large area Of netherrack unless it has absolutely no choice and there’s a solid area of netherrack exactly where you want to generate your portal and it will search for suitable locations within a very wide radius before it generates the portal in the first place if a portal doesn’t exist in the nether already then The game searches 16 blocks horizontally from the point of origin the place at which you would have gone into the nether if the coordinates were exact and it searches for a reasonable location it can do that vertically more or less anywhere within these coordinates but it typically favors horizontal distance so In this case it’s created a portal over here on the flat ground about five or six blocks away diagonally from where this was and when it searches for locations for these portals it’s basically drawing a series of straight lines it doesn’t take into account the geometry of blocks themselves it’s just Looking for the closest area where it can spawn a portal but if there is already a portal at the destination if for example we take down this nether portal and we rebuild it at the more exact coordinates of our portal in the overworld let’s say for example that we Carve out this section of netherrack and we build our new portal here then we run into the problem of me not having a flint and steel on me well that’s not as much of a problem as i thought because we do have a nether fortress nearby and Here are a couple of tips for you to not get stranded in the nether if your nether portal ends up getting broken first of all weather skeletons will drop coal and also with the skeleton skulls which is the first time we’ve got one of those in the series so i guess we better Pick that up and get the advancement and if you grab a bit of that coal also some blaze powder and some gunpowder from killing a ghost you’ll be able to craft a fire charge in fact three fire charges one for each item that’s consumed in the recipe and these are an alternative Method of starting a fire which will allow you to light a nether portal you can also barter fire charges from piglens piglens will trade you occasionally iron nuggets which you can craft into an iron ingot you can get some flint from some nearby gravel you can also find flint and steels in Bastions or nether fortress loot chests even the ruined portals that you find around the place it’s honestly not that much of a disaster if your nether portal goes out but when we go back through to the overworld we will find that it is connected in exactly the same place it Hasn’t recreated another portal at a different set of coordinates and this is partly because we match these coordinates exactly but it’s also because when the game links a portal from the overworld to the nether or from the nether to the overworld it searches within that radius of nearby coordinates And in the overworld it will search quite a distance basically a 257 by 257 area is searched for an existing nether portal and if the game finds one of those at basically any height in the world it will link to it but let’s say for example that i wanted To make a nether portal that linked to my storage building which is really not that far away in the overworld let’s build a portal basically in the foundation of our storage room here we’ll put it directly underneath this entrance and that way if we come through From the nether we can go straight up into the storage system or straight down into the manual storage system when we go through this nether portal the game is going to do the same check it’s going to divide the coordinates of this portal by eight search a radius in the nether For existing portals and we’re going to appear in the nearest portal which is the one that we created from the geode portal underneath our house now the problem is when we step back through this portal because it is closer to the coordinates of the geode portal we end Up coming through the geode portal and there isn’t a direct way of going back to the portal that’s over there by our storage system the solution to that is pretty straightforward we will take the coordinates of this portal as we go on through so the coordinates we got were 338 negative 116 or thereabouts right so if we divide both of those by eight we get 42.25 and negative 14.5 now we’re going to find those coordinates here in the nether which does involve a little bit of digging this way because 42 is going to be somewhere over here that’s about There and then negative 14.5 is going to be about here so the distance from our house to our storage room in the nether is about eight to ten blocks like it’s really not that far but if we create a nether portal right over here we’re gonna light That and step on through and fingers crossed this should put us out at the portal by our storage system and it does so we end up here in the hillside and if we run down into this portal again we should end up going back to the one that We’ve just created in the nether perfect we’ve done it now if we step on through this one it will take us back towards the house and stepping back through this one again will take us to the portal that we created in the first place and our portal to the storage System is right there so the trick to linking portals is really just to make sure you divide the coordinates by eight if you’re going from the over world to the nether and you multiply the coordinates by eight if you’re going from the nether to the over world and as Long as you do that as exactly as possible you’re going to turn up in the right place if for whatever reason you don’t end up in the right place especially if your two landmarks that you’re trying to make portals 2 are close enough together then match the y Height value as exactly as possible now naturally you’re not going to be able to do that with the negative coordinates in the nether or coordinates above 128 unless we break onto the nether roof which is something we may end up doing in future but it’s not possible to do That in bedrock edition so for the sake of these examples even though we’re in java edition i’m going to ignore the nether roof for now but remember when the game is searching for a portal in a certain radius it’s going to do that via the shortest possible distance between The area it wants to spawn a portal and the area that you’ve already built a portal so for example if we ended up building a portal really low down in the bottom of the overworld let’s say like in some of the deep slate layers of caves and we built that exactly an equal Distance between the portal at our storage room and the portal back at our house when searching for another portal to connect to that portal would draw two straight lines to this portal there and this portal there and it would hit this portal first because it’s lower down in Terms of height so if it’s a perfectly equal distance between these two portals in terms of the horizontal values the vertical value is what determines whether it will connect and so in cases like that if you want to connect to a very specific location it’s important to Match the y value or make some minor adjustments to the x and y values so you connect to the portal that you want to with that said as long as you don’t have too many portals in a close space together as long as you don’t have that Many portals which are only a few blocks away like these ones are you won’t typically run into issues with height and so if you’ve just got one portal that goes out to a location you can build it at more or less any height in the nether and it will still connect Correctly to the portal in the overworld we can move the portal we’ve got over there at our drip stone cave down to a height where all we have to do is run horizontally we don’t have to climb stairs navigate up through crimson forests or anything like that and so That is mostly what we’re going to be doing we’re going to start a series of more established transport connections between our portals here in the nether and we’re going to do that at roughly this height so i’m going to spend a bit of time relocating that portal and Carving out some more permanent tunnels and i think later on this week we’re going to talk about how we’re going to make those tunnels safe against intruders from the outside and the wandering trader is now visiting i might as well see what he’s got going on i don’t really need the wandering Trader all that much these days but i mean he’s he’s selling gunpowder which is almost tempting considering that i need a bit of gunpowder to make some more rockets for my elytra seeing as we don’t really have much access to gunpowder right now but anyway let’s Step on through to the nether and i’ll talk to you about what i’ve done first of all i gathered a lot of obsidian from the end i have about three and a half stacks in here right now and the reason i went to the end is because there are Pillars made out of obsidian so it’s nice and easy to go and farm it from there instead of the tedious process of finding a lava lake pouring it over getting maybe a stack of obsidian out of that and then going and finding another one or alternatively converting buckets Of lava one at a time from the lava farm in the drip stone cave it made a lot more sense to just go and mine that straight out of the pillars of obsidian that are in the end and they will actually regenerate later when we regenerate the dragons so you can Effectively farm obsidian that way if you just fight the dragon sometime in between the rest of my time has been spent making a series of tunnels that is more or less as straight as possible or at least as uncomplicated as possible to get to various locations so out here Past the portal to my storage system if we continue on down this way this leads out towards a couple of different places actually right now there are a couple of areas where there’s still now the fortress mobs visible from inside the fortress might go and pick up that blaze Rod later but this leads out into a slightly scary walkway i kind of had to bridge very very carefully bring a fire resistance potion with me and even wore my elytra as a backup but eventually once we reach the end of this and the hoglands are here to highlight the Importance of spawn proofing this eventually we end up directly over the top of a portal that takes me to the stronghold so the last thing i’m going to do here is connect this portal up and i’m going to take the shulker box very carefully so it doesn’t end up falling In lava because that would be uh pretty much a disaster at this point so this portal should now connect to the stronghold portal because as you can see from the location of this it’s not quite directly above this portal it’s actually at a more accurate set of coordinates That i’ve had to bridge out to from the area i was setting up my nether hub and we’re in as you can see teleports us straight through to the portal where the end portal is now what i’m interested in discovering is which portal it returns Us to when we step back through here and i’m gonna have to hold down the crouch button because as you can see it doesn’t take us to that portal it takes us to this one and i think the reason is because this one is closer on The y-axis this portal down here is at y 49 20 blocks lower than that one which is up there at y-68 and i’m going to step in land a little bit just in case these hoglands decide to throw me off into the lava lake but i think it’s Significant that this portal is being chosen as our return portal over that one simply because it’s lower down in the world because the stronghold is way down underneath deep slate level if we step back on through and look at the coordinates we’re at negative 18 so it makes sense that it’s finding that Portal as it chooses a return location for us but since we can’t use the negative coordinates here in the nether because there’s a bedrock floor at y 0 that goes up to about y 4 or 5 or so i decided we’re going to keep all of the portals that are you know individual Portals all the stuff that kind of sits out here on its own without any other landmarks around it we’re going to keep those all at the y68 height that we set up our original portal at and yes i have moved the original portal so it was up a Couple of blocks and having taken down that portal the portal at the stronghold should now return us to this one up here in the sky which i am definitely gonna have to spawn proof because i don’t feel like dealing with hoglands this much not to mention make the whole thing a little Bit safer since it’s now over a giant lava lake but at least we now have a nice accessible path to the stronghold i got lost twice or three times trying to find this one in the first place to try and match the coordinates more accurately so i think it’s probably Better if we know which way we’re going my previous part to the stronghold took me out this way because this was the way we set up to go towards the jungle temple that i made a portal to a while ago and yeah there are definitely a lot Of landmarks out here that have weird winding bridges going out towards them now and eventually we will set up a bunch of different options for transportation methods do we want to travel by minecarts so the whole process is hands-free and we get there just by clicking on a minecart and setting off On our way do we want to be able to fly there with the lytro which is probably one of the faster ways to travel or do we want to use boats and ice in the same way that boating down an icy river can move you at super fast speeds we can Take advantage of that mechanic here in the nether to travel long distances as long as they’re in straight lines because boats are kind of difficult to steer on diagonal pathways or around cornice one of the other major changes i’ve made is over here where we have a Path out towards the jungle and this was previously down here in this kind of ravine area and i decided to move the portal back to some more accurate coordinates then i changed the location of the portal again when we decided to move everything up to the current height Of y 67 or in this case 68 as we hop on through the portal but this should take us to the first near the portal we ever created over here in the jungle which is of course the place i’ve been gathering a lot of my obsidian before i could go To the end and stepping back on through should now take us to the portal up here instead of the portal down below which i left active for the sake of this example because you see this portal down here even though it matches the exact same x And z coordinates is offset by the y coordinate this one down here is at y 50 and the one on the surface in the jungle is around sea level or maybe a little bit higher so it’s probably around y 64 65 so it’s choosing the portal up there Because it’s a shorter distance to travel to that portal when it’s looking for one to connect to and even though this one was linked to the one in the overworld before it prioritizes the one that’s built at a more accurate set of coordinates so while our initial Pathways back to our portal of origin remain we can probably ignore those because now we have a much more straightforward route to travel last of them perhaps most importantly of all the portal out to our drip stone cave base has now been put in a slightly more accessible location we can actually get To it pretty easily and over there we can see that this path will be built on this diagonal can actually head in that direction as well and link up with that portal on the other side so these three portals are really in quite close proximity to each other the drip stone Cave however is a lot further out and i decided i could probably do a diagonal line more or less directly to where the drip stone cave portal was only as you’ll remember it generated quite high up in the nether and so i set up this it’s over the top of this Crimson forest here but it’s at a much more accurate set of coordinates compared to the one that was automatically generated when we came through from the overworld this one is still at y68 so it’s still pretty high up and should hopefully link more or less accurately to the one in the drip Stone cave which it seems to yep that’s working out just fine there we go load in the rest of the cave in the background the question remains which of these is it going to link to because we have one portal that is higher up at slightly less accurate coordinates but Probably closer on the y-axis and we have another portal that’s lower on the y-axis but closer to the exact coordinates and it looks like it’s taking us to the higher one for now simply because i think it’s slightly closer on the y-axis and the line to This portal is shorter once i take this away however we can hop back down into this tunnel the one that leads out to the savannah village and it branches off to one side where the portal to our drip stone cave is because we have multiple pathways that can lead to and from this Location hopefully now we should find that this links up to the drip stone cave portal nice and easily and that the drip stone k portal links back to the path we just traveled although once again i’m probably gonna have to decorate this area and block off the end Of that portal just so we don’t walk through it and fall down to the floor of the crimson forest below this really is the foundation of our nether hub so called because the different tunnels that branch off it are like the spokes of a wheel and its center is right here At our portal to spawn but i have one more experiment i want to try and i want to try something a little bit sneaky in between these two portals this is more of an experiment than a fully fledged part of our nether hub but i think i want to give this a try So there are nine blocks in between these two portals and in the center if we count three blocks in we can set up another three by three portal basically the exact distance between these two portals and now we’ve lit this portal i can hopefully demonstrate that one Portal can take us to two places depending on which block we’re standing on inside the frame so for example if i head through the left hand side of this because i’m closer to the left hand side of this portal over here i do end up at The geode i end up at the one directly underneath our house where the wandering trader is still on my doorstep but that’s not the only place this portal can link to because if i step into the blocks on this side of the portal the portal block that’s teleporting me is Actually closer to the storage system and so despite having just gone through to the geode at the house we go through to the portal by my storage room that is something that only really works when you’re traveling from the nether through to the overworld because of course when It’s traveling from the nether back to the overworld it’s multiplying your coordinates by eight and once it’s done that it’s searching for the closest nether portal to those coordinates which in this case happened to be the one by the storage system and on the other side Of the portal was the one by the geode you can’t really do that returning to the nether because it’s dividing the coordinates by eight and the range that it searches for the portal is much narrower when we come back through to the nether we’ll be in the portal that’s Dedicated to that storage system portal because that one has the closest matched coordinates so there’s no way we would return through this portal at any point but from both sides of this portal we can either go to one location or the other and if you wanted to you could set Up a system of portals like this that transport you to one side of your base or the other depending on where you were standing considering that the maximum size you can build a nether portal is a 23 by 23 frame so it can be 23 blocks Wide and at least three blocks tall you could have a portal in the nether 23 blocks long which would teleport you to completely different locations depending on which part of the portal you are standing at as long as all of the portals in the overworld lined up carefully along those coordinates if the Interior of this portal if the actual portal blocks were 21 blocks long then you could stand at one end teleport to the overworld then walk down to the other end teleport to the overworld and that would be 168 blocks away from the position where you first teleported to The overworld not only that but the nether portal would search for other portals in the overworld within that 128 block radius i mentioned earlier so if you add 128 blocks at either end there is a maximum range for a single nether portal to teleport you to locations 420 Or so blocks apart putting my elytra back on for a second that’s the equivalent of one side of the portal teleporting us directly here and the other side of the portal teleporting us here i can’t even see the iron farm we’re in a completely different place and all of that could be Accomplished by careful linking of nether portals which really shows how powerful a mechanic transport through the nether is and it’s something that we will hopefully get to take full advantage of in the weeks to come as we explore more of the world transport ourselves to more places and make Permanent connections to those places now i’ve got to figure out what on earth i’m going to do to decorate the place and spawn proof it to take care of the mobs that are surrounding me at all times in the crimson forest but that’s a story for another time that’s where We’re going to leave it for this episode of the minecraft survival guide and i do hope
