Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we’re going to take a look at linking Nether Portals together for the process of making a nether Hub a more organized System of tunnels that you can use to Traverse the nether to cross great distances in the Overworld and part of the reason we’re going to do that is because I want to come back to this iron farm to collect the contents quite regularly but I have built my base far Away from our spawn point where this iron farm is located it’s been fairly productive I’ve got a little bit more iron here that I want to collect plus a bunch of iron blocks here in my inventory and we need to go and gather some obsidians so we can make another Portal over here at this point the best place to gather obsidian is going to be down here further down in the world since Lava Lakes can generate anywhere below y51 I believe in the current world generation and it’s honestly going to be worth Gathering large quantities of Obsidian for this next part okay here we are negative 54 so I was close but a little weight off we’re going to turn all of this lava here into obsidian where we can there was obviously one block of flowing lava there but there is more lava below it as well so we’re Going to use that as our collection point and this time around we’re going to be creating more than one near the portal so we’re going to be collecting at least 20 obsidians the minimum you’ll need to create two portals and honestly if you want to build the corners in There you probably want to get 28. fortunately at this stage we’re the netherite pickaxe and efficiency 5 we’re harvesting obsidian pretty quickly so it’s a lot faster than creating the nether portals we started with originally oh and in the process we’re actually collecting a couple of diamonds Although I do need to make sure these don’t get destroyed by lava when I harvest them yeah there was definitely lava underneath those but I think we got that one and the rest of them are fine okay there we go nine diamonds from three that’s not bad okay I cleared out The top three layers of this Lava Lake we got it just over a stack of obsidian from that a stacking 10 that’s not gonna be too bad that should be enough for what we need it at least and of course we can always come back here if we need Some more obsidian but now we going to head back over to spawn and decide where we’re going to create our portal okay back here at our iron farm we are fairly close to the central World spawn point it’s the stone block that I marked with A torch right there and I don’t want to have the portal too close to the iron farm because remember we need to keep solid blocks outside of this area I don’t want to have it down there with the iron storage or anything so I think we’re probably going to put it maybe About here this sort of seems like the best place for it we’re going to dig out a little patch for it in the ground here we’ll take the iron as well might as well grab that we’re going to do the standard 4×5 portal frame for a 2×3 Interior for the portal like so and we’re going to light it if I have a flint and steel around here which I don’t think I do I’ve got enough iron that I can make one though so there we go we’re gonna light this portal then we Are going to step into the portal but not go through to the nether instead I’m going to open up my coordinates we’re taking a look at the X Y and Z there I’m going to take a screenshot of that so I can remember those numbers so this Portal is built at an x-coordinate of negative 77 or 78 a z coordinate of 16 and a y value of the height of 71. and now I’m going to head back to my base so that we can enter the nether through the portal over there and establish something fundamental about Nether Portals if I was to enter the nether via this portal that we’ve already created here by my starter house and then I searched the terrain of the nether for the portal that would take me through to that portal I just created at spawn then I would not find one because Minecraft Does not create a portal on the nether side until you have stepped through the portal in the Overworld so right now we don’t actually have another side portal connected to that portal we just made by our iron farm so instead what we’re going to do is create the location of That portal manually but first I need to check my coordinates here in the nether we are at negative 43 negative 24. what we need to do in order to create the ideal location for a portal that will connect to that portal we just made by our iron farm is to take the Overworld Coordinates of that portal and divide the X and the Z values by 8. our portal in the Overworld was at a negative value of 77 or 78 on the x-axis and a 16 on the z-axis so if I’m looking around here I can sort of approximately do the math In my head right 7778 is close enough to 80 so what we’re looking for is a negative x value of 10 so around here and a z value of 2 so we actually need to be further back in the Netherrack here and I think somewhere around here Give or take a block or so this way so that we can account for that rounded up number about here is the exact location where a portal would try to generate here in the nether if we step through that one in the Overworld the thing is If we step through that one in the Overworld the game would detect that this was a solid block of terrain and instead of sporting the portal inside of a wall it would look for the nearest valid location for it within a certain range so what I’m expecting is that the Portal from small owned by our iron farm would generate somewhere out here but now we’ve dug a little tunnel into the Netherrack here we can actually dig out a space where we can build the nether side portal to get back to the Overworld and I’m going to do that right here so That the coordinates while we’re standing in this portal frame are negative nine and a bit and then positive two notice that we haven’t done anything about the Y value of our portal just yet and we’ll cover that in a second but for now if I light up this Portal and step through it we should find ourselves standing right by our iron farm in the Overworld and those two portals are now linked I can step through to the nether from the iron farm and find myself at the exact portal that I set up here in the Nether and in the Most basic sense that is how you link two Nether Portals together you simply divide the Overworld coordinates by eight or multiply the nether coordinates by eight and the corresponding portal in the other dimension will link to the one that you’ve just created now on the rare occasion where you Cannot rely on coordinates to create a nether portal then you just have to make do with the approximate location the nether portal is going to spit you out when you make it in the nether or in the Overworld but you may have occasionally come across a situation in which you Create another portal in the Nether and the one on the Overworld side spits you out in a cave or some kind of inconvenient location where you can’t just go over the surface to get back to your base that is where making more exact Nether Portals comes in really Handy and the other place I want to build a portal today is actually over here by our skeleton spawner which right now in order to get to it to farm experience and mend my tools and everything I have to go down this really long ladder or I can just fall into the Water source I placed down there but it takes a while to climb back up the ladder as well what I would like to do is create a fast travel point to this area by knocking a hole in this wall and putting a nether portal somewhere in Here since this one’s going to be stuck in the wall for now I’m not going to worry too much about keeping the corners so we’ll just make this one out of 10 pieces of obsidian we can light that and take the coordinates once again then We’ll use my portal here at spawn to get back through to the Nether and we’ll try to find the relative coordinates of the skeleton spawner portal it’s actually really close by I need to dig this way maybe 12 or 13 blocks but then the relative coordinates of that portal here In the nether are at negative 23 and positive one or two it’s actually in a really close line to our iron farm and oh I was not expecting to find ancient debris out here but I’ll take it that’s a little vein of ancient debris what a win anyway the distance between our Portal over there and our portal over here is relatively short it’s only about 12 or 13 blocks so we’re gonna build our portal here and we’re gonna see what happens because when we light up this portal and step through it my hunch is that we’re not going to end up at the Skeleton spawner at all nope instead we end up back at our portal here at sport and if I step through this portal to the one in the nether we’re not going to end up back at the portal I just stepped through we’re going to end up back at The portal we originally set with the coordinates of the one at spawns so right now I have two Nether Portals that actually lead to the same place on the surface in the Overworld and this is where we need to talk about how Minecraft searches for a location for a Valid nether portal whether it’s connecting to an existing nether portal or creating a new one it does that by basically drawing a straight line in a bunch of different directions in the Nether and searches within that radius for a nether portal to connect to the game will always connect to the portal That is the shortest distance away in a straight line from the relative coordinates remember in the nether you divide the coordinates by eight of the portal that you just traveled through but if we created this portal here with the exact x and z coordinates we needed and we created the portal in the Skeleton spawner at the exact x and z coordinates as well why is this portal connected to both of the portals in the nether that’ll comes down to the Y value if you remember our portal down here at the skeleton spawner is created really low down in the world it’s at negative 51 in the world so when it draws a line from the Portal’s coordinates in the nether to this one in the Overworld in an attempt to find it it’s connecting to that portal over its spawn because it is closer on the y-axis to this portal the Fact that this portal is so low down in the world means that it isn’t the first portal the game finds when trying to draw a straight line from those coordinates in fact if we build another portal at the exact coordinate of our portal down below let’s say we build it Here but we build it on the surface so the y-axis value is closer to the portal that we’ve built in the nether once we like this and walk through it we’ll find that we end up at the portal that was intended for our skeleton spawner here In the Nether and when we walk back through it from the nether side we should find ourselves on the surface by the access ladder that we built to our skeleton spawner so as we can see we’ve now linked those two portals correctly it’s the height of the portal in the World that’s the problem so what we need to do is go back through to the Nether and make sure that the Y value of the portal that we built in the nether the height of the portal in the nether is closer to this one in the Overworld that Way when the portal in the nether searches in that straight line for a portal to connect to the one below us is going to be closer the biggest problem we Face here is that at negative 51 that is really really far down in the cave layers of the Overworld and the nether Doesn’t have those cave layers the nether bottoms out at Bedrock level around y four three or two so we’re not going to be able to build this at the exact y height that we can find the portal in the Overworld instead we just have to make do with getting it as close As reasonably Possible having taken the coordinates of this portal just so I don’t have to do the maths again we’re going to break this portal and we’re going to relocate it lower down in the nether Terrain here we’re not going to go all the way to lava level if we can Help it but I am going to staircase down through the near the terrain about as far as I can go from the surface up here until we hit the x and z coordinates where our first portal was built and that’s about here we’re at about why 65 now instead of why 87 where we were before so I’m gonna try building the portal here again this is more of like a trial and error method rather than relying on exact mathematics so let’s select the portal here and let’s go through again and see if we end up at Spawn or our spawner and this time it seems like we have ended up at the spawner so even decreasing the height of the portal by about 20 blocks has made all the difference here as I pass back through this portal I should end up at the Location of our new portal here at the bottom of this Netherrack staircase and I’ll go through a couple more times just to make sure it’s linked up successfully ah now we have a problem now we have a really interesting problem actually because that time I ended up coming Through the portal to spawn and that’s where some of this Netherrack has come through as well so here is my question does that depend on how far through the portal we are if I stand on the very edge of this block I do end up at the Skeleton spawner but if I stand further back in the portal if my actual x coordinate is closer to the portal at spawn yeah I end up going through to spawn that is very interesting so basically this portal here is built at the exact point where standing a tiny Fraction of a block to one side or the other makes the difference about where the portal connects it can connect to spawn if your coordinates when you step through are further towards zero on the x-axis and it will connect to the skeleton spawner portal if they are closer towards higher numbers on the X-axis in the right circumstances that could prove to be a fairly useful way of setting up these portals but in this case it seems like more of an inconvenience I really don’t want a situation where I have to be careful which side of the portal I step in order To reach my skeleton spawner so what we’re going to do is dig out this staircase by one additional block and we’re simply going to move this portal one block further forward so that we are always standing closer on the x-axis to the skeleton spawner let’s try it this Time if we step all the way through this portal and stand on this side of the block we are still going to go through to our skeleton spawner okay and that portal is now going to link up successfully so we haven’t exactly matched the y coordinate as you can see We’re of course not going to be able to do that in the nether but even so we’re still above y64 but it is possible for us to get through to the skeleton spawner consistently regardless of where we stand in this portal so a lot of the time you’ll find players trying to Create a nether Hub trying to create a network of tunnels through which you can navigate the nether to different locations in the Overworld it’s a really useful thing to have at once your world has broadened a little a bit once you want to travel to different biomes to Access different things when you have bases or resources in multiple places or on multiplayer servers where different people’s bases want to be linked by a system of tunnels and if your portals are spread out far enough let’s say for example here in the Overworld we want to Make a portal to a neighboring biome maybe across the way maybe the Savannah Village that we’ve already been to and already had another portal app for a little while it would be possible to create another portal to both locations on the same y-axis value in the Nether And so you could create a straight tunnel just a simple walking path along a flat plane from one to the other but in the cases of portals like the one at spawn and our skeleton spawner where they are at really different y Heights but relatively close together horizontally it does require a little Bit more thought trial and error or mathematics in order to make sure that those portals link to those two places consistently simply because they are close enough together that the game is going to look for a closer portal than the one we we’ve already built and so For practical purposes while it would be great to have another Hub where you simply walk on the same floor all the way to all of your different tunnels and different portals sometimes practically speaking it’s not always going to be that simple so to summarize our best practices for creating linked portals Between the Nether and the Overworld are to divide the Overworld coordinates by eight to get the coordinates of the portal to build in the nether or multiply the nether coordinates by 8 to get the coordinates of the portal to build in the Overworld and wherever possible match the Y value as closely as You can and if that’s not possible make sure that the height of the portal is such that it is mathematically closer to the destination portal than any other portal you built in the nether oh that was a lot of maths but hopefully you folks enjoyed this look at how to link Portals and we’re going to be using this technique a lot in the creation of different links to different places in the world we are going to establish a nether Hub structure in the nether which will make it safer to travel between these portals but today we’ve laid the Foundations for making sure that those portals will link up successfully and that’s the most important thing to know as we continue to explore the Overworld and Traverse the nether but folks that’s where we’re going to leave it for this episode of the Minecraft Survival Guide thank you so much for watching it’s been A bit of a shorter one but I hope you have enjoyed it don’t forget to leave a like on the video If
