When i make my videos i often check the youtube comments and the messages i get on discord for suggestions as to what i should be doing next and one of the most frequent suggestions i get is terraforming so i thought now is as good as a time as Any to give this a go welcoming everybody i’m meryl 3 and today i’m going to hopefully shed a little bit of light on how to do some pretty decent terraforming in creative mode or survival mode and i’ll be going over the different stages of terraformation that you can do What tools you’re going to need to do it and hopefully give you a little bit of help in how to minimize the grind and with that all safely out the way let’s jump right into it now the very first step for terraforming is always going to be to make an area That you can terraform on and that’s going to involve clearing out the whole area that you want to work on now in creative mode all that means is getting rid of all the leaves all of the bark all the grass all of that kind of thing from the area that You’re gonna want to have cleared out and well workable land but in survival mode you also want to be gathering those resources back up so you can use them later in different projects after all if you don’t have infinite materials like you do in creative mode it’s a good idea to stockpile them The next step is to use those resources you just gained from clearing out the terrain to fill in any blemishes that might have been in it so that’s stuff like caves random water lakes that you get sometimes just beneath the surface etc etc and generally the more Thoroughly you do this stage the easier the rest of them are gonna be after all if you don’t have caves to worry about falling into everything else is to be a breeze or relatively a breeze some people might consider this to be terraforming but i consider it to just Be the clearing stage still as really all you’re doing is making some space to build whatever you want in like a house some villagers or an enchanting table so if all you’re doing right now is terraforming for a survival build this might only be the step that you want to Go to and that’s perfectly fine however if you want to take things further either in survival or creative mode you’re going to need some more advanced tools than this in survival mode you’re gonna want to have fully enchanted tools otherwise it’s just gonna be too grindy But in creative mode you have the joy of command block so that’s gonna help out a lot here i’ve included a few basic commands in the description that will help you out with command blocks even if you don’t know a whole lot about them as we can always go over in more detail In another video but moving on to terraforming here you can see exactly what the smoothing stage is all about now this is less about removing the blemishes in the terrain and instead about completely reshaping it a lot of the terrain in minecraft is very very blocky and you don’t really find right angles In nature so what we’re gonna do here is we’re gonna go over it with long curves like this it’ll make the world look a little bit more like the lines on an os map than well random noise which is literally how the world generates but i recommend going around and Smoothing the world layer by layer going from the top to the bottom and smoothing out the terrain in circles that just get bigger and bigger as you go lower and that technique kind of works with any gradient that you’re working with whether that’s in mountain like terrain Or coming up to a lake or just on those rolling hills i was working on there that kind of top to bottom making circles that gradually expand out does generally work for most situations except maybe for cliffs but we go over that later in the video so stay tuned Coming straight back to lakes though you can see we’re just gonna add a little sandy area around the edge of it and you could choose gravel as well if you wanted a little stone beach but i chose sand i just felt it looked a lot nicer also consider deepening out the lake and Using some different materials other than coal in the bottom of it but i’ll do that later on in the video you can see in the background i’m going over the edges of the mountain with a gradual incline rather than the random noise i was talking about earlier Which again just follows that theme of smoothing out the terrain when you do eventually get round to deepening out your lake make sure you have plenty of sand or gravel or stone ready to deepen it out and fill in the extra material and now finally onto the meat of the Video the actual terraforming now rather than cleaning up or pruning or just doing general tweaks to terrain this part is gonna be actually creating new terrain from scratch and here you can see i’ve wasted absolutely no time just immediately creating a little cliff face here starting with a single line of blocks And gradually dropping down the cliff face in a natural looking way finishing off by lining the top of it with grass to make it look a little bit more natural and fit in a little bit better with the surroundings you can even layer these cliff faces you can see here i’m actually starting Another one just behind and on top of the uh cliff faces that we’ve already built and you can see there the whole process where i’ve made a little line drop down a cliff face from it eroded it backwards and then filled it in to make it look nice and natural After you’ve made some custom terrain that you’re quite comfortable with consider making some decorations like a little river that runs from the top of the mountain down to the lake that we’ve created here or other major geological structures like boulders that might have fallen off the cliff face And i’m going to put a few down here just as an example now remember when you’re making these you want to actually have them look not like monoliths but instead like they’ve been eroded over time so make sure you dot a little bit of uh scree around the base of it Now that you’ve created your terrain you’ll want to start decorating it and we’re going to be handling each one of these decorations a little bit different for the smooth rolling fields that we’ve created we’re going to have a few paths going in and out of the hills going to different areas along the Terrain that you can decorate up with podzol some coarse dirt or different things originally i thought a tall custom tree might be nice here but i eventually decided against it after all it’s a terraforming video not a custom trees one we’ll get to them soon so i opted instead for some bushes Around the place and as we pan over to lake you can see we’ve got a couple of decorations here like the reeds and such and although it’s hard to see in the video we’ve actually decorated the cliff face with different shades of stone like andesite which gives a nice texture To the cliff face overall finally bone meal up your grass because that looks nice and natural and you can step back and admire your Work if you found the video useful consider leaving a like and subscribing as it does help the channel grow i take requests in the youtube comments and on my I get a TON of requests to do Terraforming in my comments and on my discord, so I thought now is as good a time as any to go into a little video about it! Kept it nice and small so you can follow along in survival mode, makes sure the grind isn’t too bad!
Helpful commands for terraforming: /execute as @p at @s run fill ~5 ~5 ~5 ~-5 ~-5 ~-5 ~-5 air replace oak_leaves Replace “oak_leaves” in the above with whatever block you want to remove, paste the command into a command block, set it to repeat, and you’re good to go!
