Today I’ll be making my own version of Minecraft as a 2d dungeon crawling roguelike with a pretty interesting twist whoa the plan is to make four dungeons with some hidden 3D Mechanics for players to go through and a cool final boss at the end since this is supposed to be a Roguelike they will probably be dying a few times oh but that’s intended in most cases this is pissing me off let’s start off by making a Sprite for Steve I decided to go with my good old chibi pixely style and manage to make a pretty cute little man since this game was Going to be mainly two-dimensional I had to make animations for him so I moved on to draw some pixel art animations for when he walks down up left and right and I made sure to give him that uh huge dumpy that is a classic at this point Then I picked up a grass block model I had used for the last game to start making a test level for a little Steve to walk around in and there was a bit of an issue there which I ended up fixing by making Steve into a billboard Sprite Which is just a 2d drawing that always looks straight up relative to the camera once that was fixed the entire game world just decided to turn like 30 degrees to the left so uh yeah oh we got a problem on our hands while working on A fix for my camera issue I found out I could use the camera itself to tilt the entire game world and my brain started scheming some evil machinations what if there was no actual door to exit the level and instead I hit the real exit in 3D and you could only see it by tilting the camera I go into 3D I see the path I walk so that I also told why don’t I make the game into a 2.5 D hellscape where the game looks either 2D or 3D based on where the camera is positioned Using optical illusions to trick the player’s brain into thinking that’s 2D oh this is gonna be sick are we revolutionizing the game industry right here I’d like to think so wait this is so cool okay that was epic it also looked particularly trippy and mind-bending because I decided to use an Orthogonal camera or or or which means that differently from The Real World things don’t get smaller as they get further away from you everything stays the exact same size on the screen at all times this was only the start of my descent into madness for Day one I was supposed to just assign a cute little first level but instead I created an insane game mechanic that would become the focal point of the entire rest of the project I I don’t know what the hell is wrong with me now you may be asking to you what is that What the hell is this software you’ve been using this is RPG in a box and this time around they’ve been kind enough to sponsor this video and I couldn’t be happier because this thing has been a godsend so far RPG in a box is a game making software that is super easy to Use whether you’re a beginner or an experienced developer because you don’t need to know any coding they’ve got a voxel editor which lets you design and animate your models without breaking a sweat they’ve got the grid based map editor which lets you build worlds link Maps together and you’re done the Coolest part is the script editor where you can use drag and drop visual notes that even a toddler could understand there’s the dialogue editor for creating branching conversations and scripted scenes the UI editor which lets you craft custom UI components for your game the effects editor for making particle Effects this one for example I like to call a poop explosion underscore one despite the name RPG in a box also allows you to make other genres like puzzle games exploration horror Adventure or even FPS or platforming games have become impossible now with free movement I also got a little Insider information apparently Blockbench support is in the works honestly before using RPG in a box I had no idea how game development even remotely worked go get RPG in a box right now on Steam through the link in the description and thank you again to RPG in the Box for not only sponsoring This video but also for kickstarting my way into game development you guys are really cool with that said let’s go on to day two I started day two with uh bread knowing I’d have to make the entire level I had put off making the day before I got rid Of the test map I had used for some reason all my assets had turned into gravestones then I started to expand this default map that came with RPG in a box so it would perfectly fit in a 1080p screen I decided my old grass model looked like a crop so I made it Completely flat and changed the overall texture completely I pasted that into the level and it was an absolute flash Bank on the eyes then I made some tiles to use as borders and walls so basically I made what is essentially the side of a dirt block and placed it all around the Map it looked absolutely atrocious nevertheless I continued my Rampage through making this level and started making some shaded grass styles to indicate there actually was a wall and it still looked like crap I decided to play some dirt blocks at the top to try to salvage things but I was losing hope It just looked way too flat just like your uh my next solution was to make an inverted version of the grass and dirt block and place that on the sides while also making the middle of the level darker so it looked like it’s lower down and in some same way it actually worked I finally had something to start with so I started making the building blocks for Steve’s starting house I made a tile for wood one for Oak planks one for some stairs that would be on the roof and started placing all of that into my abomination of a map somehow some Progress was made I worked a bit more on the wood textures and made a spruce door to add in the front and it was actually looking pretty sweet I didn’t really like the bottom of the map though so I got rid of the blocks I put there and Instead made a little fan style to cover up that area look at that I then tested the Tilt functionally in the game and it was actually looking pretty cool Steve’s Billboard’s price stayed super consistent through it and that was actually really happy with it I called The first screen done and moved on to the second room I worked on a cobblestone texture to use and started to place it in the map to make a 2d entrance to the first dungeon a temple then I connected the two maps with a quick script and everything worked okay I decided the temple needed a bit more shadows and for some reason instead of just making different tiles for each light level I decided to just make a few semi-transparent black tiles that I could overlap lie on top of any tile to make it darker which might seem like a Good idea in theory but it ended up being absolutely useless because it completely screwed up how the player would interact with the titles under him Just Pretend This Never Happened okay while doing this I also decided to ditch the little inverted grass blocks since the distinction between the floor and Wall was now done with actual Shadows I didn’t have to use those for the moment though it looked alright and now for the interesting part I went to the temple itself to only be accessible by tilting the camera in 3D so I started to build a 3D Temple under the tiles I had placed to make the optical illusion I wanted I placed some doors on top which don’t matter at all and are basically just a decoy and it looked absolutely amazing wow oh holy sh the shift between 2D and 3D looked incredible and mind-banding whoa I was incredibly happy I had gotten this insane idea the day before okay that was epic whoa wait that’s really neat I started day three by making the first level of the temple dungeon I used the other Maps as a base and just turned everything into Cobblestone which looked Kind of terrible right now this doesn’t look 3D at all problem is the Cobblestone looks very samey to switch it up a little I made a stone bricks model and used that for the walls instead it was it was acceptable I guess of the room I made a couple of white Translucent textures that looked like light coming from the outside so if you go down here you get out the camera however was always unlocked which I did not want so I made the game start out flat with no option to tilt your view and then add a little spark outside the Tempo which would unlock the camera and reveal the perspective trick I then placed a couple of doors that you can only see in 3d which would be the exit to the next dungeon and the pass to the right into another room of the temple there it is The area felt a little empty though so I started to work on the first enemies starting off from Steve’s model I made some zombies and placed them around the area and he’s not gonna have a dumpy because he’s not Steve Steve’s the only one who can have a dumpy sorry about That but I then instructed them to attack Steve and it worked pretty okay the combat was a little lackluster at this point but uh we’ll figure that out later at this point I moved on to the second room I wanted to have a big gap in the Middle where a bridge would Appear so I model the 3D lever placed it at the top left of the map and gave it a little sound when you use it then I add the little Stone Bridge made into a group and made it so the lever would show the group that got pressed and Valid sound effect okay you I then moved right onto the third and last room I placed the chest at the top for some treasure or something and hit it so it would only be visible in 3D I also added another level on the right which would Unlock the camera allow you to tilt it so you could actually see things in three dimensions now we can get the chest here and if we go back oh oh God to reset the entire game that’s fine what the what the hell oh no they rounded him up he’s been what the f Uck how do I make this make sense I will figure it out in a second I’m gonna go take a after a quick break I went back to the room once the player would be in 3D Space by activating level in the last room they’d be able to see the extra Room on the left here oh I’ve spotted it I added a couple of fountains to the sides and then made a button model and placed it in the middle this would make the doors in the middle open up and the player will be able to move into the next level to add some Variety I started from the zombie model and made a little creeper guy added animations for all his walks made him a little sturdier and placed a few copies around the temple I’ll spamming this button oh you’ve been annihilated dude at this point I felt like the combat was A little you know bad so heeding the advice of my editor Fred I decided to make the player be able to attack from two blocks away while the mobs always had a range of one this way the positioning will always have to be really strategic and those who you could Avoid taking damage in most cases if you played it off well enough I think they added actually quite a bit of depth to the combat pretty nice to close out day 3 I either run through of the whole thing again interact with the spark get in a Tempo everything should work now okay Done Bridge appears okay I really like the two block idea very good idea Fred now I can attack this guy on sick everything turns 3D and now we can go this way I believe yes now we press the button we go back into this room there’s no doors anymore we can go through Holy sh that works yes this was the hardest part of the whole project because these are gonna be the mechanics that we’re gonna be using for the whole thing my plan was to make three more dungeons the player would go through each of them would have the exit To the next one in the first room so if the player died they could get back to where they were really fast oh we’re already back I’m already freaking minutes it’s all made so you can just go straight up and I appreciate that tweet then there would always be a room with a Device that would unlock the 3D camera which would allow the player to see a hidden mechanism back in their main room to continue I kept this strategy in mind and moved on to the next day for day 4 I wanted to make a desert temple dungeon so I started out by Working on some sand tiles and I landed on this wavy cartoon pattern I also made some blocks after that for the walls and some 2D Cactus styles to drop on the ground I used cobblestones a base and made a couple of variations of sandstone blocks and styles and then I got to Building the actual pyramid just like the temple I made it so that in 2D there would apparently be no entrance but in 3D you could see the way through now for the interior I made walls and floor out of sandstone and decided to also add in some sand pads that the player couldn’t Walk through to add some variety I added some creepers and the doors that would lead to the next stage this time under the wall block so they would be completely invisible in 2D I didn’t waste any time and immediately moved on to the second room to the left I added Some more sandpits and the lever that would activate some kind of a bridge before working on the Mechanics for the room I started to work on some new enemies to add in some 2D little scally boys starting from the zombie again I remodeled each frame so that it would Look right after placing the skeleton in I decided I wanted there to be some obstacle that he could push in the room so starting from the spruce door I worked on a barrel but you could move around and place it where it would be the most annoying for the player I did a Few tries for making a bridge system to walk across the sand and with a quick run through everything seemed to be working nicely at this point I began work on the last room where you’d find the button to become 3D once again I split the room into three parts with Some sand and made it so you have to activate the lever on the left to make the bridge appear on the right but I wasn’t satisfied with just having a lever to turn the world 3D I wanted something uh cooler so I grabbed my old and Crystal model that I made turned it Light blue and removed the Bedrock from underneath to create a really cool floating orb reusing assets everywhere possible check I replaced the lever everywhere with the new and improved orb and also placed it behind the skeleton in the pyramid level here well great now I’m trapped Okay okay hold on we have Panic buttons for this one so don’t worry whatever you do Tommy was worse than you at this every everything seemed pretty okay with the pyramids so now it was time to work on the secret area in the first room I decided to make The area slightly lower and to make it reachable by an elevator which would only activate once you were in three dimensions I placed some water fountains again the button in the middle and threw a couple of skeletons down the elevator itself was a bit of a pain to make but Eventually I got it done as well oh my God this is so sick oh I did a few runs at the end to check for all the bugs rather than today okay and the game was um okay what the bro I guess it was sort of playable uh which Is good enough for me I started day five with good intentions okay it just didn’t go as planned the first thing I did was convert an oak planks block to a dark oak which I’d use to make the next dungeon the Woodland Mansion I made the dark oak block tiles A lighter version for shading and stairs for the rooftop I stripped the desert map of everything to start over and initiated the Mansion construction operation I made everything out of grass and dirt and gave it some shading and started building the 3D entrance over which had overlay my 2D optical illusion I used a glass style to make Windows both in 3D and in 2D and damn it looks pretty dumb since this was supposed to be a forest I started placing some wood and made a quick Leaf texture to go along with it place down some Shadows to Make everything look right and it was basically done I didn’t want the 3D orb to be as obvious here so I raised one of the trees off the ground and hid it underneath I finished placing down all the pathways for the player to walk on And it was a looking sick now it was time to go inside the Mansion I started building a first room with dark oak on the walls and Birch on the floor just like in regular Minecraft I then started working on a red carpet block which gave Me a good amount of trouble but in the end I somehow managed to make this Abomination look decent as a carpet I thought it was netherite okay you know what with the first room mostly done I started working on the enemies for this one pillagers okay Starts Now from Steve Oh No I gave them the huge noses that they’re famous for some really angry eyebrows and a tiny bit of armor by placing just a few different pixels around the room was kinda empty though so I added the void in some areas and made some edge blocks to make the wood Look Jagged and broken I tried to make it look like he could see the floor underneath through the holes but it didn’t really look right so in the end I ended up using the water texture to make um some green sludge yeah oh my God I Called it poop water tile oh yeah dude oh yeah that is absolutely foul I don’t wish to stand in those sludge I don’t mess with the sludge this place low-key grimy clean your room alright I’m really tired but since I started I need to finish the Mansion at this point the Project was getting to me I’m so lost I feel like Joe Biden feels every day I think I’m just a lost old man I was tired exhausted even I collapsed on the floor and moved on into the Afterlife at the start of day six I managed to get My soul back into my body and immediately got back to work for the first time I hadn’t finished a dungeon in a day and I could not let that slide I decided I’d finish the mansion and make the entirety of the next dungeon in a single day I picked up where I left And started making the room to the left the Mansion would actually have two ways you could go this time I placed down some pillagers some sludge with the 3D orb right there did a bit of the same thing for the room on the right and I Also wanted to add some new mechanic to this dungeon so I started building an elevated platform to the right and I made a ladder which would only be visible in 3D as a way to go to the next dungeon everything was working okay but then I realized I was dumb because the Main rule was that the exit was always supposed to be in the first room so I tore down the whole ladder and started building it in the central room instead lattice climb see I then played some sludge in front of the ladder with a bridge the player Would have to activate this way you can only activate the bridge by going in the room and right by pressing this lever and you can only climb the stairs by going in the room to the left to actually see them in 3D and with that the Mansion was simple but finally done Now it was time to move on to the next and final dungeon the peglin Bastion to start off I decided to make some sort of a backyard Dimension where the pillagers had built another portal oh my God it’s time to get to the nether I used my old Obsidian and portal textures made them flat and then melted so that the 2D version contained a portal that looked unlit and the 3D portal was lit it’s already lit okay you know what else is lit clicking that subscribe button no but for real if you ever wanna see me Around again in the YouTube recommendation hellscape the best way is to subscribe it also helps me out a lot by filling the void within my soul with a full sense of growth by seeing number go up so I really appreciate it okay so we need new blocks but I also need to go Take a hit so I’m gonna be right back boys with that done too I started working in a new area the Bastion there’s no strategy to games like this man it’s killer be killed I darken the Cobblestone texture to turn into Blackstone and did the same with the Stone bricks I then turned those into blocks as well and made a quick lava tile to use as an obstacle with all of the components ready I started work on one of the last enemies I would add the piglets no no no no no no no no no no I Started with a sort of a bold man gave them those pinpoint eyes iced out some ears and the pagans were ready to roll in the second room I added some lava on the floor and arguably the most annoying pattern to navigate possible and put the 3D orb at the end there with a couple of paglings blocking the way this would be the only actual mandatory room for the dungeon the third room was essentially just an Easter egg it would be the capybara containment facility oh dog I immediately got to work on what is Essentially a staple of the series now I started making a little 2D capybara guy which I’ll be honest looked absolutely foul at the start this thing looked like the weirdest bipedal dog but I eventually somehow managed to make it work I did a little walk cycle and Called it a day I added some guards to the room a little lava pit and placed the little guy in prison so the player could find him and free him optionally of course I freed the khakibara as usual I got back to the main room this time I Worked on an elevator that would go upwards leading into a room with some lava flowing down the signs and the usual button on the middle the game was finally almost ready oh these doors are going to open now what it’s really funny saying you’re trying to figure this out don’t don’t love me Laughing at least I’m laughing at me I’m a gamer it was day seven time to work on the final boss in my last game the final boss was the Ender Dragon so this time I decided the piglens had engaged in some sort of dark ritual and summoned the Wither S for the fight which would happen entirely in 3D I made a huge room where I could easily fit the big model I was about to make I experimented with a 3D model first to see if it would fit but I ended up deciding against it since I Didn’t really fit the art style I had in mind I decided to flatten my man give him the heads he has the weird little bones sticking out and after a few experiments I ended up with something that looked really cool also it wasn’t skewed like the actual Minecraft wither Which is one pixel off who made this I made him a 2×2 in size threw him in the middle of the map and then started making some lava trenches along the corners for the fight I use a method similar to Minecraft’s Ender Dragon to get most of his health down you’ll have To interact with four things and the corners of the map and then you could finish him off by hand I placed some bridges above the lava pits and four levers one at Each corner that would all damage him when you use them I then placed some doors on the other side of The room which would open once the big guy was defeated and I also realized that if the Wither followed the player into some time Corners they could both get stuck so I decided to limit the weather movement to the Middle with a sort of a sold Circle but made out of Blood Redstone you know so I made that whole area in a group and made it so the weather could only move in that group what’s the final boss done it was time to finish everything off with the final room that would act as a sort of an epilogue I wanted to remake Steve’s House in 3D now that he had discovered the secrets of three-dimensionality he could finally get some well-deserved rust the game was already completed it just needed a few small additions to spice it up a little the first thing I wanted to add was a little attack Animation for Steve I gave him an iron sword which would appear momentarily whenever he attacked an enemy in every direction either moved on to making some villagers to add some actual intelligent life to the world so to speak I mean at least Jerry believes in you your garage Is blocking my ass right now these guys would have some dialogues to make things a little more interesting oh don’t tell me don’t oh what aside from that they looked pretty nice they are cubes these guys are the squattest creatures they’re like blocks of cement I scattered a Couple of these guys in the early levels outside dungeons along with some decorative barrels I also made some flowers to place on the ground in grassy areas which Honestly made everything look much better then I made the final 3D house map and almost exact replica of The first map and place the capybara at the end which would appear only if he was saved in the Bastion I decided that the two villagers at the start would be named Frank and Grant and gave them some dialogue I also added a third guy near The dungeon Jerry you may know him from my last two videos also you may remember how bad the temple level looked completely empty so I went back to it with the new techniques I had learned and added some water pits around the place to make it look flooded I also Ended up never using the chest in the last room here so I just swapped it with a water fountain which made water flow all around the room and after a lot more fixing of bugs and errors the game was done seven day days it was finally time To call a couple of friends in to try this damn thing out okay there’s one thing you know about me I’m a gamer all right that is you try and throw challenges in my way I I calculate them I calculate them I go inside the brain Why does he put this there why has he done that and I calculate precisely well okay is this me hello oh whoa wait this is so cool hello Steve I feel like life has been a little flat lately well there’s anything to do about it though hello Steve I’m still trying to figure Out how to open these doors to the temple uh you’re saying a lot of words at me I assume thing orb okay or must do something with orb how howlo try and hold the right click and move your mouse around whoa wow oh okay that was epic wait that’s really neat Ow where am I okay so now be careful here so yeah so if you stand still they’re not gonna move so you can take your time here okay so hold on so yeah Kill Them All let’s go oh my God there’s so many all right we’re gonna get to this lever die You got claps dude oh there we go what what oh try to stand still get me out of here doors okay so don’t focus on the doors there’s more stuff I’ve spotted it I’ve spamming this button oh you’ve been inoculated this oh I don’t I’m these guys are gonna Freaking kill my ass I think I think they might I’m dead I’m not talking to these guys again they’re pissing me are so damn smart away fight it can I walk into these Cactus is this gonna hurt me well it’s not even really there so no no please well great now I’m trapped Okay okay hold on we have Panic buttons so don’t worry whatever you do I’m spinning I’m spinning Tommy was worse okay we need to get to that thing mate piss off oh I hate puzzles Korean game for you I’m so glad yeah yeah it’s pissing me right off Oh whoa consider yourself finesse you know the thing is is I’m the best yeah you’re not you’re just so so good help me wait this is actually so hype there it is doors are open you’re halfway through now wait this is only halfway yeah I wanna I wanna see you I’ll try Try to figure that out there it is that was quick do you know about your game oh bad just Place Loki grimy clean your room I am a good gamer don’t listen to No One I underestimated you I’m sorry I’m sorry everyone does everyone does in every Department oh That’s really sad wait so you’re saying I can hit from two blocks away can I yeah you could have been doing that with the whole time but I’m it’s great that there’s a learning am I gonna get up there without him getting me I think you are a proper screw like it This is pissing me off what is he doing he’s actually ow no oh we’re already back I’m already freaking back I put the exits all in the first level so you just do this and you’re back there and I appreciate that tweet all right I can charge these guys Now I’ve got enough Health got my revenge on his ass come in I’m from [ __ ] Nottingham I’m gonna get my way are you [ __ ] sorry sorry I I you have to see the side of me my my British is coming out my British you Channel your roadman energy I did I Did ladders wow oh my God it’s time to get to the nether it’s already lit okay there’s no strategy to games like this man it’s kill or be killed without dying nah I can assure you there would have been some way nah I’m sorry I know this Is the Mario texture is it is it this is stolen from Mario great you’re a thief I mean they they stole Mario from the Italians so it was my right how have you how do you get yourself in this situation so often awful say man what do you want growl Grant oh don’t I coded an entire Roguelike inspired by Minecraft, and had Tommy and Tubbo play it! I managed to make the overworld, the Jungle Temple, the Desert Pyramid, the Woodland Mansion, and the Piglin Bastion, as well as a final Wither Boss! I had Tommy and Tubbo play the whole thing and it was a lot of fun!
