Hello everyone my name is Pixar riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we are going to take an introductory look at enchanting but first there is a lot of stuff we need to prepare we need to take A quick trip back to the cave but before we do that I need to cook some more food so I figured now would be a good time to introduce the recipe for a smoker take a furnace surround it with logs and you’ll get a smoker which can cook food twice As fast as a regular furnace the downside is that you cannot cook anything other than food in a smoker there is a similar variant to the furnace that is just for smelting raw iron copper and gold and that’s the blast furnace but we’re going to make One of those another time for now we’re going to grab some water and head back to that cave because fairly close to the surface in the cave we spotted this reasonable sized lake of lava we’re going to pour water all over this lava which will convert it from lava into Obsidian then we’re going to dig down a couple of blocks just to make sure that there isn’t any lava below this top layer of obsidian and we are going to start mining it now remember obsidian is one of those blocks I said could only be obtained if you have a diamond pickaxe And without a diamond pickaxe it takes a very long time to break the block and it does not drop a block of obsidian you just spend four minutes punching it and then it disappears Into Thin Air but we get the ice bucket challenge advancement for collecting a block of obsidian and We will need four of these to make our first enchanting table you’ll also notice that as we’ve removed this top layer of obsidian there is a layer of lava below and we want to be careful about any items dropping into that because that hissing sound indicates They are gone for good so I’ll teach you a safe method of mining for obsidian dig a hole nearby place a bucket of water in there and start mining the obsidian from there as you mine the blocks of obsidian the water will begin to flow forward so You might have to fight the flow of water a little bit there but as we approach this little section of lava over here when I break the block the water is going to flow forward and we’ll convert all of the neighboring lava blocks into obsidian we only need four Obsidian to craft an enchanting table but we’re going to bring back 18 for reasons that will become clear in a future episode now leaving the cave behind we’re going to go looking for something else and I see a little bit on the horizon past this skeleton who I’ll Probably kill think of this as revenge for the last episode and there’s even some closer to home here this is sugarcane you might have gathered some already in your world if you’ve spotted this by the side of a river or an ocean somewhere we’re gonna punch these and The plants above will break we’re going to leave one block of each planted here so that it can regrow naturally on its own sugarcane has to be grown next to water so you’ll often find it growing next to water when it naturally generates in the world look for it in Rivers swamps near oceans on beaches that kind of thing planted on a block and it will take some time but sugar cane will naturally grow to three blocks high the naturally generated one here is four blocks high which is actually something of a rarity but I see another Four block High one on the opposite Shore so they’re honestly not that rare there we go we’ll grab eight of those and we’ll take them back to our house inside the house we’re going to grab two of the diamonds we brought back from our caving Expedition we are going to take Some of the sugar cane and use three of it in a crafting table to make three paper this unlocks the recipe for books which will also require us to get one leather from the cows that we’ve been farming we can even craft books in our 2×2 crafting grid by using three paper And one leather but once you have crafted a book four obsidian arranged in a kind of upside down t-shape here and two diamonds either side with a book on top will get you an enchanting table we’re gonna place that right here two blocks out from each wall of the room And if we open the enchanting table you’ll see there is a space here and here one that clearly indicates lapis should go here and one that we can place a tool or anything else that can be enchanted I’ve grabbed some lapis and right now if I put my pickaxe in there a Couple of options appear here on the right hand side and these are in a mysterious coded language that’s actually the standard galactic alphabet I think from the commander Keen series either way if we hover over each of these options it will tell us what we can potentially get from enchanting this Item right now it’s saying efficiency one or Unbreaking one and the reason it has the dot dot dot question mark after it is that the table people will only tell you one of the enchantments you get but it’s possible to get more but as I alluded to in the previous episode Enchantment mechanics are tied to how many levels you have accumulated the green number on the right hand side here where it either says one or five indicates how many levels you have to have in order to successfully perform that enchantment so in this case we’d either need one level or five levels We’ve got 20 right now so both of those seem okay the number on the left hand side indicates how many levels you will spend in order to get that enchantment so in this case enchanting it with efficiency one would remove a level from our hot bar and we’d be back down to 19 Levels enchanting it with this one even though it needs us to have five levels in order to perform the enchantment will still only cost two levels and would take us down to 18. each of these options requires an additional piece of lapis in order to perform the Enchantment so if we only put one lapis in there we can only access that first enchantment we need to spend two in order to unlock this you’ll notice the third option is missing and that is because enchantment tables can actually be powered up if we surround this with Bookshelves one block away from the enchanting table which is why we’ve left this space around it that will unlock this third tier of enchantments but will also increase the amount of levels required to perform those enchantments in the first place and unless you want to quickly enchant some of your armor to Get oh I don’t know something like fire protection in case you feel like you’re going to be around a lot of lava or projectile protection in the instance that your fighting skeletons would have been useful for me the other day if you want to get one of these basic Enchantments then you can apply it and there you go you get the enchanter advancement for doing your first enchantment but On Tools like our diamond pickaxe we really want to be shooting for the highest possible levels of Enchantment oh and if we put this back in you’ll notice the enchantments Have switched around even then these are only very basic enchantments each of those is going to cost us one two or three levels it needs one two or three levels in order to perform the enchantment and each of them only says efficiency one and none of them are Offering any upgrades on that so we are going to to surround our enchanting table with 15 bookshelves that is the maximum amount we will need in order to perform level 30 enchantments the problem now is that each bookshelf is going to require three books so for 15 Bookshelves we need to produce 45 books and I’ve only got five sugarcane and a handful of leather that’s why for the next chunk of the video we’re going to talk a bit about sugarcane farming and we’re also going to start farming some of the crops that I brought back with me But haven’t had a chance to plant yet farming sugarcane is nice and easy all we need to do is dig a hole in the ground here we need to put a water source in there then we can plant four sugarcane around it and those will start to grow refilling this Bucket from our Infinite water source we’re going to place another water source by going diagonally from this one and a long one we’re going to break that block Place another water bucket there and we can put another four sugar cane around this and as the sugar cane grows we will Continue to follow that pattern until we have a group of sugarcane basically growing in as close proximity together as it can we’re also going to grab some blocks we can water log you can do this with slabs of any material you can even do it with stairs if you want to I’m Going to use trap doors purely so I can remind myself that there is water here in the first place but we’re going to put those in the same space as the water sources we have placed and these trapdoors are occupying the same space as the water they are waterlogged but The sugar cane can grow next to these perfectly fine if we remove the water from this however once the sugar cane receives a block update it will break so it does need to be grown neck to water at all times but we can prepare this little area for when sugar cane grows And just like the wheat field we’re going to be able to multiply it once we’re able to harvest a little more since we need 45 books for our 15 bookshelves and each book contains three paper we’re going to need 135 sugarcane in Minecraft terms that is just over two Stacks so we’re going to be waiting here a little while during that time we can also breed and kill a few more of these cows to get hold of some leather but while we’re there we might as well plant the other crops we’ve gathered along the Way and now we have a bucket and we can move water around we can make these Farms effectively wherever we want to so we’re going to till a 9×9 area centered on this water source that right there is the maximum area a single block of water Will be able to hydrate it will reach all the way to the corners and in this field we are going to plant one carrot although when that carrot grows some we’re going to be able to replant more of them I guess I’ll turn some of these Bones into bone meal to speed this up a little bit by the way on Bedrock Edition it may still be the case that you can grow sugarcane faster with bone meal but on Java Edition it is not sugarcane has to grow naturally carrots on the other Hand can be boosted with bone meal and once they’re fully grown like this we’ll be able to punch them to harvest them we get multiple carrots back those can be replanted and alongside that we’re going to start a potato field as well potatoes work exactly the same way we plant them In the ground we can bone meal them a little bit once we punch them we get multiple potatoes back we got five that time now we can simply let them continue to grow we can bone meal them a little bit if we want to but for now at least We’ll save the bone meal in fact I know we’ve just plotted two separate fields for them but here’s an interesting fact if you grow carrots and potatoes in rows side by side with each other this works for any kind of crop by the way but carrots and potatoes are a good example If you grow them side by side like this in separate rows carrots potatoes carrots potatoes or carrots wheat potatoes wheat carrots wheat so forth the crops themselves will actually grow faster than if you just plant a monoculture field of all one crop this kind of mimics the real life practice of Crop rotation so if you want your crops to grow naturally slightly faster at the beginning of the game here plant your character potatoes in alternating rows now with melons and pumpkins we’re going to do things a little differently because they require different treatment we’re going to place a water source Nearby still to make sure that the Farmland stays hydrated but we’re going to till a row of Farmland leave a gap and then till another row of farmland and then I’m going to craft another hoe because that one broke in fact ideally we should be leaving a two block space Between these because of the way melons and pumpkins grow I’ll break this melon sliced down into melon seeds I’ll break this pumpkin down into four pumpkin seeds we’ll plant the pumpkins along here and we’ll plant the melon over here and now if I bone meal the melon plant Like so it grows into a stalk the pumpkins will do the same thing and wow that grew instantly but as you can see they grow as a block adjacent to and attached to the stalk right here and they need a natural block on each side of the Farmland in order for them to Grow so when we break this pumpkin it can now grow over here or over here or back onto this block here and so the reason we’re putting these two blocks apart is if a pumpkin grows here then that remove moves a space where the melon can grow and it’s a good idea to Have dirt or grass on at least two sides of wherever the melon or pumpkin is growing otherwise the plant will have a hard time growing or it may not grow at all we just got another pumpkin directly from that stalk that’s pretty impressive and of course we can break those down Into more pumpkin seeds which will allow us to fill up the rest of this Row for now with these crop farms started I’m going to spend a bit of time breeding up these cows waiting for that sugar cane to grow and propagate and when we come back we’re going to upgrade our Enchantment table and see if we can do our first level 30 enchantment hey folks welcome back so I’ve spent about a couple of hours this afternoon uh taking care of some of these cows breeding them up and killing them again and getting leather that way we’ve also Got a lot more steak as you can see from what’s in my hand we have full rows of potatoes and carrots now growing here in alternating rows so we’ve got loads and loads of them we’ve actually started to build up a bit of a surplus it’s got About a stack of pumpkins and a decent amount of melon slices and stuff as well but the most important stuff is really in here I expanded our sugarcane field by an additional row and we have now got over the amount of sugarcane we need to craft our bookshelves I’m gonna grab the Leather from this box over here we’ve got 52 leather which should be more than enough we only need 45 but we might craft a few more extra books but at the very least we can split up this sugar cane into three so that we know exactly How much we’re using here there we go we’ve got 45 of each there that should all turn into paper so that has two stacks and seven in total we’re gonna put all of that in the crafting interface to get 45 books and it’s a Good thing that I had a ton of wood left over from building this house because each bookshelf is also going to require six wood planks in rows of three along the top and bottom and so with that our Book Nook can take shape we are going to Place the bookshelves like I said one block away from the enchantment table at all times and already you can start to see small particles of that weird alien looking alphabet being absorbed into the book on the top of the enchanting table and if we open that up now and put the Pickaxe in you’ll notice that we have a few more levels here and a few more interesting enchantments starting to pop up additional tiers of Enchantment start to become available so instead of just efficiency one or Unbreaking one we now have the option for the second tier of both of those enchantments but the Enchanting table will only recognize when bookshelves are placed on the same level as the enchanting table or one level above so really what we need to do to fill this enchantment table out is potentially move that torch so we can put that up there we can maybe put one More bookshelf somewhere around here you know what I don’t like this formation very much so we’re going to break down a couple of these bookshelves and note that they will break back down into books instead of dropping the full bookshelf block so we’ll need to recraft those two bookshelves and I think we’ll Put these two coming in like so and then maybe we can put one here on this corner so it’s kind of like a little Nook that we can walk into now if we open up this enchanting table we can put this in here and as you will see level 30 Enchantments have started to appear on that third tier slot and the amount of levels that are required for a first or second tier enchantment haven’t changed all that much but the enchantments that they offer have as you can see Fortune 1 is now being offered for this tier 2 Enchantment for 12 levels and two levels spent we can end up with an enchantment that will increase our likelihood of getting multiple drops from all blocks like diamond and iron but the third tier slot with that level 30 enchantment is something we really want to be focusing On and that is currently showing us Unbreaking three now we don’t have any idea what the other enchantments might be it might just give us Unbreaking three but as you can see see it does require us to have 30 levels and right now I only have 26 so we need to find a Good way of getting hold of four levels of experience and experience levels are one of those cumulative things where the higher the level the more experience you need to top it up you’ll find the first levels going through very quickly but it is a lot harder to get from level 25 to Level 30 than it is to get from Level 0 to level five so we’re gonna have to pull out all the stops here we’re going to put all of the copper that we’ve gathered so far and all of the iron that we’ve gathered so far and even some of The gold into each of these furnaces so far I’ve managed to gather most of my experience from breeding and killing these cows which will get you a little bit of experience each time you do it and we might as well continue to adopt that strategy because it gets us useful Resources and the cow pen here even though I’ve expanded it has got very crowded also I think I’ve touched on this before but baby animals will not give you anything when you kill them they won’t give you any drops or even any experience but we’ll continue Cooking the steak in this smoker as well which will cook at Double speed we’ve got the gold ingots coming back and that’s going to give us a bit of experience let’s take the iron out of here you’ll see the bar leap up as we collect our first copper there are a Variety of other activities we can do to obtain some experience we can do some fishing we can go mining looking for more coal lapis and Redstone I’m hoping Gathering all of these smelted materials is going to give me enough experience to take me over the line to 30 levels but If it doesn’t hey it looks like we’re going to need a bit more coal anyway when the steak is done cooking we can even grab some of these potatoes and cook those in a furnace the carrots watermelons and pumpkins cannot be roasted in a furnace but the potatoes Can turning them into baked potatoes if you aren’t too keen on all this cow killing can actually be a pretty good source of food right now we’re at 28 levels almost 29 we are very very close and there are a few other caves around here that I could potentially Venture Into looking for more resources like down here oh gosh that rabbit just fell to its death down here we not only have a little bit of extra copper but it looks like the beginnings of a drip Stone cave that this skeleton is guarding for some reason this is another Underground biome full of kind of treacherous terrain actually a lot of these spikes of drip Stone are gonna deal a little extra damage to you if you fall and jump on them also if they fall on you because breaking one of these has the potential to unleash a drip Stone Spike as stalactite can come down on your head it’s actually fairly rare for that to happen but a Creeper explosion could set one off either way with a little bit more lighting around here we could secure the entrance to this cave and we can grab a bit more copper to Smelt and some coal to smelt it with you already get a lot of raw copper dropping from a single ore block so I’m not going to worry too much about not mining this with Fortune look at this we’re getting tons of it already there are some zombies lurking deeper into the cave but We already have almost four stacks of copper so as long as we brought home enough coal to smelt it with that’s going to almost certainly be enough to take us over the line into 30 levels and for the mathematicians amongst you remember that one coal smelts eight Items so eight coal will smell to full stack also worth killing a couple of zombies while I’m here just for a bit of extra experience although my sword is about to break well back from that cave the rabbit’s sacrifice will not be in vain I’m gonna smoke the rabbit but all Of this coal is making me think we should probably invest in a blast furnace after all and now we’ve got the materials to do it so in order to make a blast furnace first of all we need to put three Cobblestone into a furnace to smelt it into Natural Stone take that Natural Stone and put it back in the furnace and it will smelt a further stage turning it into smooth Stone then with the furnace in the center of the crafting table we’ll put the three smooth Stone underneath it wrap five iron ingots around that and it will Become a blast furnace and as I mentioned before the blast furnace can cook oars twice as fast in the same way the smoker handles food we’re so close and we have a lot more copper now I sense an episode about copper in the near future but collecting these last Few ingots is going to take us over the line we’ve still got some stuff smelting in the furnaces behind us but it is time to see what we get for our level 30 enchantment on the pickaxe let’s make sure we have three lapis it said on breaking three are we going to get Anything else Unbreaking 3 and efficiency 4. that is pretty standard if you get anything less than the enchantment table may have cheated you but this is worth having so as you’ll know by now each time you break a block with a pickaxe the durability decreases by one the Unbreaking Enchantment reduces the Chance of that happening Unbreaking one makes it a 50 50 chance whether you’re going to lose a point of durability for breaking a block or not Unbreaking 2 makes it a one in three chance and Unbreaking 3 makes it a one in four chance so on average every four blocks We mine is only going to decrease the durability on our pickaxe by one point basically it will last four times as long efficiency lets the tool break blocks faster so right now when we’re Gathering Stone we are going to be able to gather it incredibly quickly that’s Not even the quickest we can mine Stone which we will get onto a little bit later and in fact the levels of efficiency go up to five but on diamond tools it is basically impossible to get efficiency 5 out of an enchanting table for that you need to craft a book Because books can be enchanted in the enchanting table as well and each of those will give you a different enchantment which can later be applied to tools that you need to add enchantments to and two of the same enchantment has to be added together to Reach the next tier up for example if we had two efficiency 3 books and combined them the resulting book would get efficiency 4. so in order to increase this pickaxe to efficiency 5 we need to get an efficiency 4 book or alternatively we can enchant another pickaxe with efficiency for combine the Two pickaxes and that will get us efficiency five but we’re not going to worry about that right away because we are still lacking the fortune enchantment which is going to get us potentially some more diamonds from those diamond ores that we found I don’t currently have enough diamonds to craft Another pickaxe but I do have enough iron to craft an iron pickaxe and since iron pickaxes are capable of mining diamonds if we end up with a fortune 3 enchantment here that can help us get some more diamonds until we can make a diamond pickaxe or some other diamond Tools which are going to have the enchantments we want but since chairman table just took three levels away from us that’s going to mean even more copper so we’re not going to worry about that right away for now I’m just going to be happy that I didn’t only get Unbreaking 3 on this pickaxe and there are lots of other ways we can get experience we could go back to that skeleton spawner and turn that into a trap that’s going to allow us to kill skeletons easily and gather experience that way and we have a couple of other avenues we can explore Which I think I’ll touch on in the next episode but for now hopefully you’ve enjoyed this introduction to enchanting and a little bit of crop farming on the side here thank you so much for watching the Minecraft Survival Guide my name has been pixariffs don’t forget to leave a Like on this video If you enjoyed it The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 3 continues! In this tutorial, we take our first look at Enchanting tools and armour in Minecraft 1.20.
But since we need to farm a lot of cows and sugar cane to build all those bookshelves, I take the opportunity to start farming carrots, potatoes, melons, and pumpkins. We look at how to boost crop growth by planting them in rows, and how to set up a compact sugar cane farm. We also craft a smoker and a blast furnace, explore safe ways to mine obsidian, and smelt our first copper ingots while looking for easy ways to level up our experience.
