Hello everyone my name is pixariffs and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we’re going to quickly review some of the stuff that we got from our last caving trip because that was very successful we have ourselves Four obsidian we have five diamonds and we have a whole bunch of other stuff besides each of these will probably deserve some episodes of their own a little bit further down the line because we haven’t even talked much about copper yet we’ve got a bunch of gold we’ve got Some amethyst that we can do some cool stuff with slime and glow ink we’ve got some lapis which might feature today if we get into enchanting and of course the all-important redstone which we’ll be using to make mechanisms later iron we’re all familiar with but it’s a good Thing we have a lot of it today we’re going to take a look at enchanting and we’re going to try and get the last piece of the puzzle together right now let’s hop down to the basement where i’ve actually stored some of the things that we gathered in previous episodes That were in the cave base the kind of hidey hole base that we made before now we’re going to take out the sugar cane and i think somewhere around here in a chest dedicated to mob drops yes i put some leather so we are going to be making books today because the Enchantment table will need a book to complete its recipe and it will also need book shelves so to make a book we need one leather and we need three paper and paper comes from crafting it out of sugarcane however i don’t have a great deal of sugarcane right now so we’re Going to start a little farm for it so that it can grow and i’ll explain a bit of the mechanics of sugarcane so that we can grow some right here next to our house we’re gonna place a bucket of water here and we can place sugar cane On adjacent sides sugar cane needs to be planted on some sort of organic block whether it is dirt or sand and it needs to be placed on a grass block that is next to a water source you can’t place them diagonally only on the four adjacent sides so if we want to create Ourselves a little bit more of a sugarcane farm here we need to get some more water and this is sort of where the infinite water source trick comes in handy because if we place a bucket of water there we’re going to very briefly take this water away that shouldn’t Disturb the sugar cane for now but if we update any blocks around this if i put a crafting table here for example yeah the sugar cane realises it doesn’t have any water there and it breaks no worries though we’ll put the water source back and we’ll place the sugar cane again and Then we can use this infinite water source here to place a few more water sources up here on the hillside and that’s how we’re going to structure our sugarcane farm basically finding a bunch of places that we can put down some water and plant sugar cane around it Sugarcane will grow to a three block high plant and as long as the base sugar cane is planted it will just keep growing until it reaches that three block height so if we trim it every so often we’ll be able to get more sugar cane replant that propagate it that way And we should be able to grow a lot more but to speed that process along i’m going to go out in search of any more sugarcane that we might find naturally growing in the world you’ll typically find it growing on the banks of rivers a Lot of the time it will grow in areas like swamps or on the edges of rivers in deserts in fact just across the way there i can see some on the opposite side of the lake so let’s boat over there and grab it while we still can It’s up to you whether you want to leave these patches of sugarcane growing themselves in the world just by trimming off the top block or if you want to destroy both of them so you have more sugarcane to take home but in this case we’re going to leave a couple of them Dotted around here because i find if you end up destroying your entire sugarcane farm later it’s always good to have some backups and at this point i think we probably want to start placing a few torches around the perimeter of our house as well because the monsters are Coming out at night and we want to make sure that the passage back to our house is nice and safe but in the morning as long as there aren’t any creepers around we can come back over here and plant the rest of the sugarcane that we’ve harvested maybe reshape the hill a Little bit here so that we have room to plant it and with a certain pattern of water sources if you place your water source one block over and one block diagonally like that you can actually plant some sugar cane in all this available area with no spaces in between them another Trick i like to pull at this point is to craft some trapdoors and then come out here to where we’ve planted our water sources for the sugarcane and place a trapdoor in the top part of this block here because that will keep the water source there the trapdoor is now Waterlogged meaning that it and the water are occupying the same space but it means that you can walk over it so that when you’re tending your sugarcane farm you don’t end up dipping in the water momentarily we can just put another trapdoor there you can also do This with slabs although then it becomes impossible to detect whether there is water there or not you can do it with lily pads if you have a bunch of those near the swamp or from fishing and we’ll cover fishing in a separate video because it deserves a separate video of Its own but for now we’re gonna let this sugar cane grow maybe grab a little bit more from around the world but each time we get it we’ll come back and continue to replant it because that will multiply the amount of sugarcane we can harvest every time we return to this farm While we’re on the lookout for sugarcane we’re also going to be on the lookout for cows because at this point we will need to start farming cows to have a reliable source of leather that we can use to make the books and so while i’m grabbing the sugarcane from these Environments we’re also going to be luring some cows in using wheat sticking them in a boat at this point because we’re quite far from home right now and bringing them back so that we can farm them in much the same way we have been doing the sheep not only do cows give You an excellent food source in the form of cooked beef and a very important resource in the form of leather you can also milk them using a bucket milk isn’t a liquid that you can place in the world the same way you can water or lava but You can drink it which will dispel any potion effects you’ve got on you at the time and is one of the ingredients in the crafting recipe for cake so it’s kind of important to have cows around for the moment i don’t really have any great accommodation in mind for this cow So i’m going to expand the sheep pen here and probably let the two types of animals mix although i might regret that later but having finally managed to move two cows in here we can feed them both wheat they can breed to produce a baby cow which is in there somewhere behind All of the sheep and within 20 minutes that cow will have grown up into an adult we can breed the other adults a few times in the meantime and pretty soon we’ll have ourselves a whole herd of cows we also have a bit more sugarcane to plant and it looks like Some of the plants here have grown a stage so i can trim those off we can trim off the tops of these as well we can expand our farm and already the farm is starting to repopulate itself now one fundamental thing that separates bedrock edition and java edition when it comes To sugarcane is that you cannot bone meal sugarcane on java edition you can on bedrock edition which will grow at two stages to its full height allowing you to harvest and basically reproduce sugarcane on the spot as soon as you have one and a little bit of bone meal Unfortunately on java edition you cannot do that we are limited to the mechanic of just growing sugarcane naturally so that’s why i would advise setting up a fairly large sugarcane farm to begin with is that you need a fair amount of this stuff to grow and it has to grow Naturally and while we wait for some more of that to grow i actually want to do a little bit of terraforming work around here i want to fill in this area here which has just been a giant hole in front of my house for the longest time It kind of interrupts the line of the hill and the only thing that leads down to is this little lake here which is not all that interesting to me i think we’re probably going to remove this tree here and we’ll fill in the rest of this Hole with dirt so that the ground looks a little bit more flat and we can probably use that for some more interesting stuff there we go aside from the fact that that tree is kind of half buried you wouldn’t have known the hole was there in the first place and once The grass grows over the dirt the illusion will be complete now we can turn our attention back to the sugarcane farm which has grown at least three more plants that’s perfect we can finally make our enchantment table because i’ve just been waiting for that sugarcane to Grow this whole time we can go in here we can place three sugar canes side by side like that in much the same way you make a loaf of bread out of wheat and we’ll get three paper from that the three paper and one leather can be Placed in a crafting table and air in any orientation you like and that will make a book and then finally once we have access to a book for obsidian like so two diamonds either side of that central piece and a book on top will make us an enchanting table and we Finally have access to one of the most powerful systems in the game enchanting well sort of we sort of have access to it because we can place our enchantment table in the world the book unfolds on top and right clicking on it will open the enchanting interface but it’s Important that we have a couple of things first of all this slot here indicates that you need lapis to perform any kind of enchanting so we’re going to hop back into the house here we’re going to grab a few lapis from the chest let’s bring a few of those with us from a Block we’ll break that block down into lapis items there we go and we’ll hop down here we’ll put this in the enchantment interface and we’ll put in our diamond pickaxe the most valuable item we have on us right now the enchanting interface is broken down into three possible enchantments and as you Can see from the left hand side here each of them will cost a certain amount of experience levels as we’ve gone through the world we’ve accrued experience from mining from killing mobs from smelting things and from breeding animals and there are a variety of ways you can get hold of experience in Minecraft enchanting is how you spend it so enchanting it with this first enchantment would cost us one level and our levels would go down to 24 from where they are right now at 25 the second one would cost two levels the third one would cost three levels and so On and so forth this green number on the bottom right hand side indicates how many levels you have to have in your possession in order to perform that enchantment so if we only had seven levels right now this option down here would be locked right now because we Wouldn’t have the eight levels needed to unlock the enchantment before we could spend the three levels to acquire it basically these slots will always cost one two or three levels but the amount of levels that you need to have in order to unlock that enchantment is indicated In the bottom right and as you can see right now each of these is offering us efficiency one that would make our pickaxe a little bit faster mining materials but is definitely not the best it could be right now because the other thing an enchantment table needs in Order to maximize its potential is bookshelves in a circle all around it the maximum level an enchantment can get up to the maximum amount of levels that you need to have in order to perform an enchantment is 30 and at that stage we’ll be seeing a lot more powerful Enchantments that we can put on our pickaxe in the meantime it may be nice for us to do some low-level enchantments on our iron gear though just to show you how this system works so this iron chest plate for example if i pop this in here we are being offered projectile Protection a little bit more protection against arrows and the like protection one which is just going to be a standard protection enchantment that offers a little bit of protection from all kinds of damage and fire protection one which will protect us naturally against fire and lava damage i think for now we are Going to spend two levels to get hold of protection one and we’ll get the enchanter advancement for that our iron chest plate is now enchanted it doesn’t make any difference to the durability but this protection enchantment will guarantee that we take a little bit less damage note that that isn’t indicated by The armor display here where it says plus six armor it’s still going to give us six points of armor but occasionally that damage that we take from any source will be reduced ever so slightly you’ll notice since that was a second level enchantment that’s taken two levels from Our xp bar we’re back down to level 23 meaning that we’ll need to smelt some things fight some mobs gather some more ores and get some xp if we want to reach level 30. but in the meantime we need to buff up our enchantment table so it has The option for level 30 enchants you’ll see that right now it is hit or miss whether or not it even offers us three enchantments at all and that is because we don’t have any bookshelves surrounding the enchantment table so we’re going to pick this up with our diamond pickaxe and move it somewhere Else that we can set up a more permanent station for enchanting and then we’re going to work on surrounding it with bookshelves and that is the reason for those of you who clicked on this to get a tutorial about enchanting that is the reason why i’ve covered a sugarcane farm And a cow farm in this same episode because both sugarcane and leather are going to be a vital requirement for us to get hold of some bookshelves we will need three books per bookshelf and we will need 15 bookshelves total to surround our enchantment table and get Level 30 enchanting going so that is going to take a little while and it’s probably time for us to hop down here and breathe the cows again once we have nine sugarcane and three leather we’ll turn all of the sugarcane into paper we’ll turn the leather and the paper Into books we’ll craft some planks out of the dark oak wood we have in our inventory and a bookshelf is basically a wood and book sandwich we want planks on the top and bottom doesn’t matter what material you put in they’re going to give you oakwood bookshelves and that Will give you a bookshelf block that you can place down in the world we’re going to use those to surround the enchanting table and now we’re going to expand our sugarcane farm and keep waiting for the current crop to grow because we need to do that 14 more times A little while later with the last harvest of sugarcane we managed to get all the sugarcane we needed 135 total or two stacks and seven is how much you need because that will break down into 135 paper and with nine paper per bookshelf that is 15 bookshelves we’re Gonna do the same over here with the cows aiming to get 45 leather out of our herd of cows which i have bred more or less to capacity here in the pen and i’ve only left two sheep alive so that we can breed those up again later but For now we’re gonna find all the adult cares we can and we’re gonna take care of them with an axe now it’s not guaranteed that every cow is going to give us leather it will get a lot more steak than we will leather overall but It’s usually a good idea to breed up a bunch of adult cows like this cull off the herd every so often and see how much leather you get which right now is not a whole lot yeah from all the ones we killed just then we ended up With almost a full stack of raw beef but only half the leather we need so i’m going to keep breeding the cows up and we’re gonna see where that takes us but we’ve got plenty of baby cows here still waiting to grow up so hopefully we Should be able to repopulate the herd in no time and in the meantime we can at least get started making some of the bookshelves we’ll need obviously we needed to farm a fair amount of wood for this as well but i’ve been getting a few More dark oak trees on the go there we go eight bookshelves so we’re basically halfway at this stage we only need seven more and the extra paper we’re gonna still turn into books because there’s a chance the books will be useful for enchanting as well it is frankly still Worth harvesting the sugarcane for that reason alone but sugarcane can also be turned into sugar which is an ingredient we’ll use for a couple of crafting recipes further down the line in the meantime this raw beef is going to make an excellent source of food and while we Could cook that over the campfire because we basically don’t need fuel for it we would have to return to the campfire every time four of them cooked up to lay four more on there and collect the ones that had cooked so instead we’re going to craft a smoker a smoker Is a furnace surrounded by four logs we’ve got plenty of logs in our inventory from a little bit of that tree chopping and if we replace one of the furnaces here with a smoker we can actually cook the food in half the amount of time because the job of a Smoker is solely to cook food and it’s able to do it in half the time a furnace does while still using the same amount of fuel it will burn the fuel twice as fast as well so every piece of charcoal or coal will still only cook eight items But it’ll do it in half the time the disadvantage of course is that the smoker isn’t able to process ores so we can’t use it to smelt raw iron into regular iron ingots for example that’s the job of the furnace or the blast furnace which is one of the other Furnace variants that we can craft up right now and to do that we’ll need to cook a little bit of stone we’re going to put three cobblestone here in the furnace so it smelts down into natural stone that’s going to take a moment or two here we’re going to put that stone Back into the furnace and it’s going to smelt a second time producing smooth stone and in the time it’s taken to produce those three smooth stone the smoker is already over halfway done so it’s it’s definitely cooking this steak a lot faster so if we turn back to our Crafting table and place our three smooth stone and five iron ingots around a furnace in the center we will get a blast furnace and these can be used basically for what the smoker does but for processing ores so all we need to do is pop the blast furnace in there we’ll Grab some raw iron from in here so that we can smell that up and as you can see that’s smelting the iron twice as fast as a regular furnace would as well i’m gonna quickly add two sticks in there so i don’t waste another piece of coal because coal is relatively precious to Us right now but here we go the furnace family has taken shape over here on the wall and we can pop a bit more charcoal into the regular furnace because neither the smoker nor the blast furnace can process everything and that includes some stuff like turning sand into glass The blast furnace won’t make glass any faster neither will the smoker so the furnace is still going to be required for some things we want to smelt later but with all that steak fresh in our inventory and some of the cows growing up a little bit it’s time to keep Breeding so i’ll be back with you folks when we have enough cows to get the leather together for our full enchanting setup okay we got a little bit luckier with the leather that time we’ve got 22 which is not quite enough to finish off All of the books i wanted to make but it is enough to round out our total of bookshelves to 15. so that means we can finally make ourselves a full enchantment set up and we have one book left over not only that but i can smelt Up a little bit more of the raw beef and we’ll have plenty of steak to cook with for a while now i haven’t left enough room in the house to completely surround the enchantment table with books if i place it inside of there so i think what We’re actually going to do is create another little platform almost like a diving board on this side of the house and that’s where we’re going to set up the enchantment station out in the open for now but maybe we’ll put a little kind of gazebo style cover over the top Of it we’ll bring it out over here using the dark oak planks that i’ve got since i’ve got them handy and maybe we’ll come back afterwards and make it look a little bit better supported from underneath either way we will want to place the enchantment table in the Middle we’re going to pop that over there and around the outside we need to place the bookshelves with a one block gap between them and the enchantment table and nothing can go in here not a torch not a carpet anything like that because that will block the bookshelves Feeding power into the enchantment table you can place them one block diagonally so that will work and a lot of the time players like to build a circle all the way around the outside of the enchanting setup or build it with arms kind of coming out on this side maybe putting The shelves on there like that they can be one block above the level that the enchanting table is placed on they can even be one block below as long as there is not another block in between them and they need to have space like this all around now when we open up the Enchantment table and put our diamond pickaxe in you can see that the numbers here have changed and the power of the enchantment has also changed we’re looking at efficiency one for the one level enchant efficiency two for the two level enchant but we would require 14 experience levels and finally efficiency Three for the level 30 enchants that we need down there for three levels cost unfortunately we don’t have 30 xp levels on our bar quite yet because even though i’ve been breeding animals and killing them which gets me lots of xp and smelting up the products to get xp from That as well i have not yet managed to get enough xp to get me to level 30 and while we have done a few of the different methods of getting xp in this episode we haven’t done any mining so i’m going to quickly run off to a cave That we didn’t get to explore in a previous episode and we’ll see if there’s anything we can get from there which will help us gather xp returning to this area over here where we first went mining for iron i’ve been calling this area lily pad lake in my head and We’re going to go back down here because a lot of people noticed there was another cave in this area that i sort of ignored on my way back from bringing the iron if we float on down here and turn immediately behind us there are a couple more cave Entrances that disappear away into the rocks so we’re going to explore a couple of these and we’re going to collect a few oars as we go we definitely need more coal so let’s gather a little bit of that and you’ll notice that every so often as you’re breaking coal or blocks They will drop a little bit of xp so those green orbs that fly at us occasionally when we break these blocks those are xp orbs and they slowly fill up the xp bar you’ll notice the same thing does not apply to iron and that is because we get xp from smelting iron Later so when you’re looking for ores to mine for xp you want to be looking for the ores which drop their usable products right away as soon as you’ve mined the ore that includes things like coal lapis redstone and diamonds but does not include gold copper and iron Which are the ones that you will need to smelt back at home in order to get hold of the xp there are a few other sources of xp which we will get to in a future episodes and moving on down here we’ve triggered a little bit of gravel to fall there we have What looks like a drip stone cave that’s exciting we’ll talk about drip stone a bit more in a future episode but for now it seems to be a decent source of some of the copper and iron blocks that i have been looking for so we might as Well grab some of those as well we can smelt them once we get home and we’ll get plenty of xp from that that vein was even hiding a little bit of gold ore down here as well so we’ll grab a bunch of that and with a little bit more Copper left to mine up i think that might actually do i don’t want to go all the way down into the caves and find more diamonds or redstone right away and as we go down into deep slate levels we’re not going to find any more coal so Lapis or redstone or diamonds would be the only oars we could get down there that would just give us raw xp following this water stream down in the opposite direction leads to a little crevice here where we do have a little bit more copper so we might as well grab that but I’m not really seeing anything else useful around this area so it’s probably time to head home we might have to fight a couple of mobs on our way home but once again that’s a source of more xp for us unless the mobs explode like the creepers will so let’s handle these one At a time unfortunately you don’t get xp from tricking a creeper into exploding that’s not how that works oh and we have a thunderstorm in progress right now so we’d better be a little bit careful around here and make our way to bed as soon as possible because the last thing I want is for lightning to strike our brand new enchanting setup and burn the whole thing down we might be able to do something about that though so now that we’ve covered a good handful of the ways you can get experience let’s smelt up some of this copper we’re going to do That in the blast furnace because that can process ores twice as fast although we might as well throw some in the regular furnace as well just so we get one and a half times speed with some of this unfortunately we don’t have any food to throw in the smoker at this Point and it’s also worth noting that if you cook food on a campfire you won’t get xp from that so the smoker is still a good place to be cooking food in case you need any xp from it so the blast furnace has cooked 10 11 copper ingots In the time it’s taken the furnace to cook five so this is clearly working a little bit faster than the furnace and while the rest of that is cooking up i’ll talk about the lightning rod which is gonna be very useful to us if the weather keeps storming the way it does Lightning rods are made out of three copper in the crafting table as you just saw and we can put one on the roof of our house and it will attract any lightning strikes to it and prevent them from hitting other blocks around them and starting fires most of the time During thunderstorms you’ll be protected from the fires by the fact that it’s raining at the time so the fires will be extinguished by the rain fairly quickly but in some circumstances the fire can spread quite quickly and it can lead to any of the non-fireproof blocks in your Build like wood or wool burning in the fire and being permanently destroyed and since we have fire spread switched on on this world i think it’s probably going to be for the best if we avoid that so i’m going to place this lightning rod up here on the top of my Chimney pot it might look a little bit awkward here because it’s half overlapping the section of the stairs that is cut out of the stair block model but that’s totally fine we’ll leave it up here we won’t be able to see that from a distance and that’s going to Attract any lightning strikes to it meaning we don’t get the house hit by lightning and lightning rods will actually prevent lightning strikes in a pretty decent radius so from the looks of things our enchanting setup should be safe since it will be within the radius of the lightning rod so while i’ve been Explaining that we can take a little bit more copper out of the furnaces here and we’re not quite to 30 levels but we are getting close just a couple more pieces of copper to collect and there we go that ding indicates that we have reached a Multiple of five on our levels bar and in this case we’ve got to level 30. now i’ve been thinking about the enchantments it was going to give us on this diamond pickaxe and i’m actually not happy with efficiency 3 because level 30 enchantments can give you efficiency 4 and while the levels Increase as you go up the table there’s a chance that we can get even better out of this so what we’re going to do is make ourselves something else with the remaining diamonds that we brought back from our caving trip the other day since i have three diamonds on me i think We’re going to break those down into a diamond sword for two diamonds and a diamond shovel we don’t quite have enough diamonds to make any armor and i figured we could wait for a diamond x so these two will provide a pretty decent use of our diamonds for now so let’s put One of those in the enchantment table and see what we get we have sharpness 3 as an option on our sword and we’ll have efficiency 3 on a shovel most of the time when you’re comparing tools like this that are used to break blocks you’ll get the same enchantments for Each tool so this shovel is also giving us efficiency one two and three but we can maybe use the enchantment on that instead of using it on the pickaxe and hope that we get a better one on the pickaxe afterwards sharpness on a sword will increase its attack damage so That’s potentially a useful one but once again sharpness 4 might be a better option since it is possible to get sharpness 4 on a sword another option we could explore is putting the book in and seeing what we get from that piercing power and punch a strangely alliterative Combination we could enchant our bow and that looks like something i might be interested in getting because infinity is an enchantment that means whenever we fire an arrow we do not consume arrows so potentially just having one arrow in your inventory means you can keep using your bow permanently i think we will Probably take infinity since it looks like the best option out of all of the enchantments we’ve got i’ll dig some lapis out of the chest here and we’ll run back to the enchantment table to claim that infinity enchantment and when we do we should find that there are some other Enchantments on the bow as well one of the advantages to a level 30 enchantment is that it can imbue your item with even more enchantments than are displayed when you put the item in the enchantment table so even though it will say unbreaking 1 efficiency 2 and efficiency 4 there we go that is now showing up for our diamond pickaxe there is potential for it to be enchanted with just efficiency 4 or we might end up getting more than that and that is why there’s a few dots and a question mark at the end Of it because it will guarantee that you get the enchantment that is displayed but there’s a chance you might get a couple more than that in the case of the bow along with infinity we got punch one which knocks enemies further back when you hit them with an arrow and power Three which increases the attack damage that the bow does bow damage is based on how far you draw back the arrow as well so potentially you can score a little bit more or less damage depending on how steady your aim is once you’ve drawn the Bow all the way back but overall i think picking infinity was a good choice now you will have noticed that my levels have gone down from 30 to 27 because we just spent three levels getting that enchantment in the first place so now i’ll need to return to the furnaces and Smelt up a few more items in order to regain some xp it’s also worth noting that some items will give you more xp and some items will give you less for example smelting precious materials like gold and copper will yield a pretty decent amount of experience while smelting something like sand into glass Or logs into charcoal isn’t even guaranteed to give you experience all of the time so it’s also worth noting what you’re smelting here actually makes a difference for now we’re going to keep stashing these precious materials in the basement and we’ll bring up a little bit More raw copper to smelt once we have some coal available but i want to at the very least enchant this pickaxe before we finish up the episode because i’m excited to see what the table will give us alongside efficiency for finally 30 levels oh my goodness that was a bit of A grind i ended up going mining for some coal in the local area and got myself the last touch of xp i needed so let’s hop back into the house grab the lapis that we need to enchant things and we’ll finish up the episode by enchanting this diamond pickaxe finally what’s it gonna Give us i think we got efficiency for and something else potentially cross our fingers just efficiency for oh well at least our pickaxe is a little bit more efficient now and we might be able to do something about that in the next episode but folks that is where We’re going to leave it for this episode of the minecraft survival guide i do hope you’ve enjoyed this introduction to enchanting and good luck getting your enchantment set up together
