Introduction To Enchanting! ▫ The Minecraft Survival Guide (1.13 Lets Play / Tutorial) [Part 7]

Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a wonderful day today we’re going to do something very exciting and adventurous we are going to explore this abandoned mineshaft that I found at the end of the

Last episode but before we do that I have a bit of a problem because with that steak healing up the last of my health I have run out of food yeah aside from rotten flesh and uh who wants to eat that so what we’re going to do is

We’re going to head back up to our little house we’re probably going to visit the farm and grab a little bit of food from the animals there because when you’re exploring something as dangerous and exciting as an abandoned mineshaft you got to make sure that you’ve got a

Decent meal available to you so that you can top up that hunger bar if you take damage your hunger is going to deplete faster so you need to make sure you’ve got something to replenish that so I’m gonna head up here grab ourselves a little bit of food to eat whilst we’re

Down in the mines and then we’ll be back in fact while I’m here somebody in the comments of a previous episode did point out that we could be using a different method of getting in and out of the fenced off area where all of the animals

Are being kept right now and that is by using carpets to make carpets you just take two wool of any color it’s got to be the same color and you get three carpet from it by putting it in a crafting interface its side by side like that and normally carpets are used for

Decoration like you can put them in your house to decorate the floor but they are really good for utility purposes as well and I’m gonna give you an example with the animal pen that we’ve got out of here so normally with fence posts you can’t jump over them just from a

Standing start on the ground they are as I’ve explained in a previous episode one and a half blocks high in the game so typically you cannot just jump straight over a fence now if you put a carpet on top of that fence there is actually like

A one block high section that is outside of the hitbox of the fence so you’ll notice if I’m on the edge here it’s like I’m standing on a block and then I can step up on to be hitbox of the actual fence and that allows you to use carpet

As a kind of stepping stone to get over the fence and in and also a stepping stone to get out now the animals are so crowded in here that I don’t think I will be able to place a carpet on any of the fence posts

The perimeter so we are going to have to thin the herd a little bit and take out some of these animals but that’s fine because we needed the meat to begin with now I’m actually going to use my ax to take care of some of these guys because

The the problem with having them all so crowded in like this if we swipe with a sword we’re going to damage a whole bunch of them at once and then they’re going to run around all over the place it’s going to be chaos right so instead

We want a little bit more precision we want to take out the animals one at a time and the ax is kind of better before that I think you can do the same sort of thing with a sword but it also results in the the animal not taking as much

Damage because axes do a little bit more damage so it’s it’s usually a little bit better to use an ax to take care of these guys at least at first and we’re probably going to take out a couple of the sheep along with it but that’s fine

Because we get mutton from the sheep as well I reckon we’ll probably go with say like 20 for steak or we got two 22 beef and two mutton I think that’s probably going to be fine let’s hop out here and now we should have thinned the herd

Enough that we can place a carpet on this fence post over here has tried that one BAM there we go I don’t place the carpet next to it by mistake but now we can hop over this fence any time and the animals won’t be able to use this to

Escape so it’s kind of a perfect way of getting everything set up here while I’m here I may as well actually breed up some of the animals so that we get a bit of a return on our cows but we’ll be using the leather for something later in

Today’s episode as well hopefully at least so yeah we will we will need a little bit of the leather from these cows and I’m gonna go and put that in the storage system so we can keep it safe so we know where it is but we may

As well breed some of these guys up as well while we’ve got the wheat to do so back in the house I am going to make a little bit of bread as well and we’re going to get the food smelting up in these furnaces now as you can see I’ve

Got a little bit of iron and gold ore on down there in the caves so we can probably put that on to cook as well but we’re gonna put the majority of this overall beef in there and then just leave a few coal in it so it can smelt

Up I might not cook all of that or at least I might cook it all but not take it all down the mines with me just in case we end up dying we don’t want to be short on food so we may as well do that

And in the meantime I’m going to put all of the stuff that we gathered so far on that little caving expedition in the storage system so I’ve got a nice clear inventory now the leather can go in there the rotten fly can go in there likewise the bones

Remember this is our mob drops chest so we all be keeping some of the stuff we get from killing monsters and so forth in there it’s nice to have a good organized storage system so that you know exactly where things are going to be the dirt all in there fantastic stuff

Now we’ve got a couple of logs I might even put one log on there so then that’s how we know that’s going to be our bulk storage woods chests and I’ve got another chest here which I might leave downstairs next to the furnace for stuff that needs smelting and maybe some fuel

In there at some point as well and we’ll put one here next to the bed and that can store any of our leftover kind of food supplies and things like that stuff that we’ll need instantly if we wake up or we respawn there and we’re in need of gearing ourselves up

We’ll leave the wheat outside at the farm and we should have a decent amount of steak we’ll take eight with us and we’ll leave the rest cooking in here and that should be fine I will quickly make a couple more torches and then we should

Be all geared up and ready to head back down to that mineshaft and see what we can find there here we are back down in the depths of the world headed for this mineshaft and there are a few resources around here as well there’s some gold which I may as

Well grab really fast it’s gonna be nice to have some stuff like that I’m gonna be aware of any of the stuff that’s around me in these caves I hear skeletons and spiders moving around bats and spiders all over the place in these caves so we do want to be a little

Careful and it looks like there’s a little bit of stuff to explore in this direction as well so we can like that up I heard there’s a zombie over there but they’re not gonna cause us any trouble and this is it I think yes it’s the first time we’ve actually shot anything

With a bow bows are really useful for ranged combat in Minecraft so it’s great to have one now and all you need to do is make sure you’ve got some arrows in your inventory which most often you will end up getting from skeletons but you

Can also craft them with a flint a stick and a chicken feather and you just need to hold down a right-click to draw back the arrow and release it to fire so it’s it’s really quite simple to use bows they’re a great weapon once you get the hang of them because they will

Ultimately end up saving your bacon being able to attack stuff from range instead of having to fight it up close they’re especially good for dealing with creepers and you’ll probably seem you do that a couple of times in today’s episode if that mine has a ton

Of stuff in it I’m just gonna grab a little bit of coal from around here first though because let’s face it we need a lot of torches to explore deep down in these caves the mineshaft will sometimes have torches that automatically generate in it but even so

It’s going to be difficult dealing with any stuff in there if we’re not well-prepared so we need to go in there making sure we’ve got a lot of stuff with us there’s a skeleton up there but he hasn’t seen me yet so maybe I can

Swipe it his legs go on get him oh he’s got a friend there’s two of them there occasionally when a skeleton will try and fire at you and another skeleton is in the way or another kind of monsters in the way they will end up shooting each other and start to attack each

Other like monsters don’t always just get aggressive towards the player they can also get aggressive towards each other which in this case worked out to our advantage now obviously these mine shafts and stuff are just made out of regular minecraft blocks this one here

Is made out of oak wood and you will end up being able to harvest some of the blocks if you want to take down some of the blocks to help you make a staircase like I’m doing now that’s a perfectly reasonable way of doing things so let’s

Hop up here place a torch and take stock of where we are move these fences out of the way as well there we go probably plug up this water here with something so we don’t get swept off the platform and this looks like a really extensive and interesting mineshaft it’s generated

Partway through this ravine so you can see lots of platforms sticking out there lava below us we need to be very careful on this platform to make sure we don’t fall off into that lava now let’s use some cobblestone to bridge over here this looks like it’ll be a good spot to

Make our inroads into this cave a hole and there’s a skeleton and a creeper here let’s see if we can take out the skeleton from a distance or hit the creeper the skeleton just walked off that platform did you see that that was fantastic what a team player

Well done mate thank you so much for taking yourself out of the picture it sounds like there are a lot of skeletons around here actually I think some of them might even be fighting other stuff who knows they all seem to be firing at something anyway but doesn’t look like

There’s a great deal over there so maybe we can hop down onto this platform we’ve got enough blocks that we can make a staircase if we need to and there’s lots of these wonderful minecart rails around here let’s actually take a couple of these with us now minecart rails are

Very useful if you’ve got minecart later on you can use them for a whole variety of stuff including transporting yourself around as a player you can even use them to transport items around later and it looks like we’ve actually gotten really lucky here and found ourselves an abandoned mineshaft

Chest you find these chests inside of minecart and these ones have treasure and stuff in this one’s got a few rails it’s got some powered and activator rails which are redstone components we will probably discuss at a later date some more beetroot seeds so we can expand our beetroot farm and this a

Nametag and that’ll allow you to nametag any kind of monsters or animals or anything like that anything you want to rename that say a living breathing thing you can do that with a nametag in order to put a name on the nametag though we need an anvil which requires us to

Gather a lot more iron so I will be going through this cave gathering as many resources as I can as we go but one of our chief objectives down here right now is to find a few more diamonds because diamonds are going to be a precious resource from now on we’re

Going to need them to upgrade our tools to the most powerful tools we can possibly get because diamond is the last material in vanilla minecraft at least that is an upgrade for the tools but yeah I think it will be it will be worth exploring this little area because these

Mine shafts if they generate low enough down inside the world will will often lead you to deep caves which can often have diamonds in them so let’s hop down here maybe and see if we can find anything a little bit further down in this cave it looks like the mineshaft

Itself kind of goes off in all sorts of different directions here so let’s hop through here and see if there’s anything it looks like this one leads to a dead end it’s also worth mining through the cave walls occasionally in this place because you will find a few other little

Offshoots of the mineshaft that don’t generate with any kind of natural cave opening next to them so it’s worth digging around having an explore if you’ve got enough durability left on your pickaxe definitely worth are giving it a try and look at this the more you

Dig to him the more you seem to find gold and coal and all sorts of lovely resources down here let’s grab a fair bit of this so we can take it back to our base and who knows we might end up finding some diamonds down here as well

With that little patch cleared out let’s make our way over here a few zombies dropping down from the cave walls and I think that’s the skeleton that dropped off of the abandoned mineshaft bridge earlier it certainly seemed to take a little bit of full damage when it fell so here we go

We’ve got a couple of skeletons on us let’s see if we can get them to shoot each other again like they did last time no at least we can block with the shield a oh it took the spider out for us hahaha fantastic stuff okay well let’s

Let’s go and deal with these guys hand-to-hand shall we there we go get your bony butt out of here thankfully we are all good there let’s hop down here and see if there’s anything good a little bit of lava obviously we are getting down into the lower depths and

If I turn on my coordinates here if I tell on the f3 screen you will see that we are at wide level 13 which means a couple of levels down will be getting lava lakes we might also be finding diamonds around this level so it is definitely worth exploring every nook

And cranny of these caves it’s also going to bring us some more lapis lazuli which will be perfect for what we want to do later on in this episode if we find some diamonds today if we possibly can we’re going to be making an enchanting table which is definitely the

Next step towards upgrading our tools aside from finding diamonds we will definitely need that to give ourselves a little bit of an edge in terms of resource gathering and combat and all the other fun stuff there is to do in this game oh speaking of fun stuff some more

Skeletons fighting each other perfect I’ll stay out of the way huh let’s see what else we can find in this abandoned mineshaft there’s so much stuff to explore in these they stretch on for hundreds of blocks at a time sometimes so always worth giving them a look

Around to see if you can find any loot chests any exposed minerals that kind of stuff let’s hop down here a little bit away from the mineshaft and explore the caves a little bit further down because this cave opens out here into a giant lava lake with a zombie standing there

He’s kind of pinned against the wall by the water here so that’s not a problem but look there look there in the ceiling you can see them are the blue shiny rocks of Awesomeness these are some more diamonds that we’ll be able to gather today and we need to make sure that the

Floor underneath them is obsidian first because we don’t want them falling into lava if I haven’t demonstrated this in a previous episode which I’m pretty sure I haven’t you can just throw an item into lava and it will disappear you will not be able to get that back and

Remember if you end up falling in love yourself that could be the end of you and all your items so it’s definitely worth making sure there is a solid block underneath the Diamonds that you happen to be mining especially if they’re in the floor around this level because you

Don’t want to mine out the blocks of the diamonds you don’t want to mine out the diamond or just to find that the block underneath them was all lava and that they were going to just fall straight in without you being able to collect them

So now we’ve got a few extra diamonds we kind of want to mine some of this stuff this is obsidian and it takes the longest amount of time to mine out of anything else in Minecraft it’s it’s it usually takes I think it’s about eight

Seconds to mine it there we go we’ve got our first obsidian we get the advancement for that and it takes a really really long time to mine a single block of obsidian which is bad news for us because we want to collect about 20 of these I think the minimum amount we

Will need is 14 because we want four of it to create an enchantment table and then a minimum of ten to create a nether portal which we’ll be doing at some point in the next episode but for a start I think we’ll probably gather twenty it’s a nice round number it’ll

Mean that we have enough to do what we want to do and we’ll be able to make a a decent nether portal frame with that one thing I want to show you guys briefly before we completely cut all of this out is that if you place down a water source

When you start mining obsidian then that’s a safeguard against potentially having lava underneath some of these blocks so as you can see when you mine out an obsidian block sometimes they’ll be lava underneath it and the the water flows over it instantly it stops the obsidian you just mined from falling

Into the lava and it also instantly converts the lava into more obsidian so that you can be safe from it and so that you can gather it up as you continue to mine now remember that water only flows for a distance or a maximum distance of

Eight blocks so you do want to make sure that you’re not relying on that water stream for a huge lake of obsidian you will need to you will need to move it around a little bit to make sure that it covers up the lava that you’re mining

Next you don’t want to get pushed into lava by the water current so it will be a good idea to do that but we’re gonna mine up the rest of this obsidian here until we’ve got twenty blocks and then I think it’s probably time to head back to the

Surface now when we’re heading back to the surface all hello friends there’s a slime here oh and there goes the slime well that was fortunate slimes only appear in very kind of random parts of the world it’s difficult to find them if you’re just exploring caves so the fact

That that one just happened to appear in this little area was fantastically fortunate now we are going to work on getting out of here and one great way to do that if you have a lot of water streams around you is to stand in a water stream and hold the jump button

And you can actually kind of pull yourself up in the water stream it’s like you’re swimming upwards and that becomes very useful for getting out of situations like this cave because there’s lots of falling water kind of coming out of water source blocks in the walls and it can be a little difficult

To get back up from how it low down you end up in these mineshaft if you don’t have something like that around so we’re gonna make a little bridge up here we’re going to hop back down to where we were gonna take out this creeper from a

Distance if we can there we go got to make sure we steady our aim fantastic stuff bows are actually quite powerful as well they become more powerful the longer you draw back the bowstring so obviously if you hold it down for a little bit longer you’re gonna get a a

Better shot obviously that kind of stops after a while you get the maximum amount of draw you can have before you fire it but that means you can’t fire it as fast so sometimes what you need to do is just quickly kind of pull back and fire

Really quickly in order to get something away from you so that you can take a more accurate and steady shot I can hear the farm animals on the surface here we are coming back out is it going to be light outside it is fantastic it’s the

Middle of the day very good the prime time to invent things so we’re going to come in here we’re going to put some of this stuff that we’ve gathered in the abandoned mineshaft away we’re going to put some of the gold in here we’re going

To put the iron ore in there we’re going to leave these diamonds in here for now and look at all of the lapis we dug up in today’s episode that’s fantastic I will also keep the slime in here as well because that’s going to be super useful for later on

Now with the 20 obsidian and the diamonds that we have here we can make an enchantment table but there is one thing that we still need before we can do that and that is a Book now books have to be made out of paper and leather the

We have already got from our little herd of cows over there but the paper we will need to go exploring a little bit further afield for and I don’t need to empty out my entire inventory for this because hopefully we should be able to find some just over the hill here in a

Distant land over this way I spotted a swamp biome and it might be a good idea to check there because there’s a lot of water around and sugar cane always appears near water I can actually see some of it right over there that’s that’s handy let’s go and grab

Some of that so sugar cane tends to be found around water because it can only be planted near water and it grows in sections of up to three tall like this and if you punch the bottom one the whole thing will break and you can bring

It down there we go it looks like we’re generating some new terrain over here which is why my frame rate is dropping a little bit here so there’s another patch over here let’s see if we can get three from this as well all there are some chickens around fantastic I’m seeing

Eggs on the ground this will be great so there’s another little patch of sugarcane over here let’s grab those and having six it means that we can plant three back at the base and then use three to make paper great stuff well look at these look at the chickens it’s

Our first time seeing chickens in this surely it’s not surely we’ve we’ve seen chickens before maybe it’s worth bringing them back to the base with us chickens we’ll follow you if you’ve got seeds in your hand at the same way that other animals will follow you if you’ve

Got wheat stalks so let’s bring these guys back with us and maybe we can start a little chicken farm over here as well so we’ve managed to bring the chickens all the way back to the house and in the same way that you can breed animals together with wheats you can breed

Chickens together with seeds and they will produce adorable little baby chicks ah look at that guy in his giant head so you can also get eggs which will turn into baby chickens if thrown but that is only a small chance to happen so if you want to get a lot of chickens very

Quickly sometimes it just makes more sense to breed them but then when they produce eggs you can always just throw them around on the ground and see what hatch is out of them now now that we have the sugarcane we can do a couple of things I might actually plant some out

Here by our little pond this is where our little farm has been for a while and so I think around the gravel here or on the oh maybe you can’t place them on gravel house something I didn’t know you can put them on the sander on the grass

Or dirt around this area though we’ll play three of them there and then they will gradually grow up to being three blocks tall again and then we can punch the bottom one get three back and replant just one at a time which means that we’ll always get two extra sugarcane

That we can do what we want with and there are ways of farming massive amounts of sugarcane using redstone machinery which I have no doubt that you will have seen in other people’s YouTube videos with the three remaining sugarcane we’re going to go into our 3×3 crafting grid here and we’re going to

Make paper which can be made using three sugar cane in a single horizontal row like that in fact can you make it like so nope you can only make it in a horizontal row there you go good to know and with the three paper

You can’t make this in a in a two by two it has to be in a crafting table you always get three paper from that and with the three paper we can make a book now a book can be made in any crafting grid it can be made in your two by two

In your inventory because all you need to do is put the leather in there surround it with paper like so and you get yourself a book and with that we have all we need to make our enchantment tables so let’s grab the crafting table from down here let’s hop into that

Really quick we need a book at the top there we need obsidian in a kind of reverse T shape underneath it and then a diamond either side of it like that gets us an enchanting table and this thing is going to be a very powerful aid to what

We plan to do in future episodes so we’re going to pop that here it’s always best to give it two blocks away from any wall because enchantment tables can be made more powerful by surrounding them with bookshelves bookshelves at this point though are kind of expensive because they require a lot of sugarcane

To make the paper a lot of leather to make the books with the paper and then you need three books per bookshelf and we want to have about fifteen bookshelves surrounding this little in jamun table so that is going to take us a little while in the meantime you can

Use it however the enchantments you get are going to be kind of low levels let me grab some lapis out of the valuable materials chests and I’ll explain enchanting in more detail enchantments can be applied to tools weapons and armor in order to give them special attributes usually increasing their

Speed or the amount of damage that a sword or an axe will do or allowing them to have more durability via enchantment called unbreaking there are a vast amount of enchantments in the game more than I want to cover in this episode but I’ll go you through the

Basic mechanics of enchantment and then in future we’ll be able to talk about each of them in more detail I’ve put my diamond pickaxe in here and as you can see there are two potential enchantments we can apply to it by placing some lapis lazuli in the table here we’ll activate

These two and they can be used now there are two different green numbers on this the one on the left indicates how many of your experience levels the levels you can see I have 24 of at the in the bar at the bottom of the screen there that

Is how many of your experience levels will be consumed by using this enchantment so say you wanted to just spend one level on it you have to choose the top one if you choose the second one it would have two levels and there’s a space for a third one which will be will

Become available once we have more bookshelves around the enchanting table but in the meantime isn’t accessible to us the number here on the right hand side indicates how many levels you have to have before you can use this enchantment so it doesn’t really make much sense right now but it is possible

If you surrounded this enchantment table with bookshelves to have enchantments that you could only acquire if you had thirty green levels so even though it would only take three levels to enchant that item you need to have 30 levels in order to be experienced enough to enchant that item if that makes sense

It’s something that’s a little bit easier to demonstrate than it is to explain verbally right now so we will I’d I have no doubt we will get to this in future episodes but in the meantime we could apply some low level enchantments to our armor in order to

Increase its ability so for example I can have blast protection on this chest plate which allows me to take less damage from creeper explosions and anything else that might happen to explode me like if a TNT goes off by mistake or something like that if I put

My leggings in here they also have blast protection it’s likely that that will turn up on the helmet and my boots as well because oh no we have a couple of different ones there we can have protection or aqua affinity on the helmet let’s try out the boots a lot of

The time these enchantments will group up so you’ll find that if you put a pickaxe in the enchanting table and it says efficiency for you’re likely to get an efficiency enchantment on other types of pickaxes as well doesn’t seem to be the case for this armor right now though because we could the

Intentionally put protection 1 on these boots for a single experience level so I think we’ll do that now there we go we’ve got our first enchantment it gives us a little bit of extra protection and that won’t show up in the blue number there that says +2 armor but if you have

Protection 1 then you will take a little bit less damage from monsters that attack you the same with this one you can have an unbreaking enchantment here and you’ll notice the level 3 enchantment down there is also available this time around unfortunately we still don’t have enough bookshelves around the

Enchantment table for it to be unlocked so that is going to have to wait for another time but we can always add protection 1 or unbreaking 1 to the helmet I think once again I’m going to go with protection 1 that will be nice and useful actually correction I didn’t have enough lapis

Lazuli in the table that I could activate that third enchantment that was my my mistake but yeah now we’ve got a little bit more lapis in here we don’t have a third enchantment yet but we can always put protection one on my leggings and at last of all we may as well bring

The chest plate out and see what we get protection one on that as well I think that’ll be fine so we have a full set of protection 1 iron armor and you’ll notice that the enchantment stuff glows purple that means that you can actually see when gear is enchanted and let’s see

If we get anything different on our pickaxe now there you go if I put three lapis in there I could put the efficiency 2 enchantment on my diamond pickaxe but I’m not going to do that yet because my diamond pickaxe is very valuable and once you put an enchantment

On an item you cannot really remove it you can’t take the enchantment back off you can’t upgrade it you can there are ways of removing enchantments on items but they are a little bit wasteful and what I want to do is end up having a diamond pickaxe with the best possible

Enchantments I can and that requires setting this entire thing up with lots of bookshelves around it and getting myself to 30 experience levels so that will require a little bit of extra work and it’s work that we don’t really have time for in today’s video so I think
