I am obsessed with wizard games I’ve done three videos on them in the past and I thought that I was done for a while at least until Hades 2 and wizard of Legend 2 came out until a company called ascendant Studios reached out to Me and offered to fly me out and pay for a big ass hotel room for me just so I could try the new Wizard game and what am I an idiot of course I said yes to that [ __ ] it’s a wizard gamer you kidding me Immortals of avium is the Newest game by EA originals and oh okay wait yay Originals is not the same as being developed by EA as far as I can tell they give developers complete creative freedom and offer just the funding it takes two as an EA original you guys love that game so much this Video is sponsored by EA and because of that let’s set some ground rules I’m not gonna come out here and say Immortals the best Wizard game of all time 10 out of 10 simply because they’re paying me to make this video that’ll be disingenuous and I’m not here to mislead You guys and besides I only play like a three hour demo anyways I play a ton of wizard games and I have a very distinct idea in my head about what I like from the genre I’m gonna go over the game mechanics and then give my two cents on What I think works and what I think doesn’t work I’m gonna format my opinion on this game in the exact same way that I do all other games that I talk about on this channel and we’re gonna figure out if this is pancakes or syrup if you Know what I’m saying and also because the deadline for this video was extremely tight there’s not going to be a lot of visual stuff going on in the video okay anyways here’s Immortals of avian for whatever unknown reason AAA Studios no matter what just cannot get wizard games down man they lack that Spark and level of polish that you get with Indie developers Immortals of avium is the first game to break that Trend I actually like this game and all of the issues I have are small potatoes that can be fixed very easily the number one thing they had to nail with this game Was the combat if the combat sucks Nothing Else Matters this is where Hogwarts Legacy messed up now luckily the combat in this game is fun as [ __ ] you got three types of spells blue red and green each of them has their own Associated primary attack control and Special move the Spells have this huge weight behind every shot that makes them super satisfying to shoot you get this dope hover ability to give you more control over the battlefield The Shield blocks basically all damage but you have to sacrifice Mobility to keep it up and unlike some other games most enemies Don’t just stand there they chase you down and force you to make decisions some of them have elemental weaknesses and strengths it’s a lot of little things that add more depth progressively over time the gameplay rewards players for use using a variety of spells and getting creative some of the technical decisions however Do the exact opposite you can’t fully unlock the skill tree so you’re incentivized to optimize just one type of magic you can only switch spells in one specific order and switching between them takes a long time so you feel shoehorned into using the same one see This is what I was talking about there’s a lot of very easily fixed issues that add up to dampen The Experience reduce the time it takes to cycle between weapons by 25 to 50 and figure out a better way to switch between them and this problem goes away there’s also a Ton of customizability in total there’s like 25 spells and 80 talents talents could use some work they’re mostly just increased damage or higher defense just copy cross code people their skill tree is literally perfect but the Spells do the Spells are sick in this game the sigil variants completely change your Primary attacks you can make them into a sniper a homing machine gun a bunch of other [ __ ] or be like me and make the shotgun completely overpowered so just one shots every enemy in the game and makes the Mini bosses do this funny Ragdoll being able to switch up my Attacks with a control spell or Giga move felt sick and I cannot wait to see what the end game looks like speaking of which this is a single player only narrative driven game but I I can’t really tell you if this story is good or not I only got to play three Levels from randomly selected points in the story is the World building consistent are the characters likable is the ending satisfying I don’t know all I can really give you is a plot summary it’s futuristic sci-fi but they use magic instead of Technology magic is a scarce resource that countries fight Over and you basically get to be a Navy SEAL fighting to defend your supply of it most people can only use one type of magic but the main character Jack manifests all three Force chaos in life they have a very specific story that they want to tell and you can’t really Influence it there’s no branching paths alternate endings or dialogue choices it’s a very linear game and that’s not a bad thing some of my favorite games of all time are linear as hell it lets you create a super specific curated experience for the player where you can Plan around their exact power and skill level the issue in this game is this God damn objective marker Dot from hell look at this man I mean do we really need the dot to tell me to go in this giant open cave it’s the only path look at an Update every two feet to make sure you can’t possibly get lost in this extremely linear game and once you get into the cave oh look it’s telling me how to get to the end look at at this it’s a hallway I’m not gonna get lost again linearity is fine and Corridor Shooters are fine but when you add something like this and it completely rips the player out of the immersion suddenly I’m not a triarch battle mage Immortal fighting through a war I’m a toddler being taken on a tour literally just to leave the dot and it’s fixed You’d feel way less pressure to rush through and it’ll give you a lot more time to explore and appreciate the insane graphics in this game oh my God this game looks incredible I legitimately thought that the gameplay trailers were pre-rendered or something but no that’s just the game looks like That that’s just what it looks like look at the [ __ ] water animation while I fight the dragon you use a special spell and it goes look at this reload animation oh my God that’s how you [ __ ] do it man unfortunately a lot of the visuals are lost because of three More small hiccups number one even on the lowest possible settings the sensitivity is way too high I want like half of this number two an fov slider would be nice if they launched the graphic settings for the preview build so I mean who knows maybe they’ll have It on release I felt like I was zoomed in the whole time I was playing which coupled with the high sensitivity and inconsistent frame rate genuinely made me nauseous at one point which leads me to number three the performance again I only played a demo but at this stage it Looks like you were going to need a very powerful computer to run this game they are recommending a 12th Gen processor in 3080 TI and that’s to get medium to high settings only I obviously haven’t tried it on a lower spec system but based on the demo I played if your computer is More than three years old it might struggle to run this smoothly and I’m not a game developer but I think there is one thing in particular to blame for this oh my God there is too much visual clutter in this game this is the number one problem with Immortals of AVM look At a shooter like CS go and the chat could be smaller and it’d be nice if the elements were transparent but overall the HUD elements stay out of your way so you can focus on the gameplay and that doesn’t change when you get into a firefight now what if we made the gun This big and we move this here and then this here and we added a couple explosions and Ray traces that’s enough that’s that’s enough notice how you can’t tell what’s going on anymore now hop back to oh [ __ ] what the f where is the enemy even out here where is he There is a reason why 99 of magic games are third person or top down once they start adding in all these explosions and particles and effects and Unreal Engine polygons and lighting effects Etc it becomes really really difficult to tell what’s going on a big part of the combat In this game is just looking around trying to find where the next enemy is I am not saying to delete any particle effects or animations absolutely not this game looks incredible what I am saying though is that maybe we don’t need to see our current objective at all Times maybe shrink the gauntlets by like 20 maybe make the particle effects a little more transparent or turn down the brightness or have the explosions clear away a little faster there’s a lot of little fixes that can be made to greatly improve this because it’s not actually a Big potato it’s a bunch of small potatoes that add up to be a genuine problem now I can actually demonstrate how fixing this would improve the game because they actually did fix it in the best part of the game the boss fights first of all it’s just you and one other Guy in the arena there’s no explosions you can’t see through a particle effects blocking your vision so you can’t see who shot them nope just you and one other guy you gotta beat the [ __ ] out of you can always tell exactly where you’re at and what you got shoot at they’re not Super difficult but by making them attack you from various distances the developers Force players to use different spell types which makes you feel like a genuine wizard utilizing a huge variety of spells to take down an incredible boss this hand of the sand drag fight was cool too until they Swapped it out for color matching the boss fight what the hell is this but listen I know what you guys really want to know in terms of wizard games is this game more pancakes or is it more syrup answer syrup it’s not really a wizard Game as much as it is Magic Call of Duty with a few extra bells and whistles the lead developer was literally working on Call of Duty when he came up with the idea for this he wanted to swap out the helicopters for dragons and the bullets for spells and that’s basically what we Got they wanted to make a wizard game but instead of focusing on what makes wizard games awesome or even what makes magic awesome they focused on spectacle and making it look like a wizard game if you like shooter games and are looking for a break from the monotony of army Dudes with M16s you will love this game if you’re just a guy who likes wizard games honestly you might still like it again I think it’s fun it’s flashy enough to be satisfying there’s plenty of customizability and the boss fights go hard it’s just got a few Kinks to Work out and plenty of time before launch to do so it comes out July 20th on Steam Xbox and Playstation thank
