All right so I was just browsing Twitter and I found this article by avast on a fast blog minecraft players exposed to malicious code and modified skins okay all right apparently there’s now viruses and skins on minecraft great just absolutely wonderful anyway I like this image like this is like the average Minecraft player right here yeah that’s that’s pretty much the average minecraft player right there the average high pixel player anyway yeah so close to 50,000 minecraft accounts infected with malware I’m gonna zoom in right here close to 50,000 minecraft accounts infected with malware designed to reformat hard drives and More nearly 50,000 minecraft accounts have been infected with malware designed to reformat hard drives and delete backup data and system programs according to a vast data from the past 30 days the malicious PowerShell script identified by the researchers from a vast vast threat labs whose uses minecraft skins created in PNG file Format as the distribution vehicle skins are a popular feature that modify the look of a Minecraft players avatar they can be uploaded to the Minecraft site from various online resources so I assume that this is the malicious code apparently in the PNG file apparently I’m not 100% sure how this works but This is something very interesting I I never really thought that you could hide something like a like some malware in skins but I guess look up for this guys but let’s continue our malicious code is largely unimpressive and can be found on sites that provide step-by-step instructions on how to create viruses With no pad so obviously people who are doing this around 12 years old they’re not anything to be worried about well it is fair to assume that those responsible are not professional cyber criminals the bigger concern is why the infected skins could be legitimately uploaded to the Minecraft website with the malware Hosted on the official minecraft domain any detection triggered could be misinterpreted by the users as a false positive so here’s a hosted URL of malicious skin we have contacted Mojang the creative minecraft and they were working on fixing the vulnerability why minecraft as of January 2018 minecraft had 74 players Million players online an increase of about 20 million players year on year ok bla bla bla bla bla over the course of ten days we blocked 14,500 infection attempts despite the low number the scope of escalation is high given the number of active players globally most of them are probably come Together most of them are coming from Russia although minecraft is played by individuals across a broad demographic spectrum the largest demographic the largest demographic is 15 to 21 year year-olds which accounts for 43% of the user base only 43% I think that’d be like 70% that’s interesting but the bad Actors may have been may have looked to capitalize on a more vulnerable group of unsuspecting users that play a game trusted by parents and guardians how identifiable is the threat oh my god users can identify the threat in a number of ways the malware is including in the skins available in the Minecraft Website through examples that contain the malware it can be seen below not all skins are malicious but if you’ve downloaded one similar to one to those featured below we would recommend you run an anti-virus scan oh my god who would have thought this skin right here who would have thought this skin is Actually like a virus oh my god yeah users may also perceive unusual messages in their account box some examples identified are you’re a nail buy a new computer this is a piece of you have maxed your internet usage for a lifetime your ass got glued other evidence of infection includes system Performance issues caused by simple tour starts and Exe loop or an error message related to disk formatting okay pretty much the same to download Avast but honestly like I would never expect that you know you could actually put malware in skins but I guess you can I guess it’s just like simple notepad Stuff like that’s that’s written in PowerShell so here’s something that’s pretty important that’s a little addition to my video which I wouldn’t have seen unless it was wasn’t for Quig so thanks Quig for replying to this guy’s here so I actually saw this tweet but he basically said that uh so Basically Avast Antivirus you were saying that fifty thousand people went and looked through a code and in the image files from malicious script and ran the code themselves a game where people use the term easy and I thought McAfee was bad and as you can see right Here it says however this code would not be run or read by the game itself the code would not even be able to run by itself additionally if you found it the code within the file and chose to run it your antivirus should detect and block the attempt Here’s what they said also if they actually the research they would see in the code that they claimed to be the malware that there were there was nothing validating to drive becoming wiped and he go to even Windows operating system requires it for it to be validated for this Action so pretty much this could be a false alarm not a hundred percent sure whether or not there was actually malware that could actually harm you in these skins or it’s just a carrier for the malware not sure yet but yeah that’s pretty much it like that’s all I have to Say this is pretty weird but see you guys later peace out Video Information
