So you want to build a house right now it’s probably a fuzzy idea in the back of your head you have an idea of what you want but you don’t know how to put it into minecraft of course you could look on google maps or pinterest to find Some inspiration but when you’re making more than one build or a large complex build it’s not easy to get started in this video i’m gonna walk you through my nine easy to follow steps to bring that fuzzy idea in the back of your head and put it all the way into minecraft [Applause] the first step is to gather your ideas oftentimes this is the hardest part you have to ask yourself what do you want to build in this video i want to build a house i was walking through the terrain of my new city project and i found this Really cool spot on the west coast it has mountains to the north and the ocean to the south and it’s sort of these rolling hills and it has this forest great architecture does a really good job at feeding off the environment around it so that’s what we’re going to Do feel free to follow along with these steps with your own build as we go through it but i’m going to take a piece of paper and a pen and what we’re going to do is we’re just going to put our ideas down on paper i’m redrawing this For the purpose of this video but this is what my original drawing looked like notice how it doesn’t actually make any spatial sense you can see that i had a pitched roof and i wanted to connect this column down to the corner of the deck but that didn’t happen because i Was just putting down my ideas so this step applies to any type of build but for this house i want to have a pitched roof i want to have big glass windows on the side i want to have a wraparound deck because if we’re going to be on the Edge of a cliff looking towards the mountains the forest and the ocean i would love to have a great view it might be nice to have a chimney although i don’t know if we’ll get around to it and maybe add some dormers up top and some clear story windows so now i’m just Lightly sketching it in nothing too crazy and we’ll bring it around this side and then pull it around the corner so i’m going for this sort of pacific northwest type of feel where you can expect quite a bit of rain so how we can reflect this in our design is we can Have really large overhangs that go over the wall of course and then all the way over the side of the deck the purpose of overhangs is just to deflect rain and snow out of the way so it doesn’t hit your wall now of course it’s not a huge Deal if rain hits your wall but walls are not entirely waterproof as you might expect a lot of walls especially in wet climates will have an air gap in the actual wall between the first layer of cladding and the inside so that any water that gets through can go into this Air gap and will go down and drain out down the bottom also a note on the clear story windows the purpose of clear story windows is to get extra light into a space when you might have a large roof area they’re pretty common in airports and when you Add your clear story windows it completely changes the feel of the space so now our idea is down on paper of course it’s nowhere near perfect and you might have to do a couple iterations to get the idea you want here’s a personal example this is a tower that i built a Couple weeks ago you have your first iteration which i wanted sort of this curve but i didn’t really know where it was gonna go here’s the second one where i thought i wanted maybe a band around it to make it seem like it was being pulled in from one side the third one Here i figured i wanted something more like the towers in mississauga with the wrap around balconies and then the fourth is the final one where i decided on a nice curve and then i added a nice base at the bottom you may find that as your builds become more complex having More iterations of your idea will give you a better result Our second step is making a list of our needs and our wants planning builds is important it helps you reduce unnecessary clutter for this house we need a kitchen a living room two bedrooms two bathrooms with one being in ensuites and we want a pool a sitting Room at the entrance an office and a dining area these wants aren’t required in the build but they’re nice to haves for more complex builds divide these two lists further into sections so if you’re building a high rise you might want to talk about the bottom section of your Build versus the top if you’re working with a relatively small space only put the absolute requirements for your needs list in real architecture this is a bit more complicated and we like to refer to it as functional programming [Applause] Now as a part of step three it’s time to build our exterior the previous video in the series is all about the tips tricks and techniques used to build exterior if you’re interested watch part one Do For step four we have stage one decor we will decorate our build in two stages the purpose of this split is to keep you inspired as you continue to build so let’s add some small decorations the pool a little shed trees shrubs just something to give it life Step five is interior planning there’s three sub steps to this step the first is the bubble method the second is making floor plans and walls and the third is planning your furniture let’s start with the bubble method this is a method that allows us to size our rooms And have connections between rooms i’ll show you what i mean in our house the living room is going to be the biggest space so let’s write the word living and put a bubble around it second i want the kitchen to be off to the left so we’re Gonna write the word kitchen put a bubble around it and then connect the two this connection on paper shows that you can walk from one room to the other next we have a small sitting room that we can connect to the kitchen and the living room we can have an office in the Corner only connected to the living room we can have one bathroom that’s connected to the living room and then each bedroom is going to be also connected to the living room however one of those bedrooms is going to have an ensuite attached take note that this method covers everything from our needs List and a handful of things from our wants list when going through this process make sure it’s the same shape as your building now we can go ahead and add arrows going out from some of these bubbles to signify exits so that’s the first part of the step the second part is floor Plans and walls using the bubble method that you just created go into your minecraft build and start to add walls i would recommend using wool and placing down rough walls where you think you want them but still being able to modify them when needed only once you are 100 Sure that you want that wall exactly where you put it then can you bring it up from the floor to the ceiling unless you’re playing in survival i would not recommend using minecraft doors the third part of this step is planning your furniture so let’s go ahead and take Some wool and we can just place down this wall where we want our furniture try and keep it roughly the same size just from your previous experience of course you can always change this later but it’s a nice estimate don’t overdo it with your furniture less is more Step six is all about figuring out what type of interior style you would like to have pinterest is my personal go-to for inspiration you should always be conscious of colors when working with interior typically you’ll either work with a range of colors on the color wheel complementary colors or grayscale You may also mix all three of them together if you know what you’re doing or you can use advanced color theory if you don’t care too much for color theory search these four words on google architectural color palettes and then the fourth word is either a feeling or Style for feeling you can do cozy warm or cool and for the style you could do mid-century modern seaside or forest those are just some ideas for our interior we’re going to use a range of colors and a handful of grayscale we’re going to go with green a Little bit of yellow some gray and lots of brown this is going to give us a very earthy feel which is going to work well with our exterior and the terrain around our house Step seven is building the interior and decorations now that we have our theme we can go ahead and design some furniture a trick i like to use when designing furniture i separate it into structural versus usage what i mean by structural as it’s just the thing that’s Holding your furniture up so if you have a table that would be your table legs similarly for usage that is whatever is not structural so for a table that would just be the tabletop the reason for this separation is it allows you to color coordinate better when i build the Structural components of a piece of furniture i will typically make this either white black or gray the usage part of your furniture however follows your color palette So Building furniture in minecraft is not my strong suit so i’m working on it off camera so i can better convey my ideas in future videos step eight is designing our lights and lighting systems there are two main types of lights that you will encounter direct and diffused direct typically Consists of overhead lighting and diffused is where light bounces off something else before it hits your eyes diffused lighting is a lot more comfortable to be around so that’s why you will find it in homes direct lighting may be used in hospitals or schools a place that you need to feel Awake but of course those are both types of artificial lighting the best type of light is natural light the issue is that you can’t really have windows all around your building for two main reasons the first is that windows are very expensive when compared to walls the second is That heat is able to flow through a window much much easier compared to a wall therefore depending on the type of climate you live in there is a balance with the size of windows versus walls now this will be more prevalent in older buildings in newer buildings windows are Getting much much better so that’s why you’re seeing a lot more glass towers but if you either don’t want to or can’t have a glass wall you can add skylights or clear story windows Step nine is our final step and is stage two decor with this we’re just going to add our final little details we’re going to finish up our landscaping maybe add some electrical lines some final touches of greenery and maybe some gravel around the edge of your house for water Drainage just be careful of your decorations too little is boring and too much is ugly you need to find a balance And that’s it those are my nine steps to take your minecraft building from a fuzzy idea in the back of your head to a fully developed build that you can be proud of i hope you found
