Hello guys and welcome to five tips for building ruins in Minecraft tip number one is cause if something’s ruined you got to explain with the blocks how it basically became ruined um this is a really easy example right so as part of uh my build T Shaka here there is a Lower city that is surrounded by lava and at one point an extra little lava uh tunnel burst and it flooded this whole place of course down here we have the place that actually got ruined so this is just a typical uh little house and we can see That there’s still bits of it that are intact for instance this used to be a window this was a patio door of course uh another window here probably a lantern hanging up there but having a clear cause for why you’re build was ruined is really important to creating a strong narrative Uh around your build Continuing from cause I want to show you uh another way that your build can get destroyed so under this Lake here you can see that there are ruins uh this is a place called Red Lake for the roses that grow along the side and what happened here is that the Lake uh water level Rose and it flooded these buildings and now we have uh drip Leaf all over the place as well as the remains of the buildings including the chimneys here so that’s another way that your build can get ruined you could say that it is uh SE uh separate kind of Environmental factors so it might be Lava it might be fire uh water levels Rising it could be snow if you’re building in a snowier place we’re going to hop over to the next tip now our second tip is degradation so how long how long has it been since your build was destroyed and What’s happened to it in that time this place is called Port Rosewood and it’s only been a short time that it’s been ruined so if we come in we can see that it’s a place that was abandoned uh kind of slowly it’s not all at once because There’s not a single thing that killed it which means that people took out their Furniture so most of the walls are still standing but the building is empty because people took away everything that they could pick up essentially so the only things left behind are this really big Bookshelf uh an empty chest and a furnace oops here we have some doors that are beaten down but we can see that the wood is still here it hasn’t been so long that it’s rotten away uh another tip for this is you could do your signs so this Place was called the seven cats in a Tavern and you can read different bits of it from both sides that’s another way of showing that your place is in disrepair but not rotten and over here we have a burnt out church so I just talked about causes and The cause for why Rosewood was slowly abandoned was that the church burned down and people stopped wanting to live here basically tip number three is replacement so under this Castle here is an old prison it’s completely run down and we can see that uh most of the Places have been blocked up and if we come to the end here uh the roof is caving in so it’s a pretty dangerous place to be they don’t really want to use it as a prison anymore so what happens is essentially that you’re going to rebuild the prison somewhere Else just outside the castle here we have the replacement prison that they built and this is a much nicer prison if we come inside we can see that it is not ruined at all and it’s still in very nice working condition so that’s something to keep in mind when you’re building your Ruins if the place was serving a purpose which it should have if you’re talking about uh builds with narratives behind them then what is now fulfilling that same purpose in your world in this case it’s a new prison tip number four is resettlement so now that your place has been ruined For a while most of the inhabitants left right well what happens when new people come in in this case this old castle has been taken over by Bandits so we can see that this is a place where the degradation is very severe all the wood has rotten away so There used to be a wooden Palisade a wooden wall around the whole thing that’s completely gone and most of the stones that are remaining are completely crumbled or leaning like this Tower and what that means is that even though the place is no longer used for its original Purpose in this case a castle it can still be a very strong and useful defensive structure so up here we can see that somebody is using this ruin Tower as a watch post with a spy glass if we come down we can see that in what used to be The uh the feasting Hall people are sleeping on straw mats and Carpets on the floor and they’re even still um making fires so Rec settlement is an important question that you want to ask about your build is it still abandoned or have people moved in uh if your world is Something like an RPG uh say Skyrim The Witcher 3 Fallout 4 then chances are that people have moved in because these places are excellent uh Bandit hideouts which is exactly what this is and tip number five is reactions so how do the people in your world react to this place being Abandoned and how do they re react to it being resettled in the case of these Bandits um an important part of the lore about this place is that it has become a hub for Highwaymen and robberies so if we come out we can see that there are settlements in the Distance and what happens is that the people who live here now are criminalized in society and there’s a big effort to try and uh make this place abandoned again to remove these people from the ruins so if you’re thinking about the lore of your place do the People around uh your ruined care that they’re ruined do they care that people are moving back in if they do what are they doing about it is this uh a political issue is it a personal issue are your characters going to be asked by say the local Lord to clear This place back out or perhaps are they going to be asked by a Bandit leader to replace the bandits that are here and install their own so
