[Screen reader] Owner LogicPro says “nice build” [Chris] Hi, I’m Chris and I’m a blind Minecrafter. And, I can confidently say that I think Minecraft may have saved my life. Um, what kind of shots are you guys gonna want of him and I? [Screen reader] Recognizing birch log. Recognizing oak log. [Chris] So, playing Minecraft for me is kind of a process. I have to be in a room with very dim lighting, with a big monitor that has pretty decent brightness. [Screen reader] Multiplayer button. Minecraft Realms button. [Chris] The voice that you hear when I interact with things In the world is technically a screen reader. [Screen reader] @whispers to you: “City Hall” [Chris] Text to speech has definitely become a huge part of play. I definitely would not be able to get as much information about the world as I can without it. I can use it to find out what biome I’m in if I’m not sure, I can use it to find out what block I’m looking at, if I’m not sure what item I have I can get it to read attributes of different enchanted weapons and things like that. repair and name edit box [Screen reader] Repair and name edit box. [Screen reader] Large chest. [Chris] Most of the information that I get from the environment is definitely from sound, but having speech there especially now that I can do things like uh tell what block I’m opening and things like that Definitely helps with a lot of the more specific information that I need. [Screen reader] Seven large chest are. [Screen reader talks indistinctly] I’ve got an eye condition called cornea sclera and it basically means that both of the corneas In my eyes are underdeveloped and do not focus light properly, and I’ve had that in both eyes since birth. If I were to be standing on the edge of a Minecraft village and unless I get really really close they’re basically just going to look like Wooden blobs in the middle of a field or wherever the village is situated to me. So, I really can only make out any modicum of detail if I’m really close to something. [Chris] Alright, here we go! [Player] We’ve got all but one done, are you guys ready for this? [Chris] Yeah let’s do it. You guys ready? [Player] Ready! [Screen reader] (indistinct) has made the advancement Withering Heights. [Chris] Oh man, here we go! Well the Blind Minecraft community is pretty small. To give you some numbers, blind people actually make up less than one percent of The earth’s population and so I’d say gamers are probably less than one percent of blind people, so the folk that play Minecraft are probably less than one percent of blind gamers, so it’s a pretty niche community. On our server we don’t have any external plug-ins running, we don’t have Anything changing the visuals of the game and we use all of the various tools and features that Mojang has provided to shape the server for what we need. Come here! Come here! Yes! Ah! I gotta eat! Well one thing that Minecraft has definitely helped me with is my situational awareness. Because of the blocky nature of Minecraft and the very specific conditions that i have to play in, I’ve actually been able to sit and track the motion of the sun and combining it with all of The information that I had tried to learn on, you know, rising in the east setting in the west – using that to orient yourself north or south, and then going outside and closing my eyes and just trying to… okay I know it’s this time of The day, this is the direction I’m facing, this is where the sun should be, and just closing my eyes and feeling for that heat, it was definitely uh an unexpected eye opener when it comes to that. A few years ago I was walking to work with my dog, and one of these streets that we have to cross on the way there gets pretty busy. At one point we realized that a truck driver had decided to ignore the red light that we were crossing at. Based on how fast I could hear the truck was coming, where I was in the road, I had to choose to go forward and hope I made it across in time because I had no clue what lane the truck was in. You know thanks to a lot of situations in Minecraft – reacting to Creepers, dodging skeleton arrows, dealing with zombie hordes and having to react very quickly – it helped me make the decision to retreat to the safety of the median. So thanks to those situations and helping My reaction time, I can confidently say that I think Minecraft may have actually saved my life. Video Information
