We had no choice now. With the Pass of Botan cut off by the dark magicks of Sarupol the Many Coloured, we could no longer take the South road around the mountains. Neither could we fly over them. The only way, now, was through.
So it was that I, Simpo, Bearer of Grandma’s Capital One True Credit Card, would come to the Gates of Supanene. But I would not come alone. With me were nine paragons of the many peoples that stood for all that was good in Middle-Taotao. The Ranger, Aragourd, last in the line of the Pumpkins of the West, brought us by guile and courage safely through the traps and snares of the Enemy, the Sadistic Tyrant, Lamy. And, counseled by the timeless wisdom of Kaledalf the Green, a glimmer of hope remained in the hearts of all that, in the end, light would always triumph over darkness.
Even still, it was not without fear that each of us passed the threshold into the long dark of the Mines of Supanene. Gimbroccoli, son of Gloinbroccoli, did little to ease our minds, telling of how his people once called these mountains home, digging deep and greedily, fashioning halls of resplendent stone from the very heart of the mountains. In doing so, they awoke something in the nameless murk near the roots of the earth, something that was better off left to its ageless slumber.
“Keep your wits about you,” advised Legoleaf, Envoy of the shELVES ;). “I sense great malice in the shadow of this place.”
Cherry and Plumpin, my companions from the peaceful green hills of the Shoire™, shared a fearful glance. Plumpin backed into a crumbling pile of parchment, knocking it over, kicking dust into the stale air.
“Ha CHOO” sneezed Plumpin.
His sneeze echoed down the narrow tunnels, resounding deep and far away into nooks and corners that had received no sound for untold centuries. Everyone held their breath.
“Fool of a Root!” scolded Kaledalf. “Why don’t you say ‘Bless you’ next time and rid us of your rudeness!”
Plumpin cringed and looked abashedly at his hair Kingdom Hearts feet.
Then there was the drum. Doom, doom, down in the deep dark, slow and irregular. Then DOOM DOOM DOOM. Shrill shrieks pierced the gloomy air, rising in pitch and intensity as if approaching.
“Nekko!” roared Aragourd.
“Kushami! Kushami tasukaru! Kushami kushami!”
Horrible yelps could be heard just around the corner, along with the padding of many soft-soled feet. They swarmed into the room.
“Taskaru!” screamed the first one in. Aragourd chopped its leafy head clean off with his sword, Nardill.
To each there were four foes. Even the Small Simps like myself fought tooth and nail. Once again, I wished I was back in my gamer chair, throwing my allowance at virtual personalities, hoping they would say my name and wish me a happy birthday. It wouldn’t be the last time.
“Based!” yelled Plumpin, sticking a shrieking carrot with a small penknife.
Kaledalf smacked him across the face with an open backhand. “Based? Based on what? Shut your mouth when you’re talking to me and use words properly or I’ll turn you into a newt.”
That’s when we all noticed. The beat had stopped. A shared feeling of dread settled on all of us.
The ground shook.
“HaaaAAAAAAN!”
“What fresh heck is this,” asked Chloromir, Captain of Hodor.
Kaledalf leaned wearily on his staff. “It is the Nenerog. A demon of the ancient Peach Flame.”
An infernal pinkish light lit the chamber.
“Run!”
Down halls of hewed stone, across perilous bridges that violated every accessibility mandate known to man, we ran madly.
Just behind us, in a great gout of flame, a dark form rose to the ceiling. Its green eyes pulsed like the core of a star.
“HAAAAAN!”
Kaledalf met it on a narrow bridge.
“You cannot pass!” he boomed.
The demon swelled to its full height, jets of pink flame spurting like an aura of hellish light. “Eh!? Nande?” it roared, taking a step onto the bridge.
Kaledalf smirked. “Keikaku doori.” He smote the narrow bridge with the butt-end of his staff. A dull thud, followed by violent cracking echoed throughout the chasm. Then all was still.
The Nenerog snorted. “Move, Oji-san, or I’ll… OH SHI-”
The demon fell in a confluence of flame and shadow, down into an endless abyss, as the bridge gave out beneath it. Kaledalf turned towards us, a smug smile smeared across his face. He made to move towards us.
Plumpin called out. “Kaledalf! Watch out! I dropped my bag of marbles on the bridge!”
“What marb-” Kaledalf stepped on a dozen glass baubles went skating off the edge into the abyss.
We all turned to look at Plumpin.
“Lemme just go pick those up real quick.”
