Brandon, maybe we should talk about the update. -Yeah, maybe. You know… -Yeah. -It is Trails and Tales. -Trails and Tales. I may have said “Tales and Trails” earlier on. -That happens all the time. -Yeah. Hello. I’m Agnes and I’m the game director on Vanilla Minecraft. I’m Brandon and I’m a game designer on Vanilla Minecraft. The armor trims you find represent the unique story that you’ve journeyed throughout the world. Yeah, armor trims are really both about your trails and tales, because they literally show… They’re like souvenirs from your journey throughout the Minecraft world. Then you can also make pretty armors, so it’s about self-expression as well, which is a big thing for this update. -What is your favorite armor trim? -Rib. It’s hard to pick one, because it depends on what I want to do. But one of my favorite trimmed armors that I made was with that one. I think my favorite is definitely the Silence armor trim. It’s from the Ancient City. It has a 1.25% chance to spawn in any chest. So it’s the rarest armor trim of the game. It’s the one armor trim where we broke the rules of armor trims and just said: “No, most of it covers it.” You can have a piece of armor that looks like emerald armor, or like copper armor, which we don’t have in the game, so it’s pretty cool. -It feels like the epic one. -Yeah. So we created a prototype to find ways to make each armor trim look unique enough so that it’s worth getting the different ones. I loved the first prototype very much, but I remember one thing about the naming. It was the Smithing Blueprint, And the word “blueprint” sounds very modern and technical and Minecraft should be more historical and fantasy, so I was like: “Maybe we can tweak it.” How do you feel about Smithing Template now? You still don’t like it? I think it’s much better, but… Yeah, naming is so hard. -It is difficult. Archaeology… -Archaeology. -Archaeology. -Archaeology. As with most features there are many answers as to why we should add it. And with archaeology, one thing is to deepen the mystery of the Minecraft world. So adding these hints to a forgotten past and that there was some kind of civilization living there… We don’t know who it was or what they did, but that’s for the players to tell stories about. The archaeology idea we’ve had for quite long, because we first made it for Caves and Cliffs. So we had something we call a gameplay summit, and then there was this Post-it on the wall In the room where we had the summit which said: “Archaeology.” Many of us felt like: “This is super exciting.” “We don’t know what it is yet, but it could be something very lovely for Minecraft.” You know, most of Minecraft is: “How can I make my shovel as fast as possible and mine as fast as possible?” We had to create a mechanic where we intentionally told the player: “You’re not going to be as fast as possible, otherwise you’re going to destroy things.” -That’s a difficult thing to do. -It should not feel annoying. It should feel slow in a nice and exciting way. But I think the stepwise reveal really helps with that. But we had some early prototypes where we tried out the stepwise reveal… We have a video here. And it was like, it gave us smiles, but it wasn’t the one we wanted to go with. When working on something for Minecraft there will always be bugs and weird things happening, which is quite fun. With the archaeology feature, One thing was when we were going to place the hidden room under the desert pyramid. We accidentally put it in the air instead. It was like: “Oh well, that was not intentional.” It looked like a little alien attack or something. I think working on Trails and Tales has been a really amazing experience. We really can’t wait to hear what everyone thinks. Okay, Brandon, I think we’ve talked a lot now. We should go and work on the next update. Video Information
