Minecraft 1.20 will not be the inventory update and this video is not a speculation video this is an argument an attempt to persuade and convince you and hopefully mo yang if they are listening that minecraft needs an inventory update you see i believe this game is in need Of a big change the system for managing your items was designed over a decade ago when far fewer blocks were included with a decade of development it has become outdated with the arrival of hundreds and hundreds of new blocks and items in this video we will discuss the Problems the reasoning and the ideas that could just make an inventory update possible first of all we need to identify the problem which you might think is simply inventory management i’d argue the problem is the barrier to a player’s own creativity in terms of time one of minecraft’s best aspects is the virtual Lego experience but what slows that down sorting through hundreds of blocks looking for the next one you need to place the same thing can take place in minecraft it’s a friction that slows unleashing one’s creative potential we all experience the awe and wonder of seeing fantastic builds that explore the Depths of our imagination where architecture and fantasy meet we all know these builds take time but if it took less time then surely even more can be achieved and thus the player’s experience would vastly improve think for a moment about some of the greatest minecraft builds you’ve seen They are made in both survival and creative in creative mode one can achieve so much more with their time and time is the essence of the problem even creative mode itself isn’t exactly optimized for speedy creativity with only 9 slots to pick from at a time the Best builds tend to utilize both a variety of similar and contrasting blocks of different shapes and sizes this easily exceeds nine blocks however an organized creative player using the hotbar swapping feature can do well with this limitation when it comes to details utilizing minecraft’s large selection of Non-full blocks then the amount of items quickly racks up and to think the amount of blocks and items will only increase as the game continues to update in survival mode the player needs an extra skill and ability to manage items but let’s face it organization is hard the inventory swiftly fills up with Items when adventuring and keeping track of all the blocks you gather and how to store them can be tough even with a good plan one will spend a lot of time organizing chests and items there are merits to be found here though a well organized ender chest or collection of Shulker boxes goes a long way don’t get me wrong this can be a lot of fun for some but for others the growing chess monsters and piles of unsorted junk becomes a tedious chore sure you can build extravagant redstone contraptions to aid the sorting process but let’s Face it these are out of range of the average minecrafter now it’s not all negatives when it comes to inventory management mojang has added some really cool features over time the offhand reduces switching back and forth on the hotbar shift-clicking stacks to a chest or crafting bench is handy you can also Shift double click to move all items at the same time at once the ability to drag and divide items is wonderful too and best of all middle clicking to pick a block you are looking at is fantastic what would be really cool is if you could do that at any distance because Moving around to get close to another block is another friction when building anyways let’s not go on another tangent on what else slows the player down hopefully now i’ve made the issue clear we want to reduce the friction when it comes to inventory management and smooth out the experience for the player so Less stands between you and your creativity but let’s face it this inventory change would be a big one this game was developed over multiple platforms like pocket edition bedrock multiple consoles and for a range of different user interfaces it’s not just keyboard and mouse but multiple controller types mobiles and Touchscreens too with that challenge in mind i am still going to present my ideas starting with simple small changes all the way up to big and dramatic ones that may not work on all editions of the game i’m not arguing that any one change should be in the game but let’s explore What’s possible as we need to not shy away from drastic changes now we are about to get stuck in with my suggestions but first i’ll encourage you to subscribe so you can catch my videos as i have more in the works like this one so if you’re enjoying it be sure to Subscribe alright then let’s jump into it simple idea number one we could use additional buttons on the controller or keys on the keyboard to activate slots that are outside the traditional inventory space so if i were to press one of those i could throw an ender pearl for example in the survival Inventory screen it would look something like this as you can see we’ve got three additional slots and as an example you could put food in one of them ender poles in another and even have the spy glass on hand so then rather scrolling through your hotbar or looking through Your inventory you just press the spy glass key and you’re ready to go and again without having to reach in your inventory if you’re hungry in need of some food you just have a button to press to hold down and eat and perhaps if this idea of adding additional Buttons or keys is unfavorable maybe a slot just to have specifically arrows in or maybe a passive item like a totem of undying would be a really cool way to get them out of your inventory space simple idea too here’s an idea what if every time you placed a block and you Had more in your inventory it would automatically replenish those place blocks so yeah i’ve placed three of each and they’ve been automatically moved out of here down to there and although it would save you a minuscule amount of time opening up your inventory to put a New stack on your hotbar it’s a really nice quality of life change simple idea free so this looks like a pretty regular hot bar for a survival player if we look into the inventory you might figure out that i’m out to do some landscaping and building with an interesting block Palette and we all know that very quickly this hot bar is going to become a complete jumble of blocks however what if we had a hotkey to simply swap them around like this i am simply rotating through the different rows that are already in my inventory and this would Be amazing for building no longer would you have to open up your inventory and swap things around you would save so much time just pressing this key to get to everything but not only that you could keep your stacks organized as i have done here with build gradients and Various materials you plan on using together and the mod that i found to showcase this also has another key where you can simply rotate through a single column inside of the inventory so it’s been swapping this one here around if i select a different one it will sort Through those simple idea four if you’ve ever played a mod pack you’ve probably seen this one it’s simple and beautiful for inventory management the ability to shift click and drag oh my goodness me that is such a time saver moving items between inventories and of course you Can get them back out again this way but now i’ve jumbled my inventory simple idea number five now i’ve already mentioned this but wouldn’t it be really cool if pick block worked at a distance you know you just middle click and even though it’s far away you could still Grab it currently you need to be in range of getting the outline on the block and then you can middle click it’s a very small but very simple thing that saves a little bit of time simple idea number six you’ve played this game long enough to know that your inventory can Turn into a disaster pretty darn easily but wouldn’t it be great to have a sort button just to sort them all into categories so that they’re grouped together i know i know it’s a very generic idea that we’ve seen lots of mods do over time but i think this video Wouldn’t be complete without worth mentioning that just having a couple of buttons to sort the blocks in different orders could really help you out another idea number one so this is one of my all-time favorite ideas for this game and that is to add enchantments to Shulker box we got one called refill and one called siphon so first we’re gonna focus on the siphon enchantment it doesn’t do anything to the size of the shulker box it changes its functionality so i’ve got a shovel we’re in a desert i’m going to come over here and pick up Some sand but what you’ll notice is that it’s not going into my inventory yet these other blocks over here will and that is because i already put some sand in this enchanted shulker box so if i drop down here and pick some of these up they’re going into the shulker box if i Place it over there then they go into my inventory now this can be especially great when you’re out gathering resources and we all know wherever you go there’s all these junk items that make their way into your inventory but now when we’re out here mining for sand And we accidentally get a cactus or some sticks from a dead bush they are not going to clutter our inventory they’re going to go straight into the shulker box and i just love how intuitive this is because it’s only going to put something in that already exists inside Of the shulker box and when that shulker box is full up all the way it’s no big deal you’ll just start picking up those items into your inventory again and just imagine this before you go out caving you fill up your shulker box with some very common blocks that you might find On the way and the oars that you’re looking for and that’s just gonna massively reduce the amount of inventory management you need to do on your adventures so i hope you haven’t forgot about the refill enchantment this one is probably self-explanatory but i’ll explain it anyway so let’s say you got a Grindy job to do you got a lake that needs filling in you’ve got to place down a lot of blocks and you can’t be bothered to keep grabbing extra stacks out of your inventory well as you’ve seen the items are coming out of this shulker box over here which is loaded Full of sand so as i place a block down it’s immediately pulled out of here this could be used for far more interesting things than just grinding out a build for example if you’re out adventuring you could automatically restock your food your ender pearls torches in caves And arrows for shooting baddies and then even non-stackable items could be replenished as well including the totem of undying and let’s actually go ahead and see that one in action aha look i’ve got another one down on the hotbar already and on second thought maybe this is a little bit overpowered maybe it Shouldn’t work with every single type of item right moderate idea number two so remember earlier in the video i proposed that we could have extra slots that could be activated by specific keys well what if that were all a function of the offhand feature where you can swap Something into your other hand but maybe you could have multiple items stashed away there as you can see i’ve got my spyglass my ender pearls and you could keep a whole bunch of other handy utilities here the totem of undying a compass shears flint and steel there are So many things that are useful but they just take up a lot of clutter in the inventory wouldn’t it be cool to have some dedicated slots to them that you could cycle through on your offhand moderate idea number three now this idea will be very similar to the last but Again it’s a common problem what is wrong with this hot bar down here there are a lot of items tools and weapons in this game that you might want to keep in your hotbar or inventory a lot of the time and it eats up a ton of space and This is very similar to the offhand idea but what if you had a primary slot maybe the first one in the hot bar that handled all of your different tools and weapons and they just had a place to go elsewhere in the inventory and then you could cycle through them in that single Slot so the more useful things there are in this game the more incentive you have to put it in your inventory and some solutions to this include mods like all-in-one tools where you combine all the different basic tools and weapons into a single tool that can do Everything now most of you are probably not a fan of this idea and neither am i really it doesn’t feel very minecraft to replace all those tools and items of a single thing but i gotta say from experience having used this all in one tool it is extremely convenient and it Shows that there is a problem that needs a solution advanced idea number one i’m starting to think putting these ideas into categories probably wasn’t the best of ideas because i know a lot of you are going to say this next one is really simple but i believe it’s a limitation Of how the game is actually coded that means you can’t go above 64 items so it’s advanced because it would need a lot of recoding to make it work but the idea that’s been thrown around plenty and plenty of times is increasing this and yes that is one million diamonds and Maybe that’s a little bit over the top but let’s discuss this idea so i prepared some stack sizes so you can get a feel for this visually 99 would keep the two numbers that’s the most that we could do and keep that the same size i personally prefer 999 i feel like once You go beyond this it starts to look a little too small and obviously some of the issues of having stack sizes like this is that they get abbreviated so as i add single blocks to this you then require the hover over to see how many are actually there now i’m not proposing We should up this to 1 million but i am 999 and the reason why is because when we drag this out into the traditional stack size you can get a sense of how much inventory space this would actually save it’s around 16 stacks so take a Look at the build in this area of hermitcraft season 7 and just think not only about moving all of the resources to this area to build it but gathering things as well you know sand and gravel need to be turned into concrete and this is just a lot of time spent moving items Around in your inventory and i really think this is an eloquent solution for building on mass because you’re able to condense just so much material down into a smaller space and of course this could be a problem when applied to everything you know having infinite stacks of food May not be the best thing for the game but at least for building blocks which you use on mass it makes so much sense advanced idea number two so in this game we have a lot of blocks that also have a lot of variations they tend to get the Same variations and more of these are going to be added in the future right we’ve got the fence gates trapdoors doors and pressure plates for different types of material and don’t get me wrong with this idea crafting is classic it should definitely remain a part of this Game but when there are so many different variations of a block that’s a lot of crafting to do and all of these different items again take up space in the inventory and this idea is radical what if we were to take the base material something like mangrove planks And then allow the player to actually just place the different types of them directly so for this one we probably need a new button to press to cycle through the different block types maybe there’s an indicator on screen maybe it could just put the text down at the Bottom and even though you’re holding the planks you’re actually placing the slabs as you can see in my hot bar we’ve got planks and yet i’m placing slabs here it is again with the fence for example just a straight one for one conversion so that you can Hold on to one stack of items and place many different block types i could go on and on with this but the point would be there’s a lot of blocks that you can place just from a single stack of items this way so yes all of these blocks from A single stack of items and i know what you’re gonna say this is madness you know a slab is literally half a block yet it would cost you a full block well with this idea that is quite simply a sacrifice that we would have to make now Think of this as a trade-off how many more block types could you carry around in your inventory just by having access to all of these different variations off of the base material and if a full block for a block of a different shape is too absurd then there’s plenty of blocks That are made out of another one which are the same size and could be used this way too it’s a big and drastic change but i can’t help but feel that’s exactly what this game needs when it comes to the inventory management advanced idea number three so this next one was not my Own idea but a mod that i found when i came across researching this video and i think it has a really fascinating use case that probably isn’t for storage it would be for these sorts of blocks the ones that have a gui an interface you could interact with and if you open up Your inventory you can see that there are now tabs for these blocks that are in range and this just makes it so much easier to do all the various things you can do with these blocks without having to shuffle your inventory around and move about two now the reason i think That this is not so great for storage is because sometimes you have a lot of it in the same place and this could quite possibly be seen as being way too overpowered but again this looks so convenient just to be able to access these things and move them about by Clicking on the tabs this is so much faster and more convenient than anything in vanilla minecraft and because there are so many containers here there’s like a back and forwards button on either side to shop for all of these i might be mistaken this is possibly exactly what minecraft needs it’s also a Client-side mod meaning you could use it on any old server and if we just press up here here you can see it gets a bit messy when you’ve got a lot of boxes and storage containers nearby one another but otherwise it’s pretty fantastic inventory expansion ideas so one of the most obvious solutions Could be to expand the inventory size but this doesn’t actually solve some of the problems at hand however i think it’s important to realize it’s definitely part of the equation and a really good way to show you how is to imagine playing the game with just nine Slots your hot bar imagine that that’s all you had access to you would spend so much more time traveling back and forth managing items between chests and this is a great argument for why having more space would free up more time for your creativity so let’s explore a couple of Ideas on how we could expand the inventory so if we were dead set on keeping these 27 slots here we could essentially add some left and right arrows on either side to scroll back and forth between the spaces of the inventory we can’t see but then of course that leaves some items not Visible when we open our inventory this is why i think it would be a great idea somewhere on the right here to add a search feature like you have for crafting recipes right you could type in what you’re looking for and then it could display those items for you in Your inventory space and when searching for mods that could help me show my ideas i found this one here which has a scroll bar so you can have a lot more inventory space and simply scroll up and down to get to those other blocks and again my argument for expanding the Inventory size is that you just wouldn’t have to take as many trips back and forth to drop off items after a journey or when you’re building something large and need tons of blocks this just saves you so much time so what’s my final argument this game needs an inventory overhaul and mo yang Shouldn’t shy away from radical changes minecraft’s inventory has charm and history but it is outdated and needs to play to the strengths of creativity and not to nostalgia life itself is not static change is the constant and if we do not adapt to our surroundings we get left behind that’s what’s happening here The inventory has not been adapting to the changing game which will continue to add plentiful amounts of new blocks with each update you’ll have your own opinions and takes on the current system but i ask you to think of them through this lens is inventory management a game And if so is its place here in minecraft i’d love to hear your thoughts so join the discussion and let me know in the comment box that’s all from me now on this topic so thanks for watching and i’ll see you in the next one Video Information
