Today me and my dear colleagues Chi and Flo… What’s up Minecrafters? [Laughter] …will talk about the upcoming 1.20 Update and go in-depth on some of some of the blocks we are adding in the update. It’s story time! [Laughter] One of the things in the 1.20 Update I’m very attached to [laughs] or maybe hanging on to? No, hang on to… I don’t know! – is the hanging signs. It’s supposed to be fun. The first little concept drawing for hanging signs actually came from my daughter. I asked her if she would think it would be fun to draw signs for Minecraft, like hanging signs and how they could look like and she got very excited, and I got very excited too, so we were just drawing together next to each other and it was very cozy day. So the hanging signs comes in three different variants, depending on where you place them. So if you place a hanging sign on… under a wide surface, you get the one with two chains. If you place it under a really narrow surface you get the Like triangle shape chain, and if you place it to the side of a block you get hanging signs hanging from a… uh wait, what’s it called? [Whispers] Plank! Oh, yes, yep, sorry! Hanging from a plank. If you didn’t care about bamboo before 1.20, now you will! The reason we implemented bamboo, actually it’s multiple reasons. The first one is we wanted to represent our players in a better way because bamboo is used in so many parts of the world, so it seemed quite obvious to, to yeah, to be able to use the bamboo we have in game and create With it and build with it, use it as a building material. You have custom fences so you can have like nice looking poles with it, same we couldn’t just like slap a texture on top of the fences we had to make them proper bamboo poles. With bamboo it was quite tricky to do the art for it and it was also an interesting challenge. So it started on paper, and then we tried out some shapes on the texture and then we refined them. We have limited space on the texture that needs to say it’s bamboo. It’s tileable horizontally and vertically, it should repeat nicely, so we have to hit a nice balance of simplicity, efficiency, and still looking nice. Initially we didn’t plan for the the side hanging sign to have a collision. You would be able to like walk through it like with other signs. But then when we were play testing the hanging signs we realized: wouldn’t it be super fun if you can walk on that narrow little plank that the sign hangs from? It could be fun for like parkour courses or things like that. So we decided to change it after that play test, because it it felt fun, and fun is important. I was working on the textures and quickly Chi and Marina came in and were like oh what if we actually had a raft instead of a regular boat? Yeah I remember that, yeah we quickly prototyped something like super simple. Just a boat with no walls. Yeah, Chi just tore down the sides of the boat to see what it would look like and then we refined it into a proper raft model. – Yeah. When we were testing the raft, we quickly put some animals on it Just to look at it, and yeah, it looks perfect, it looks nice! Yeah I remember you showed like a screenshot of a circle of rafts with animals on them, it was so lovely. [Laughs] We love the raft! We honestly do. And you know what I like to put in my bamboo house so it looks nice and cozy? [Drumroll] Which is a bookshelf! [Laughter] [Music] One cool thing about the chiseled bookshelves is that you can place a book in any slot you want in the bookshelf and it remembers that, which slot. And that allows a lot of like storytelling, it allows players to actually self-express. One of the cool ideas that players have is they can actually make art with bookshelves. Yeah, you can finally store your book with all your journey, your journals, your stories, inside this bookshelf and it would just be safe kept There… until someone destroys it. They can also be used as floors, as walls, as ceilings, and on top of that it allows you to create secret doors. Video Information
