Minecraft 1.20 Snapshot 23W07A – Archaeology, Sniffer, Cherry Blossom & More!

Welcome back to another Minecraft update video this is snapshot23w07a and it’s a big one for Minecraft 1.20 and if you’ve been following my channel for the Minecraft news then you’ll know that moyang have been teasing us with archeology the sniffer the cherry blossom biome and the

New wood type 2 and we are being spoiled we are getting all of these things and more in this snapshot but there is also some totally unexpected and really positive changes for Minecraft 1.19.4 because the development cycle does both of these things at the same

Time now so first of all we’re going to quickly get through the changes for 1.19 starting with jukeboxes which will now omit a signal strength of 15 when playing a record this is not to be confused of what the comparator does any record will now omit this signal

Strength and if you use a comparator you will get a signal strength that corresponds to the disc that you put in but here my friends is where things get interesting droppers and Hoppers can now interact with the Jukebox so from the top we can insert a disk from the right

Hand side or any side of the block and then from the bottom two if we just look inside you’ll see these are full of records and the other interaction type added is that of the hopper if I throw in a record from up the top here you’ll

See the record plays but it doesn’t get taken out of the bottom that’s the one thing I would like to see here I don’t think there is a way to automate taking the record out yet you know hitting it with a redstone signal doesn’t do

Anything and leave it as a hopper at the bottom these are very welcome changes that bring it to parity with the Bedrock edition of the game but like I just said I would love for us to have a way to pop the record out automatically too next up

A change to horse breeding that many of you who have tried to do this in this game to produce horses with good stats Will Rejoice at because the system has been overhauled if you do or do not know breeding two horses together makes a baby horse but the problem is it tends

To gravitate to the average statistics of its parent so so horses they have free statistics they’ve got their health this one has quite a lot they have a speed and then a jump height and the issue is if you have two fast parents you’re always far more likely to get a

Slower horse as the end result this means that you have to do a lot of breeding to create baby horses with good statistics now the change you’re about to see is a proposed fix for this bug and this is actually how moying have chosen to implement the fix so what

We’re able to do with this website is input the speed of two different horses and down below in the graph we can see the likelihood of the speed of the baby so red represents what will be the older versions of Minecraft and from this snapshot onwards you’ll see the results

In blue so if we adjust for two fast parents if we look at the graph you can see there was a bias previously to getting a slower Offspring whereas now it’s far more balanced towards a faster one and here’s what the likelihood looks like if you have two of the fastest

Horses in the game and if you were to breed the best and the worst together now if all of that stuff went over your head don’t worry the end result is essentially that horse breeding is now viable if you want to try and breed horses that have better statistics than

Going to summon one over here it’s simply called interaction if we take a step back and enable hitboxes then you can see it right here then if we use the data get command we can select this entity and reveal its secrets and at the moment here you won’t see there’s too

Much information but then if I go ahead and I punch this thing and I right click it can actually record those interactions so now when we run the command again we get more information because it’s stored the time and type of interaction so it’s a very powerful map

Display a player’s skin so now we get to move on to the Minecraft 1.20 features first of all the sniffer I’m holding a sniffer spawn egg not to be confused with the egg that they will hatch from we of course know this because of the mob vote video that was created for the

Sniffer for Minecraft live 2022 speaking of which it mentions that here on the web site and also notes that this is the first ancient mob added to the game the first of many I wonder and here it is the cute yet ginormous sniffer mob doing its thing sniffing out some ancient

Seeds and while this guy’s going straight for it right here uh-huh did you get some yes you did we’re gonna find out all about these a little later on now it’s important to note that the sniffer has no natural spawning location in the game the way you’re supposed to find this are with

The eggs that hatch and they’re supposed to be found in the suspicious sand blocks I think we’re also going to see later on but that’s not to be confused with this spawn egg which is for creative mode and you can make baby snifflets by right clicking on them like

This you can also do it by breeding them in survival using your torch flower seeds and these are passive friendly mobs that don’t attack the player even if you attack it first although it does flee away and don’t be cruel to these because they don’t even drop a lot of XP

You get between 0 and 3 XP orbs from them they can’t be tempted which means you can’t lure them with something and you can’t tame them like you would a horse or a pet they only have seven hearts of health and their hitbox is a little curious as much of the body is

Larger than it including their head that stick six are Fairways out now sound design is also a big deal in this game and we’ve already heard quite a few of the sniffers sounds but here is a list of all the different sounds it has for different events and the one that caught

My ear was happy yes quite unusual now these things dig up seeds rather frequently but I did try them in a couple of different biomes and I learned something rather interesting there are certain blocks in which it will seek out to sniff out those seeds there is a list in the game called

Sniffer diggable blocks and here you can see all of the blocks that it’s able to dig up the ancient seeds from and they also path into these blocks so all of these are going to make their way onto the grass in the middle and here it is a

Few moments later most of them are trying to climb on and some of them are already sniffing out some ancient seeds now you might be thinking this is easy put them all in a cage let them sniff up those seeds and you’ve got a farm the

Issue is every time a sniffer digs up a seed from a block it actually remembers that block through a memory called sniffer explored positions so if you needed a large quantity of these seeds it might be quite a challenge to actually make an automated farm and they

Also have a cool down after they find some seeds before they’ll go look for some more you have to wait eight minutes but then again if they’re capable of digging up all the blocks in a small area you could essentially breed new ones once the old ones become redundant

After they’ve dug up the entire area so it wouldn’t surprise me if we saw some Automation in the Minecraft Community with the sniffer real soon so now we’re going to move on to those ancient seeds which has always been referred to as plural the first one we’re seeing here

Is torch flower seeds which grows into the torch flower and this flower can be placed on all of those blocks that we just saw in a list a moment ago and it can also be potted however missed opportunity the torch flower does not emit light and torch it’s in its name I

Think it’d be really cool if it lit up as night came around and maybe emitted some particles but for now it’s just static it does have one unique property though it will survive an explosion notice how all of the flowers survived the blast now as you might suspect these

Seeds are planted on farmland and they have a total of free growth stages you can just see the three of them them at the back there I’ve also sped up the random tick speed so they can grow nice and fast you can also use bone mill on

These crops to speed them up as well it seems you always need to use it two times and right as I said that it didn’t work on two of them there you go seems like there’s a low percent chance that it might not actually make it grow now

You might be expecting that once you’ve got some of these you’ll be able to make some sort of torch flower farm but here’s the thing when you break this it drops one of itself it’s the same for the seeds too there isn’t really a way to duplicate these at the moment and

That could be because it’s still in development maybe the idea is just to make them a little rarer and a little special so for every torch flower you get that’s a sniffer that sniffed out some seeds for you and yes I did try this with a hoe and the fortune

Enchantment it doesn’t make a difference apart from being decorative the one other thing you can use this for is turning it into orange dye and at this point in the video I’m going to encourage you to subscribe because if you’re already subscribed to catch on our recent news video because you would

Different seeds again they have been referred to in the plural so I’ve got a feeling we’re going to see some more decorative plants so my friends it’s time to grab your brush and your shovel because we’re gonna go on an archaeological dig But first you may be

Wondering how do you craft the brush well it’s rather simple you’re only going to need sticks and string previously this would have required copper and so it seems moyang maybe changed their mind on this one but anyways you’ll need it to brush away these suspicious sand block which you’ll

Have to seek out in the world you hold down right click it goes through this little phase of different textures and then it converts to a sandblock however it would have gotten loot if I hadn’t placed this myself and the brush by the way only has 64 uses so we need to seek

Out suspicious sand and currently there are two places you can find that one of them being a desert temple and this structure has actually being modified there is now a new secret room you have to find and over on this corner there is some sand on the ground that we’re going

To dig away and as you can see it leads down here so we’ve got to be careful not to accidentally shovel away this suspicious sand here we want to hold on to that oh and I’m not sure if these blocks are affected by gravity the

Answer is yes and they will break so I can’t exactly say I was that careful I’ve only got three of these blocks left so we’ll hold down right click but this time you can see a little bit of the item that we’re going to get as Loot and

Brushing this in survival it also turns into a normal sand block so the first time we got gunpowder and this time we got our first Pottery Shard and this time we’re gonna get a diamond yes you can get diamonds from these now the other place you can find suspicious sand

At the moment is at the desert well and you’ll find it down here underneath the water and you actually get different loop from the suspicious sand that you find right here I also wanted to show you this little thing when you right click on it and then let go so the

Texture is going to sort of Shuffle back and the item goes back into the ground now as for the loot from the desert well you have an equal chance of getting the arms up Pottery Shard a brick and emerald a stick that’s the debug stick oh that was the Derp or a suspicious

Stew that can have night vision jump boost weakness blindness poison and saturation and again for the desert pyramid you have an equal chance of getting the other shards the archery prize skull and then there’s gunpowder TNT diamonds and emeralds and let’s just take a moment to appreciate how weird

The archery Pottery Shard is I mean the bow is the wrong way around right uh surely they’re gonna have to fix that they can’t stand so what are we going to do with these Pottery shards well we can use them to make decorated pots and that’s done like this using bricks but

That’ll only create a plain one if you want to put a pattern on the pottery then you have to swap in one of the pottery shards now notice how this piece corresponds to that side if we go and add the skull piece over on the the left

Will then sit on the decorated pot and of course we can put these other pieces on the back side now when we place this in the world we’ll see it like we do in our hot bar so the skull is on the left the Archer is on the right if we rotate

When we place it it also rotates and those pieces we chose for the back you can see are on the back side of it so you can make many combinations including some with plain faces on the side or entirely plain pots it’s all pretty straightforward but breaking these

Things is a little bit on the odd side at the moment so I’m going to assume this is a placeholder for the moment because when you punch it with your bare hand it just drops the pot as a whole which is fair enough but then when you

Use any type of tool it smashes it apart into the different fragments the block doesn’t seem to have too many other quirks it can be waterlogged when you place it down however if you right click it with a block of water it doesn’t seem to like that and the most important

Question of all is it blast resistant and I guess it’s a good time to mention that they don’t stack even if they’re exactly the same as one another and it feels to me like this one is still very much a working progress I reckon we’re

Going to see a few more things come to the archeology features and speaking of things being a work in progress we also got Minecraft preview for Bedrock edition of the game today and it does not include the cherry blossom biome which we’re about to check out next and

Because of that and everything else I could see in the changelog there wasn’t a reason for me to fire up the preview Edition as it’s got everything that the snapshot has and speaking of that cherry blossom biome it’s actually called Cherry Grove let’s head over there and

Check it out and while it’s taking me to the wimpiest smallest Cherry biome ever so this one is a much better example because it’s right next to a mountain and that’s actually where these biomes are going to generate they’re essentially in the same category as Meadows which generate up top on

Mountains so I think it’s a fair guess that where worlds once generated with Meadows they’ll now probably be shared with this type of biome too and first of all let’s take a moment to check out the tree generation these ones are rather large and bushy but the interesting

Detail is that the trunks will split up into large thick branches unlike any other Minecraft trees we’ve seen before and here is the sapling for the tree by the way it’s wildly different which I really like you can also place this sapling into a flower pot and having

Flown around and observed a few of these trees now it seems like it’s trunk branches they they extend on the single axis so you won’t find one that extends this direction whatever axis it chooses those branches seem to go out on either side and I’ve seen no more than three of

These branches with the main trunk in the middle sometimes they Branch out twice like this and every now and then just a lone one on its own also native to this biome are bees sheep and cows and you’ll find them generating in these trees have been a bit unlucky here but

Bees nests do generate with the cherry blossom tree and on the topic of the biome tints I think it does have a slight tint it’s hard to just judge based off of memory but there is a certain saturation to the leaves grass and water and inside the game’s data

Files you can see these colors have been applied to fog foliage and grass color oh and uh these ones too and as you would have seen there are particle effects that drip off the leaves and you can pick these up and place them elsewhere in the world for that effect

It looks gorgeous and you also would have noticed in this biome the one other feature are these the pink petals and there’s a few different varieties of them right well these work like candles you place down one and you get the first pattern click on it again for a second a

Third and a fourth so as I place more and more of them they start to look like a little bit of a grid right but here’s the thing you can also rotate your placements and now they’re in a slightly different axis so if I go over here it

Always starts with the one that’s in the bottom right based on the way that you’re facing so that means that there’s 16 different variations for how these can be placed down and if you want to farm them you can indeed bow Mill them but you can can continuously hold down

Right click and just get more and more of these so they’re very easy to farm now I’ve been in creative mode so I should point out that these are a little bit slow to punch with your hand but the default tool is the hoe which instant

Mines it now what about the cherry wood set as you can see this has been added as a full complement of blocks like other wood types would be and as far as I can tell they all sort of have the same functionality and behavior with the stripping of the blocks the rotation on

Placement and we’ve got some beautiful new designs for the trapdoor and door this applies to signs and hanging signs and so I’ve just thrown down a bunch of the variants here also if we take a look at them on a map they have some I think unique colors that have been added and

When it comes to sounds you can hear they’re slightly different let’s do that for the door and it’s essentially the same for all block types flanks two all of that’s pretty cool and when it comes to things like the mining speed of the blocks they seem to be exactly the

Same as regular wood they are also flammable there’s no fire immunity going on here that I can see they can also be used as fuel but these materials are not compostable but what about those pink pedals yes look at that they can be composted as can the sapling now the
