Hello I’m up here x toy cat and Mojang just did something unexpected by releasing a brand new beta and snapshot on a Thursday but also by including mostly not just gameplay features but outside the game features like a brand new play screen for Minecraft Bedrock or A brand new way you can be banned for having an inappropriate skin or an inappropriate name on Minecraft Java Edition these are of course controversial changes and Lord knows the job Edition Community doesn’t have enough of those in online multiplayer so let’s actually talk about what is inside The snapshot and beta and why exactly they’re doing it because that’s the important thing to say and we’ll start with the Java Edition today where they are releasing snapshot 23 w33a or 1.19.1 the sequel in terms of the community reaction you might say but with that said it’s called that because it’s the First snapshot in the 33rd week of 2023 and what exactly is found inside of it besides the big controversy let’s go down and let’s explain that now so first things first it does have to be said that this is a snapshot that is working on 1.20.2 so the next minor update it is Mostly fixing bugs so sponges and wet sponges now have their own sounds which is interesting right here is the sponge sound as we break this one and here is the wet sponge sound as you can see there’s a slight difference in how long that sound goes On for it makes sense to me that you should know just not only by looking but also by sounds which one is worse sponge and which one is where this is a pure Improvement just like how it’s a pure Improvement to have a narrator hotkey so Control plus b is what this is by default this allows you to turn on the narrator which is really interesting you can also set it to chat only or you can set it to uh system only or you can turn it off using Ctrl B you can also change This hotkey or turn it off altogether by going to options accessibility and all the way in the bottom right is allowing the narrator to be togged off with control plus b this is a fun little addition and it’s pure accessibility I think in general accessibility is purely A great thing for games when it doesn’t intrude with everyone else or even better when it adds to everyone else’s experience I think the narrator is really fun and I think that’s what they’ve done in this case speaking of what they’ve done in this case there is A new player reporting category oh you know should we should we talk about a various technical changes to mobs instead did you know mobs are now able to reach you based on the distance between that mob and your head not any point it used to be based on a specific Point in that mob now any point in that mob can be close enough to your head it will be able to damage you this is a substantial change and honestly the implications of it are hard to say just from that one uh wording but it is worth mentioning after this update you’ll see A slight change in how mobs hit you but you’ll also see a player on how players hit you do you know how some people take it upon themselves to work out where someone lives and Report you know I go for ridiculous lengths to be mean to People online well one of those fun ways you might say if you’re acidic is that now you can report people uh not just for uh you know one entry point General but also for their skin and their username it’s not enough to have an offensive something in chat or offensive Behavior you’re also now allowed to report people for having offensive names and skins and uh you know to be fair this sounds really bad on paper but officially the response to having an offensive name is that Minecraft will ban your name make it unavailable for any other players and when you next log In you’ll be asked to change your name and if you have an inappropriate skin let’s say you have a as your skin that’s not okay you can’t can I say that in Minecraft video Let’s just say that you know you have a ridiculous uh look at you know ridiculously good looking as your skin uh but if that was the case you might get in some trouble with someone online who says hey that’s not okay and so if that was an inappropriate skin and a Mojang staff member agreed they would ban your skin reverting you to the default skin and Asking you nicely to pick another one so this isn’t that controversial on the surface I would say taking away people’s long-eared names if they happen to be offensive is a little bit on the questionable side but the thing where this uh gets questionable is where it leads to bands so if you repeatedly Break the skin rule if you continuously make new skins or if your skin is egregious enough or your username is egregious enough Mojang has the right to just ban your account they say they in fact totally will and that’s where this gets a bit more controversial should Mojang have the ability to ban accounts for playing online on private servers you know these aren’t Mojang controlled servers with offensive skins they own the Skins they on the they might even own the server right and is that okay that they can be banned and this is Where the whole 1.19.1 stuff comes in I I think we can dive into this more later but it is where the kind of toxicity from it all comes from but it is basically Mojang going from a decentralized approach to a centralized approach they are now saying that it is Our issue if you play on a private server with an offensive skin and I think that’s an interesting one but you know what else is interesting several bug fixes including one from 2012. so I’ll show all the bug fixes on screen right now it’s all usual um but I think Before we dive into the whole what is Mojang doing here we should also talk about what’s going on on the Bedrock Edition because I do think there is a real world about well there’s a really good reason why Mojang needs to do this but I also think there’s a really Interesting reason that Mojang would change their menu screen which they have done in the Bedrock equivalent of the snapshots these are called betas or previews in this case we’re in 1.20.30.22 the preview which includes a Brand’s new menu and this is what the current menu looks like for Minecraft Bedrock as you can see you’ve got worlds friends servers and it’s a big list going down it’s existed this way forever and I don’t think anyone loves it people just kind of put up with it um and the most interesting thing is when you create new world instead of going Straight to the world select screen it says which Marketplace template would you like to buy maybe and I think that’s a bit of a weird thing for someone making a new world and so a really good Improvement that isn’t just solely all about how can we drive more people to The marketplace is this new create new world button where create new world and Worlds by creators are separated over here so when I just want to start a new world we just press the button and we’re there if I do want to play a world from creators we can find that button right Here and it’s wonderful but even more interestingly there’s also this import World option this allows you to take an MC World file which you’ve downloaded and it makes it even easier to put it into Minecraft because you don’t have to double click it you can press the button It loads up your Windows File Explorer and then you can put that world straight into the game so for example let me take my super flat uh 49 which I have right over here I I I don’t think I have super flat 50. I’m worried there’s some Changes but now you can see super flat but its back has been imported without me having to do anything outside of Minecraft that’s pretty cool you’ll also be able to see Realms and servers here and in general I do like this more than the old UI mostly because again if I’m Playing Marketplace worlds I know I’m there but when I want to just make a new world I know I’m pressing this button already also something I think is interesting are these flags which it has in other words and also the fact that you can see so many at once uh you know I used to have a thousand worlds wait how many worlds I have six worlds now I used to have over a thousand and being able to scroll four at a time and see the pictures in big screens would really help me know what I’m actually looking For and I know that’s a niche case but most people do have more than four worlds so seeing them all at the same time is a great movement towards the old UI from I think literally five years ago now speaking of things from five years ago let’s go into mine the 1.21 preview World which will remind me is in fact a experimental world with that new UI and let me show you the other changes they made in this particular preview um because they did make an announcement obviously I’ll tell you about this while the world loads up they made an Announcement that 1.20.20 one 2020 would in fact be skipped this is a really interesting change for them to make um because uh it’s been a while since we skipped to 20 update but this means that yeah we are going straight from 1.20.10 to 1.20.30 we were expecting the one 2020 update this week or next week but now we’ll have to wait until perhaps the end of the month for 1.20.30 I would say next week or the week after is very very unlikely and so when will we receive that uh who knows for sure but they’ve Decided to just skip it all together which is a very intriguing move the good news at least is that when it does come out 1 2030 will be a bigger than a normal moderate update because it will basically include two speaking of basically including two what is found Inside of it well the first thing is the calibrated stock sensor it used to be that when it was active the big Crystal would not glow with the rest of it but now in fact it will which is really handy for people who use this item just Like how you might enjoy terracotta so this is terracotta or your red terracotta green terracotta I used it to make big salmon I hope you enjoy but this is only what it’s been called in the game Sorry my lobster roll is arriving one sec moments later sorry that was an incredibly important Delivery speaking of incredibly for important deliveries I think it’s important to mention that although it’s called terracotta in the game it was called stained hardened clay in the commands which is real weird and if you want it if you did type that in you’d get this by default if you wanted a Black stained hardened clay or a red stained hot and Clay you had to type in this whole painful command which was just so much effort and now in 1.20.30 you type in sash set block and then you type in the exact same clay you want so If we type in a stained uh clay or rubber you can actually type in the Terracotta event wow that is uh life-changing right there now you can just type in slash black terracotta and it’s sold if you wanted to have red terracotta you wouldn’t have to type in The command super specifically you just type in red terracotta and correctly and boom now you can actually do that what a wonderful change speaking of wonderful changes this one is small but when you fire a crossbow that is when you’re meant to be using durability but there’s Been a bug in Minecraft Bedrock where when you draw it back that’s instead where the bureaucracy is used this means that if you had the last shot on your crossbow your crossbow would break before you could actually fire it which would be a waste of your last Arrow Obviously but if you want to shoot sniffers you Monster by the way you can now well you know it’s fine I miss if you want to shoot sniffers now you can do that speaking of things you can now do so this slash that block command can Be used for a lot of things but one of the interesting ones is you can place down hanging signs so I’ll place down a hanging sign of the uh I don’t know the the bamboo variety right here it makes you crouch which I think is kind of fun But as you can see this is the hanging sign with the correct hitbox um but in 1.20.20 and before um it would actually have the really wide hitbox which is really odd and that’s something they fix so yeah it’s a bug fix update it fixes all sorts of Even smaller things than this it’s also added a bunch of new Creator features to the pipeline and also they’ve decided to make the recipe unlocking now a d default part of the game it is turned on by default it’s not just there it will be turned on by default and so 12030 Come when 12030 comes out you will now have to do that by default which makes it quite a big update add in all the block breaking and all of that and you’ve got yourself a surprisingly sized update which again I do think it’s weird they combine them together I was Absolutely sure that 1.2020 would be releasing this week and I do imagine that was the plan that they changed for various reasons but it means that I have a whole I I was planning because usually when updates come out uh you’re like this early it means that there’s this Weird delay between me going through the update and having the video so this time we made sure we got everything that was going to be in the update and indeed I think we did a great job I made the video and it was ready to go right off We confirmed the update was out and I had all the features we were ready to change it if we needed to but despite making the entire video 1.20.20 is just being skipped and so uh for members I’ll release a news video for the update that never was because yeah that’s now a Thing that I have which is kind of ridiculous I think that’s the weirdest member exclusive we’ve ever had on the channel it has to be said do you want to see a news video for an update that never came out because uh boy do we have the best membership club on this channel Uh but for real there are all sorts of benefits and it’s also a great way to support a channel you care about speaking of supporting channels that you care about um something that I think Mojang needs to do is really respect the community’s attitude towards various enforcement Attitudes and this is where I think there are issues with the new skin and uh you know like name changes which it does have to be said just 100 right now right here are not exactly what they should have been doing I think Mojang you know like ignoring the liability Aspect of it which we do need to sign in so Mojang is doing something that is unpopular and that is always a sign for change I don’t think it’s going to be as unpopular as these memes seem to suggest but you know it does go to say that like Yeah this is an update that Mojang is getting some Flack for and we’ll get some flak 4 and to me that’s a sign that they should engage better with the community but I also think that a lot of the community don’t appreciate that Mojang aren’t just trying to be evil They’re not just trying to sit out there like how can we ruin people people’s days I think there actively are reasons why they need release updates like this and the biggest one is legal liability you can claim that third-party servers are private or you like but when you’re The largest video game on the planet and you have servers which basically function as parts of the gamers things like Hypixel very much do um you can’t really argue anymore that the skins that you use on those are nothing to do with Minecraft especially when you’re uploading people to upload Those skins so I think the skins in the names are real legal liability for Mojang which they could totally take on but this could equate to you know millions or hundreds of millions of dollars in particular us cases of someone sues for bad enough emotional damages I don’t actually know the extent Of this but there is real concerns that I’m sure all sorts of regulatory bodies have thrown Mojang’s way and basically every big company when they’re confronted with this just goes okay please don’t mess with us we just we’ll make the tiny changes you like if you Really have to and uh whether that’s for good or for bad depends on your but I guess your opinion of regulatory bodies and the legal systems and the country you live in but it mostly comes down to in the United States it is a very very big deal and so it’s something Microsoft Is kind of getting in front of I do think however there are better ways to handle this one is to make very clear guidelines and what is and isn’t allowed but obviously bojang has the fear that if they do this people might take advantage but if you make clear Guidelines and those guidelines should be read by a reasonable person as Banning things which are explicit but not Banning things like cats or sniffers then I think you’ll be totally fine I think there is a real gray area in having such broad enforcement terms and saying Mojang staff will decide because Is a Frontline Mojang employee actually the right person to decide whether a skin or username is appropriate can they tell if that username is a fun joke that goes back years or do they just you know like it’s really weird it’s easy for them to be overzealous or overlax and Given that it’s a company trying to reduce their liability they’re more likely to be overzealous and this is the problem I think Mojang needs to address Mojang has a clear trust issue with the community which is something only they can fix but I think the obvious a part Of this that causes people a lot of concern is Minecraft needs to just tell people very honestly what age are you intending Minecraft to be for when you make changes like this um Mojang says both times uh they say like oh Minecraft is designed to be played by players of All ages and then sometimes they’re like we have a very young player base we have to look after which one of those two things is it that you’re prioritizing when you’re coming down on skins do you need every skin to be visible by a three-year-old with no accompaniment by Parents or do you need to admit that yeah actually we think players below a certain age should only play if they have their parents permission and they understand what they might be getting into in multiplayer there’s that big message that already says multiplayer not rated by the SRB is there anything More they have to do I think uh just being honest about the actual guidelines of what’s not okay would be important too um obviously a giant male genitalia skin might be too much to do on a public server where children are around uh but maybe just having a slightly political Themed skin that is maybe against the political wishes of whoever at Mojang is doing the enforcement that is something people would feel differently about and these are the important questions that someone at Mojang needs to be answering ahead of time rather than claiming wow there’s nothing we could have done we Just want to keep people safe because keeping people safe in a way that they don’t know or understand or really even can you know there’s not even a clear description of what is where I think people have issues with that said though I think this is a relatively minor thing Loads of people said no one would play Minecraft after 1.19.1 uh Microsoft has proven that like yeah ultimately people love Minecraft so much that all these uh outrages are just small internet outrages and the most important thing is making Minecraft better with the next update whether that be 1.20.2 and 1.20 1.1 Um at 1.21.0 I guess um and uh yeah those are the things that are kind of exciting people but it’s nice to see these small changes being made as well about with the sponges uh whether it’s sponges or whether it’s the uh the way that you can refer to terracotta now Directly in the Bedrock menu no idea why it was all merged before but I’d like I’d love to see these tiny changes that make Minecraft a bit better day by day and I guess I’m looking forward to 1.20 point 30 now anyway um by the way I I Wasn’t joking when I said it was a lobster roll delivery um it’s a good looking one too I’m gonna go eat this now it’s gonna be a good day for me
