Sorter can’t quite keep up so i built this fairly standard item sorter here that uses hoppers with various different filters to filter out the items from this hopper line up above the problem with this is that it transports items at hopper speed which is just a little bit too slow for me and A little bit too slow for some of my automatic farms so a simple solution you might be thinking well just replace the hopper line up here with the water transport line and some blocks of ice Well that’s exactly what we’ve got right here so it’s the same exact hopper filter setup as the one below only this one has a water transport system instead of a hopper line up above as well as a Dropper here running at roughly hopper speed to insert items into the line we can go ahead and place some items in here and you can see they certainly do travel through the system faster than hoppers but they don’t actually get processed by the sorter any faster than the system down below And it doesn’t actually process the items here any faster than a hopper would so we’re still waiting the same amount of time for all our items to make it into the system so then you might be thinking okay simple solution once again just use a faster clock so we can insert items into The system faster and that’s exactly what i’ve done up here so this is once again the same system same filter only this time we’ve used a faster clock on the dropper back here So i can put some items in here again i’ll put a couple stacks of redstone in this time and you see they do go through much faster but if we look inside the filter is slowly going up and Eventually that’s going to hit 64 and when it does the items are going to skip right past that hopper and they’re going to go right into the overflow chest right here and we can actually see that We’ve got several items in the overflow chest now out of 64. actually out of 128 we’ve got 42 that did not make it through the filter in addition you might have seen that the item sometimes skipped Over the hopper before it clogged up and that’s because the hoppers can only pick up items so fast and sometimes the items travel past the hopper quicker than it can actually pick them up so what i’ve done is i’ve replaced these hoppers here with hopper mine carts now these are capable Of transferring items eight times faster than a regular hopper now this is a two wide tileable version which allows us to use four hoppers for the output chest this means that this can output to this chest four times faster than this system and it can accept items at the input up to eight Times faster than this system over there and i’ve also created a one wide tileable version here it works pretty much the same way only there’s a single hopper going to the output chest so it does output at the same speed as the hopper systems over there but it still has the capability of Accepting items up to eight times faster and this version is considerably smaller and cheaper to build than the two wide version in fact if we come up here we can see just how big these systems are This is five modules of the two wide tileable version and this is five modules of the one wide tileable version so you can see that the one wide version is significantly smaller it’s actually the same size as the hopper system we were using over there and we’re using the same water line with The faster clock on the dropper here and i can demonstrate here just how well this system works i’m going to throw in two stacks of redstone again like we did before we’ll come over here and you’ll see that all of them are getting picked up right here above our redstone filter None of them are actually skipping past because the hopper mine carts can pick items up faster and you’ll notice that the redstone never really approaches 64 items because it’s able to transmit those items much much faster to the hopper mine cart below it and because it outputs four times Faster we can see here that it is basically already done if we go to the output chest no redstone there and this system is so fast that we can actually put a second dropper in so now we have two droppers running on this faster clock which is the equivalent of about four times Hopper speed total so we can place some items in here i’m gonna go ahead and put in two stacks there and i’ll put two stacks in here so now we’re processing four stacks of redstone and we’ll come over here and take a look and once again you can see that they’re all getting Picked up none of them are skipping past and if we look at the filter here you can see it’s processing the items extremely quickly and it’s never really getting close to 64 like you would see with just a regular hopper only downside of course to this one wide version is the output is Just as slow as the hopper system over there and there is a buffer that you have to be aware of but there is a trick to increase this buffer to reduce the risk of clogging and i’ll show you How to do that but first let’s go ahead and head on over to my lab world and i’ll show you how to build both of these items orders okay so here we are in my lab world and these are fairly simple To build we’re going to go ahead and start with the two wide version so what you want to do is just place down a double chest and we’re going to cover the top with hoppers and then the back we Want hoppers pointing in there and then make sure that you place hoppers above these two separately so you see we have four separate lines of hoppers this next parts just a tiny bit trickier you just Place down any type of rail put a hopper mine cart on top of that and then you need to break the rail and then hop up here and just push the minecart very carefully until it’s over top of all four Hoppers it doesn’t have to be perfect if you hold down f3 and press b you can see the hit boxes as long as that white hitbox outline there is above all four hoppers you are good to go once You’ve got that hopper mine cart there next thing you want to do is place a solid block next to the hopper and then we’re gonna place a couple more just like that grab any type of gravity block So this could be concrete powder sand or gravel and you’re going to want to place that right there and that’s going to fall we’re going to do the same thing on this block right here and if you Want you can cover the whole thing but really you just need these two blocks i’m gonna go ahead and cover the whole thing just so it looks pretty and now with that we’re gonna place a solid block at The front left right there and we’re going to go ahead and place another one on that temporarily so we can place a top slab right there i’ll go ahead and break that solid block should look like that place another solid block behind that slab we’re going to place Two more so we get three of them underneath the middle one here place another one and then two more so we have three of them again and then one more underneath the middle one again so you have this like diagonal shape here and then just break out that middle block right there with That done the next thing we’re going to do is come on up here and place an activator rail right there place another activator rail right there and then finally place a detector rail right there so what should happen is this detector rails facing this way this activator Rail should be on an incline and then what we need to do is break this activator rail place another block right there then an activator rail here and here and then break this one and this block doing it that way allows us to make an activator rail face that way without connecting up To either of these two now we need to place any type of wall above this activator rail and then we can grab our hopper mine carts and we’re gonna place one on this inclined activator rail and it should just stay there right like that this block is holding it in place We’re gonna place one up top on the detector rail and we’re going to give it a bump once you bump it it should fall just like that and it’s going to be sitting at incline that guy has to be on an Incline in order to feed this guy because he’s on an incline this guy is going to feed that hopper in the middle that we placed earlier and that’s going to feed all four hoppers at the same time So now we can go ahead and do some redstone this is very very basic you just need a comparator coming off of that detector rail and then three pieces of redstone dust just like that a repeater inside this little hole facing the hopper mine carts and a torch redstone torch On that block right there that’s going to activate this activator rail which is going to prevent the hopper mine cart from transferring items down now in this upper minecart you’re going to want to right click on that and we’re going to set a filter so use any Block that’s not going to go into your sorter system i recommend actually renaming the blocks so that they can never stack with anything you put in i’m just going to use these quartz blocks here In this first slot you’re going to want to put in the item you actually want to sort in this case i’ll put in some redstone and it’s going to start transferring down just like that and it’ll stop When it reaches a certain level and what’s going to happen is when enough redstone comes in here this piece of dust here will power powering this repeater de-powering the torch unlocking the hopper minecart transferring the items down until the level is low enough that this redstone turns Off this torch turns back on re-locks the hopper minecart and stops transferring items basically works exactly the same as any hopper item sorter we’re just using hopper mine carts instead so for the one wide version we’re going to do the same thing we’re going to place down a double chest Except this time we want it to be sideways we’re going to place a hopper on this back side here pointing into the chest then we’re going to place a solid block above the hopper and a slab Top slab against that now we can go ahead and place another solid block above this top slab and we’re going to place the top slab again right there like that so it should look like that now go ahead and break these two solid blocks and we’re going To place three solid blocks against that slab come underneath place three more from the middle here like so and then one more at the bottom and break out that middle piece right there and now we can come over here place our activator rail facing the slab on top of the hopper Place another one on top of the slab and then place your detector rail on the top just like before so now we have our inclined activator rail we’re going to place another slab here break that activator rail place another one here and here and break this one and this slab Same thing as before inclined activator rail activator rail facing that way detector rail on the top facing that way now we can go ahead and place our hopper mine cart down here just like that place our wall block above this activator rail place another hopper minecart up Top and give it a bump see same thing as that one we’re just skipping all the hoppers at the bottom so we can go ahead and do the redstone again here same process as before so you can see it A second time comparator dust dust dust repeater and torch and then throw your filter items in the last four slots here and the item that you want to filter in the first slot and that’s the one Wide version done okay now i’ll show you the trick to increasing the buffer size between the filter hopper minecart up top and the output hopper down below all you have to do is grab a hopper minecart Look at the rail here and right click and now we have two hopper mine carts on the same rail this gives us 10 total inventory slots of space since each one has five helping to prevent any clogs since there’s some more inventory slots that can be used up while items are filtering Down through the hopper below you can also do this on the two wide version it doesn’t need it as much because it does have four hoppers pulling items at once but you certainly can just pop another hopper minecart on there if you are concerned about any potential clogging Unfortunately you can’t really add more than the two hopper mine carts that are on here because once you go above that it starts to pull items out of the filter my cart faster than the system can lock everything up so it ends up draining all of the items and breaking the filter So you are limited to just two hopper mine carts of buffer space here and just to demonstrate i’ll throw some redstone in here and you’ll see that it’ll go all the way down to two so if we added Another hopper minecart in there it would drain out the rest of the items so a couple of tips when you’re building a bunch of these side by side leave this back block off so you just want to Build the little t here and then the bottom here so you can place all of your repeaters before putting on this back block just makes things a little bit easier and also when it Comes to the rails make sure you place the rail on this slab first that way when you place this rail on the hopper it connects up like so instead of connecting to the uh hopper Rail next to it and then of course you can just place your uh detector rail up top like that and if you’re doing a whole line of them what you can do is place the bottom line first like so Then place your detector rails like so then add your extra block break all these guys and starting from this end work your way down just like that and get rid of your extra block just makes things a lot easier and when you place multiple walls You’ll notice that these mine carts when you bump them down the ones in the middle go down a little bit further and that’s just because the walls a little bit thinner there it’s not going to hurt anything so don’t even worry about that And a couple of things i’d like to talk about regarding the water stream first of all the hopper mine carts if you look at their hit boxes here you can see that they are slightly under This block here that the wall is under and they don’t cover the whole block under the ice here for that reason i recommend aligning your items to the center where these two blocks meet you can Do that using a chest it’s very simple when the items come down they hit the chest and then they all get stuck to this side here when they travel and that just ensures that they’re in the pickup Range of the hopper minecarts another thing to take note of is the item speed it is possible that they can pick up so much speed on this ice that even the hopper mine carts can’t pick them up for that reason i recommend making sure your water streams are only about five blocks long So in this case we have one two three four um you could maybe get away with five there and by doing that it kind of resets their speed just a little bit whenever they hit the empty block here and I like to use trap doors for this just because it gives a lot of clearance underneath for the items to travel through and if you’re not using two droppers like this which you totally don’t have to do i would actually recommend having two separate droppers with their own clocks i would Definitely recommend you put a trapdoor in front of your dropper as well like that that keeps the items from being shot up into the air where they can land on the glass so instead They hit this trap door and they stay nice and low and end up in the water stream every time and also when you place this chest here to align your items i recommend starting a new stream in front of it Just like this that way it just helps to keep items from kind of going diagonally through here which is something i have noticed can happen if this water bends around the corner the items can actually travel diagonally and end up slipping right past the chest and getting stuck here so By just starting a new water source in front of the chest like that we help avoid that problem since they collide with the chest before moving in this direction and that’s it i really hope you liked the video if you did please click that like button subscribe if you haven’t done so already And if you have any questions or concerns or if you’ve come up with any ways to improve on this item sorter definitely let me know in the comment section down below and i’d love to see you guys Use this in your build so if you do feel free to take a screenshot and post it to my discord server at This video, titled ‘How to build 8x faster item sorters WITHOUT clogging! ✨ Minecraft Tutorial | Tileable | Minecarts’, was uploaded by BlackBeltPanda on 2021-08-28 18:57:50. It has garnered 145223 views and 4117 likes. The duration of the video is 00:18:30 or 1110 seconds.
This video shows you how you can drastically speed up your automatic item sorters by using hopper minecarts instead of hoppers.
There are two different versions of faster item sorters in this tutorial that I’ll show you how to build and you can easily use them in your item storage systems. Both versions can accept items 8x faster than hoppers normally can and both are tileable.
The first item sorter is 2 blocks wide and outputs items to a storage chest 4x faster than a single hopper.
The second item sorter is 1 block wide and outputs items to a storage chest at regular hopper speed.
These item sorters rely on using hopper minecarts instead of hoppers. The hopper minecarts can grab items from a water stream above them and transport them much faster. I’ll show you how you can manipulate their placement to transport from one hopper minecart to another vertically, and how you can output to 4 hoppers at once with a single hopper minecart.
Neither of the item sorters use much redstone at all and are very similar in design to the typical automatic item sorters that have been in use for some time.
These systems require you to insert items into the sorting system faster, so it’s best to use them with droppers powered by observer clocks spitting items into a water stream. I recommend 2 or 3 droppers inserting items for the most stable operation.
I also cover some tips and tricks at the end, including how to increase the buffer of the 1-wide item sorting system by placing two hopper minecarts on a single rail, so be sure to watch until then!
