Right now kids from all over our area are sharpening their stem skills through video games. News Watch 16’s Jack Culkin took a look at this week’s Minecraft camp at Lackawanna College. Some people may not think of video games as being educational, but that’s the case this week at Lackawanna College. The college is esports program, partnered with the SEIU to hold its fourth Minecraft camp in downtown Scranton. Jake Gower calls himself an experienced Minecraft player. He says the camp still surprises him with new tips and tricks, so there’s a lot that I know. But there’s also a lot that I don’t know, And a lot of stuff that I don’t know. They are teaching me here at camp. The program runs for five days and focuses on building the camper stem skills all through playing Minecraft. The the beauty of the Minecraft educational edition is that there are tons and tons of pre built lessons In math and science and chemistry and all sorts of different things. We can go into these lessons with specific number of kids. They create these paths you know along the way throughout these huge, diverse worlds and every stop has a different lesson. The kids travel through different game maps, Learning about things like fossils. Ecosystem, and even how to build a rocket ship. Some activities required. Group work. Allowing for the gamers to get to know one another all through playing video games. Taught me teamwork skills and all that stuff so everyone’s working together like hey, this guy will get this and This guy will get that and then everyone else is working together. I’ve had a very fun time here and this year I’ve made five friends, some campers even want to teach what they’ve learned to others. How to bike play the whole game like mine would get diamonds, Beat the Ender Dragon then and then. Maybe one day they would help someone else like I wouldn’t.
