Finally got to the point where I can start working on a minecraft style terrain engine. Actually Minecraft is the primary reason why I decided to learn 3D programming. Its terrain engine is just awesome. Anyhow, considering the fact that a week ago I knew absolutely nothing about this 3D stuff I think I’m doing fairly good.
These are 256 “chunks”, each chunk having 16*128*16 blocks. Just testing the performance at the moment. It’s nearly acceptable. It runs at 40-50 FPS on my 4870 and that’s with no optimizations apart from some basic batching and a simple index buffer. No occlusion culling, hardware instancing or other tricks.
PS: yes, i borrowed the minecraft texture but that’s just for testing. And nope I’m not trying to clone the game. Just its amazing terrain engine and generator =)
