Players are now being permanently banned from Minecraft for griefing and this is causing controversy in the game’s Community it’s gotten so much traction that even Notch the original creator of Minecraft has commented on it the reason these bands are causing an uproar is because some are claiming that the Griefers haven’t actually broken Minecraft’s rules and that by Banning them Mojang is potentially violating their own Eula others are saying that the Griefers deserved these bands because what they were doing was borderline harassment which is a bannable offense under Microsoft’s rules it’s a very complex situation but these bands have major ramifications for the Minecraft Community because instead of using their in-game systems it’s the first time that I’m aware of that Mojang has banned accounts by going off of footage and screenshots both of which can potentially be faked so here’s what’s going to happen today will this discuss the entire timeline of events Start to finish that led up to these Griefers being banned we’ll go over the individual bands in detail including the parts that have made some people upset and once I’ve presented all of the information to you you can decide for yourself whether the bands against these Griefers were Justified or not in this Breaking story when I wasn’t investigating this Minecraft griefing I was in the gym where I always rock order it’s a great way to support the channel and thanks again to raycon for sponsoring today’s video so let’s cover the events from the Beginning for the past few years one of the most notorious Minecraft griefing groups has been the fifth column originating from the oldest Anarchy server in Minecraft 2b2t these Griefers have blown up countless Minecraft servers by utilizing a custom program called project copenheimer they’ve been able to scan the entire internet for Open Minecraft servers and index all of them from there they would grief servers that were not whitelisted since for some reason Minecraft servers have player whitelist off by default they spent the better part of a year grieving the servers of public schools universities churches and other real world Organizations they were also capable of targeting specific Minecraft usernames which allowed them to go after people like twitch streamers and YouTubers this is when Mojang first became aware of their activities they specifically added a feature in the Java Edition allowing players to hide their usernames while playing on servers while this did help The fifth column was able to continue griefing servers for a long time after this now fast forward to within the past month the group went on a spree where they managed to grieve 50 twitch streamers in less than a week as you could imagine they once again caught the Attention of Mojang one morning many of the Griefers woke up to find that they had been banned from the Java edition of Minecraft with the reason being harassment slash bullying dozens of accounts were affected they could no longer join multiplayer servers or Realms in any version of the game the Band duration was over 4 000 days or roughly 12 years the regular band durations are three days seven days 14 days and permanent which means this was a custom band duration just for these Griefers this isn’t really that surprising since harassment is in Microsoft’s reasons of why someone can Potentially be banned and I think many would agree that what the fifth column was doing was pretty much that this is the first major bandwave of Griefers in the Java Edition at least that I’m aware of but here is where things get messy and why this has become a controversy Mojang had allegedly gone through the fifth column’s old griefing videos and banned many of the accounts that showed up in them of all the accounts that were banned two of them in particular stood out Maxi taxi and D loader both were banned for appearing in the videos now Maxi taxi has not been a member of the fifth column for almost a year and the D loader account appeared in one of the griefing video videos but under its previous username both had not taken part in the most recent string of griefs this meant that Mojang had likely banned The accounts retroactively by using video evidence instead of their in-game systems as you can imagine this is a major issue because Minecraft footage and screenshots are very easy to fake or spoof and it opens up the possibility of other retroactive account bands as well now it gets even more bizarre from here When the Griefers attempted to appeal their bands Mojang’s support responded with a very interesting message and it reads we have evidence of you using a hack client to cause harm to other players this is huge because first of all it’s different than their official band reason which was harassment second It’s not actually against Minecraft’s Eula to use hacked clients in fact the only part of the rules that even mentions them is this part which reads we’d appreciate it if you didn’t use mods for griefing hacked versions or modded versions of the game client or server software are not okay to Distribute so Distributing hacked clients is against the rules but actually using them is not they simply suggest that you not use them to grief or cause chaos so why would Mojang support say that this is the reason this has interesting ramifications for the modding Community because hack clients and modded clients are often Indistinguishable from each other things like OptiFine or lunar client are both modded versions of Minecraft that do offer players advantages in multiplayer are those now considered unfair and bannable if you use them against others if players are trolling pay to win servers by using clients that allow duplication exploits is that now a Bannable offense from here it becomes even more convoluted when the banned accounts attempted to join the the modern versions of Minecraft the message said that they had been banned for abusive language used in a directed harmful manner so now there were three different reasons for a single band but This one was puzzling when I spoke with one of the leaders of the fifth column Orson he gave me a statement describing what had happened from his perspective but he specifically mentioned that their members do not use hateful or offensive speech while griefing because of the potential chat bands they could receive So how could abusive language be a reason well once again this is further evidence that Mojang used video as proof instead of the in-game chat reporting feature to voice his displeasure or SID went to Twitter the one place that’s even more toxic than 2b2t he made a tweet directed at the creator of Minecraft notch now for the record Notch has not been part of the Minecraft team or overseen its development for many years but surprisingly not actually responded with a simple message then don’t grieve he continued by saying quote I get there’s actual Free Speech aspects and whatnot to this but there’s A time and a place for things Orson responded by showing an image claiming that many of the servers they had grieved contained offensive hate symbols with Notch saying that he still had no interest in getting involved Orson would then jokingly tweet directly at Mojang saying that they had missed a few of his Accounts now if you’re planning on trying to get innocent Minecraft accounts banned you probably shouldn’t use one of the most famous 2b2t players of all time as a username but regardless Mojang was clearly sending a message you have to remember that streamers and content creators are one of the larger Ways that Minecraft is advertised on the internet so the fact that the fifth column grieved 50 streamers in less than a week is probably what Screwed them over in the end and after more back and forth emails with Mojang’s support it was clear that they had no intention of Reversing any of the Bands I do want to give my opinion on this entire ordeal because they developed a bot for the sole purpose of systematically grieving hundreds of Minecraft servers outside the Anarchy Community I do think that the fifth column Griefers deserved their bans for harassment if that had been the Only reason this would be an open and shut case However the fact that some accounts were allegedly banned retroactively using video evidence the ban reason being inconsistent across different versions and the fact that Mojang said using hacked clients was against their rules does have me a bit concerned those three things could have Ramifications for Minecraft as a whole especially the modding Community where modded clients and hack clients are usually very similar but what are your thoughts on this entire ordeal please let
