Raiding an Ocean Monument! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide (1.18 Tutorial Let’s Play) [S2 E38]

The village to sell to the leather worker we’re going to visit the village for a couple of reasons first of all i need to get a little bit more food i would like to eat more golden carrots because they’re really good for saturation but i

Kind of ran out of most other foods that i want to eat so i might as well head over to the village the other thing i want to do is very quickly if i grab some iron out of here and a little bit of redstone i’m going to make a compass

Where’s the redstone there it is i’m going to make a compass and we’re going to trade to the cartographer villager today because he can sell us a couple of maps to structures that we want to check out this week since this is structure week and everything so let’s hop down

Here let’s don our gold boots for a run through the nether and let’s go see the savannah villages here we are back at the savannah village our first port of call is going to be the leatherworker wherever he’s got to is this him is this the guy with the brown apron yes there

We go oh he needs five rabbit hide i guess we never zombified this guy in the end well i’m not gonna bother with it then we’ve only got three rabbit hide on us the next thing we need to do is find the farmer because he’s gonna sell us

Some golden carrots and he’s still trading them three for one emerald which means we can get a whole bunch of those and that will sustain us for a good long while last of all where’s the cartographer at he was talking to the farmer perfect he sells two separate

Explorer maps which are in kind of the same vein as buried treasure maps maps that will lead you to a specific location in this case he will sell us a ocean explorer map and a woodland explorer map and we are going to focus on the ocean explorer map today so when

I grab this off of him i can take a look at it in my hand in much the same way as another map and in the left-hand corner there in the bottom left-hand corner you will see that there is a different kind of marking than a regular treasure map it’s

Kind of like a little turquoise helmet of sorts and and that is actually a marker indicating where an ocean monument is and you might be wondering wait a second picks we found a couple of ocean monuments already we’ve seen them out there in the ocean and yes we have

But i figured if you folks wanted to know where an ocean monument was and you hadn’t encountered one just by casually browsing the oceans in your nearby vicinity then knowing that the cartographer trades them is actually a pretty useful thing the other map the cartographer sells the woodland explorer

Map will lead you to a woodland mansion and that is honestly worth taking in java edition at least because it’s kind of rare to stumble upon a woodland mansion whilst you’re just casually exploring the world they are massive structures but they only exist in dark oak forests and in java edition they

Tend to be in dark oak forests quite a distance from your spawn point so knowing that a cartographer sells maps to them is going to be the key to finding one of those which we might do this week depending on how things go here the other thing to keep in mind

Though is that the cartographer isn’t necessarily going to sell you a map to the nearest ocean monument in fact this one seems to be to the south west and right now i’m pretty sure the ocean monuments we’ve uncovered have been to the north that doesn’t mean that they’re

Necessarily the closer ones it just means they’re the ones that i already know about and since our player marker in the top right corner is looking a little small it seems like this ocean monument is quite a distance away and i know the savannah and associated woodlands travel off in that direction

For a fair distance so i think maybe we’ll follow this one but it’s going to be an ocean monument that’s a little bit out of our way before we do that though i want to return to our base and get some stuff so we can get geared up for

Taking on this ocean monument because frankly it is one of minecraft’s tougher overworld challenges so the first things we’re going to grab are a few potions of water breathing and it looks like i do need to strengthen the two that i’ve got in here i think i’ve also got one here

In my ender chest from some of the other buried treasures that we raided so i think i’m just gonna expand all of these into eight minute potions of water breathing and that way i’ve got plenty of those in reserve there we go eight minute water breathing potions all round

The other thing i’m going to make is some potions of night vision because it gets dark inside these ocean monuments and now unlike in the episode where we covered potion brewing for the first time i actually have access to golden carrots which are an interesting potion ingredient they will give you night

Vision potions but they can also be inverted with a fermented spider eye which i don’t think i have any of around here and those will give you potions of invisibility so it either improves your vision or decreases your visibility to other mobs and once again we’re going to

Make those eight minute night vision potions so we can have those match the effect duration of the water breathing and i think this brewing stand needs a little bit more blaze powder there we go as you can tell from my levels i’ve been doing a little bit more combining of

Enchants i’ve got mending on my silk touch x and i also have a silk touch shovel that i added mending to as well so we’re not walking around with a fortune shovel anymore unfortunately right now my helmet doesn’t have respiration which is one of the enchantments that allows your air to

Decrease slower when you’re underwater it effectively gives you like a little bit more time to breathe underwater and right now i’m not sure if any of my villagers are trading it but i don’t have respiration on any of these books and so i figure going in with a bunch of

Potions of water breathing is probably going to be a good call now of course eight minutes of water breathing is a pretty decent time and it’s not going to take us all three of those to raid this ocean monument if we are lucky so i

Think i’m going to put a potion of water breathing back there and just take three of each that seems like a sensible number to have one of the other things i’m going to take with me is a handful of doors because they’re very useful in java edition for creating underwater

Pockets of air to make sure that we can step into them and breathe if we need to if we need to refresh our potions in a hurry if our you know water breathing potions are about to run out and for whatever reason we don’t have any left

Usually a good idea to bring a couple of doors with you just so it’s not going to be the end of the world and finally i’m going to swap out my bucket of water for a bucket of milk for reasons that will become apparent once we end up in the

Ocean monument besides that i’m going to make sure that my main boots have depth strider and that i’m using a sword that has sharpness and not smite or bane of arthropods because these enemies are about to fight will not be affected by anything other than sharpness or

Enchantments on a trident if you happen to have a trident already but since we don’t the sword will probably be enough we’re going to head back through the nether and we’re going to go looking for this ocean monument at last our player locator has started to become visible on the map and there’s

Some pretty cool mountains around here actually so i’m quite happy we came out this far however we are three thousand blocks away from home on both x’s remember our home is relatively close to the zero zero coordinate in the center of the world and i think there are a

Couple of ocean monuments closer to spawn than this we’re still going to go and raid this one but i don’t know if we’re going to set up a permanent nether portal back to this for future farms or anything like that because i have a feeling there are a couple of ocean

Monuments that we can get to a little bit more conveniently from spawn however once we get out to the tip of this land mass here we will maybe be able to see yes just over there in the distance it is just within our render distance right

Now 16 chunks right now we have that ocean monument out there in the distance the prismarine arches with the sea lanterns at the top dead giveaway and you’ll see a lot more of the structure as we get closer so i’m pretty confident that we can take on this ocean monument

Today you might want to consider establishing some sort of portal network next to the next ocean monument that you happen to raid if you if it’s your first time doing it especially you might want to make sure that you can grab some gear from your base and head back here

Regardless of how confident you are because some people go into these things without any of the potions they just go in with doors and they can absolutely beast the thing i think you should at least set your spawn point nearby that way if you have any issues inside the

Ocean monument and you end up dying you can at least throw a boat down head over to the monument and hopefully swim back and get your stuff before all of it despawns but with that done there is no time like the present let’s row over to

This ocean monument and take a look and once we get a little bit closer we’ll start to see a few of the native species to the ocean monument swimming up around it ready to defend it the guardians as they are called are aquatic mobs and these are kind of the first dangerous

Aquatic mob we’ve encountered aside from the drowned and to some people the drowned don’t necessarily even count because they are technically undead that right there is a guardian kind of fishy looking kind of spiky looking and they are kind of deadly actually if you end up around here with a lot of guardians

It can be a little bit tricky to defend yourself because they will attack you at range with a laser kind of attack and you can’t block it with a shield and there we go that’s the other thing i was waiting for because once we get within range of an ocean monument that overlay

Will appear on the screen you’ll notice the little spoon icon appears in the right hand corner there you can hear the whooshing of the guardian’s attacks as they try and attack some of the squid that have spawned in the area and we get hit with mining fatigue three not even

Mining for tiga one in fact nothing in the game inflicts mining fatigue one but the guardian inside of these monuments the elder guardians will inflict mining fatigue on you preventing you from breaking blocks in the area we can still break items like boats and things like that but

Right now we are a little bit exposed here the first thing i’m going to do is locate the entrance to this ocean monument and the terrain here is generated kind of weirdly this archway on the side here is facing a wall of rock that seems to have been carved out

Just so the monument can be plopped down here but i think we need to swim towards this area and find the entrance the way to avoid guardians attacks unless you are invisible already which is kind of a convenient thing to do is just to swim around and hide behind a solid block we

Should better drink our water breathing potion before we run out of air though i was going to establish a quick air pocket here just by the doorway so we have somewhere to hide and somewhere to regain our air if we need it and once we’re in here even though the area will

Be lit by sea lanterns probably best to drink a potion of night vision as well so we can see a little bit better underwater probably better for the video as well so the guardians over here will attack you from range with this laser attack that right now is just showing as

A stream of bubbly particles sometimes it will show up as a more kind of guided laser line and they’ll try and swim towards you a little bit to attack you you can attack them but when they have their spikes out they will typically retaliate with a little bit of thorns damage

There we go we ended up getting hit by guardians there they do a lot of damage and you can’t block it with a shield so the thing to know about fighting guardians is that you don’t actually need to they will spawn all around this monument but they tend to get a little

Bit skittish and unless they’re cornered if you swim towards them they will end up swimming away so it’s often a good idea to confront the guardians head-on basically as you’re swimming around this monument just rush at the guardians and typically unless they’re cornered like this one here is you’ll find that they

Tend to want to swim away from you retracting their spikes and when they do that they’ll actually be vulnerable to damage without you ending up getting any thorns damage in retaliation the key here though is going to be managing our saturation managing our hunger to make

Sure that we can regain health when we need it because the thorns damage that these things will inflict is no joke and their regular attacks are also pretty powerful that’s why we’ve got a good amount of protection on our armor depth strider on our boots that means we can

Maneuver around here in the water and we don’t need to worry about drowning damage if we’ve got the water breathing potions you’ll encounter this room here where some dark prismarine seems to be built around something we’ll get back to that in a second but right now as i mentioned we cannot mine blocks

Basically while we have that mining fatigue effect we aren’t really able to mine through the walls of here which is a challenge because the main objective of these monuments is going to be to start off with finding the elder guardians who are causing this mining fatigue effect and dispatching them so

Let’s swim around a little bit and we should be able to find the entrance to a chamber where the elder guardian is hiding you’re looking for three chambers basically you’re looking for a penthouse chamber at the top here which is where the first elder guardian is and we’re

Going to dodge around some of the pillars in this room to avoid taking damage from his laser attack and then swim out when we can to hit him once he’s gonna open up those spikes so we still take a bit of thorns damage but most of the

Time there we go the mining fatigue effect just refreshed most of the time we should be able to get a good couple of hits in before he ends up damaging us there we go and we took him down and once we take him down we should receive

Our first wet sponge block we’ll talk more about sponge in a second and hopefully there are going to be rooms inside this monument which will be full of sponge blocks we can gather so you’ll always find one elder guardian in this room right at the top of the monument

Surrounded by all of these pillars and a little bit of dark prismarine the other two elders are in the wings of the structure so it’s important to look to the left and to the right when you’re swimming around here so that you can hopefully find elder guardian number two

Hanging out in this room with this central column here we’re taking a little bit of damage now because of the thorns effect and wow yeah he just hit me for two and a half hearts there’s not really a great way of blocking that other than swimming around behind these

Pillars so we’ll get a couple of hits we’ll swim away retreat break their line of sight with all of these blocks around here and go back in to deal another hit this is really the best way of dealing with these guardians if you don’t have ranged attacks and frankly underwater

The bose momentum does get killed a little bit you can’t really shoot stuff underwater all that effectively the arrows just kind of droop down like that so usually a good idea to either keep a trident on you or make sure that you can duck and dodge around these pillars and

Attack them up close a little bit later now in order to get to the other wing of the monument we could take this back path around here this will actually lead us all the way around although sometimes it is blocked off by a wall on this side

Nope looks like we can just swim around to this guy and he’s hanging outside of the chamber where we normally find him if you’ll excuse me for a second there we go break that line of sight normally you will find this elder guardian hanging out in this room here

But it seems like in the natural course of his pathfinding he’s swum away from this room this is one of the other feature rooms of the monument it’s got a bunch of sea lanterns in it and a central column of prismarine there and the elder guardian has decided that he’s

Going to make his way out into this corridor so we’ve got a bit of an open corridor fight right now but at least we have a pillar that we can dodge around hide behind and replenish our health there we go he swung back into the area where we’d normally find him so i’m

Gonna deal a couple more damage and just dodge around this pillar use those pillar strats to take him on a couple more hits should do it yes there we go we got him down in just a few hits not too shabby so now we don’t need to worry about that mining fatigue effect

Refreshing anymore and we still have two minutes left on our water breathing and night vision so we’ve managed to take on this ocean monument in about six minutes that’s not bad our next objective here in the monument is to do a little bit of exploring for a

Start we need to make sure we know where this room is usually towards the back of the monument is where you will find the kind of core room and if we look around a little bit there is a possibility of us finding one of the rooms that i mentioned earlier which is absolutely

Full of sponge blocks and those will be incredibly useful for us if we want to turn this ocean monument into a slightly more permanently livable area so right now i’m just exploring around the outside of these rooms to see if i can find a sponge room typically you’ll find

Them by swimming upwards into them they don’t have any side entrances so look above you as you’re exploring these areas and you might end up finding a sponge room the layout of the corridors in ocean monuments does change basically every time though so it’s not like i can

Give you a map to this place and show you exactly where stuff is the rooms in the wings and the penthouse stay pretty much the same but the interior is often very different so it’s worth keeping that in mind your first time exploring one of these monuments with that said

Our mining fatigue effect has now worn off and that means that it’s pretty close to our water breathing running out as well so i’m gonna stick another door down here we’ll put one there and one there so we have a little pocket to breathe in and a bit of defense from

Guardians and we’ll swig another water breathing and another night vision potion so that we can continue raiding the rest of the monument now i’ll be honest with you i don’t think we’re going to find a sponge room in this ocean monument which is a little bit disappointing because it means we can’t

Really do a whole lot with sponges yet we do have three sponges from killing the elder guardians but those aren’t exactly a big supply so i think what we’re going to do is grab the resources that we want to from this monument and hopefully we’ll be able to go and raid

Another ocean monument which is going to supply us with a bit more sponge the first thing i’m going to do is open up this core to reveal that there are eight gold blocks in here this is basically the loot from the ocean monument this is

The kind of stuff that you might want to get if you are a treasure hunter in this game although personally i think the more valuable things are the blocks because prismarine is a really neat block set which you can’t really get from anywhere other than an ocean monument while we’ve been killing some

Of these guardians even the elder guardians they have dropped some prismarine shards which can be combined in different ways to create prismarine blocks you need some ink sex in order to create dark prismarine and you need prismarine crystals in order to create sea lanterns but the prismarine bricks

And prismarine blocks that you see around you can actually be crafted just using prismarine shards four of them for a regular block of prismarine and nine of them in a three by three for the prismarine bricks i like to get as much of the dark prismarine and sea lanterns

As i can on my first visit to an ocean monument because i love building with these blocks the sea lanterns make for a very good clean like modern looking light sources so they’re often quite desirable and you’ll find that later on when we set up a guardian farm so we can

End up getting some of these resources in greater supply we’ll end up prioritizing sea lanterns with a lot of the stuff that we end up crafting and each of these rooms will have at least a couple of sea lanterns in them so it’s always good to rush around a monument

Once you’re done taking care of the elder guardians once you can break blocks again without fear of getting mining fatigue and you can clear out all of the sea lanterns that you’re able to find whilst dodging you just keep moving around the rooms and you’ll probably not

Have to run into too much issue with the guardians themselves now the reason we brought a bucket of milk with us in the first place was for that mining fatigue effect since we had about two minutes of mining fatigue left after the fight with the elder guardians if you wanted to you

Could drink a bucket of milk and dispel any potion effects that you had on you that includes negative status effects like mining fatigue that you can’t actually get from potions but it also means you would end up dispelling the water breathing and night vision effects that we got from the potions so really

It’s kind of up to you whether you want to do that or not personally i just tend to let the mining fatigue run out while i’m exploring so that i can figure out where to get the rest of the resources i want from and prioritize getting sea

Lanterns and dark prismarine but if the elder guardian refreshes your mining fatigue right before your potions are going to run out then it’s usually a good idea to have some buckets of milk on hand just in case you need to get rid of that mining fatigue so you can get

Mining and i might have made this look easy but for a first timer an ocean monument raid can be quite challenging you’re managing a lot of different things you’re swimming around it’s an environment that’s not all that familiar you’ve got to worry about how much air

You’ve got you’ve got to worry about the guardians lasering you and attacking you with thorns whenever you retaliate and it’s a little bit tough finding those elder guardians when you’re under a time limit the one piece of advice i would give would be to not really worry about cornering and fighting every single

Guardian because they’ll just end up respawning you’ll end up getting overwhelmed by them in some spots frankly just swimming towards them so they retract their thorns cancel their attacks and run away is one of the most valuable strategies when dealing with one of these places because you want to

Go for the elder guardians so that you can mine blocks in the area you don’t want to worry too much about everything else three elder guardians will always spawn with an ocean monument they appear on generation and they are persistent so they will never end up despawning if you

Go out of range whereas guardians of course do despawn because they’ve effectively respawned in this area every time you get around here they’re basically just like your standard hostile mobs but tied to a specific location so with that in mind the elder guardians really should be your priority

Because it means getting rid of mining fatigue and getting on with taking down the bits of the monument you want to take home okay looks like we are down to our last water breathing and night vision potion they’re both just about to run out so we’ll prioritize getting

Water breathing first and then we’ll get night vision right after that you see how dark it is in here though if we end up not having a night vision potion it gets a little bit dim especially now that we’ve started to take out most of the sea lanterns so usually a good idea

To have night vision just so you can see where you’re going so there might still be a couple of rooms here and there and you might even want to try and dig through the ceiling in places to see if there are any hidden rooms further up i

Think we probably got everything we can out of this monument we’ve got four minutes of water breathing and night vision left we’ve got a decent amount of blocks in here that’s almost three full stacks of dark prismarine and a stack and a half of sea lanterns is looking

Pretty good i think it’s probably time to make our way out and if you want to make sure that you’ve got a decent amount of water breathing and night vision before you do just so that you can make sure you make it to the exit in

Time but we’ll grab the boat that we used to get in here we’ll swim up to the surface a lot of guardians will have congregated around the outside at this point but now is probably the time to make our exit and just swim away as

Quickly as you can use the boat if you need to get on top of the water and row away and that’s the ocean monument pretty much defeated we managed to do quite well there and with the night vision potion we can see a lot under the surface because it

Basically eliminates any shadows so these are often good for looking for other landmarks here in the oceans if you’re curious and want to see what’s down there so now that we’re back on dry land we might as well drink the bucket of milk to show it dispelling the potion

Effects there we go so we don’t have the night vision or the water breathing anymore but that’s fine we weren’t going to use them on the trek home anyway and i think we will head home at this point i can briefly show you the crafting recipes for prismarine will start to

Appear here in our crafting interface and we don’t have any ink sex on us right now but that’s how you end up crafting dark prismarine and with sea lanterns you need prismarine crystals in a plus shape with prismarine shards on all of the corners so we don’t have

Enough for that right now but we have a few of those from buried treasure that we could always use if we want to there we go got a little bit more space back in my inventory and that’s this ocean monument explored although i kind of

Want to go back to spawn and find one of those ocean monuments that i thought was a little bit closer in the northern ocean because we still didn’t find a sponge room inside of here and i want to be able to do some cool stuff with

Sponges so we all bid farewell to this spot for now take another last look at the mountains before we go and head on back to spawn hey folks welcome back so it’s raining now but that’s not a problem because we’re gonna be spending a bit of time

Underwater anyway i’m gonna row out this way and i think i have found the closest ocean monument to our spawn point which is just over here i believe yep there it is fading into the render distance it’s only about 18 1900 blocks away from spawn in a northerly direction which is

Not too bad considering the other one was 3000 blocks out on both axes so we’ve got a fresh set of potions we’ve got a fresh bucket of milk and i’ve dropped off everything else back at home so i’m going to raid this ocean monument

With the hope that it has a room full of sponges looks like our entrance is around the side over here yep that’s where all the light is coming from at least and i’m gonna drink my night vision and water breathing potions before i dive in this time just for a

Little bit of security i’ve only got a couple of doors on me this time there we go all right now we should be able to make our way in here and i’m going to try and swim a little quickly we can of course swim underneath the legs of the

Monument here and no guardians should spawn underneath the monument so this is a relatively safe space as long as they don’t swim down here and then we can hop up on the side probably dodge these two who are just floating near the surface and we’re in okay well this one

Immediately starts with a slight difference in the structure we can go over to the right here and we’re not getting mining fatigue right away which is a good thing because oh there it is okay the elder guardian is right here directly above us at the top of the

Monument that’s not too bad going we can get a couple of hits in but yet we’re gonna start taking damage especially if i get stuck on blocks trying to play this one a little bit faster just so we can spend as much time exploring as possible but that gave us an easy first

Elder guardian let’s see if we can track down the second here is our core room right at the back of the monument and i’m still looking around just in case there are any upward exits towards sponge rooms but yeah the guardians have spotted me at this stage no sign of any

Sponge rooms yet but we also haven’t explored the entire thing let’s double back around here maybe yes there we go finally okay we have a sponge room at least and that might be two side by side actually that’s very good news let’s take out the elder guardians at least so

That way we can actually collect some of the sponges and here’s elder guardian number two floating in the room with the pillar there are of course a couple of other potions we could take if we wanted this to go a little faster we could bring a potion of strength with us i

Think strength two would provide a lot of extra damage against these guardians because we’re hitting them with sharpness four but it’s uh still a little bit hard to take them down they do have a lot of health i think to get to the other wing we’ll do

What we did last time and swing around the back here because that should connect us to the wing on the opposite side and number three should be in here somewhere unless he’s swum off into a different chamber it can happen sometimes they end up swimming up here

Behind the peeler or they end up getting into the next room so let’s dodge around this pillar it looks like yeah we’ve got a big lad in here behind this pillar this room is generated kind of weirdly actually that’s that’s neat i don’t see this very often

Yeah the big column of dark prismarine in the middle here with the sea lanterns dotting it is not something that usually generates i think it’s just tried to generate the furniture for a couple of these rooms and has not had the best time of it but there we go we’ve taken

Down the elder we’ve got a couple more guardians on us but we can swipe at them a couple of times grab what we can and then return to those sponge rooms because those are really going to be the focus for us here so let’s see we need

To go back to the core room hang a right i think we were going through here and we looked up in this chamber there was a sponge room and in this one there was a sponge room as well okay i popped a door down we’re gonna wait for the mining

Fatigue to dispel which should take a second or two and then i need to open up my ender chest and see if i’ve left myself a hoe in here or at least materials i can use to make a home you know what we might fortune some of this

Deep slate diamond so i can get myself a hoe crafted up here because one of the things we can do here is harvest sponges a lot faster if we have the appropriate tool and it turns out that a hoe is the right tool to be carving up sponges with

And naturally this would be much more effective if we had efficiency but compared to breaking it with your hands a hoe is a much faster tool to harvest sponges with just like that we’ve cleared out this room let’s grab any more floating sponges up here near the

Ceiling and let’s head over to sponge room number two which was over in this direction there we go lots of sponge in here very good so we got a stack of sponges there more or less in fact the three that we got from the previous monument will make that up to a full

Stack so that’s not the best but it’s also not too bad and once again i’m going to use the remaining time on my water breathing and night vision potions to take down all of the materials i like the most from this ocean monument so we’re gonna grab the dark prismarine

We’re gonna take the sea lanterns with us and hopefully those will sustain us for any future builds until we need to come back and make a proper guardian farm now with our final water breathing and night vision potions wearing off i’ve made my way back to the surface

After a pretty successful looting run we got more sea lanterns and dark prismarine from that monument than we did the last one and we also came away with a bunch of wet sponge blocks now we can turn those into dry sponge blocks if we want to and i may as well demonstrate

A couple of ways of doing that right here and right now first of all i’ll need to dig up some stone from around here to make myself a furnace but once we do it’s as simple as throwing the sponges into the item slot throwing in a

Piece of fuel and we’ll be able to turn all of these sponges into dried sponges and if you’re wondering what the point is of that it turns out sponges are a perfect way of getting rid of large quantities of water they are incredibly powerful they will actually drain a

Large area around them and sometimes even drain water blocks which are not adjacent to them so sometimes you need to be a little bit careful about where you’re placing a sponge but a sponge will turn into a wet sponge when it ends up drying up a large area like that and

With enough sponges we could actually drain the entirety of water out of the ocean monuments clear the entire thing out and if we wanted to use it as a base if i throw a sponge down in this patch of water over here you can see that once
