If you’re a really long time Minecraft player you probably remember launching the game and seeing this button saying play tutorial level but it was always grayed out and never did anything and one day it just disappeared with a game update and was soon forgotten now looking back at this button today got me Thinking was it ever used was there some secret tutorial level planned for the Java edition of Minecraft that’s right today I’m making a video about a button and the origin behind it The story of the play tutorial level button started when the title screen was added to Minecraft on January 31st 2010 with the button being added along with it but whoa wait a sec the background of the title screen Scrolls so I guess that was apparently a thing when the title Screen was first added but anyways this button was grayed out from day one probably because Notch had plans for a tutorial level but decided to prioritize other parts of the game instead which makes sense why make a tutorial level for a game that isn’t finished if one Significant change to the game was made that tutorial level would have to be updated to reflect that back in those days Minecraft would usually see multiple updates a week and through those updates the button stuck around unused until Minecraft Alpha 1.2.2 was released on November 10 2010. this update added official support for Texture packs which ended up replacing the play tutorial level button with one small update it appeared that the whole idea of having an in-game tutorial for Minecraft was scrapped but why well there’s probably one huge reason for this the internet when you loaded a Minecraft world for the first time you probably Had no clue what to do so what do you do search either Google or YouTube for a tutorial but how is doing that better than having a tutorial in the game well information and tutorials about Minecraft were already plentiful on the internet YouTube tutorials crafting recipes on the Minecraft Wiki building Ideas redstone contraptions all of this was player created and posted online for anyone to see the presence of this Minecraft related content on the internet also acted like free advertising for the game so in that case why create an in-game tutorial that would otherwise counteract those potential Minecraft related web searches Also think about the whole point of Minecraft it’s a Sandbox game where you can build and do whatever you want there wasn’t necessarily one linear way you had to play the game Minecraft was a game where you pretty much had to discover it for yourself and as a result It made the game so much more enjoyable because you never really knew what you were gonna find in it but if you really got stumped somewhere like trying to find a crafting recipe all you had to do was to look it up online between January 2010 when the play Tutorial level button was added and November 2010 when it was removed Minecraft’s popularity exploded on the internet when that button was initially added it probably would have made sense to add a tutorial but the internet eventually caught up and it just wasn’t needed anymore and in my opinion I’m Very glad that a tutorial wasn’t ever added so that still leaves us with the mystery of this grayed out tutorial level button it was just there never used maybe there was a World created for it but just never released when the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft came out it did Have a tutorial World from the start maybe this was the world that would have been added to the PC version I guess we’ll never know exactly but the reason the Xbox version had a tutorial World while PC didn’t was likely because it would have been a lot more cumbersome to Have to search the internet on a separate device for tutorials just to figure out how to play the game plus having a tutorial for a fully complete console game is usually expected of one now back to the Java Edition I did tweet at Notch asking if he had any specific Plans for the play tutorial level button but that’s kind of obvious of course he had plans given the button’s existence so maybe I asked the question wrong given why I didn’t get a response but what we do know is that nothing was ever done with it at least nothing was ever Officially released to the public so there you go that’s the story behind the play level tutorial button in Minecraft to this day there’s still no tutorial in the Java edition of Minecraft and for the reasons I described earlier it really doesn’t need one [Applause] Thank you Video Information
