Hello everyone my name is pixariffs and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day we’re back here at our little hole in the wall and today we are going to start taking a look at some of the precious resources that can be found in The world of minecraft and this is where our tools our armor and potentially all of the other stuff that we can do is going to take a big leap forward because today we’re going to start getting hold of some iron maybe a little bit of the copper that we found lying around here And we’re going to potentially take some first steps into caves but i wanted to discuss where to get iron first and foremost because iron is a very valuable thing we used it to create the shears that we’re now using to gather wool from sheep we can make better tools with it And we can even make some stuff for our own protection the iron up there though is a little bit out of reach right now so i’m going to teach you one of the most important skills a minecraft player needs and that is the ability to pillar up it’s very straightforward really once You get the hang of it we’ll need to grab a bunch of blocks we’ll need to find ourselves in a location that we can get more or less directly up to the iron ore up there and we’re going to place a block stand on it jump and place a block When we reach the peak of our jump and by repeatedly doing this you can even hold down the mouse button to make it a little bit easier for yourself it’s easy to make a pretty tall pillar that you’ll be standing on top of ready to reach up And harvest the resources and it looks like we have a really nice amount of iron here i was only after a couple but we’ve got four that’ll be perfect i can even holding shift place a block on the side of there to bridge out one more Block and grab another piece of iron ore so with four iron ore in our pockets we’re going to return to the furnace and we’re going to make our first iron pickaxe and a shield and honestly if it hadn’t been such a peaceful episode last time and we hadn’t needed to shear the Sheep i would honestly have crafted a shield with the first iron ore that we acquired because honestly a shield is going to protect you i think even more than having decent weapons will i think a good defense is what’s going to save you out there and a shield can take a Lot of damage let’s grab this iron ingot and let’s make sure we have enough planks on us thankfully we do but we’ve got a little bit more wood in here if we needed more we’re going to craft a shield by placing an iron ingot in the top spot there surrounding that with Wood and then putting one more wood on the bottom like that that creates a shield which we can move into our inventory we can place it in our offhand slot like that or we can use the f keyboard shortcut to move it in and out Of our offhand you can also use a shield from the main hand just gotta hold right click to block with it but it’ll go in the off hand and you can block from there whilst holding a weapon in your main hand and this is how you defend yourself while you’re out there fighting Monsters in minecraft the remaining three iron have finished smelting as well and so we’re going to turn that into one of our first iron tools the iron pickaxe this is going to be a huge step up from stone for a couple of reasons first of all it has a lot more Durability it has about twice as much durability as a stone pickaxe does and secondly the iron pickaxe can mine almost all of the materials in the game that require a pickaxe to mine so it’ll obviously be able to mine stone it can mine the oars that we’ve already Acquired but it can mine more precious ores like gold redstone and of course diamonds so we’re going to need to take this iron pickaxe with us if we want to go caving and honestly being a little bit faster than a stone pickaxe we’re going to be able to use it to acquire Some of the other resources from around here starting with this copper ore that’s been waiting for us to collect it from this little cave here and i think we’ll probably grab the copper or that’s in the overhang there we might even peel her up as we were doing before and grab Some of that coal so that we can start to smelt it now once i break this copper ore the water is going to overflow a little bit here so we’ll find something temporary to put there in the meantime maybe fill this up with some dirt and the little staircase that we’ve got up To the sheep now can stay there for the moment we’ll probably end up reformatting this area later but for now the infrastructure is fine the way it is and we can even harvest a little bit more of the wheat continue to replant here and now we have enough wheat we can Even make some bread out of it and if you’re planning on going on a bit of a caving trip which i’m planning on doing later in this episode one thing i will heartily recommend is that you bring enough food with you so three wheat in a crafting table just placed in a line Like that we’ll make you some bread we’ve got two loaves of bread there we can put the remaining wheat in there and if we wanted to we could smelt up some of the copper now copper isn’t like iron in that it doesn’t end up creating tools There are a couple of things we can make with copper most of which are decorative blocks we’re gonna leave the copper in this chest for now but if we stumble upon any other resources that we can combine with the copper for some interesting crafting recipes then we Might end up smelting it for now though we don’t need to worry about it too much and we don’t have a huge amount of coal to work with so i think it’s probably best that we leave it there for now and we come back with a whole lot more of it Stepping out of our front door the next day it is caving day and i’ve put a few of the resources away i’ve still got some wood and some coals so we can make some more torches i’ve brought a crafting table with me i’ve got a lot of Different types of food and you might want to shrink that down so you’re just using one type of food when you go caving but i do really recommend making sure you’ve got enough food just in case you get stranded somewhere and you need to heal up i’m bringing the stone Pickaxe with me because we only have one iron pickaxe right now and it might be worth preserving that until we find some materials that we really need an iron pickaxe to mine but i think we’re going to head off in the direction of the sunrise we’re going to head east and Let’s see what else we can find first of all we have a little miniature cave system in here that’s not really doing a whole lot there are a couple of hidey holes there’s a little bit more coal and i did spot this section here that we started Digging down into but that’s that’s not really leading anywhere there’s a little bit more iron down here though so we might grab some of that just in case it ends up being a larger vein and sometimes veins of iron and other ores will generate kind of diagonally so if You take out a couple of blocks and there’s maybe some blocks surrounding them it’s always worth having a bit of a dig around to see if you can find anything else in this case though only got us two iron not to worry that should be enough to take with us somewhere else And i think we’re going to head once again east over this ridge and see if we can find any caves now the reason i want to focus on finding iron is that iron’s a really good example of a resource that is distributed in a bunch of different ways throughout the world typically most Of the rare resources you’re going to find can be found in deeper caves like the one that we see over there and hopefully that’s a cave that’s going to lead us down into the depths of the world to levels where we can acquire abundant amounts of iron but you might Also want to look for higher terrain like mountains because above a certain height usually above y 100 and going on upwards into the higher ranges of mountains you’ll find more iron generating the further up you go as well so depending on the terrain that generates around you when you start your World you could find that there are abundant resources nearby without you having to go caving you can simply climb the nearest mountain and gather some resources from the top of that and it looks like unfortunately the cave that i thought was over here has turned out to be a lighting illusion That’s really unfortunate there are sometimes occasional rendering issues with light when it comes to sharp corners like that so it does seem like that one has misled us slightly let’s take a quick look at this hillside and see if there can be any iron found up There well i’m certainly seeing a lot of coal over here in this niche but i don’t think this mountain is quite going to be high enough to start generating iron ideally you want to be about 40 blocks or more above sea level so it doesn’t look like this mountain is quite going To be tall enough and of course you’ll find a lot more iron in the much higher mountains so we’re going to peel her up a little bit here to get some of this coal the coal will be useful if we need to make another furnace and smelt some Of this iron on the go because rather than returning to our base and smelt it up every single time it’s going to be valuable for us to smelt this iron as we go so that way we can craft it into the tools and armor we need to survive this Trip especially if we run into some monsters a bit later so i’m going to make sure i have a bunch of coal and at least eight cobblestone on me that way i can make sure i can craft a furnace and we’re sticking around areas that have a Lot of trees right now so if we need to acquire any more wood then of course we can do that too in a previous episode i talked about how i’ll sometimes leave little sections of resources like this coal here in the mountain and the reason for that is primarily so that you can Come back here and you can be guaranteed that a place you have been will still have some of that resource left over in case you die and need to gear up again if i come back over this way having lost my equipment but i know i went in this Direction i can be sure to grab a little bit of coal from that area before i keep going and that will help me grab some torches and a variety of other things this lake here is quite spectacular by the way i love the shape it’s quite a Neat little lily pad shape and it looks like that has a hole that leads deeper into the earth so maybe we’ll swim over and take a look at that let’s hop up onto the side here and yes this actually looks quite interesting you’ll notice there is some copper on the wall over There we’ve got some coal and we’ve got some iron ore there as well so i’m going to carefully ride this waterfall down and it’s important that we try and stay in the water stream a little bit here because if you step outside of the water stream you can end up falling if you Fall into water though you’re actually pretty safe you can fall into a single block of water and still survive a fall without taking any damage so that’s an important thing to know when it comes to exploring cave formations like this we’re actually going to craft a bucket a Little bit later which will give us a portable source of water we can grab ourselves a source of water from any of these areas take it with us and use it in emergencies and it looks like coming down into the cave here we’re going to encounter a zombie so let’s take a Couple of swipes at him it looks like he’s stuck underneath the rock right now trying to get to me and a couple of hits will take him down a stone sword though is still a little bit weak and it looks like there are some other zombies lurking in the Shadows down here so once again as i go i’m going to light up my way with torches and if we get a chance to there are a couple of tricks that i can use to make sure i know which way i’m traveling when we go caving and it looks like We’ve let through some water from above so i’m going to block that off really fast just so we have an idea of which direction we’re traveling now this baby zombie is a little bit faster than an adult zombie it will take just as much damage to kill it But that shouldn’t be any big trouble and it looks like we have a creeper over there as well so these are of course the dangers of exploring darkened areas because mobs will spawn in complete darkness there we go managed to block that one with the shield because mobs will spawn In dark areas most of the time you’ll find a lot of mobs spawning underground because the dark areas down here populate with mobs when they cannot spawn on the surface during the day this pit has led us a little further down in the world and as we can tell From the dripping ceiling it’s actually right underneath that big lake that we had outside there is a little bit more copper in here but unfortunately no more irons so i think we’ll have to go further afield and track down another cave one alternative though would be to dig down from here because there’s Always a chance if we started digging a staircase down but we might encounter a few other materials as we go materials don’t just spawn on the surface like you won’t always find iron ore exposed to the open air you might even start to dig down putting torches down as you go and find Some blocks of iron ore by chance as you dig down through the world but i find there we go we’ve got some iron right here i find that it’s often better to go caving in the early days because most of the time you can just run through a cave Glancing around at the environment that surrounds you and you should hopefully find a few more resources as you go there but it looks like we’ve stepped out into another cave thankfully that tunnel down actually led us into a cave system and we’re standing on a patch of Iron right now there is copper around us as well potentially a lot more stuff to explore down here here is where we can get into some early caving strategy and cave navigation what we want to do as we explore is make sure we place the torches on the Left-hand wall or you can use the right-hand wall if you want to but stick to one wall or the other if you can and the reason for that is because it stops you from getting lost if you place the torches on the left hand side as you run Down through a cave and it looks like this cave dead end here you can follow the torches on the right-hand wall to get back to the point where you entered the cave once i get to this point here if i turn the corner i’ll notice the Torches go off on the left hand side in that direction and i can be pretty certain that my entrance to the cave was around here because there are no torches going off in this direction and as you can see i’ve placed torches on the left As i was coming down here so i know that that is the right way back that’s kind of the mnemonic that always helped me remember this if you place torches on the left you’ll always find the right way back i learned that from martin in the little wood who i think learned it From the original minecraft survive and thrive series from paul sores jr so it’s got a legacy of helping people navigate these caves i think that’s always a good thing to remember so a little bit more iron a little bit more copper we’ve got 14 iron now so this is really when we Can start thinking about stopping smelting some of this stuff up and using it for crafting tools and armor before i do that i am going to take a quick look around the rest of this cave light up a couple of areas as we go and make sure That nothing is going to sneak up on me while i’m working at the furnace because as a couple of people have pointed out in the comments of previous episodes it’s useful to know that while you have your inventory open or you’re looking at a crafting table or the interface for a furnace You can’t move around and yet the world around you is not paused it’s not like hitting escape to pause the game you’ll notice all of the sound cuts off the subtitles disappear that is the game paused if you’re in a crafting table everything is still happening around us the torches are Still burning and mobs can still sneak up on you unawares so it is good to remember that while you’re crafting stuff or while you’re putting things in a furnace you are a little bit vulnerable so lighting up your surroundings is a good way of making Sure that you don’t get snuck up on by mobs we’re going to place a little bit of coal in here we’ll need more than one piece of coal to smelt all of that and we’re going to be adding more to it by mining out the rest of the iron from These walls that’s the last of my stone pickaxe broken and i think we’ll probably switch to the iron pickaxe now because it seems like we have a pretty nice amount of iron in the surrounding walls that we can use to craft another iron pickaxe and some more iron gear if We want it perfect we’ve got another 10 raw iron that we can place in the furnace to make some more iron ingots and i think we’ll start making some iron armor at this point it’s usually a good idea to get iron nice and early so that You can armor up as soon as possible and with four iron ingots we should be able to make a pair of iron boots just by placing them either side of the crafting interface like so we’ll get the advancement suit up for that one and if We hold the boots in our hand and right click we’ll actually equip them straight from the hot bar we can also do that by just placing them in the item slots of your inventory here but it’s kind of nice to be able to quickly equip them as You go while the rest of those are smelting we’re going to use our time wisely and check around the rest of this cave we’ll gather up a little bit more of the copper and pretty soon we’ll start to find that copper is overwhelming our inventory a little bit Because each iron ore block will only drop one raw iron each copper ore block will actually drop a lot more i think they sometimes even drop as much as five raw copper you when you mine them with a basic pickaxe so i’m probably just going to condense all of the raw copper down Into these blocks of raw copper that way it’s not going to take up too much space in my inventory once we start to have more than a stack of raw copper so 9 pieces of raw copper can be condensed down into a single block we can always Break it up again afterwards and you can even do the same with the raw iron pieces that you pick up if you’re starting to find yourself filling up an iron that you’re not going to use for other things now we have enough to craft an iron chest plate and i will usually Prioritize a chest plate because of all the pieces of armor it’s the one that provides you with the most protection it gives you plus six armor with an iron chest plate with five more iron ingots we can craft ourselves a helmet we’ll equip that as well and now we are Looking pretty well equipped we’ve got about half our armor bar above the health bar there filled up with armor and we should have enough to make some leggings as well as save a bit of iron for some tools we’ll grab the copper from this patch of granite here and look A little further down the cave it does seem like we have a bit more iron ore here and this is opening out into a slightly larger vein that’s perfect we’ll grab all of this we’ll smelt that up as well and then we should have enough to replace all of our stone tools With iron with seven ingots freshly smelted from the furnace we’ll craft a set of iron leggings and that is a full set of iron armor all done now if you wanted to and if you found a decent herd of cows on the surface you could craft Armor out of leather as well and we will probably be making some leather boots later on because those will be useful for traversing snowy areas a bit later but for now i think it’s probably best to make iron armor some of the first armor that you acquire iron is fairly Straightforward to get hold of once you find a decent cave or a tall enough mountain and honestly i think iron armor is some of the better armor to start out with because it provides more protection leather armor is softer and it won’t provide as much protection as these iron Pieces you can also find or even craft gold armor for yourself but for the most part i think iron armor is going to be the most important thing to get hold of if you’re less confident with combat and you want to go exploring now that we have a few leftover iron Ingots i think i’m going to upgrade my stone sword to an iron one and we’ll grab one of those and we’ll probably make ourselves an iron axe as well now you’ll notice that the iron sword does six attack damage as opposed to the stone swords five so the iron sword is Going to be a more effective weapon on the other hand the stone axe and the iron axe have exactly the same attack damage the iron axe is just ever so slightly faster so while the inax is still a fairly effective weapon it’s not any more damage than the stone axe what You really gain with an iron x is a little bit of extra durability so it’s kind of nice to know that the inx is a good alternative and we might wear out the rest of this stone x a little bit later just chopping down some trees or Something like that as we go you’ll also have noticed we’ve encountered a few other types of stone and these are the decorative stone types diorite andesite and granite you can see them in the caves around us and typically they are just there for decoration you can’t Craft any kind of tools you can’t make for example an andesite sword or it doesn’t even turn into a stone sword if you use them in a crafting interface they’re mostly just there to make things like slabs you can make polished versions of each of those blocks and They’re more for building and decoration than they are for practical things like making tools the rest of our iron ingots are done and i’m not going to make an iron shovel for now since anything that can be acquired with a shovel we can get with a stone shovel instead we’re going To keep those iron ingots handy and we’ll see if we need another iron pickaxe before long because we’re going to look around the rest of this cave and see what other resources we can acquire we’ll continue down the passageways that i’ve already started to light up we’ll Pop a torch every so often there’s a little bit more copper there which is lovely to see and i think that’s probably going to be it for this passage of the cave you might want to dig into the ends of caves a little bit further to see if they break out into other Caves because sometimes these things generate almost touching but not quite we’re going to grab all of the copper from here and mine out the entirety of this copper vein which is actually going to be a little bit larger than the iron veins that we’ve found let’s use the Andesite just to pillar up out of here since it looks kind of similar to the rest of the stone that’s around us and our last fork of this cave heads back down in this direction past our entrance so once again we’ll leave torches on the left heading in this direction and we’ll See if we encounter anything well there is one more patch of copper here but it looks like that is going to be it for this cave not a bad haul all things considered we got enough iron that we could get hold of some early iron armor And some iron tools and we got a decent amount of copper which as you can see is now taking up more space in my inventory than it needs to so i’ll condense all of that down into raw copper blocks and that way it only takes up two inventory Spaces instead of three you see we are using our space a little bit more efficiently because my inventory has started to fill up with all kinds of stuff oh and coming back up the cave i didn’t even notice that there was some iron ore right here in the ceiling so We’re going to grab that as well if we smelt that back at our smelting station in the cave that will take our total amount of iron ingots up to nine and we can even craft that into a block of iron if we want to there we go we have nine Iron ingots which i can craft into a block of iron we’re going to take that and we’re going to bring it back to our base that can be our trophy for today’s episode and honestly i’m quite glad that we found a relatively small cave system to start off with because some of the Caves in the new terrain generation for minecraft 1.18 are absolutely massive and i didn’t want us to get overwhelmed too quickly so if you’re exploring this world yourself if you’re a java edition player you can use the world seed that i’ve left in the video description you Should be able to find this cave and find the same stuff if you dig down in the right place i’m going to leave some of the copper and coal that are around here for now we’ll get those a little bit later to get back up here we’re Going to ride the water stream and we’re going to craft a bucket so that once we reach the top of that lake we will be able to grab a little bit of the water to ride the water stream up all we’ll need to do is jump into the water stream And then keep holding the jump button so that we can float up to the top here and then just make sure you’re moving forward so that you step into the water after that you can hop up on land and we’re going to grab some water from this Lake and you can see there that the water source is actually reformed in front of us so back at the house we’re going to talk a little bit about water mechanics and how we can use those to our advantage it’s also worth noting that we’re stepping away from our base a Little bit and as you explore in minecraft you will kind of get used to your surroundings you’ll start to navigate instinctively by the landmarks in the terrain for example this massive river here this sort of has established kind of a lake system around here this is something that’s really helping me Get a fix on where i am so i know that once i swim back across here i’ll be close enough to my base that i’ll be able to spot the sheep farm and our hole in the wall but in situations where you’re spending a little bit of time Further away from home it’s useful to take note of some of these landmarks maybe leave a trail for yourself by you know placing blocks and torches and things so you know which direction you were going or take note of which direction the sun is in as we were Leaving our base i made a note of the sun rising on the horizon which meant we were going east and if we look up right now we can see the sun is setting in this direction or at least it’s going down in this direction it’s not going to Set for a while and over here in the western side of the world we come back to our sheep farm our wheat field and honestly the wheat field has not done a whole lot because i think we’ve been a little bit too far away for the game to Recognize that the wheat needs to grow but that’s fine we’ll be spending a little bit more time around here and we can sort through some of the things we’ve brought home from our caving trip we’ll hop into the house we’ll put some of this stuff in the chest we can even Combine some of the raw copper we already acquired from outside of our house to put those back together in there we’ve got a bit more cobblestone this chest is becoming a bit of a mess so i think we’ll probably need to start a storage system of sorts before long But anyway i promised you a bit of an introduction to water mechanics and i think this seems like the ideal time to do it we’ve got a bucket now we’ve got a little lake right here that we’ve been using to irrigate our crops and i can start to explain the mechanics of Renewable water so over here a little bit out of the way and away from the noisy sheep we’ll dig out a little square of blocks just a two by two square right here and we’re going to place our water bucket on one side of this you’ll notice it flows down towards This corner the water source is in this corner here so if we want to pick it back up again we can do that by right clicking and then placing it again by right-clicking will empty the water bucket out so it’s flowing in this direction but you can’t pick up any of The flowing water around here because it isn’t a source of water however if i pick up another water source block from over here and i place another one in the opposite corner of this water stream here you’ll see that all of the water there has converted into flat and not Flowing water and that now means each of these pieces of water is a water source i can pick up water from any corner and it immediately reforms into the same shape i can place the water back down in the same space pick it up from literally anywhere in the square and it will Reform into a set of water sources again this is because two water sources at the same height but on different sides of a block will produce a water source on the middle block so each of these two water sources in either corner produces a water source here if you take away this Water source though this one there is going to flow down into this side because there isn’t a water source on the adjacent corner but if i break this out and place another one there it’s going to fill back up again you see so as long as there are water sources on Two sides of a square that square is going to be filled in with some more water this is really useful to know because it can help us to flatten out and organize floating areas of water like this with no effect on where that water is flowing but most importantly if You have access to at least two buckets worth of water you can create a renewable source of water pretty much anywhere i can grab one more bucket of water from our reservoir up here we’ll place it down here in front of the house and now we have an infinite water source Here as well and i can start moving the water here into different patches i can basically multiply this water and that now becomes a source of water that i can take anywhere else in the world so even if there isn’t a source of water nearby You can create as much water as you want so if we hadn’t encountered this lake here and we didn’t have a convenient place to hydrate all of our crops we could grow a farm down by the river or down by the ocean but we could also craft an iron bucket bring the water With us place it down anywhere in the world and as long as we had two buckets of water we would end up with an infinite water source that we could propagate as many times as we wanted to in this case though i kind of like the water flowing down here naturally so i’m Going to remove all of these water sources one at a time to clear the water out from this area and it’ll just flow down from the reservoir like it has before so with our water bucket in our hot bar our iron tools in hand the ion Armor on and a little bit more iron left over i think that’s where we’re going to call it for this episode of the minecraft survival
