On august 20th 2009 the creator of minecraft notch was chatting with some people online when he sent an intriguing message omg i think i failed at making a pig some other users asked for a picture and after a few minutes notch put a link to an image called disturbingpig.jpg here’s that image Reactions in the chat were swift with the consensus being that this was a bizarre and terrifying creature not even one minute after the picture was posted notch decided that he would keep it for a creepy creature little did he know that the field pig would one day become The single most iconic and recognizable piece of media he’d ever create that’s because this strange grey abomination would one day become the creeper nowadays creepers are so prominently connected to minecraft content that we almost don’t even notice it they’re just expected but in the game itself the Creeper is no friendly beast it sneaks up on us and destroys our stuff not a very nice thing for a mascot to do so how did this happen how did the creeper become a cultural icon join me as we take a short look at the history and impact of minecraft’s most famous mob Before we get going i want to shout out today’s video sponsor surfshark it’s a vpn which means it can swap the real location of your device with a new one this way you can virtually travel to any country around the globe this is great for accessing region block content for Example if you wanted to watch the other batman films on netflix ahead of the new movie’s release you might not be able to access them from the us however if you use surf shark and change your location to hungary you’d be able to watch them Do you want surf shark click the link in the description to get 83 off plus three extra months for free with my code retro gaming now back to the video not just disturbing pig underwent a rapid evolution on september 1st 2009 he posted a video entitled minecraft new Enemy creepers thus finally giving a name to the beast it is here that the creeper gains several of its most important characteristics this is the first time we see the texture as a green and leafy body with a dark and shadowy face etched in an eternal frown the Earliest creepers move in an unsettling way bouncing around until they spot a player when killed they explode damaging the surrounding area while the early creeper is slightly different from the modern one the important elements are all there the face the color the shape and the propensity for sudden Destruction there were a few minor tweaks that needed to be made in october of 2009 the texture was tweaked slightly and it hasn’t been changed since by early 2010 the creeper was essentially the one that we know today its attack had been adjusted to the sneaky explosion instead of a melee attack Gunpowder was added as a drop and that was basically it for the following decade plus there would be nothing more than minor tweaks to the creeper the creeper rapidly gained an infamous reputation due to its silent movement and explosive attack one of the main points of minecraft gameplay is Construction the player builds a crafting table a simple starter house and so on and so forth we’re constantly thinking about what we’re going to build next or how we’re going to improve what we already have however the creeper lives in direct opposition to this goal it is the mortal enemy of creativity Sure skeletons and zombies might kill us and even kick us out of a hardcore world but the creeper does something worse its entire goal is to destroy the world we’ve created by breaking our chests and demolishing our houses it’s a persistent threat that even years later still Catches us off guard on occasion the creeper explosion is one of those universal experiences that ties all minecraft players together creeper okay Shoot okay yet for some reason the minecraft community collectively loves the creeper so much that it is a symbol of the game itself in march of 2011 the minecraft title screen logo was changed within the a a new creeper face was added one of the earliest official uses of the Creeper as a symbol for minecraft itself henceforth whenever minecraft media was released be it spin-off games books or mobile apps the creeper face was tied to the game even within minecraft it shows up in sporadic locations as a mascot it’s found in chiseled sandstone on cleric villagers as a fireworks star a Banner pattern and even as an easter egg on the audio spectrogram of disc 11. the creeper face is found in many places outside of the game as well the official minecraft twitter and youtube channel both have the creeper faces their picture the discord server has the icon Animate and explode like a creeper the more you look the more you see mojang thinks of the creeper as one of the primary symbols to represent minecraft perhaps nothing crystallizes the importance of the icon more than the minecraft game design book written by yinz this book goes over the very Essence of minecraft explaining the fundamental design principles and secrets about the game nothing but the creeper was worthy enough for such an important book but that book isn’t sold in stores nonetheless the creepers made its way onto official merchandise of all kinds including shirts shoes plushies keychains stickers wallets posters water Bottles lego sets fidget toys cereal laundry bags bed canopies pinatas peeps and just about anything else you can think of creeper boxers anyone or for the ladies how about a creeper bikini you can buy a creeper in a cube of slime for some reason as moyang embraced the creeper so too Did the community there was creeper fan art some of it was cute some of it was weird and some of it was horrifying such as the creepers drawn in a realistic style the creeper found its way into countless memes showcasing the quirks and oddities of the mob people made fan Videos and animations with creepers their groups of creeper nfts linus tech tips made a bobble head creeper computer someone made a creeper on an apple in 2022 redditors created an animation of a creeper blowing up on the subreddit place pixel by pixel ten years earlier the billboard 100 topping single revenge By captain sparkles told the story of a character who’s running from a creeper but eventually finds the strength to defeat it it included the line creeper oh man this meme has managed to survive even to the present day but the creeper has also been used in more sinister ways such as The man who donned a creeper suit and then proceeded to commit armed robbery using it as a disguise i can’t imagine that moyang was too pleased about that one the creeper has been referenced in other media such as television for example the simpsons did an entire opening sequence parodying minecraft finishing off with Most zyzlak as an exploding creeper video games have also referenced it including borderlands 2 and torchlight 2 both of which have creepers as a special enemy terraria even has a creeper set of vanity items suffice to say it doesn’t matter where you look the reality is that the minecraft community loves the Creeper well most of us do not the person who made an internal creeper pit of despair but for the rest of us why why do we love an enemy that’s the bane of our existence in the game an enemy that has jump scared us countless times An enemy that lives and dies to destroy our hard work well there are a couple of possibilities it could simply be that the creeper has a long history and we like it because we’re used to seeing it for so long that’s probably part of it after all it Has been in the game longer than any other enemy and has remained relatively unchanged but i think there’s more to it than just that something that certainly helps is that the creeper is simple but unique in design the shape the color and the face are immediately recognizable When we see it in game it instantly evokes a reaction oh oh god oh my god oh my god oh my god oh my god go go go go go go ah he’s chasing me in the moment it isn’t always fun but when we think back upon it creepers lead To some of the most memorable experiences in minecraft this is another reason why we like the creeper so much it’s just so strongly associated with minecraft gameplay getting blown up by a creeper is a uniquely minecraft experience and despite the setbacks it’s unforgettable and i have to think this Contributes to why we find ourselves loving the crunchy foe it brings us back to the memories that shape our view of the game from that perspective the choice for the creeper to be the symbol of minecraft is obvious it joins the ranks of super mario pikachu and sonic As characters that are forever tied to their associated franchises no matter the future of minecraft there will always be the creeper our favorite disturbing pig thank you all so much for watching the creeper holds an important role in minecraft culture and we’re so used to it that we don’t always think about Where it came from hopefully we covered some of what makes the creeper so special as always let me know what you thought in the comments did i miss anything also sorry for the delay in videos there’s some big things coming up so stay tuned we will go ahead and end with That this has been rgn thanks so much for watching and i’ll see you all in the next video have a great day you Video Information
