While watching this video if you doubt the point that I’m trying to make then at least stick around until the end of the video when I prove my point with the test that you can see on screen November 23rd 2010 was the first day that I ever Played Minecraft the game was basic it was primitive the nether was still brand new there is no end realm or beds enchanting potions none of it it’s safe to say that minecraft was an entirely different experience back then your only goal was to survive and thrive the rest is up to You in modern versions of Minecraft a lot has certainly changed and in today’s video I want to discuss a core mechanic that used to exist within Minecraft that for the most part no longer does passive mob spawning now you might be thinking wait a minute passive mobs do spawn what are you Talking about and yes they do spawn when you first generate the world or new chunks but what happens once all of the pigs cows chickens and sheep within a given area die for the most part they’re pretty much gone and the terrain becomes a lifeless wasteland unless you do Something about it such as making a mob farm to me that doesn’t feel very fun or very intuitive and that’s what I want to discuss today so let’s go ahead and let’s get right into it this video is sponsored by MC pro hosting Minecraft alpha 1.0 through the end of beta 1.7 lasted for 441 days but over 3,000 days have passed since the release of minecraft beta 1.8 so is it even fair for me to talk about this anymore considering that the feature that I want back hasn’t been a part of the game for Like eight times the amount of time that it existed in the first place well I think so so let’s get into it ever since minecraft beta 1.8 s release the way in which passive mobs would populate the world is that when a new chunk is generated for the very first Time there’s a roughly one in ten chance that passive mobs will spawn within that chunk this part makes sense if no passive mobs ever spawned at all what would be the point however what happens when all of those passive mobs that initially spawned in with the world die And it’s time for new ones to take their place well if you played Minecraft as much as I have you might know how new worlds tend to play out generate the world and make a small base kill all of the passive mobs in the area to get your Initial supply of food but when the food runs out realize that there’s no passive mobs near you anymore because you killed them all so you venture out a little bit further into the world round up to of every passive mob make a mob farm and go from There to me that’s a problem so to be more specific my problem is not that mob farms are a thing if that’s how you want to play Minecraft that is perfectly fine my issue is that it’s nearly a requirement and has been ever since minecraft beta 1.8 s release unless of Course you actually want to plant crops for your food which is also fine but hang on if passive mob spawning has not always functioned like this how did it function before well this is where things can get complicated so here’s what I’m gonna do I’ll explain how things used to function be Or beta 1.8 why it worked so well and then I’ll explain what changed after beta 1.8 and why that change was and still is problematic so okay here’s a snippet from the Minecraft Wiki article for mob spawning from August 27th 2011 about two weeks before minecraft beta 1.8 pre-release one arrived mobs are Broadly divided into three categories hostile friendly and water for example squid each category has a spawning cycle once every game tick or one twentieth of a second within the same article there’s another note that for passive mobs to spawn the block its spawning on must be Grass in the light level must be nine or higher what all of this information amounts to is this during the day there was a pretty good chance that passive mobs would spawn quite frequently all over the place and at night it was equally as likely that hostile mobs Would spawn instead unless you had torches all over the place so after this in beta 1.8 what changed sometime during or shortly after minecraft beta 1.8 s release around the same time that mob breeding became a thing the spawn behavior for passive mobs changed entirely so I’ll do what I Did before I’ll read an excerpt from the Minecraft Wiki but this time for passive mobs spawning behaviors for modern versions of the game so let’s go mobs are broadly divided into four categories hostile friendly water and ambien hostile mobs have a spawning cycle of once every tick or one twentieth of a Second same as before friendly and water mobs have only one spawning cycle every 400 ticks or once every twenty seconds because of this where conditions permit spawning hostile mobs spawn frequently but passive mobs spawn very rarely most animals spawn within chunks when they are initially generated so if this time Is to be taken and interpreted literally at face value that means it is four hundred times less likely that passive mobs will spawn once the initial mobs that first generated have died I mean seriously am I reading that incorrectly well yes but also no rather than getting into the Exact math formulas that govern all of this behavior I’m instead just going to show you a practical example in game with both minecraft beta 1.7 and minecraft release 1.14 both worlds are set to normal mode it’s daytime and have just run a command to kill all loaded Entities now I’m gonna fly around very similar terrain on both maps and count up all of the passive land mobs that I see between both versions of Minecraft the footage that you see playing right now is sped up by three times as I’m flying around it is immediately apparent That passive mobs spawn far less frequently in modern versions of Minecraft compared to how they used to in the old days now to arrive at the point of this video why do I feel that mob spawning far less frequently is a problem well honestly because every version of Minecraft since the hunger Systems implementation requires you to gather way more food than before the hunger systems implementation keeping yourself alive has become a bit of an annoyance the game is no longer about raw unfettered exploration but instead it’s a monotonous grind to keep yourself alive and to keep you from starving Before the hunger system came along if you were good enough at the game to not take any damage you did not need food at all ever plain and simple it was intuitive it made sense but now not only do passive mobs spawn far less frequently but you also need food way more Than before making mob farms almost a requirement but hey the good thing about Minecraft Java Edition is if you want to enjoy earlier versions of the game you can just play any
