Cartography table is the next block to get some love from the mojang saviors hey guys welcome to omgcraft today we’re taking a look at the cartography table introduced a while ago maybe like a month or two ago now it has functionality in the latest snapshot so Let’s take a look at everything that it does so here we are inside of minecraft and a basic little world and first let’s start off by making the cartography table here it is right here this is the recipe if you are going to start getting into map making you are going to need These uh four items you’re going to need logs you’re going to need sugar cane you’re going to need some iron and a little bit of redstone to make the table all you do is start off with just a single log and get four oak planks from That here let’s get this get out of there then next you’re going to put down at least three sugar cane to get two paper from that and then you’re gonna put down two planks and two paper on top of that and this can be kind of anywhere in your Crafting table it doesn’t have to be up there in the upper corner but that is how you make yourself a cartography table these tables look pretty cool and it doesn’t matter which way you place them they will always face in the same direction with this little globe-like Thing in the corner you already saw it but this is the graphical user interface or gooey gooey it’s very gooey so before you get started with the photography table you do need to make yourself a map and how do you do that first let’s make up all Of the rest of our paper with our sugar cane we can put that sugar cane away so we got some paper and now you’re gonna need to make some uh compasses okay and that requires iron ingots in a little diamond powder with a pattern with a redstone dust in The center and that is how you get compasses those do stack so those are nice next you’re going to take your compass drop it into the middle of the crafting table and surround it with paper and then you get a yellow paper out of it which is actually an empty map Now i’m just going to use creative menu to make a ton of different empty maps and uh once and then also keep your paper around because you’re going to be using that also uh and here is how you create a map you have an empty map in Your hand and you just right click it and then bam it creates a map and as you can see i still need to kind of go out here to create the map area and then i can come back and now i have a fully made map now this guitar cartography Table will help you do different things with this map and the old way is actually still functionable so i just kind of want to show you in the past if you wanted to duplicate a map you would take one map and an empty map and put it into the Crafting recipe and you could kind of double up or triple up or whatever make you know nine different copies of that map or you could just make a single copy and now you have two versions of the exact same map there is nothing different about those and If one map got updated the other one would get updated now this is pretty zoomed in as you can see and you can zoom that out by dropping your map into a crafting table and surrounding it by paper once again this is the old way of doing things the cartography table gets Rid of all this but i just wanted to show you that it has functionality built in to kind of what we’ve always been able to do with maps so now you can see this is kind of the same a map except zoomed out and the location is a little bit Different it’s just because that’s just how maps and chunks work uh is the location uh when it zooms out it’s not always going to be in the center sometimes it might be in a corner or something like that now that we know how to do that i’m going to Get rid of this zoomed out map get out of here and we have our original map that we made if we we can just shift click this into the cryptography table or you can click it and drag it up into the top slot the bottom slot does not Work for maps that only works for things you add to a map and as you can see by the user interface you take a map you add something to the map and then you get something out of the map now remember before whenever we duplicated a map you put into the crafting Table with a blank map so if we take just another empty blank map put it in there you can see what’s going to happen we’re going to duplicate our map and just like before we have the exact same map just two of them and you can even See the map id when i hover over hasn’t changed it’s still map id number 10. now if you want to zoom out remember before you would take blank paper or just paper paper can’t be written you would take paper and you would surround a map now you only just need a single Bit of paper and you can see that the gui will show you that it’s going to zoom out so you can see more of the map once again we pull that out and you it’s the map that we had before which was zoomed out and we can load out this area If we want and they’re very similar it’s all the exact same thing now i will say that there is a little bit of bugginess right now in snapshots like when i drop this in and i drop in a piece of paper it should say scaling two to one instead of one to one Underneath the id um it says it there once you actually pull it out and and and get it back which is kind of annoying another thing is if you remember uh we could get a ton of different uh versions of the map so if i If i like did that 17 times you know or if i put put it around no that doesn’t happen you only get a two out and you kind of have to drag them back over oh wait this looks like a bug so you’re putting two in you should get three out Uh oh weird it left one in okay yeah see so it’s a little bit different than uh if i put three in and i get two out i’ll leave two in okay that’s very at least it’s working but it’s just not as as it’s not exactly the same also It’ll show you uh what it’s gonna do uh before you even like put an extra map in there that’s really neat um but uh let me tell you one extra feature of these maps which is pretty pretty cool and new to the cartography table and That is to use a glass pane to lock a map and this does not work with any colored uh glass panes it’s only the pure clear glass pane so we have this map we’re going to just go ahead and drop it in and this is the one that we Were originally working with let me get uh okay yeah get out of here and actually let me duplicate that oh using the creative pick click and uh so we have our original map and just to remind you this is what it looks like we’re going to drop that in there and then Instead of paper or an empty map we’re going to take a glass pane and you can see that there’s a little lock symbol that shows up this is brand new it does not work with any colored glass panes so you can’t do that just needs to be Normal glass and then you get it out and now this is uh wait what okay one of these is locked yeah that one’s locked well that is weird they stacked for a half second that was super weird okay the map right here this one is locked this one is not locked and You can tell that because you can hover over them and it will tell you so what is the difference well if we update the map area with this big old red square here and that should be a square yep uh then if we open up a normal map it will Update and it will show the new square but a locked map will not and the map stays how it is the map data does not change if the world changes why would you want something like this you might want it because you’re taking a snapshot of a build that you know might get Destroyed or might get built on later and you don’t want the map to update when you take a look at it later or maybe you have a map in an item frame and you don’t and there’s other versions of the map so if one gets updated the Other one will get updated uh if you lock it then it won’t get updated another really cool feature that a lot of people are mentioning it happens to do with banners banners are super awesome and add some really cool functionality to maps and all you have To do is take a banner this is my unlocked map right click it and then bam you have a little banner symbol on your map down there in the corner and for whatever reason uh this will also work with locked maps so if you right click There is a little banner on the locked map it doesn’t automatically transfer over remember in the beginning and if you want to remove the banner you just right click on the banner again and now that is removed um it’s uh uh that uh you have to go up and click it with a Locked map it doesn’t just automatically update if the maps happen to be uh the same thing another really cool thing that people don’t know about that i just want to i want to give you guys an extra little tip here’s an extra little tidbit which is pretty cool uh you can rename a Banner and let’s say this is yellow’s base yellow base uh and then we can set it on the ground and let’s do it maybe a little bit further away from that other banner and then we take it or click it and now there is text on the map isn’t that Super duper neat so that’s another little tip that a lot of people uh don’t know about so if you want to uh make your map show like different little areas uh you can do that with banners and once you destroy them uh they’re also gone as Well so that is everything to do new with the cartography table just a reminder that this is a snapshot build of minecraft which means that this is the future of what minecraft could be it is still in development and things could change so there may be a little itty Bitty things that are different uh in the future so i just take uh everything that i said with a grain of salt if you’re watching this like five months from now or like a year from now thanks so much for watching this episode of omg craft if you enjoyed it please give this Video a big ol thumbs up if you want to catch future
