Our First Pillager Raid! ▫ The Hardcore Survival Guide [Ep.14] ▫ Minecraft 1.17

Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the hardcore survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day today we’re gonna get rid of these iron golems because honestly there’s just a few too many of them traipsing around the village i’ve kind

Of had enough of them and the villagers will probably end up just making more so in the meantime we can use these to get a little bit of iron i’m going to make a soul campfire which is kind of different to a regular campfire it’s made with

Soul sand instead of coal and does twice the damage that a regular campfire will and then if i’ve got leads around here if i don’t i can probably just make some out of some slime balls and string we are just going to lead the golems onto a

Campfire to kill them and nine golems hitbox is so large that we can probably put them in a space surrounded by fences on top of a campfire like this and if the golem just deleted that fence from existence we should just be able to drag them into here and they’ll take damage

On the campfire no matter where they’re standing so i’m going to place a block here let’s say we use the lead on this guy we just drag him over the fences here and he starts taking damage on the campfire once he’s inside of this fenced off area he’s just going to take damage

On that soul campfire until he dies and it’s a bit tragic obviously you see them cracking and everything it’s like a bit of a traumatic experience but honestly there are so many iron golems in this village now they almost outnumber the villagers and frankly it’s been kind of

Distracting for me because i’ve had to worry about doing my intro where i like punched the sky a couple of times i always worry that there’s going to be an iron golem that just wanders in front of me i punch him he hits me twice and that’s my hardcore series over so we’re

Just going to deal with these guys in the meantime and more iron golems will show up in the near future and with that we’ve destroyed basically every iron golem in the village except for the one who’s inside my hobbit hole because i honestly think it’ll be too much for

Pain to move him at this point but don’t worry the iron golems will almost certainly be back i can imagine the villagers will probably have made a couple of them before the end of this episode but in the meantime we’re gonna go away and find another village because

The thing i want to do in today’s episode is start a raid by the way just for the record we got 44 iron out of that a few poppies as well which i’ll throw in the chest here and we’ll leave the leads around here somewhere as well

And i’m pretty much geared up for a raid already i’ve got decent armor i don’t have netherrite but i have diamond at least it’s got plenty of protection enchantments just in case i get into any trouble but really the only two things i’m concerned about when starting a raid

Is having a decent bow preferably with power and infinity flame doesn’t hurt either and having a bucket of lava with those two things or at least a decent bow and a good supply of arrows you should be able to take care of a raid no problem we will also be bringing a bed

With us because we will need a bed to skip through the night and make sure we don’t encounter any mobs other than the mobs that are part of the raid and now we need to go exploring a little bit to find both a village and a nearby pillager outpost villagers can spawn in

Five biomes of the world which are also the same biomes which can spawn at pillager outposts and those are planes tiger savannah desert and tundra the snowy biomes of the world i’m gonna start with this tiger which is obviously closer to our spawn point mostly because

It’s the nearest thing to the area we’ve been working in with that plains village but i don’t really want to involve the plains village in a raid if i can help it and the tiger is the closest other biome that could potentially have a village we may not encounter a pillager

Outpost in this biome it looks like we are reaching the outer edge of the tiger and coming out into a regular forest over here but it’s worth staying high up in the air to look out for telltale signs of either tiger villages often have campfires in them so you can

Sometimes see a plume of smoke rising in the distance that will indicate there is a tiger village nearby and it’s also worth noting that i’ve now updated the world to the latest version of minecraft which just released on tuesday this is minecraft 1.17.1 there are a couple of bug fixes and

Minor changes in this update most notably i think that the drowned now have a higher chance of dropping copper ingots so there’s potential for us to do a drowned farm at some point in future and get higher rates of copper there’s also a couple of fixes related to emerald ore generation in mountains

Diamond generation in the rest of the world but nothing we really need to concern ourselves with too much the major updates only come in the full numerical releases not these point 1.2 kind of releases so for the most part our world is going to be largely unchanged one other small repercussion

Of this is that i’m not working with the optifine mod anymore because optifine takes a little while to update between these smaller releases we might see an optifine release as soon as a couple of days from now but to be honest i’m fine just working with vanilla 1.17.1 in the

Meantime but we interrupt our search for a pillager outpost to bring you some very exciting news i found this ruined portal on the shore of a really quite cool forest area next to the ocean here and when i looked in the chest guess what we found friends it’s an enchanted

Golden apple and some really awesome gold gear actually like it’s quite rare to find one of several different types of tool and two pieces of gold armor plus one of those so i brought my ender chest with me that is going to go in the

End of chest and of course we need to remember if we’re going to bring the ender chest with us elsewhere make sure to have silk touch on a pickaxe so we can retrieve it again without it being broken down into obsidian i’m gonna leave the rest of this gold equipment

Here because i don’t really need any of it right now but that is honestly a pretty spectacular find enchanted golden apples are pretty rare to discover in any situation so i’m pretty happy with that we’ve also got a shipwreck right here which could potentially have some

Good loot in it we’ve already got moss blocks of course but there could be a chance for a buried treasure map and a few other things got a handful of emeralds gold nuggets and iron we could also go looking in the holes down here for the buried treasure map which seems

To have actually been buried itself and it looks like we’ve got one in there but yeah we’re gonna throw all of that stuff into the end of chester we’ll deal with that later we need to stay on our primary objective which is finding a village and a pillager outpost

Well not too far away from that portal and shipwreck here is the village component this looks like a lovely idyllic plains village i am thinking this could potentially be a good sight for our raid actually it’s defended on a few sides by the water here the enemy

Would only be able to come from the mountains over there or any of the planes biome around here so i’m thinking maybe we can use this as the site of our raid yeah there’s definitely some interesting generation here the village is sort of half generated going up into

The mountains here and they’ve got two village bells one of which i think i will probably take but the other one we can use to ring this will cause a lot of villagers to run home to their houses and then we can use some of the wood i

Brought with me to simply block up the door and this guy looks like he wants in with the other two so yeah let’s let him go in there as well and they can just get safely shut in there while the iron golem patrols on the roof looks like

This librarian here didn’t get the memo so let me ring the bell for him as well yep there we go he’s paired to a nearby bed and should end up going into this house right here uh he thought about it there for a second but he’s decided

Against it my friend get into the house the pillagers are coming soon there we go finally he’s in the house all right and now we’ve locked him in there he should be totally fine there are torches in there making sure that nothing is going to spawn and it looks like we

Don’t have too many other villagers here in the village so that’s totally fine i’m going to just break a block out here and put the lectern in there with him so he keeps that as his profession because i don’t know he might have some good trades and if not honestly we need to

Have a villager with a workstation nearby for this to really count as a village for the sake of the raid so we’re going to leave that there and we’re going to go out in search of a pillager outpost which hopefully should be somewhere nearby but actually before

We do that we need to take the coordinates of this village a negative 1730 650 it’s looking pretty accessible from here i think let’s go and look for a pillager outpost because we need to get the bad omen status effect ruined portal check number two right here on

The edge of this dark oak forest it at the very least has a gold block which i will grab while i’m here so let’s see what we’ve got in there regular golden apple okay still pretty good and a golden pickaxe with silk touch which will get you about 40 blocks of natural

Stone before it just breaks but yeah not bad two for two on golden apples today one of them slightly more enchanted than the other one but still not bad and a lot of people seem to get really excited about the fact that i’d seen a tall birch forest biome in the background of

The first episode we were in this world and why i didn’t get excited about these and to be honest i find them a little bit bland but i do also find them quite frequently we just stumbled into another one here we’re about 2 500 blocks out to the west and

Yeah they’re just not that interesting to me and at this point i have been so far around the world that i’ve actually found a desert biome and a mesa that are closer than the ones that we actually just made a nether portal out to so this right here is actually a fairly small

Desert biome but it’s definitely a desert biome because we have a desert temple here it’s right next to a giant mesa i’m going to call off the search for the pillager outpost for now we’re going to raid this temple and see if we get anything good another golden apple

Very nice bunch of the usual stuff sand string and bones and yeah looks like a lot of bones a couple of saddles not really a whole lot to write home about but man again three for three on golden apples maybe this is minecraft’s way of

Telling me i should be a little bit more cautious about this raid huh but hey it’s not every day you dig out of a desert temple directly into a mesa so it’s got that going for it still no sign of a pillager outpost though the search continues finally oh my goodness and

We’ve actually found the first snow biome of the world i don’t think i’ve encountered a snow planes even when i was scouring the world’s oceans looking for a desert in the first place i can’t remember if i ever stumbled upon a snowy biome but at last we have found a

Pillager outpost now these are one of the two places pillagers and pillager raid captains can spawn the raid captains are notable by the fact that they have an ominous banner on their heads almost as like part of the uniform and these guys are the crossbow wielding pillagers that you may be sort of

Familiar with you attack a couple of them they’re not that hard to take down but they have strength in numbers getting surrounded by these guys all wielding crossbows is no joke and they occasionally show up as pillager patrols which is the other way that you can run

Into a captain oh we got an ice spikes biome over there as well that’s probably worth checking out at some point but the pillager patrols are the other place you can encounter a raid captain and to be perfectly honest it might have been faster for me to wait around for a

Patrol to spawn near that village because as far as where we are right now our coordinates are pretty far off we are at yeah negative 500 negative 1800 that is a fair distance away from where we set up that village for a raid now it’s actually kind of worth either

Killing a few pillages around these outposts or running away and coming back so that they despawn and respawn the pillagers because right now i can’t actually see a banner toting pillager around here i don’t see a raid captain and we will need to kill one of those in

Order to get bad omen so while these guys stand around outside and may occasionally follow me into the snow biome i think i’m gonna just take a quick trip over here to see what’s up because honestly the ice plane spikes biome is one of my favorite biomes in

All of minecraft no other biome has such striking terrain and such immediately interesting formations of packed ice it’s so cool looking at one of these and we may even have an igloo or a snow plains village a tundra village somewhere around here that we could start a raid from that outpost instead

Of traipsing all the way back to that village i prepped earlier so you know what i’m going to take a quick jaunt around this planes biome and we’ll get back to the outpost if we can’t find anything oh look at this we do have an igloo now this presents an interesting

Opportunity if and only if there is a trap door underneath here which alas there is not occasionally these igloos will have a trap door underneath the carpet that leads down to a subterranean research station where you can find a villager and a zombie villager and it explains a little about how villages are

Cured from their zombified state which means there’s at least one potentially two villagers around that you can use to start a raid basically at that igloo i’ve seen it done before and it’s pretty funny but nope looks like we don’t have a snow plains village around here and

There might be one out there in the forest but i think it’s probably best if we head back to the village that we prepped earlier but before that we need to return to this outpost find a villager with a banner and get ourselves that bad omen effect and once again it

Looks like there aren’t many pillages around here that have it so we’ll have to eliminate some from the fringes around the outside here and hopefully we should be able to get bad omen from one that respawns there we go one just spawned right next to the outpost over

Here so i’m gonna try and draw him away from the outpost there we go he’s got aggro on us now just in case any other pillar just decide to team up it looks like he did bring a friend with him but that’s okay we can eliminate the friend

Here and we just need to take this guy out for our first voluntary exile advancement our first ominous banner and as we can see in the top right corner of the screen the bad omen status effect if you open the potions hud right now you’ll see that bad omen doesn’t have a

Countdown that means it lasts for longer than 60 minutes so we have over an hour with this bad omen status effect you can’t dispel it with milk if you get it by accident but if you want to get it like we did then it’s now time to head

To a village and start a raid basically as soon as we walk into a village with the bad omen status effect a raid will trigger and then we’re going to be in a fight for our lives and so after a long trek the village is just behind that forest i just paused to

Smelt a bit of iron that i’d gathered on the way so i could make myself a fresh shield because i noticed my shield was getting a bit low on durability and i felt like we might need a shield at some point in this escapade but for now we

Should be able to just run on into the village and start the raid i’m a little bit apprehensive about this because it’s been a while since i did one of these in a hardcore but i have a feeling we should be able to win the day if we are

Smart about it and naturally you can make a few extra preparations bring strength potions all that kind of stuff if you want to the iron golems around here should help a little bit as well but my first task is going to be to get up as high as possible probably onto the

Roofs of one of these houses because from there we can mount our defense of the village i think i might even end a pearl to this house over here and that should give us a good start because looks like the pillagers are coming down from the mountaintop this first wave is

Only going to include a few pillages and a couple of vindicators and the vindicators are potentially the most dangerous ones in the group because they attack very hard using melee attacks specifically axes so we’re gonna have to make sure we stay clear of them but we’re setting them on

Fire the golem is dealing a little extra damage taking care of the rest and of course we can go in between waves and collect up a few of the drops if we want to the vindicators will drop emeralds and their axes the pillagers will drop crossbows it’ll all drop experience and

We’re ready for wave 2. you should hear a horn sound from whichever direction the pillagers come from which is nice and easy to detect and yeah we are on target with the bow shots today lighting these vindicators on fire that is very good stuff now don’t worry too much about taking out

The guys with the banners during the raid itself because that’s not going to increase your bad omen rating but if you end up taking out more than one patrol leader before you start a raid you’ll actually find that the raid gets a little bit more intense there will be an

Additional wave at the end for each additional level of bad omens so you can have up to i think like 12 waves of a raid if you have bad omen 5. this raid with bad omen 1 should just be i think seven waves in total and the last one is

Going to be the most dangerous because that’s when evokers and ravages start to come into play the ravager over here though is not going to be too difficult to deal with we’ve just got to shoot him a few times and let the golem do the

Rest of the damage for us there we go looks like they’re getting tossed up in the air oh and it looks like i did just anger the golems so that’d be a problem for me if the golem was able to get up here that’s another great reason to stay

Up here on the houses though because we if we accidentally targeted that golem then that would be a big problem for me but nope looks like our next wave is on the way and can see them coming over the ridge over here they will just spawn anywhere in the vicinity of the village

On the surface and naturally they’re going to come towards the village center to target the villagers themselves the golem has been killed off by these last few pillagers unfortunately but that means a little bit of spare iron down there and all we need to do is take out

The remaining pillagers who cannot get to the villagers who are safely locked inside the houses so far the only injuries i’ve sustained have been a couple of crossbow bolts and i should mention that the main reason we want to do the raid is for the waves which contain evokers because evokers will

Drop something fairly significant for hardcore players and that is a totem of undying something which can save you from an untimely death in a world like this and as of either this wave or the next one yep there it goes that guy over there running around at

Lightning speed is our first evoker and we kind of want to prioritize taking him out as soon as possible really because he is going to spawn vexes and vexes are some of the worst enemies to deal with in this raid there we go we’ve taken out the avoca but the vexes are

Unfortunately able to phase through the ground so we’re gonna have to be judicious in taking those out as well they can fly through blocks and they hit pretty hard because they’re equipped with iron swords so that makes them the most difficult part of the raid to deal

With aside from the ravages but we don’t need to face those hand to hand on the ground so we should be fine taking care of this one the totem of undying is down there on the ground and i’m gonna hop down and claim that in just a second but

First of all i think we need to sleep now i’m gonna probably have to peel her up from the top of this house no i don’t even though the pillages are all around me at ground level we can just sleep the night away that’s good we were far

Enough away from the raiders that they didn’t cause us to be unable to sleep let’s just fire straight downwards into these guys if we can because we don’t want to go off the roof quite yet until there’s just one or two of these left and then we can swoop in and claim that

Totem of undying there we go with just one pillager left over i’m feeling pretty confident that we can come down and pick up the totem i’m going to briefly retreat to the mountain top so we can end a pearl back up to the roof of that house because that seemed like a

Pretty defensible position so far and honestly right now if we were to just cancel the raid now that we’ve got a totem of undying i would feel perfectly fine with that because we can get a couple of other totems from the later waves of the raid but the fact is the

Raid doesn’t need to complete now we can switch the totem undying into our offhand and that will mean we are a little bit safer from anything that’s going to kill us in the next couple of waves looks like they’re all spawning on the hilltop over there there’s going to

Be one evoca in this wave and the next wave which should be the last one is potentially going to be the most dangerous because that’s the one where the avoca appears riding on a ravager there we go two easy shots takes down that evoker and i believe that is the

Only one we need to worry about in this wave of the raid so i feel a lot happier knowing he’s taken care of but as with a lot of minecraft keeping the enemies at range is honestly the best approach to dealing with one of these raids because most of

The enemies are going to be trying to deal melee damage i’m going to end a pearl over there to grab our second totem yep we’ve got two of those now and they don’t stack unfortunately so we are going to have to keep that one in our

Inventory just in case but that is my last ender pearl gonna eat a golden carrot here and maybe have the ender chest on standby in case we need that enchanted golden apple but it sounds like the next wave of the raid may have spawned on the other side of this

Mountain i heard the ominous blaring of the horn from the other side over there so i’m wondering if they are just going to be stuck over there or if they’re going to be able to come over the top of the mountain and down into the village i’ll be honest this feels

Like a little bit of a trap but i’m not seeing them coming over from the other side and a couple of them have even taken damage which i presume is a little bit of fall damage now if i can once i’ve collected up all of this stuff from

Down here i’m going to hop over the other side of this mountain and we might be able to get away with finishing the final wave of the raid by pouring lava down onto the raiders this is especially good if you’re in a defensible position like we are right now and i have a

Feeling oh there’s another half of the village over here that i didn’t even spot well that’s good news for me because since the evokers are down here i can take a couple of easy shots at them and we should just be able to take them out from range one other thing we

Can try and do since it seems like a lot of the pillagers are down below us right now is poor lava down onto them if any of them have managed to cluster around the bottom of that mountain area there then they should all just be set on fire

By running into the lava and it looks like we’re at least managing to damage the ravager that the evoker is riding although the evoker itself may be a bit of a problem here i’m gonna pick up the lava and move it over to the other side here because i feel like that’s a

Slightly more tactical location for us to pour it from there we go looks like a lot of the pillagers were running around down there but it looks like we’ve managed to get through a decent chunk of the raid health bar without taking any damage ourselves which is very good news

I can see a ravager spinning around down there looks like we’ve taken the ravager out as well i don’t see an avoca i think there’s a witch and a pillager down there but the avoca may just be laying low and they are the most dangerous part

Of these raids so i’m gonna need to be careful if i get any closer we can take this lava away now it’s probably done its job and set fire to half of the village that was apparently under this overhang let’s take a look around from

This other side where yep i can see a witch and a pillager and that is pretty much it well from this distance i can definitely take the witch out they will drink fire resistance potions once i set them on fire but all i need to do is a

Little bit more damage and the witch is taken care of but apparently somewhere down here there is still a pillager or a ravager or some sort of mob alive yet we got a pillager right there he’s just walked into the lava so we can take care of him there is

Another totem of undying around here which i would absolutely like to get if i can avoid stepping into the lava myself let’s chuck out my old shield we won’t be needing that at this point there are two raiders remaining in this final wave of the raid i don’t know

Exactly where they are i have a feeling they are still down here maybe cornered by the lava or maybe they’re just hiding in a gully somewhere that i haven’t been able to spot maybe a couple of them managed to get around here to the village yep looks like they did we have

One pillage we have two pillages and those are the final mobs of this raid one of them is going to get a shot on us the other one goes down nice and easily and the raid bar does not refill we have won a pretty decisive victory

Thanks to the tactic of just standing on a house and shooting at them with a bow but these villagers are now going to be incredibly happy with us we’ve earned the hero of the village status and if we end up seeing any of these villagers like this

Guy for example any of them that have professions will start throwing objects related to their profession at us so librarians might occasionally throw bits of paper or something like that you’ll find that other villagers like farmers will throw you food i believe stonemasons throw you clay but honestly

The hero of the village mechanic isn’t all that reliable you don’t get a huge amount of stuff from it and it was never really the point the point was to acquire these now that we have totems of undying we are able to cheat death basically anytime we are in a situation

Where we might be near death if we have a totem in our main hand or offhand we will be oh no he just threw us a book fantastic maybe he was waiting for my inventory to be a little clearer but anytime we have a totem in our main

Handle offhand we will be able to avoid death anytime you lose all of your hearts the totem provides you with a few extra hearts some regeneration some fire protection and i think even a bit of resistance so whatever is damaging you doesn’t have a chance to kill you again

Pretty much instantly and while a lot of players do rely on these in hardcore i’m not going to be carrying one in my offhand all that much i will tell you some more of my thoughts on totems of undying a little bit later but for now

I’m fine having a couple of them at least in my possessions so i know that if we’re going to go into a scary situation we can have one in our inventory if we need to swap it into our offhand at a moment’s notice we can and that will hopefully be our lifeline that

Means we don’t end up losing the world but while i have this hero of the village effect active i might as well head back to my village i think i’m heading in the right direction at least and maybe if we walk around with an open inventory we might get a few other bits

And pieces from the villagers that i’ve already curated back at the area with the hobbit holes hello villagers your hero has returned and they’re all just working right now so i’m gonna be hopping up here and putting some stuff away in chests i have a bunch of junk on

Me from the raid we’ll probably stash the totems somewhere useful like here in my ender chest so let’s put two of those in there we’ll save one on us in the meantime and of course we got some emeralds and whatnot left over as well let’s put all the wood and junk in here

I was potentially going to use some boats to trap the pillages if we needed to but looks like we didn’t really need to in the end and i think that should be enough room so as we walk around the village now we’ll find that some of the villagers decide to chuck us some

Materials that are related to their professions and they’ll also give us a few nice discounts which is going to be good if we want to do a little bit of stick trading while we are here we might also get some discounts on some diamond tools it’s not quite as good as the

Discount you get for curing a zombie villager but it’s basically like a third off some of the prices of the books here and while they won’t give you any more of the items that you trade for a single emerald it is certainly nice to have a

Couple of discounts and a little bit of free stuff so i’m going to use this to probably just buy a bunch of golden carrots from the farmer considering that i spent so much time running around looking for that pillager outpost and the village that i ran down about half

Of my supply of my stack of golden carrots that i had on me at the time so i did promise earlier to share my thoughts on totems of undying with you and honestly i think they’re really great to have especially in a hardcore world where one mistake could cost you

The entire world but the majority of the time i’m still going to be playing with a shield instead of having a totem of undying in my offhand at all times and the main reason for that is that i’m not in life-threatening situations a huge

Amount of the time and when i am i often find that having a shield and being able to block incoming attacks actually works a little bit more effectively than the totem because you can prevent damage being done to you in the first place instead of just preventing one instance

In which you could have died now if we fall in lava in the nether and i don’t have a fire resistance potion on me you better believe that i’m swapping that into my off hand to make sure that i can have enough fire resistance to get out

Of the lava lake in time but the rest of the time honestly i think a shield is going to be worth having i’m a fairly careful player i don’t tend to fall into ravines too much while i’m exploring and right now having feather falling three

On my boots and a water bucket in my hotbar makes me feel a lot more comfortable about taking full damage and every other source of damage in the game pretty much including creeper explosions piglen brutes axes and all of that stuff can be blocked using a shield at least

The axes can be blocked once and then you have enough time to run and get to a little bit of safety the type of situation in which you’re cornered and a piggling brute is bearing down on you and stun locking your shield is also not really a situation that a totem of

Undying will save you from because the totem will resurrect you only to be hit again by the piglet brute i’ve seen it happen it’s not pretty so honestly i don’t see myself using a totem undying in every episode of this series and if people ask in future why aren’t you
