Pixlriffs – Building a Base Under Lava! ▫ The Minecraft Survival Guide (Tutorial Let’s Play) [Part 256]

Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you guys are having a good day we’re starting out today in front of our wither skeleton farm where we have been taking down the fortress in the surrounding area and yes

I still have a lot more to do there but hopefully we should be able to get this farm up and running fairly soon for now though it does seem to be producing some wither skeletons I had a few blazes died in here a little while ago as well so

There is plenty going on in here already and what we’re really after now is a way for the wither skeletons to fall down to an area where the player is going to stand and then we can take care of them we can either attack them with a sword

Or maybe even in future we can take them through a nether portal to the overworld and hook them up to a charged creeper farm where one by one we can filter the skeletons in to a one-on-one confrontation with a charged creeper and then boom we get ourselves a hundred

Percent of the wither skeleton skull drops every single time and I’m looking forward to that because I would really love to have a hundred percent drop rate farm for these guys because where the skeleton skills are a little bit thin on the ground but these days it’s a little

Bit difficult to get hold of them now this is working kind of as I hoped these skeletons are being drawn towards the middle but they don’t seem to be eyeballing the iron golem all that much and yeah maybe just opening up that line of sight to him is going to help a

Little bit I will try my best to balance this out a little bit in the days and weeks to come so that you guys will have something accurate that you can follow so don’t necessarily build this design right away wait for me to sort this out or potentially consult your other

Friendly neighborhood a technical Minecrafters who will have designs like this already sort of mocked up and creative I am sure but today we are going to be looking a little bit lower down and we’re going to be looking at how you can make a base underneath lava

Primarily because right here we are at the top level of the farm or the the spawning platform here is that why 55 we’re up half a block because of the slabs around the sides here but we are basically at y equals 55 and we need to

Be down at the level of this lava lake I think in order to get the other skeletons to drop into a space and make sure that we are at least 23 blocks away from the farm self so that yet the the wither skeletons can fall down there and

Continue spawning so oh we actually have quite a few nice drops in here we cut some bones in there which is quite nice and I must have killed a ghast over this farm at some point and then the hopper minecart has picked up all of the drops

But anyway we will see what the wire level of this lava lake down here is is there a block that I can fly down to nope doesn’t look like it I guess I will try and land on this little strip of the nether fortress which is still here ah

No okay I’m in lava there we go oh we got it no panic no harm don’t worry about it okay so that is built at y equals 55 and we are at y 32 right now by my calculations that is 23 blocks so that is roughly the distance we want to

Be away from the farm however that is when you are standing on top of the lava lake and it might do us a bit of a favor to go down a little bit further in order to make sure that we can be a little bit further away from the farm so for that

We will need to get down into the lava and right here this trench is because there was a section of the nether fortress here which I have cleared away and the TNT got down there and destroyed some of the base of the pillar where there is still nether brick underneath

There before the lava came in and swallowed the entire thing up and lava will actually blast proof stuff pretty well not that you’re going to use it typically because water is a lot safer to use but you can’t really do that in the nether and right here the lava just

Hasn’t been able to form up in time to blast proof the stuff that was under there so it’s kind of falling down into a hole anyway what I want to do is to create an area underneath this farm directly underneath the area where these wither skeletons are going to be falling

Down from and that’s going to be our wither skeleton catchment area and killing area for the time being I’m just gonna take this out and then fly away there we go okay nice and easy to activate your alight for a Fromme at the lava level and it’s a good thing I have

Such good fire protection on my armor because otherwise that could be a lot worse but I’ve been doing that a lot lately I’ve kind of been getting used to it so sorry if that gave some of you guys a bit of anxiety don’t worry in

Full control over here and I also have a fire resistance potion on me because today like I said we’re gonna work out how to get a bass set up underneath the lava and so fire resistance potions are going to be our first line of protection in that

Regard but what we also need to do is figure out how we can start building down there and for that I’m gonna dig away a little area over here that’s going to be the area that the skeletons are going to drop in to get will take a

Couple of blocks because right here we can start our little lava base this is gonna be kind of fun I’ve not really done stuff like this all that much and it’s hilarious that we are doing an under lava base before we’re doing an underwater base really but here we go

What you’ll want to do is get some sort of gravity assisted blocks like sand like gravel I mean I guess anvils and stuff probably count in that but you won’t want to do this with an Beals unless you have a lot of iron and a lot

Of time on your hands but what we want to do underneath here let’s dig out one more block in each direction is drop down a few of these gravity assisted blocks and of course they’re not gonna burn up in the lava even though they are technically like falling entities at the

Time when they enter the lava that is going to start to form a pillar and there you go we have ourselves a little pillar of sand in there and that sand all the way to the bottom of the lava lake and you’ll notice that once the

Sand hits the surface like that that is your cue to move on to the next little area and if you fill up an area like this using gravity blocks like sand or gravel eventually you’ll have an area that is completely like cleared of lava

And you’ll be able to dig it out okay so the magic number here seems to be 10 let’s go 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 and that should reach the surface there yep there we go okay so we have a 10-block deep

Lava lake well that should be fine for our purposes here I’m just gonna place a few more of these sand blocks until we start to reach the surface around here as well and that’s going to be a pretty solid foundation for building a base underneath this layer of lava okay so

With that ring all made up I’m gonna come down here and we actually have a layer of blocks above the level of the lava thanks to dropping a few extra blocks here and there so I can collect those up and continue to get a bunch of blocks in the middle noting that any

Blocks you break at this point are probably going to end up being destroyed by the lava thanks to you know item entities getting destroyed by lava but not these blocks that we are throwing down here so sooner or later we should start to bottom out on the lower reaches of this

Yep there we go we are seeing a little bit of that lava disappear fantastic so now we should be able to dig all the way down to the netherrack floor that exists underneath these lava lakes and of course we’re gonna do this somewhat carefully because there is lava

Surrounding us on all sides remember we’ve got that fire resistance potion in here if we need it but once we dig down a couple more blocks here there we go we are at netherrack and underneath here is a bedrock floor in a similar kind of formation to the bedrock ceiling that

Exists in the nether or the bedrock floor that exists in the overworld you can’t dig down any further than that but right now we are standing at y equals 20 in the middle of a lava lake in the nether and we seem to be doing just fine

There might even be pockets of lava hidden around here as there is in much of the rest of the nether terrain but if we can assume that the rest of this lava lake is roughly speaking at like y equals 32 we can start to dig around

Here and now we are starting to create a base underneath the lava itself and obviously while you are digging around it’s important to make sure that you know if you’re using an efficiency pickaxe you don’t dig too far upwards and there are telltale lava drips here

And there as a clear sign that there is lava directly above you and you should not break open the ceiling like that don’t worry we’ve got blocks on the hotbar that will be enough to stop any small larvae spillages for now but of course we can do some cool stuff right

Here we could replace this ceiling with glass and a good way to do this if you’re on Java edition is to hold the blocks in your offhand so when you break a block with your main hand you can start to replace it like that and yep I

Need to hop up on a block there just to make sure that I’m not gonna get surrounded by lava immediately but yeah if you break more than one block at a time obviously only to do a little bit of spam clicking but if you can replace the

Blocks one at a time like that for example you can end up with a really neat-looking lava ceiling which will also provide plenty of light to make sure hostile mobs from the nether don’t tend to spawn in here although that’s probably just gonna be zombie pigman and zombie pigman

Can spawn in any light level so naturally what you will want to do is set up a crafting craft yourself some unburnable slabs and start to slab this area out remember that our purpose here though is to make sure those wither skeletons have somewhere to fall down into so we are

Gonna be rigging this up as a kind of like drop collection area for the wither skeletons it’s gonna be directly under this area where they’re gonna be falling down we should probably widen out the entry that we have here but down here at the bottom of the world we will probably

Want to set up some sort of nether portal for easy access to the overworld if we want it although remember that it’s not gonna really link up to the overworld base that we have it’s going to link up to somewhere else in the overworld and if you are starting a

Nether portal at y equals 17 it’s probably going to come out in a cave somewhere on the overworld surface so bear in mind that you’re probably going to be in a cave if you start a nether portal this low down and you haven’t set up the linked portal on the opposite

Side in the overworld already it’s also at noting that if you take out any of the blocks underneath these gravity affected blocks like sand or gravel then yeah you’re gonna have a stream of lava falling down on top of you and it might even widen out to three wide so I

Recommend leaving a little bit of space either side of a three wide gap you probably want it at least five wide to make sure you’ve got some room to escape if you need to because if you end up replacing any of these blocks which can

Be done but you have to do it pretty fast you’re gonna want to make sure that you have room to get out of here in order to get to escape the lava now our plan here of course is to use this as a chamber to dispatch our wither skeletons

But if you’re in a PvP context if you’re kind of trying to hide from other players underneath lava might actually be a really useful place to build your base it’s pretty well defended it’s not the kind of thing people are gonna notice from the surface if you go up

Here and cover this entire thing over with lava again and while a nether portal in the overworld might be a pretty obvious thing you could always hide that somewhere in a cave you could hide it underneath a lava lake in a cave or something like that if you wanted to

Which is gonna be easier to dig down to but having it underneath lava in the nether is probably a pretty good move too but if you’re going to build in the nether then building underneath a distant lava lake is going to be a pretty effective defense against anybody

Who wants to come and radio base you might have to take a few precautions though to make sure they can’t just let lava in and burn all of your stuff so remember what blocks are burnable and what aren’t you don’t want to be using things like wood and leaves and that

Kind of stuff especially if fights fire spread is enabled but remember there are definitely some blocks in the game that don’t burn even though they are made of wood things like chests will not burn crafting tables likewise that they won’t be affected they can potentially spread

Fire though so be aware of that but I don’t think it is possible for them to be set alight and then destroyed so actually having crafting tables and stuff down here should be perfectly safe we might want to put a slab over the top of them though because they might still

Count as a spawner will block as well for a base like this though having a back entrance a place to escape to is probably going to be quite important as well and we’ve concealed piston doors and stuff like that you can do a whole lot so we might end up making something

Like that that’s going to be flush with the nether rack around here but it’s going to be you know leads to a tunnel that digs up onto one of the islands of netherrack that are in the surrounding area in this case though I’m not going to worry too much about that I’ll

Probably just make a nether portal down here have an access ladder or something like that but if you wanted this to be completely concealed that would be the way to go for now though I can probably if I’m able to take off there we go just

Soar out of the farm this way and make some more preparations to get the wither skeletons down here and already I can tell that the farm is working because I’ve just come up from working down there to replace some of the blocks and we have a few wither skeletons down here

Already unfortunately like I said they aren’t able to walk out over this gap yet because there are trap doors that we need to place in here to make sure that they feel like they can walk out over this block but they’re definitely being lured over here by the iron golem I can

Probably deal with them a couple of sword swipes will take care of them for now but yeah this does seem like it’s working pretty well and that is a good distance away being down there it does also seem like we might need to make a platform for them to fall onto so they

Don’t immediately die of full damage because 23 blocks will do for most mobs I think wither skeletons oh we got a skull amazing yes I’ll take that now one thing that’s worth noting here is that fire resistance potions can last for up to eight minutes and that is incredibly useful

When you’re building like this navigating in lava can be a little bit disorienting but if each other fire resistance potion you are going to be safe from the effects of lava and that’s what’s going to allow us to widen out this platform because I can go all the

Way down here and while visibility is reduced you should be able to see the bottom floor of netherrack swimming interview about now yep there it is okay so I can actually start placing blocks at once again it’s really really difficult to see this so apologies that

You can’t quite see it but I am placing blocks as you can see I’m holding down the right mouse button and once we get to the surface I should be able to place a block there and we’ve got ourselves a pillar of stone brick with I guess like

20 seconds or so of the fire resistance potion used there yeah we can probably widen this out a little bit more using that technique and while you’re just kind of coming down from the surface here you can actually kind of see what’s going on underneath there were then

Magma cubes a look really big when they’re right up close to you but they’re actually only the small ones so that’s fine so you can sort of get a view of the bottom floor as you come down for the first time and then once you get down there you can always pillar

Back up using stone bricks like so once again make sure this is some sort of non burnable block but hey get out of here you the magma cubes being around here is actually kind of a good thing though because we will need a little bit more magma cream if we’re going to keep

Making fire resistance potions like this remember of course if you don’t have access to magma cubes if it’s kind of difficult to find them you can always make magma cream out of blaze powder and slime balls and that’s going to be vital for the fire resistance potions as the

Main ingredient I got to admit I am kind of curious now to see if night vision potions would improve the visibility of a base underneath lava I don’t think it would I don’t think you could really see all that much even if you had a night

Vision down here but it might be worth to try one of these days we could try that sometime but the lesson here really is that if you are well enough prepared lava is really nothing to be afraid of just keep an eye on that fire resistance

Timer to make sure you aren’t gonna die in the lava and the fire resistance runs out keep a spare fire resistance potion on you at all times if you can and you’re gonna have a much better time of building a base underneath lava like this or building something that’s going

To help you with a nether based farm so I’m gonna continue working on this I’m gonna continue a little bit of magma diving it down here and I will see you guys on the other side hey folks welcome back so here we are on top of the wither skeleton farm I’ve

Been doing some work down below this thing and I kind of wish I could reach these cows from here but apparently seriously are you kidding me the second with a skull in this video I’m not even not even trying to get these at this point alright you come over here and he

Again get running away from the dogs it’s just the funniest thing that these guys do all right let’s hop down here let’s see if we can get this guy a growed on us and let’s see if we can get ourselves a third wither skull in this

Video I feel like I need to go and fight some withers fairly soon hello come over here come over here stop stop running away from the dogs and fight me there we go ah shame we didn’t get a wither skull after all never mind but we have one

That we can put in the end a chest at least I’ve got like ten of these things need to use them up soon but anyway if we come down here I have been doing a little bit of work on this little underground section and under lava

Section in fact and I’ve sort of mocked up an area that could be turned into a pretty cool base if you wanted to I haven’t done much with it yet but there is an opportunity for us to return to this place and do something with it in future if we like

Let’s hop down here and already you can see that I’ve added some black glass around the outside here to give us a quick look at the lava as you fall down and when you come down here I tried to make a skeleton face in the back there

Out of stairs kind of threw that together on the fly while larva was pouring in from the walls but I think it did a decent enough job and there would be a slab here so that we can have the wither skeletons on a slab up here that

We can swipe at them with a sword take care of them and get a few more with the skeleton skulls and then underneath there we’d have a row of hoppers that can potentially grab all of the items alternatively what we can do is set up a

Nether portal here and send them all to the surface in the overworld where they can hopefully end up in a charged creeper farm of some design further down the line but around here is the base itself we have these you know bone pillars in the walls with the black

Concrete around the outside and black concrete kind of became the motif of this and it is dripping from spots here and there but a cool thing about this is glass doesn’t actually let the lava drips through where other blocks may do so in this case we’ve got full blocks

And slabs around here that are letting these lava drips through I think it adds a little bit of atmosphere but you could always add another layer of blocks up there if you wanted to but there in the black concrete does lead down this staircase to something kind of

Special which I’ll show you in a second but now we have ourselves a couple of must-have accessories for being down here at the bottom underneath the lava lake for a start if you spend a lot of time in lava this is something that I have actually learned recently every

Second you spend in lava actually adds a couple of ticks to a timer that calculates how long you’re going to be on fire for after you’ve stepped out of the lava so after spending a bit of time diving in lava I came up with a couple of minutes of that fire resistance

Potion left but I stayed on fire for about a minute and a half afterwards and I was a little bit worried that I was gonna stay on fire and start taking fire damage even after I’d got out of the lava a couple of minutes ago so what

You’re gonna want to do is make sure you stay well stocked with fire resistance potions which I have here in this brewing stand and get yourself a cauldron you might be kind of confused about seeing water in the nether a cauldron is basically the only way you

Can have it so if you catch fire while you’re out here on the surface it is possible to put yourself out by stepping in a cauldron now I made it look kind of easy it is actually kind of difficult to get into the hitbox of a cauldron sometimes you basically have to walk

Straight up the central line and come to a stop or right over the top of the cauldron but if you’re able to step in that you can actually step in there and put yourself out it is as though you are standing in water which is very very

Useful if you want water in the nether if you want to be able to put yourself out from being on fire it’s also possible to use this as a source of water for brewing potions of course but then of course you have to remember that you’ll need to you know fill that back

Up somehow and you can’t necessarily do that unless you go to a the overworld and get a bucket of water and then put that water into the cauldron so it may be that you have to you know do that a couple of times so if you want to keep

This for emergencies when you’re going to potentially you know put out fires and stuff like that you might not want to use this cauldron all the time or you might want to have one cauldron that you use for emergencies and another that you use for brewing now I thought about some

Ways that we could turn this into a really interesting base and my first thought was dig down and show off the fact that we have some bedrock down here and the bedrock looks like it is just kind of out here what I have done is create

This room now I really like the way this room came together obviously there’s not a huge amount to it yet it’s just black walls made out of black concrete here a little bit of stone brick stairs leading down here and nether portal so that we can get back to the overworld that just

Leads out to a cave somewhere on the surface about 4000 blocks away from spawn and the ceiling hasn’t really had anything done with it yet I want to do something with the ceiling but down here we have a layer of black glass over the bedrock and what that does is provide a

Floor that you can walk on while still giving the illusion that you are walking you’re kind of floating around the bedrock here and I’ve done my best to remove any netherrack that was hiding in the bedrock there’s probably still a little bit of it peeking out here and

There around the outsides but what you’ve got is this really interesting illusion where it sort of feels like you are floating on the bedrock and this is thank partly thanks to the fact that I work with Optifine and Optifine has a connected glass texture so you don’t get

To see the grid lines in the glass but even then it would look pretty cool to have this whole section floored with glass and just have the top section of the bedrock kind of meeting the surface here so you can walk straight across it to the nether portal which thankfully

Had a three wide area where there wasn’t any bedrock that I could just easily slot in and there the portal I’m gonna need to put some slabs or some transparent blocks over the top of the nether portal or maybe build a design around it so that stuff doesn’t spawn up

There but bedrock and glass are both not spawn herbal blocks so this isn’t going to affect the spawn rates at the farm in any way and when you come back up here there are no spawn wall blocks inside of here because this entire floor is made

Out of slabs as you’ll be able to tell from the fact that we have a cauldron embedded partly into the floor like this but this entire thing is basically spawn proof I think I could probably take the crafting table out or put a slab over it

Like I did before and this would make a really neat little base underneath the lava as it is right now I’m mainly planning to use it so that we can access the wither skeleton killing farm I will probably end up putting an entrance to this part of the base somewhere else so

That I don’t have to fly down the same spot that the wither skeletons are falling so that we can kill them and so I don’t end up getting withered myself every time I come down here but I think this is gonna be a really neat little base and of Cour

The purposes of this is to show you the possibilities of building a base underneath the lava lakes in the nether it can be done and we have done it here pretty successfully and just so you know where we are at in terms of coordinates

In the world that we are at y equals 5 which is where the bedrock is gonna start generating in the nether floor I think the lava lake started around Y equals 32 when we looked at it earlier so that’s really only down to y equals 22 you’re expecting to get the lava

Itself if it was 10 blocks deep and then below that you have all of this room that you can build a network of tunnels and you can take over the nether if you want to and if you’re careful like this and if you use transparent blocks you

Don’t even need to worry about Pigman spawning down here you can have the entire bottom section of the nether to yourself and that is where we’re gonna leave it for this episode of the Minecraft Survival Guide I do hope you enjoyed this video if you did don’t
