Hello everyone my name is Pixar IFS and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide hope you guys are having a good day today we are back over here at the charcoal generator that we built in the last episode at which has been smelting merrily away the whole time I’ve been Working on other stuff around my world and as you can see we have ourselves a good solid row of charcoal and there are still a couple in the chamber ready to be put into the furnace whenever we want to make a little bit more so this thing Was a roaring success and what I plan to do now is create the base of a giant tree around it now the reason I’m going to build a tree trunk and not a full tree is because for this kind of size you’ve got to consider the scale of These things the canopy of the tree would be way above the rest of the forest and I don’t want to build a forest of giant trees here because let’s face it this is kind of a small forest like when considered from the outside compared to some of the forest biomes You get in Minecraft that is it just that little patch around here and so any enormous tree that I build here is probably going to dwarf everything around it and I don’t really want that to happen because that would involve either rebuilding a bunch of these trees To match or it’s just gonna look out of place so I figure what we’ll do is build what used to be a giant tree perhaps but it’s just kind of the trunk of the tree and is cut off at the top either by a lightning strike or you know by by Humans kind of trying to cut the tree down a little bit for resources maybe the resources they used to build this windmill for example who can say and I like the idea of there just being a tree trunk rising out of here as a kind of natural chimney for the charcoal smoker But also as some sort of base that the forest blacksmith could live in because that’s the guy who’s going to be in charge of stoking the fires of the charcoal smoker in the lore of this world so what we’re going to start off with is a perimeter around here just a Small outline of where we want the tree to be but remember this is gonna be a natural design so we kind of want this to look as natural as possible which is difficult with Minecraft blocks because you are building with cubes the entire time so I’m gonna do my best to give you Guys a bit of a tutorial about how to start worming natural shapes when you’re building you know actual organic kind of stuff which is not something I have a huge amount of experience in but we’ve done custom trees before and if these carrots will stop jumping off the cliffs That would be great scaring me I think we can make this work I think this should be a pretty fun build to take on so as is usually the case with these things it’s a good idea to consider your materials first what have you got a large amount of because you’re gonna be Building with a lot of blocks and they’re all going to be wood trunk blocks wood logs or in fact probably also some of these like the actual wood blocks that the bark on all six sight is going to be quite helpful to you here so I recommend grabbing a bunch of those I’ve already made it a quick selection here in the Shilka box of spruce oak and dark oak because those are the three wood types that go pretty well together a hundred percent of the time as far as I’m concerned they are all you know different shades of brown they’ve got Different kind of undertones to them like thee the dark oak one is a little bit more kind of gray and and feels a little bit more sort of monotone I guess the spruce wood has elements of red in it if you look at some of the pixels in This texture they do have that very reddish brown and then the regular oak is quite a good neutral as well and the regular oak tends to sort of look like what you encounter in first day minecraft so there’s usually that sense of kind of home involved with it in a Weird psychological wave it kind of I kind of enjoy using that and also oak and dark oak complement each other very well if you want to have light and dark shades of the same tree and personally the way I like to build trees is usually just with one wood type however with Something a little bit larger and something that’s kind of been through the wars especially if it’s going to have been struck by lightening at some point in the past it might help to have some dark oak up there as kind of burn and blackened sections of the tree or Maybe even down in the shadier parts of the tree the roots and so forth might be a little bit more saturated with that dark soily kind of color that might necessitate using some dark oak likewise maybe some areas of the tree get a little bit sun-bleached You know trees when you look at them in nature around us don’t tend to all look one color they tend to have a lot of different colors incorporated into them so we’re going to try our best to do that sort of artfully but for now I’ve got a bunch of spruce Logs I think the spruce is going to be the base for this tree we will also bring some spruce wood and we can always make some of that up but the thing about spruce wood blocks is of course that you get a small loss when you make these Because you’re putting four logs in and under getting three logs back so a stack of sixty-four suddenly becomes 48 and you’ve got fewer building blocks to work with so use that sparingly if you can it might be a little early in the process but you might also want to consider what Else you can add to the tree to really make it stand out and feel special in this case why not do something with mushroom blocks growing from the sides of a tree because fungi typically grow on trees quite regularly and you could do that with just these small mushrooms Themselves or alternatively you could have a larger growth of mushroom coming out from an upper branch or somewhere where it’s going to be able to grow towards the light a little bit likewise you could have stuff like vines which I don’t think I have any of over here in My plants chests I’ve got ferns and we’ve got kelp and lily pads and stuff like that but I don’t seem to have any vines anywhere so we might have to go and farm some vines a little bit later on around the base of the tree it might Help to have some stuff like podzol and coarse dirt to give the impression that the light doesn’t really touch some sections around the tree and that the grass is having trouble growing or that the tree has dropped leaves and pods all is covering the ground there’s a few Different blocks you can use to kind of blend everything in and and merge it a little bit not to mention the fact that stone is going to play a part here the roots of trees like to wrap around stones and some of those stones might end up arising to the surface not to Mention the fact that the forest floor is not going to be all lush and carpeted with grass there might be some stone that we can work in there as well and now of course we have the option to include stuff like mossy cobblestone which is now available in slab variants As of this most recent update as well so we’ve got a lot of stuff to work with here I’m probably gonna come back and fall to the storage system quite a lot but for now I think we need to get on and build the base of the tree actually Before we get started on that a quick shortcut that some people like to use if you’re building a giant tree and you just you know what sort of perimeter you want chances are you might have a decent amount of spruce saplings or jungle saplings or something like that that you Can arrange in patches around the arrow side of where you want your treat Gosei for example we might want a 2 by 2 here and a 2 by 2 here maybe kind of bring it around in a circle at the back like so and then you can bonemeal each Of these in turn now right here because we’re using spruce trees and we’re playing in java addition is going to generate quite a lot of puzzle but if we bonemeal each of these in turn like so creating these giant spruce trees which will happily grow next to each other Maybe we can grow that one there as well for a little bit of a an inside corner although it’s taking a lot of bonemeal to grow it right now because the leaves all want to generate in this area but look at these giant trees for example those have all grown at different Heights and they’re already pretty large so not only does this give you a huge amount of building material if you just want to chop these down and use them to build something custom from scratch but also if you’re looking to build the perimeter of a giant tree you can’t go Far wrong with just creating a circle of these and then adding to it on the outside there’s no reason you can’t do that if you want to build something that is you know tens or hundreds of blocks tall and you can go up there to the top Of these trees you can place for dirt down so you can put more saplings and then you can grow another giant tree on top of that if you want to there are some really great shortcuts you can take to building something on this scale very very quickly which is why tree bases I Think are quite popular because a lot of the time you can grow them just from a few saplings without too much fuss and a lot of custom block placement what I have in mind for my tree though is something a little bit more custom placed and definitely not this tall so I’m going to take the rest of this down just for some spare building material and when we come back we’ll start building that tree okay so I’ve gone ahead and made a start already and it’s interesting that with the changes in elevation of the terrain around here even if you are building a Regular circle it actually doesn’t quite look like a circle even when you look at it from above and that’s gonna work in our favor I think because one of the things about organic stuff when you’re building it is that it shouldn’t look perfect it really shouldn’t look like a Perfect circle because that’s not how organic stuff typically grows especially with trees because trees have lots of roots and offshoots and and wardeness about the trunk and there’s so many different things that you can apply to it so you want to get an idea of the general area you’re working with by Building something like a circle first and foremost but after that we need to make some pretty significant changes right now I just free handed this circle it wasn’t all that difficult to work out a circle around this area but it’s just like five blocks along two blocks and Then a diagonal and then two blocks and then flight blocks along again but because as I said the the elevation changes here are actually making the amount of blocks are you say I’m doing like a three high wall that three high wall kind of moves up a step there and It makes it look slightly out of place from outside anyway so those might be the areas that we want to consider how the root structure of this tree would grow because we want to kind of pinch the circle outwards a little bit say for example over here like just past the Diagonal because you don’t want these things to look too symmetrical and I’ll probably take down this tree as well thinking about it because we might also need some leaves but this is currently just in the way and I’ve cleared out a little bit of space around here as well What we want to do is pull out a section of the tree maybe to about say here I think and we’re not gonna make it like a perfect diagonal but we can shape this as though it is a root supporting the larger trunk of the tree now let’s just Do something like that for now it’s typically going to have a kind of triangular curved sort of shape coming out at an angle like so and remember that of course we don’t want to be operating on like strict diagonals here or or building cubes out of the side of This thing we do want it to feel natural and organic if it helps you look up reference images for trees and if you have a specific type of tree in mind even better because there are huge variety of trees out there some of them will grow trunks which are fairly Straight like oak trees in real life can be represented quite well by these regular minecraft trees because despite the fact that you know they don’t have roots branching out from the bottom the trunks of oak trees are fairly straight by contrast to that look up images of Fig trees because fig trees have some of the most interesting trunks I’ve ever seen they’re all kind of nulled and twisted and they look like an nth from Lord of the Rings or something it’s like it’s really interesting some of the shapes you get there are trees that grow Split trunks there are trees like the one is at the bottom of my garden actually which grow from a single stump but have like multiple trunks that come out from a single base and you’ll end up with a few different like offshoots of a trunk which are all quite large they’re All kind of like a foot in diameter so you’ll tend to get different varieties of trees and what we’re going to be building here is the trunk of a fairly straightforward tree but if you want to make it a little bit more interesting consider putting in some more natural Features like splitting the trunk halfway up and having it go into two separate canopies that go to one side and the other and right now we’re just going to be blocking out these roots with the straightforward spruce logs before we start placing spruce wood with the bark to conceal these end textures Of the logs but don’t overthink stuff like that because typically it depends which angle you’re viewing the tree from anyway for example if I’m looking at it from here I can’t see any of those log end textures at all so it makes no difference to me whether you’re using Spruce wood or spruce logs the the overall appearance is going to be the same and of course if you really want to hollow this stuff out then from the inside you can probably take away some of these logs here and there as well if you want to have like a little alcove Here I’ll put a window in here or something like that if somebody has actually made this their home personally I want this to look pretty solid from the outside maybe we’ll put a couple of windows in further up once we decided what the the living quarters in here is Going to be oh and the other thing is that I’ve put this whole circle slightly off-center so the front here actually has a little bit more room around the redstone mechanism we’ve built here then the back does and that’s really just for reasons of space and the fact that I didn’t want This mechanism to be in my face as soon as I walked in the door I want it to be accessible but I don’t want it to limit the amount of space I have at the front here for I don’t know like if this if the person living here has like a shop Counter or something like that even you can put that before you put the Redstone mechanism or they can have it concealed behind here as a secret or something like that so give yourself a few options and maybe consider building your circle slightly offset from what you want it’s Centered when you walk in but it’s slightly off-center when you look at it from the side and typically when I build custom tree stuff like this I build it with all of the logs facing the same direction so in this case all of the logs are placed vertically it’s quite Easy to place them that way all you need to do is kind of pillar up in specific areas and you can kind of build organically like that anyway but personally I think it looks a lot better if you don’t have the textures kind of going every which way if you have Upwards sort of vertical textures like this try and keep them vertical as much as possible instead of having the tree bark kind of go off at angles like this and maybe for you that feels a little bit more compelling especially if you can hide these in textures by using the Wood logs but I really think it makes a huge difference having all of this stuff feel like it’s it feels like it’s all part of the same tree that way and if we look at this half of the tree from the air now it’s already starting to look a Lot more natural just getting a few roots around the outside at random places and varying up the size a little bit as well sometimes they’re going to be large roots that stretch out sometimes they’re going to be thick but stay close to the trunk of the tree and You can always build up little additional areas around here as well bear in mind though that this is going to require a lot of wood blocks so if you don’t have some kind of tree farm set up or at least the the axe durability required to bring down a Whole bunch of spruce trees or oak trees or whatever you want to build this out of then maybe consider setting that stuff up before we start on a project like this and remember you’ll want to have that organic feel going all the way up the tree too so remember to put in a Little bit more element of and to make sure that you don’t have too many squared off flat sections sometimes those will just happen naturally and there isn’t much you can do about them but really you probably want to be building sections like this where there’s like one or two blocks that are Stepped up or step down from the blocks around them and then when it comes in towards the center like so using leaves just to place these tree logs in a kind of upwards facing pattern once again we end up with a flat wall behind that but one that’s already got a more organic Shape and these are shapes that you can follow all the way up the structure of the tree as it sort of bends inwards if you want to and remember that tree trunks are also not going to grow vertically even at this size when you know verticality is quite important it’s Still going to grow inwards or it’s going to curve to the left or to the right a little bit and that is all part of making the shape of the tree what it is and at this point it might be a good idea to get some dirt or get some Netherrack or some something that you can use as a scaffolding and framing block that can be easily removed afterwards something that inste mines is usually preferable so stuff like netherrack and dirt is a good example and just wireframe exactly where you want the shape of the tree to go you Want to maybe have a few kind of natural curves in it and you can use the nether Akal dirt just to kind of make a skeleton of the tree inside if you like and so using netherrack and going every couple of blocks or so we can figure out The angles that we want the tree to go out we can move some of this stuff inwards a little bit towards the center because remember this is where the the kind of chimney is going to be formed out of the tree trunk and we want it to Go a little higher I think probably around the top of this tree is the highest I really want to go but at this point I also want the tree to bend outwards at the top because if it’s been struck from above by lightning it’s going to kind of peel outwards a little Bit once it reaches the top and so here and here we’re probably gonna have a section where it comes in words and then folds outwards again in a sort of hopefully a fairly organic shape it’s gonna look really weird with the netherrack being there for now but trust Me this is one of the best ways of framing out a larger structure like this get the foundations laid and get the shapes figured out with stuff like this and tweak it and that way you’ll have to make way fewer changes when it comes to actually laying down all the blocks that Are going to be there permanently and once you’ve done your wire framing if you like the way those shapes have turned out replace the single strands that you’ve built out of netherrack with the wood itself and then you can go out take a look at it and decide if you want To fill those sections in and I think that’s looking pretty good for what I want I think we can change up some of the blocks towards the top maybe even incorporate some stripped wood if it’s been struck by lightening up there and we could incorporate some strip wood Maybe here and there in the trunk itself but I don’t really like the way stripped spruce looks personally I think it kind of looks a little bit weird so I’m gonna stick with the regular spruce logs for now we’re gonna do this all the way around the outside of the tree but this Is of course another time-consuming process something that’s gonna take a little while so I’m gonna cut away and I’ll bring you guys back when we’ve got a little bit more of the tree built hey folks welcome back and welcome to the tree stump this whole thing has taken Maybe a couple of hours to build we managed to do a little bit more on a stream and now I’m putting the finishing touches to it I think it’s come together really well we’ve got a lot of detail in here and the tree could be a little bit More kind of natural looking I guess I don’t know it’s it’s difficult to balance natural-looking with like less chaotic when it comes to Minecraft typically you get lots and lots of these blocky areas and you could simplify that down to just a few areas where it slopes Inwards and then like a straighter trunk or something like that but I wanted this thing to look pretty large and like the stump of a tree and as you can see the coal blocks around here are supposed to indicate where the tree has been struck by lightening and Sections of it have been burned almost as though they were like flash-fried into charcoal to begin with not that you can have blocks of charcoal in Minecraft but there you go anyway we can come in here and as you can see the interior is also decorated I will show you this from Above in a minute but we have a sort of miniature tree stump around here concealing some of the Redstone mechanism that was kind of important to me that the Redstone wasn’t just hanging out but we also have a neat little spiral staircase which takes you up to a Kind of mezzanine floor up here where you can see down towards the entrance but also this potentially be the living quarters for whoever ends up living here the kind of the the blacksmith who is tending the charcoal smoker and around the back here we’d still have an area of the natural Landscape that we built the tree around in the first place but the majority that has been cleared away and we could always use that area for something different we can make it a storage room underneath the the mezzanine floor or something like that I like the fact that We’ve got mossy cobblestone slabs now it really helps add some detail to this area it helps look like inside for example it looks like they are reinforced but around the outside if you use mossy cobble sparingly it can look like the roots have kind of turned up The earth and some stones and stuff have risen to the surface which is a detail I really like I also really like the fact that we can add in dark oak wood around the outside of these coal blocks as though some of the wood has been spared from being turned into charcoal Immediately but it’s kind of you know it’s been affected by the heat a little bit it’s been dried out or it’s been I don’t know it’s it feels like dead wood on the outside of the tree which is still sort of alive and as we come up here You’ll also notice there’s a branch sticking out to one side as you come up here there is a view from the top where you can see rings in the tree and that’s another thing I really wanted to show is that this tree is kind of old and as you May know the more rings a tree has the older it is because it kind of grows outwards from the middle like that and so I couldn’t exactly fit a huge amount of rings in here and I’m thinking about maybe kind of you know bringing this in slightly more and making this top Section a little bit more round because there’s not really a whole lot you can do with Minecraft blocks to stop it looking a little bit square but I love the fact that we could put rings in the top here as though as a proper tree stump and down here of course we have For camp fires blazing merrily away on top of hay bales and raising this enormous plume of smoke into the sky and having four of them arranged like this just makes it look like one huge column of smoke which I think from the outside looks pretty special especially at night I think this effect looks really really cool at night seeing the smoke rise up there into the sky and hay bales increase the height of the smoke plume to make sure that it can be seen from miles around and I really like the way this came together it looks a little bit Blocky a little bit gnarled and I think the branch is out there just sparingly using branches we don’t want to do too much in terms of branches because this is meant to be like a fairly low part of what would have been an enormous tree that kind of stretched up to the heavens At that point we don’t really want it to be there instead we want it to look like an old tree that has been you know struck by lightning and abandoned and then repurposed as a charcoal burner by the forest Smith and you know what I think it came together great I’m really Happy with how this build turned out we can add a few more details around the outside and one thing I wanted to do is add some mushrooms growing on the side of it and so we’re gonna do that right now I’m gonna hop in the bed and make Sure that we can sleep the night away cause yeah this this forest is it’s easy for stuff to spawn around here as you can hear from the fact that we now have a baby zombie standing on the bushes in the morning get out get in the lake also Another kind of amusing fact about this area is that if I stand in any of the water around here it’s close enough to the sunken cave we have in the swamp biome that I get conduit power so not that I need it right now but it’s just Kind of funny that is that close anyway around the outside here I’m thinking cuz we’ve got the branch on this side I think we might make the mushroom around here on this site and I have a few blocks to help us with that we’ve got some mushroom stem and some Brown Mushroom blocks but it’s also worth planting a few regular mushrooms around here where we can now remember mushrooms don’t like having a lot of skylight above them unless they are planted somewhere like on podzol for example so we can put a couple of mushrooms around The base here or we could click around a little bit until we find a block that isn’t directly exposed to the sky and potentially put a few yeah we can put a mushroom on there for example cuz it’s got the overhang of that oak tree I think the rest of this is potentially Going to be too bright and of course on a regular tree if you are building a giant sized tree then the canopy would kind of overshadow this area so you could easily plant some mushrooms around that and it would really help the decor but I think a couple of those around There maybe one over here like so just really adds a pop of color to it which it’s it’s dialy missing because this is a big brown heap aside from the occasional leaves and so forth so yeah let’s add a mushroom to the side of this let’s pop a mushroom Stem coming out of the side here and with mushrooms you can kind of grow them however you want to really because mushrooms in nature are such a strange and organic and and diverse range of fungi you can you can do some really interesting stuff with them in this case I’m gonna keep it a sort of flat mushroom but we’re gonna curve it around at the corners and the edges just a little bit just to give it that kind of overhang droopy quality to it and yeah I like I like having that on the side of The tree we could grow a couple more of these upwards as well because fungi tend to grow in clusters there we go some giant mushrooms growing out the side of the tree that’s really not too bad and also if we wanted to we could put in a Few mushroom blocks and then break them away again to get that spore texture on the underside and that that’s really cool looking I like that I like that a lot we’ll do that with the other ones as well and now we’ve used the mushroom blocks to create a little bit of shade Underneath here we might even be able to plant a couple of regular brown mushrooms here and there as well just to kind of give the impression that some of this stuff is still in the process of growing yes yes I like that I like that a lot around the other sides we could Potentially do some some kind of fake larger mushrooms by placing stuff like end rods and a mushroom block on top of them like that and that can look kind of nice like like one of the red mushrooms has grown a stage but isn’t quite all the way to becoming a giant mushroom yet And that has the added benefit of adding a light source around here so obviously we couldn’t grow any of the normal mushrooms but it does light the place up and prevent zombies and creepers from spawning around here but I think they’re from a simple redstone charcoal burner Over here in the forest we have turned this into a really neat tree base and I hope you guys enjoyed this episode thank you so much for watching the Minecraft Survival Guide my name
