Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we are finally going to move our sheep here out of the sheep farm because we’re going to set up an automatic farm which will

Harvest wool for us in the background whilst we’re doing other stuff around our spawn area but first we need to make sure that we have one sheep of every color and that means making sure we have every color of dye naturally there are going to be some colors that we get from

The environment around us it’s very easy to find poppies and dandelions they occur in basically every biome and if you haven’t found them already you can bone meal the grass and chances are you’ll be able to get poppies and dandelions out of there if we break a

Couple of each of those down into red and yellow die you’ll see that we get to combine those to make orange it’s pretty standard for pigments right the green dye that we got from a desert village can be acquired by smelting some cactus in a furnace and we can even combine

That with the blue dye from a Cornflower or some lapis in order to make cyan dye we can also combine red and blue to make purple if we break down a couple of bones into bone meal and then turn the bone meal into white dye from there it

Opens up a whole range of other colors including light blue we get pink there are actually several different crafting recipes for magenta you can combine purple and pink to get it as well and I think we’ll do that so we can save the red dye here it seems like I never

Brought back any cactus from the desert after all I think I was more concerned about the camels at the time so let’s go and get some more Cactus there’s plenty of cactus around so we can grab some of that we can even bring back a little bit

Of sand so that we can grow the cactus at home and I guess we’ll set up a little temporary cactus farm down here we’ll make a more automatic one in the near future but this other piece of cactus we will throw in the furnace so we can get one more character screen

Then we can combine that with some white dye to make lime dye lime dye can also be acquired by cooking sea pickles in a furnace and while we can make cyan die from combining green and blue we can also get that from these pitcher plants that the sniffers provide us with so I’m

Gonna break one of those goes down so at this point we’ve got all of the major colors we are still missing Brown which we will get in a second from cocoa beans we’ve got white and there’s also light gray gray and black light gray can be

Found very easily by breaking any of the white looking flowers in a plane’s biome those will give you light gray regardless of which ones they are lily of the valley is the only flower that will give you white it’s also possible to get black dye from another flower

Called the Wither Rose but at this stage in the game we’re not ready for that hit breaking down the ink sacks into black dye we can of course combine those with white in order to get gray and the only one we’re missing is brown brown dye as

I mentioned comes from cocoa beans and in order to grow more cocoa beans we will need to grab some jungle wood locks I’ll grab another log as a quick example here because cocoa beans can be found on Jungle logs they will grow on Jungle logs but they will not grow on any other

Type of log I’m clicking here and nothing is happening so the cocoa beans can only be grown on jungle wood but they can be grown on all four faces of a jungle wood log and if you want to accelerate their growth you can even bone meal the cocoa beans so we can get

A couple of these up to their full size where they will give us three cocoa beans each we can replant those and we can let them grow while we carry on with the episode but at last my inventory has all 16 colors of dye which means we can

Account for the colors of sheep that we haven’t already got remember that if you are short on certain dyes it is even possible to combine some of these colors in the same way that the crafting recipes combine by breeding two sheep of those different colors so if you breed a

Green and a blue sheep you might get a cyan sheep if you breed a white and a black sheep you’re likely to get one of the colors of gray and any sheep can be dyed any other color meaning that if you’ve already got a bunch of orange

Sheep we can dye one of those blue with no ill effects in fact I seem to have the most orange sheep out of all of them for some reason but we’ve got a few of the others as well and now by turning this red sheep black we have every

Single color of sheep represented in here so I think it’s time to start building the farm the incredible thing about this sheep farm is that it’s very simple and will be running for a long time once you’ve completed the setup phase so we’re going to dig out a couple of blocks here to

Place a storage container I’m just going to be using a barrel for the majority of these if you want a slightly larger inventory you could use a double chest but we want to hop up facing into that we need to place a rail on top of this

Just by holding shift and clicking there and then we’re going to add a hopper Minecart onto the top of that now if you’re able to look below the hopper Minecart you’ll be able to see that you can still Target that rail underneath it and remove it like so dropping the

Hopper Minecart into position unfortunately you can’t place Minecarts without rails so you need to do that as part of the setup just collect the rail from the chest then we are going to use a piston to push a dirt block or a grass block if you have them down over the top

Of this Hopper Minecart so it actually blends with the dirt block this is possible because Hopper Minecarts are entities they are not like blocks as such so a block and an entity can occupy the same space so we can place a piston facing downwards Above This dirt block

We place a lever there to activate the Piston once and now anything that drops onto this dirt block is going to be picked up by the hopper Minecart and deposited in the barrel and the thing we’re going to have on top of this dirt block is actually the Sheep themselves

Because sheep in order to replenish their wool need to eat a block of grass so the grass around here is eventually going to grow over this dirt block and when the Sheep eats the grass it will turn into a dirt block changing the block type effectively causing a block

Update and that is something we can detect using an observer facing the Observer into the back of that dirt block there will actually detect when it changes to grass and when it turns back into dirt after the Sheep eats it this will send a pulse of redstone to the

Block behind it which we’re going to make into a crafted block one that’s not part of the natural environment so that we can decorate a little bit later if we want to we’re going to place some redstone dust on top of that which will activate whenever this Observer detects

That change as you can see the dirt block that was here has now turned into a grass block in front of this Redstone Dust directly on top of the Observer we’re going to place a dispenser and this dispenser is going to be full of shears much like our honeycomb Farm over

There and every time the Observer here detects that the grass block has turned into a dirt block the shears are going to fire from this dispenser and they’re going to Shear the Sheep that’s standing in front of them so naturally it will make sense to have a set of shears in

Here so that we can immediately start Gathering wool from the first sheep we put in and now to indicate the color of the sheep we’re putting in here we’re going to surround this with red dyed glass we’re probably going to put some in the front here we’ll remove that one

So we can access the barrel I might put some kind of solid backing on here like some Spruce planks and we’re going to leave a trap door over the top of this so that we can open it up and get to the Sheep if we need to of course this might

Look a little bit weird overhanging the barrel like this we can put some stairs in to support it and we can still reach the barrel like so but with a lead in hand we should be able to drag our red sheep out of the pen especially if we’re

Able to gain a little elevation here there we go it was just able to drag them over the top of there and if they follow us up the hill and onto the top of this Farm it should be possible to detach the lead from them and just nudge

Them down into the hole in fact they just walked in there of their own volition that’s great the lead should pop off into the barrel the Sheep should be safe in there and once they eat the grass it’ll start harvesting their wool automatically since the enclosure here

Is two blocks high on all sides the Sheep should not be able to escape but the trapdoor over the top of it will make sure of that and there we go the Sheep should eat the grass the dispenser detects that thanks to the Observer and automatically shears the Sheep the next

Thing that should happen is that the grass will grow back over that dirt block and it might be a good idea to put torches nearby just to make sure there is some natural light to allow the grass to grow even during the night time another thing you might want to consider

Is making the rest of the blocks around the outside of the farm transparent as well because we’ve used these solid Spruce blocks they’ve actually blocked light to the grass below and reverted it to dirt which means that there are fewer grass blocks in these surroundings for

The grass in the center to regrow from since these glass blocks are completely transparent it doesn’t have the same effect meaning that grass can grow underneath the glass blocks which is one of the reason I’m using these for the farm in the first place the other reason

Being on Java Edition all she had sheep appear white there is no way of telling what color wool this sheep has until it eats the grass again at which point the dispenser is going to fire again and they’re going to be sheared again so it’s not really going to help much so

Color cutting these pens is a really great way of making sure that when you go to the barrel you know which color wool you are getting as you can see the grass in here has already grown and that fired the dispenser once but we don’t have to worry about the dispenser using

Durability because the shears will only decrease in durability if they are successful in using the shears on whatever’s in front of them so for example this set of shears is only going to decrease in durability when it shears the Sheep I think just so it’s slightly

Easier for us to get to the barrel here I’m going to reposition the barrel like so and we’re going to carve out the dirt in front of this we’re going to move over a couple of blocks and we’re going to repeat the same process this time for

The orange sheep and we’ll create a series of these little modules where the Sheep is going to be standing in the farm and each of their colors of wool is going to be harvested for these individual barrels this is also a really great time to remember that you can use

Partly damaged bows in the recipe for a dispenser it may not appear here in the crafting recipe book but you can click on the recipe for a dropper and simply place or shift-click the bow into the crafting table to create a dispenser and there we go that’s the second module

Built this time for the orange sheep and we have some shears back here in the dispenser so we should be getting a decent supply of orange wool and I’m fairly certain that this Farm has already started collecting from the red sheep as well so these Farms are going

To be very effective for a long time as long as we keep the dispensers filled up with shears and they’re going to be fairly light on resources as well all you need for an individual module of the farm is a dispenser a piece of redstone dust and a Observer a hopper a hopper

Minecart some sort of storage block and some building blocks to go around it make sure you have transparent blocks for the case containing the sheep that way the grass can grow back nice and easily now make sure you have a bit of lighting around just to make sure the

Grass can grow back even during the night time when there is no daylight in order to do that naturally if you want to make a module for all 16 colors of wool which is what we’re going to do today you will need 16 of each of those

Components so it starts to get a little bit more expensive as you scale up the project but it’s nice and easy to set up here in the early game as long as you have a healthy supply of iron at this point after building that giant storage system my iron reserves are running a

Little low but that’s nothing that a short mining trip can’t fix and I didn’t even finish clearing out that huge iron vein we discovered a few episodes ago so I’m going to go ahead and build 14 more of these Farm modules and I’ll come back

To you when we’ve got a module for every single color of sheep hey folks welcome back and Welcome to our brand new 16 color sheep farm where all of the sheep have been sheared and are gonna look like this for a very long time because now I’ve managed to get

Together enough iron thanks to another quick mining trip that in each of these dispensers I’ll show you around the back of one of the more accessible ones in every dispenser here there are nine sets of shears and you’ll remember that each set of shears has 238 durability meaning

That with nine sets of shears I did a little bit of quick maths earlier a full dispenser of nine shears will produce over their lifespan about 33 stacks of wool now of course a single chest or a barrel in this case can store 27 snacks the hopper that’s feeding into the

Barrel can store an additional five Stacks taking us to 32 and of course there is a hopper Minecart with an inventory of its own another five slots worth of inventory capable of holding five more Stacks so you will not lose a single scrap of wool from this wool Farm

In the lifespan of those sets of Shears of course if you want instantaneous access to all of that you might want to put a double chest in here likewise if you want to prolong the wool Farms operation for a little bit longer if you want it to continue even past the

Lifespan of these sets of shears and their durability you could for example put a hopper facing into the side of this dispenser and have a chest on top of that filled with 27 more sets of shears plus five more in each of the Hoppers and then you could guarantee

That this thing would probably be running for longer than the lifespan of Your World alternatively if you are incredibly dedicated and this is not even a step that I’m willing to go to you could enchant each of these sets of shears with Unbreaking three now you can’t do that in the enchantment table

So you would need to find a source of Unbreaking three books like a villager who’d be able to trade you Unbreaking and you could combine that in an anvil with a set of shears and then those sets of shears would last about four times as long and you’re looking at something

Like 130 something stacks of wool which is a great deal of course so we’re not going to go to those lengths quite yet but in the meantime this Farm has been working just while I’ve been sitting around and talking about it and so now we all find that just hanging around our

Starter house area around here which we plan on doing a lot more projects in you’ll just find wool naturally accumulating in these barrels I’m actually going to take these first stacks of wool away with me because the whole purpose of this exercise has been to get us a great deal of different

Colors of wool and if you think back to the last handful of episodes we’ve encountered a few places where having a big supply of wool is going to be really useful the deep dark biome and the ancient city that we spied down in the caverns underneath our Mountain are

Places where wool can come in incredibly useful for muffling your footsteps so that the skulk sensors don’t hear you as you’re exploring the Deep dark the tunnels that we’ve been digging in the nether to find ancient debris and upgrade our tools to the netherite tier can be exploded using Beds which are

Primarily made of wood and wool but I’m not going to be thinking about either of those applications right away instead I’m going to be focusing on what we can do with wool here in our storage system now when I planned out the storage system I had a chest over here which was

Going to be filled up with white wool and let me clarify that’s not just because white wool is a default wool color that you can dye different colors because in this most recent update to Minecraft Mojang actually made it so that you can dye any color of wool any

Other color if I grab some yellow dye here and I put a couple of green wool in here it is possible to re-dye wool which it wasn’t before Minecraft 1.20 so that is a recent change that has been applied to the game so the white wool here in my

Storage system needn’t be just the default blank canvas wool that we’re saving in order to diet any other color that’s simply because white sheep are going to be the most common sheep that we encounter out there in the world and while we obviously want to have all 16

Colors of wool at our disposal we’re going to keep that stored over there at the wool Farm where it is produced instead of storing it in bulk here in the storage system for now because what I would like to do is create these multi-colored different displays of the

Different colors of wool on a couple of the corners of our storage system here we’re going to put them on the two walls either side here these two little alcoves and we’re also going to dig out a 4×4 area so that I can plant them here

In the floor although looking at it now it does kind of bug me that this section here isn’t going to line up with the two walls so much I like the cherry wood accent around here I’m probably going to remove this and hmm I’m wondering if

Maybe we can make up for that by bringing the cherry wood accent around there yeah maybe something like that works but what I’m thinking we’re going to do here is have a selection of chests attached to each of the different colors and for now these will will serve as our

Storage for different colored materials because there are lots of things in Minecraft that have 16 colors that we probably want to store in more space than we can get out of one barrel like if I want to have 40 stacks of black stained glass I don’t really have

Anywhere to put it in bulk in this storage system it’s not going to go in this Barrel above the plain glass chest and glass cannot be restained after it has been stained one specific color unlike wool that can be re-dyed so what if we put all of the 16 colors of glass

And Terra Cotta and wool and concrete and concrete powder and glazed terracotta in these 4×4 displays that’s the way I’m thinking about storing these and for now the colors are subtle they kind of blend into the background behind the chest which is kind of neat it’s like a little disguised rainbow in there

Which I kind of like as a wool decoration but later on we will have the ability to color code our storage in a much more significant way and for those of you who played Minecraft before yes I am talking talking about shulker boxes those are transportable chests basically

Chests that you can break and they can leave their content inside the chest as you pick it up and carry it around with you in your inventory and those can be color coded in 16 different colors So eventually we’ll be able to take one down from the wall leaving the colored

Wool behind and we’ll be able to see where we put that shulker box back when we’re done with our cyan terracotta or our purple concrete or whatever but for the time being at least we’re going to set up these walls and I guess floor panels of the 16 different colors of

Wall blocks and we’re not going to do these on all four sides because frankly I don’t think there are quite enough 16 color items in Minecraft that we’re going to need all of these extra panels as well so maybe we’ll do something a little bit different on these two

Corners but I think these two opposite us here especially since that aligns with the area where all of the base materials are going to be stored for all of the you know concrete powder comes from Sand and Gravel which is over here and wool and glass are going to be on

This side and terracotta is stored down there as well I think ultimately it makes sense to store them all in this fashion so there we go it kind of has like a patchwork quilt or a children’s crash kind of vibe especially with all this baby pink around but you know what

I quite like it I think it’s going to look a little more subtle once we have the chests in there a bit less subtle once we’ve swapped them out for the proper shulker Box Storage and in the meantime I’m gonna figure out something else to go on these opposite walls maybe

Something a bit more muted in Wood tones kind of like a patchwork of the log end textures or something like that I think that’ll be fairly appropriate but for now with all of that used up I am going to return these stacks of wool to the farm since they’re going to be stored

Here long term but it seems like the farm has been doing its job in my absence as long as we are within this area within a close enough boundary as long as we keep the Sheep within our simulation distance which is the slider that’s set here in our video settings 12

Chunks and as long as this Farm is within roughly a 128 block radius of us so the grass can get those random ticks that help with crop growth and grass spread then the farm should continue to operate whilst we’re in this area either way it just adds a little bit more color

To the view for right now and we can figure out some sort of more artistic way to cover it up other than the rain I guess but in future maybe we’ll consider doing a bit of terraforming or doing a bigger surround for this area just got to make sure that there’s enough light
