Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the Minecraft Survival Guide I hope you guys are having a good day today we’re starting off outside the composting facility that I made in the last episode and I’ve been doing a little bit of this off-camera just running these farms and composting The contents and I haven’t really spent all that much in terms of the resources from in here but we have ourselves about a stack of bone meal for each which is pretty great considering these are not the most productive farms they’re pretty good but they’re not like optimized for Maximum output or anything I mean the the cactus farm is just a kind of passive thing running in the background likewise these and by the way these melon and pumpkin farms can actually be condensed down a little bit now in terms of their design because they didn’t Expect to do that I forgot about the crouching thing melon stalks and pumpkin stalks no longer need to have an air block above them in the latest update that was a bug in the game that got fixed so from now on you can actually build your mound and pumpkin farms a Little bit more compact and we could probably fit in a couple of extra rows in the size of this pumpkin farm but I’m not going to worry about that today because today we’re going to look at something completely different and sort of the same we’re going to be looking at Another village workstation with some redstone capabilities but this time we’re taking a look at lecterns lecterns are going to be everybody’s favorite workstation because it’s the one that gets you librarian villages and that’s how you get your mending books but also lecterns have a fantastic variety of Uses for the average player not the least of which is that they look incredibly pretty you can have them as like hotel reception counters and that kind of thing they’ve got the capacity to have books placed on them which looks fantastic in and of itself is the first Time we’ve seen a 3d model book outside of an enchanting table and to be honest I love the lectern so much for this it’s got so much character and it can be part of a build like this where there’s clearly like a reason to put a book out On a table that kind of thing you can even remove and replace the book if you want to for example this book and quill we can write whatever we want in it let’s just throw in some text I guess and then you can put that down there and You can read it from the lectern without having to take the book up into your venturi so this is one of those things that is going to be perfect for people who want to inject a little bit of story into their world a little bit of law you Can have adventure maps’ have text and instructions for the player written on these lecterns instead of having to cope with the minimal amount of text that you can put on signs and you can write knowledge and and little tips for how to play the map and that kind of thing all In these books and of course they don’t have to be editable books you can always sign them and they will continue to perform the same function once they are in electon so perfect for that kind of thing but in case you weren’t aware already lecterns also have some really Interesting redstone uses and let me grab a redstone lamp here to give you a quick example cuz I’m pretty sure this will work if you have a lectern with a book that has multiple pages and it does have to have more than one page for this to work it doesn’t have any redstone Functionality when you just put a book in take a book out that doesn’t trigger any kind of redstone current from the lectern itself now if we add a second page here so I’ll just type second page in this one you got one of two and two Of two there we go now let’s pop that back in at the stand and as you’ll be able to see take a look at this redstone lamp over here when I change the page the lamp lights up very briefly the lectern is actually emitting a redstone Pulse when I turn the pages and it only does that once and it doesn’t matter which page I’m on this book could have hundreds and hundreds of pages each one would produce the same redstone current it is a very very short pulse of I believe fifteen signal strength it’s the Easy way to test that of course is to put a line of fifteen redstone dust coming out of this lectern and seeing if a lamp lights up at the end of it so let’s pop down a redstone lamp over here like so and let’s see if that lights up When we turn a page in the book it does okay great so that is a full redstone signal coming out of this lectern it’s funny it doesn’t say that anywhere on the wiki it doesn’t specify the exact signal strength but yeah that is 15 redstone signal coming out for a single Tick pulse so that’s gonna be possible to power Pistons with and all kinds of other stuff and here’s how you can tell that it’s a one tick pulse by the way if you have a sticky piston with a block attached to it and connect it to the lectern with some redstone wire a Want ik pulse will actually detach a block that a sticky piston is pushing from the piston head instead of doing what sticky pistons should do and be able to push and pull it so if we go what like that there you go it detaches from the sticky piston head and is Possible to retract it with a second one tick pulse but that is pretty much proof that this thing is only putting out a single tick because anything more than that if you add it in a little bit of extra pulse length the sticky piston would push and then pull the block bank It’s worth noting that this is barely enough time to do some other practical redstone things though for example if you had at the redstone pulse open a door for you it would only open very very briefly and then it had flap closed again because the redstone pulse is Switching it on and off so not exactly super useful to be able to open the door for the merest fraction of a second however of course if you link this up to some sort of flip flop switch for example like a piston pushing a redstone block into place you could guarantee That the door would stay open and then close it again with a flick of the book here is a very sketchy example one because I’ve had to remove the block down here this entrance it really isn’t made for stuff like this but let me let me demonstrate for you with our open Sesame’ book here in the lectern all I need to do is turn the page piston activates moves that redstone block and opens the door because the lectern is connected to the block next to the piston using a repeater and that’s sending the signal to the piston temporarily moving the redstone block Over here and opening the door for us all we need to do is flick that page back and then we can go on our way of course this does not look particularly nice but there are different configurations for this just an example while we were here in this little alcove Here’s another great example we can put together with our Open Sesame book the Castle library take this as an example right now we could have various books on the lecterns in here none of which have anything particular to say I have a couple hidden here and there and this One around the corner now has something very special about it because I’ve put together something where when you flip the open sesame’ book to open we end up with a secret staircase that could lead down to the castle dungeons and so forth so you can do a whole lot with these lecterns it Actually pretty cool and by the way this is a very very simple circuit all it happens is it takes a redstone signal out of the back and you kind of hide that from the players view unless they step up really close to the lectern they Wouldn’t be able to see it and with the the Open Sesame book what’s actually doing is sending a pulse to four sticky pistons that just have each of these blocks attached to them and so when the signal activates for the first time it pushes them out you could totally Reverse this by the way if I take the book now now it’s set to open flick it now it’s set to Sesame so you can do this basically any way around you want to anytime you turn a page of this book tada it opens up a secret stairway I like This a lot and I might actually do something with that a little bit later because I would love this this castle to have more secret passageways and stuff like that folks in the comments have already suggested making some passageways that involve the new crawling mechanics for example if you End up like jumping and crawling through here we could end up in the the Great Hall behind this little desk I like that idea and I want to do more stuff like this but I just need to find the right places to do it in terms of the the lore And the story of the place hi hello but the castle isn’t the only place that can have a library I think what I want to do is build a library over here in founders forge proper as well in the in the central town kind of close to the Blacksmith’s guild and here we can demonstrate one of the other I think the the PS de resistance of electrons one of the other fantastic properties of lecterns is that with a written book and a comparator you can send out a variable redstone signal let’s pop down a couple Of pieces of dust here to give you a quick example I guess we’ll probably put down a redstone lamp so we can measure the output as well and we’ll put a pretty long redstone wire here for example I’m not quite sure how many I just placed Down so hopefully that’s 15 or less so what we need to do is get a book and quill here and on each page we’re going to write a number we may as well just number them like the pages themselves we will come back to this numbering system A little bit later on but for right now 11 12 13 14 and finally 15 and if you don’t leave anything on page 16 when you click done it will just revert back to being a 15 page book so you don’t have to worry about overshooting that at all So when we place this here the comparator will light up and start to output a signal strength of one because the book is on page one unfortunately there is no page zero so the only way to turn off the comparator entirely is to take the book out of the Lectern but once we put it back in there you will see it starts to output power not only that but for each page it increases the redstone signal back here will increase as well and the reason I have stopped at fifteen is that that is the maximum signal strength that Redstone wire can carry so if we turn this all the way up you’ll notice yep there we go the light turned on apps well so there’s 12 pieces of redstone dust we can actually count that now and of course the power signal diminishes the further along the line you get until It reaches power 1 right here obviously we could amp that up to 15 if we wanted to meaning that one’s going to have a power of 4 and the lamp is on now the really cool thing about this is that it doesn’t have to be a 15 page book 15 is just the Maximum output it will get if you are on the last page of a book so if we deleted a few of these pages for example if we go all the way back here and we delete it from 15 down to let’s say 5 so now we Have a book with 5 pages and if we pop that in the lectern you will see that it starts off still with a power of 1 however each time we turn the pages it’s going to increase the signal strength more than it would before because it’s dividing the total signal strength of 15 Among these 5 pages and if you go all the way up to 5 the lamp still turns on because it’s still getting the full power that it was before you’re on the last page of the book therefore it’s outputting as much as it possibly can if We now reduce this down to a 2 page book if we take out pages 3 4 & 5 like so that’s now a 2 page book we still get a signal strength of 1 there we turn the page it lights up completely because it’s on the last page of the book so It’s not about how many pages you have unless you want more precise control over this all it means is that you just need to have a couple of pages and the last page is always going to get you the majority of the redstone signals so what I want to make with this is a variable enchantment setup oh hello you got a wandering trader popping by it’s gonna come and say hello so what I want to do is set up a series of sticky pistons embedded in the ground with bookshelves attached to them And what that’s gonna do is allow us to leaf through the pages of a book to decide exactly how many bookshelves we want to include in the enchantment set up normally if you have 15 bookshelves around an enchantment table you’ll end up with a maximum enchant level of 30 But sometimes it can be more beneficial to have a lower enchant level something like 28 or 26 certain enchantments will start to come up a little bit more readily there are ways to game the system a little bit when it comes to enchanting stuff and that is why sometimes having a variable enchanting Set up can be really useful and I think this is actually a really neat use of a lectern because it’s something that you can vary the output from a comparator meaning that you can activate single bookshelves at a time and it’s also something that fits with the aesthetic Of having a library in the world and having an enchanting setup and bookshelves around so we’re gonna do a little bit of orientation here I’m not quite sure where I want to put this yet but it needs to be a little bit further away from the paths so let’s say we’re Gonna have the enchantment set up like here I guess it’s probably a good place to have it we want to have each of these oh this shovel is a little bit too efficient we want to have each of the sticky pistons embedded in the ground sort of here and that way the Bookshelves will be flush with the floor and you won’t really see what’s going on with any of them but behind here we’re gonna lay down some redstone dust like so and then when this thing activates let’s use the redstone torch as an example it will activate each of these Pistons individually and with our enchanting table here it’s being blocked from these bookshelves at present but all we need to do is add in some redstone dust like so one two and three and then it starts to receive power from those bookshelves and the enchantment level will increase all right I’ll take A look at what you’ve got for sale what do you have for me nothing really all that useful gunpowder would be nice if we were one peaceful and we didn’t have creeper farms and that kind of stuff but not really interested in much of that also three emeralds for kelp when I’m Farming kelp in mass quantities over there at the ship is yes a little bit extortionate mate these guys do kind of get in the way when I want to build something though Here I am trying to get this library done and the wandering trader just path fines Over to me bringing his llamas and then they stand in the hold that I’m actually trying to dig around my enchantment tables so not exactly the most convenient time for him to show up but hopefully we should be able to get the rest of this dug out all we need to do Is surround this table here with sticky pistons and the bookshelves on the corners will also count so we basically just need to have a ring around it like so and here’s something cool you might not know about comparators they can actually detect something through a block and this is a really great thing Actually because otherwise you would always have to have the comparator directly behind the object you were trying to detect and it wouldn’t be possible to make a redstone contraptions as concealed because ultimately you would have to have a redstone component visible behind this sort of transparency that’s in the electon blocks model you’d Be able to see through it from the site whereas now with this and a site blocking the way it is still measuring the output of this book now what we can do is have the redstone comparators signal run into this block here and then the dust below it will start to pick up The signal that the comparator is outputting right now that’s a power of one so if we continue it around the outside here none of the other Pistons are going to pop up but then if we turn the page shabam we already have a full row of Books activated and then what we can do by expanding the number of pages the book has is expand the range that this has in terms of how many Pistons can be up at once so if I take this book and increase the page numbers back up to 15 To get the maximum range that we possibly have being on page one will activate a single piston being on page two will activate the next one three the next one for the next one five the next one and that’s how you get five bookshelves all feeding into your Enchantment set up at once it’s pretty neat the problem now is that if we were to add a couple of redstone dust and link it up going around the corner then it’s going to lose to power by having to power this redstone dust and this redstone dust which aren’t attached to Any of the Pistons for example if we jack this up to a power of fourteen like so it’s going to come around the corner this one here is going to be powered ten that’s power nine that’s power eight and then when we get to the one that’s actually going to activate a piston That’s now on power seven so not going to be able to continue the power all the way round the way we get around this is by allowing it to travel one more block and then adding in another comparator here and what that will do is output the same signal Strength that it takes here on this side out of this side meaning that it continues along this row with the same amount of power so previously we have this on page five and it has a power level of five going up to here where it diminishes to one and then zero if we End up turning the page one more time it actually reaches the end of this row gets taken up by this comparator and comes out the other side with the power of one which is what it input on this site meaning that you can continue this Along to the end here and then do the same thing pop in another comparator bring the rest of the redstone dust along here like so and then complete the circuit on the opposite side and I was one redstone dust short of course so the piston on the corner here is being Activated by this piece of redstone dust that one is doing nothing but it’s allowing the comparator to continue the same signal strength and so what you get is something where you can activate the bookshelves individually until you get a maximum of 15 and it looks like that one There has just run out of power but that’s okay because there’s actually 16 bookshelves in total if we were to activate this entire ring around the outside so all you need is 15 for a level 30 set up as you can see we’re getting level 30 already without this Bookshelf being in the mix so all we need to do is take back these two redstone dust dig a hole there and then pop a redstone dust in there so it activates that block when we reach a signal strength of 15 we can actually take out the piston underneath this one Entirely as we won’t need it that could be something completely different it doesn’t have to be a bookshelf at all anymore we can take that out and replace it with some stone bricks so that you have a nice little neat entrance oh except you probably want to put a slab There to make sure you don’t cut off the redstone signal maybe some stairs yeah perfect as you can see we’re still getting level 30 out of the table with that bookshelf removed and we can individually take down the bookshelves attached to the set up until you’re left With only one at the end now all that’s left to do is conceal the redstone wire around the outside which is nice and simple to do we could even make it a little bit decorative if we want to and hopefully the wandering traders llamas don’t get in the way too much while I’m Doing this but that’s gonna do it for today folks hope you enjoyed a look at the lectern and I’m sure there are so many more redstone applications that you can use this for in future for that it’s gonna be it for this episode of the Minecraft Survival Guide thank you guys so much For watching don’t forget to leave
