Hello everyone my name is pixel riffs and welcome back to the minecraft survival guide i hope you’re all having a good day in today’s episode we are going to look at player elevators because i figure while we’ve been spending a lot of time making sure that our lytro is functional and that we’ve Got all of the rockets that we could want to propel ourselves around the skies on the surface in the overworld maybe even in the nether and the end as well there are some areas in which elytra are not the most practical way of getting around areas like our drip stone cave Base here that we’ve been working on in bits and pieces over the last little while but of course flying around all of this pointed drip stone is not the easiest thing to do i mean it’s slow enough when we’ve got a couple of rockets boosting us around with elytra And yes we can navigate around this cave a reasonable amount but i think in terms of the practicality of living here more permanently and the idea of this being a fictional mining settlement where people are going to be going around mining out this entire thing not everybody in this World is going to have a set of wings they use to gracefully glide around the caverns so we’re going to look at some other player elevator designs today along with potentially making a larger construction over here that’s going to look like a more aesthetic situation like a crane elevator that’s going to be Able to carry cargo up to this central area where it can be loaded onto some sort of transport i’m not sure what that looks like yet but this is just the fiction of the world that i’m creating in my head as we work on this base and So i figured this could be a good introduction to certain types of player elevators that we can use for other applications elsewhere in the world you’re not always going to have a lightroom fireworks to hand you’re not even going to want to use elytra and fireworks some of the time and Especially when transitioning from an underground space to an overground space it isn’t always the most sensible option i’m carrying in my hand one of the things that can be a remedy to that scaffolding scaffolding is nice and easy to just throw down in the world and Break again if you want to we can throw down a single block here and if you’re looking at the side in java edition you’ll be able to hold down right click to play scaffolding as high up as you want to go this makes an easy one block solution to vertical transport both up And down which is something that some of our solutions today won’t actually do both or they will do both by two different methods but honestly moving with scaffolding is nice but it’s a little slow you find yourself climbing up through the scaffolding at a fairly slow rate the same goes for things like Ladders ladders also come with the caveat that you have to attach them to the side of blocks so you also need a bunch of solid blocks that you can attach ladders to or do you it doesn’t necessarily have to be solid blocks it just has to be something with one solid Surface meaning that we can do some pretty neat stuff with ladders today as well i keep looking at this spot down here past the shelf of this aquifer but over there by the cavern wall and going up to that second level and i’m thinking that needs some sort of elevator over There to make sure that somebody could get up and down from that area to the cavern floor where people are going to be busying around carrying crates and boxes and that kind of thing and maybe up here is where they’re pursuing a vein of this copper that they’re mining in The cave so first of all since i’ve noticed a couple of creepers walking around here and there are zombies falling out of the rafters i’m going to light things up a little bit and then from a safe spot on the floor down here using my electra to glide down a little More carefully we’re going to place a column of scaffolding all the way up to the top there and hopefully that should provide a slow if dependable way of getting up and down this cliff face but i’m thinking we can make this look a little bit cooler if we surround the Entire thing with a set of spruce pillars we can make this whole thing look like it’s a more established elevator platform not only that but by converting some of the spruce into trapped doors we can make trapdoors up the side of the scaffolding simply by jumping and placing another trap door The way we’d normally pillar up with something and closing all of these as we go down here will make it look like this whole thing is enclosed in some sort of casing and will also make it impossible for us to fall out the side of the scaffolding as we travel up which Believe me has happened to me a couple of times note that i’m crouching on the way up here that’s the only way that you can place trapdoors on top of each other without ending up opening some of the trap doors as we go i like having something more structural like this in The space i’m wondering if spruce trap doors are really the right decision here though looking at them i wonder if oak might be better or maybe a mix of the two just to show a few more gaps in the side to make it look like this thing is Kind of strung together and maybe cross braced yeah i’m thinking patches of the oak trap doors up the side of that is going to look a lot better we can even put a few trapdoors on the front of here as well although i’d like to have some Lighting or recessed in the back just to make this whole thing pop out a little bit more we could throw in a torch a lantern maybe even a shroom light or something like that if we’ve got those handy but the lanterns are in my inventory for now so i may as well throw One in the back here and conveniently there are a couple of wall cavities in here already so i think i’ll just hang a lantern in there and it can even look a little bit industrial for the player coming up to the top of this elevator incidentally if you want a much more Manual approach to a ladder like this but it suits the aesthetic of your base a little better you can actually pillar up using a set of trapdoors sort of like we’ve done to decorate the outside of this tower of scaffolding but if you wanted to standing up here you could Safely fall by just looking down and holding right click what you end up with is a set of trapdoors that are flush against the surface that you’ve placed them against or even out in the open like this because trapdoors don’t need to be attached to a Block if you want to get back up again though the process is a little bit more precise because you first have to open the trap door in front of you then you have to jump and open the trapdoors and just keep timing your right clicks to Open the trapdoor as you reach the peak of your jump it feels incredibly manual doing things that way but it might just be what you need i might even strip a couple of the logs at the base of this tower as though stuff that the miners have been holding has like scraped Against the sides of the blocks or something like that as they’ve ended up getting in here and yeah maybe just to show a little bit of wear and tear on this thing we might swap those out for dark oak logs though since i think they fit with the spruce bark better than the Stripped spruce itself does that’s a good start though and we might build a few more of these simple scaffolding towers around here to give the impression that the miners have at least a manual way of climbing up and down these areas another approach we could take to this And i think we’ll build an example over here is to do the same thing but with ladders only this time we’re going to attach the ladders to the back side of trapdoors if we have the trapdoors facing this way so that they are aligned with this block here and there is an Open full air block in front of them on this side we can actually place ladders attached to the trap doors meaning that while we can’t put a ladder against anything that is not a solid face of a block you can’t place ladders in the empty air and just have them stay there They will just break if you break the block that they’re attached to we can have them in a relatively slim space if they’re attached to the solid face of a trap door we can’t open the trapdoors during this process unfortunately because that means the ladder will just Pop right off but once again if we surround the outside of this with spruce logs then we minimize any contact with the trap doors themselves and hopefully that means that the ladders aren’t going to pop off we can’t actually reach past the ladder and right click on the trap Door the ladder takes up the entire front face of the trapdoor meaning that we’re not going to have the ladder pop off as we’re climbing it just by carelessly right clicking placing ladders onto these trapdoors now is just gonna be a matter of shift clicking them on here sneaking and making sure that You place it against the solid face of the trapdoor and if you’re holding forward it’s possible to place the ladders against the trapdoor as you climb making it nice and easy to complete this ladder once again we’re gonna do spruce logs supporting this all the way up and i think in between i’m Gonna try cross bracing it with fences where i can putting sort of random collections of fences in there so that they’re not supporting the thing all the way up can make this look a little bit more rickety but it’s still not very well lit so i think from the inside on Some of these fences we’re actually going to dangle a lantern or two and hopefully that should feel like the whole thing is well lit we can’t really put lanterns behind the trapdoors here so at least this will make it more illuminated and visible from a distance We can even throw a couple of fence gates in here and there if we want to as a little extra character those can be open and closed for a couple of other configurations and really what we’re after here is the effect of seeing this in the distance and looking at it as Part of the cave itself like part of the mining setup that we have here rather than any practical utility right now although if we wanted to get up there nice and easily and not fly up there and risk smacking our heads into the drip stone columns it’s another option that We have now where i think things are really going to kick off in terms of functionality for a player is if we start looking at water elevators and the first one of course is one that we’re going to have touched on already because we’ve seen it when we built the iron Farm we’re going to set up a column of water that’s going to transport us vertically up to the shelf above where the portal is and i think this is going to be a really neat thing to have because up here there are a couple of bits and pieces that we might want to Turn into lookout spots for the entire cave for the moment they certainly need a bit of lighting up but yeah the view from up here is even cooler than the view from our geode portal so i think we should probably make some kind of water elevator up here and i think it makes Sense to do that between our geode portal and our drip stone farm over here because that means we can just step through in between these two structures and head up to the next level of the cave and i think we’re going to make this out of copper blocks the reason Being i want more uses for copper because i have quite a lot of it and also because over at that mine they are digging copper out of the ground and using copper in the surrounding environment while obviously feels a little bit counterintuitive if they’ve just dug up all of this stuff and then They’re using it immediately but i think it kind of implies that the miners are getting hold of this stuff because it can be used for more advanced constructions and so a water elevator seems like a slightly more advanced thing than the ladders the rickety kind of wooden constructions they’ve been Using elsewhere perhaps what we’re building an elevator up to could even be some sort of foreman’s office it could be like the where the overseer of the entire mining project lives i kind of like that as an idea so we’re going to dig that into the rock a little way here I’ll get rid of all of this coal ore here first just to make sure that that’s out the way it feels a little far back here but i think we can probably build something a little bit more interesting on this ledge so yeah i like this i Think this is a decent location for it and the cut copper looks a little bit samey but when it starts to oxidize i do think that’s going to start to fill in some of the detail that i really want out of this thing now we need to dip Back through to the nether real quick to get ourselves a bit of soul sand which is luckily not too far from our portal although i need to make sure i don’t attract the attention of any ghasts on my way back now we’ll put the soul sand In the bottom here we need to have something to block the water we’re going to be placing in here so i think in keeping with the copper theme we’re going to have a pair of acacia fence gates and we’ll need a couple more sticks for that i think we could swap These out with warped wood fence gates a little later if it works for the aesthetic a little better but those are going to be blocking in the water sources that we’re going to place in here and of course water sources on top of a soul sand block is going to create A bubble elevator although instead of placing every single water source in here manually using a bucket we’re going to go all the way to the top of this thing with a single bucket of water and once we place water at the very top of this it’s going to have flowing water All the way down which if we take a trip out to the nearest ocean biome we can turn into full water sources by growing kelp up the center this does of course rely on me to find where the nearest ocean biome is the location of which currently escapes me there’s a lot of Big rivers around here there we go here’s an ocean biome let’s just grab a bunch of kelp plants from under the surface we can grow these ourselves if we want to but i think just grabbing a handful will be enough for now and then returning to our water elevator we Simply grow the kelp plant all the way up the column break it all again on the way back down and the whole thing converts into a bubble column that will propel us up to the surface and now like the formant of this project we can oversee the entire mine from here which Is pretty cool we’ll have to build something up here at some stage as for getting down right now our main option is to fall into the water like so and we are going to continue in that same vein because what goes up must come down and One way we could do that is using magma blocks which there is conveniently one of here in this cave because magma sometimes generates inside of aquifers and spaces that you can swim into inside of these flooded caves if you want to avoid taking damage from the magma Blocks make sure you hold crouch when you’re stepping on them but as we’ll see if we place a magma block at the bottom of this lake here the magma block creates the inverse of the soul sand bubble column pulling anything that is above it down you might have noticed This if you’ve ever run into a flooded nether portal in an ocean or something like that if you swim into one of these even if you’re holding jump you just end up being pulled down by the swirl of bubbles being pulled down towards the magma block so that’s certainly an Option for the other side of our water elevator which i’ve just now noticed is leaking out the front of it because i didn’t put anything on that third block here we go with an acacia trapdoor yes there we go all right that’s containing that a little better but if We wanted to for example swap the soul sand block here for a magma block we have the inverse water elevator we have one that’s just going to drag us straight downwards but i don’t tend to like building these with the magma block and here’s why first of all you take Damage if you land on a magma block if you’re not wearing frost walker boots which you shouldn’t be if you’re stepping into a water elevator because you’ll just freeze all of the water sources and i guess you can avoid it if you hold crouch but that doesn’t feel Especially fast also while the soul sand bubble column will propel you upwards at a pretty decent speed the magma block bubble column pulls you down at a reasonable speed but not the fastest you can travel downwards vertically for that we have to turn to gravity since it is Possible to fall into a single water source and survive one of the things we can do is create a drop with a completely empty drop shaft except for a single water source at the bottom or even a waterlogged slab or some other sort of waterlogged block that’s going To allow us to fall into a single pixels worth of water and break our fall at that point i think the only way of descending vertically faster is to nose dive the ground with a lytra which i don’t think we’re going to be doing here In this cave but i think this column of drip stone actually feels like a pretty decent place to disguise an entrance to a water drop shaft so we’re going to take out the block here and probably put in something we can water look like a slab and obviously that dips us down Into this half block space but then we can just walk out onto the platform here and continue on our journey speaking of journeys the wandering trailer has dropped by so we’re just gonna see what he’s got all blue ice and he’s selling me drip stone in a drip stone cave which Is pretty much part of the course with the wandering trader i’m going to take the coordinates of this block here we’re at negative 10 26 11 30. okay that looks like about here behind this patch of pointed drip stones so i’m gonna dig straight down we should hopefully end up In the center of that drip stone column and not fall on anything that’s going to kill us nope instead we fall harmlessly into that water source perfect so now we have a way up and away down to get to the foreman’s platform all we need to do Is come up our water column we can do our business up here with the foreman we’ll probably open out this space a little bit more so that this area of rock here isn’t in the way but if we want to get back down all we need to do Is find the drop shaft over here drop in and bam we’re right here at the platform again that was a lot faster to fall than it was to come down through a magma block bubble column and it seems like the wandering trader is currently trying To drag his llamas up through it so uh i think we got a couple of leads to collect here we can add a couple of blocks of our own in here as well i’m gonna add maybe a couple of copper blocks mixed into the drip stone here to Kind of imply that this has been patched up as a more formal way of getting down from that top level but i like the fact that it’s a little bit more discreet and uses one of the features of the cave to our advantage for our final look at vertical player transport today we’re Gonna have to go a little further afield though so i’m gonna make sure my light tray is on and i’m going to head out in search of a swamp to see if we can find some slime okay welcome to the swamp biome this is quite far away actually i had to go Looking for coordinates of one that i’d found before and i found this one about 3 000 blocks away from spawn the first thing you should know is that slimes do not spawn on a new moon so unfortunately we’ve come here at the worst possible time to find slimes they will spawn on The surface in swamps most nights but unfortunately when there is a new moon that means no slimes will spawn here whatsoever so i’m gonna try and track down the materials that i need to make a bed i see some sheep over here in the neighboring savannah biome because we’re Gonna have to skip the night and wait for a night on which the moon is at least a crescent in order to get any slime spawns whatsoever so with night having fallen let’s step out of the little hidey hole i made myself on this tree and let’s probably spawn cycle this Swamp we’re gonna fly away for about 128 blocks make sure all of the other mobs in the area have despawned and we’re probably spawning lots of stuff in the caves below this ocean right now and then we’re gonna fly back towards the swamp where hopefully we should start to See some swamp mobs spawning specifically we are looking for slimes and we won’t find a great deal of them on this night because it’s only the first phase of the moon it’s only the crescent moon but here and there we might see a couple of large slimes spawning on the surface here’s one Although this looks like a medium-sized slime it’s still gonna break down into a couple of baby slimes all of which will give us slime balls if we kill them and having looting now means we get even more drops than we did before so we’re looking for enough slime balls to make a Few slime blocks we might have to wait another night here in order to get enough but it looks like we’ll at least have yeah we got seven from that one we’ll be able to spawn a couple more slimes before the night ends it’s a neat trick you can perform with your elytra If you want mobs to spawn in a specific biome to fly straight up as straight as you can until the mobs on the ground basically disappear except for the passive mobs and then as you come down drift down a little bit more slowly and you’ll notice that the mobs will spawn On the surface here before they spawn anywhere else we’re sort of manipulating the game’s spawning in the same way that standing up in the sky to spawn mobs at our hostile mob farm does unfortunately this stretch of beach nearby seems to have attracted the majority of the Spawns so it looks like we’re going to be waiting a couple more nights if we want to get a decent encounter with a lot of slime the next night is the half moon and sure enough we have a couple of slimes spawning down here in the swamp Right now they’re behind these trees and i have to pick my way through the skeletons and stuff in order to find them but there’s one right here there’s a little baby one down here and a larger one right next to it but along with the increase in slime spawns comes An increase in armored mobs mobs that can pick up items and also zombie reinforcements because the phase of the moon actually contributes to how difficult the game’s encounters become i’ve also got a zombie villager down here wearing a pretty unfamiliar outfit this is a swamp villager and if we cured Him we’d get a villager wearing this purple coat with a big leaf on his head and i think in future we are going to start a village in a swamp just to take a look at the villagers all wearing those outfits but for now i’m happy with Just a couple more slimes spawning we’ve got a large one over here which means it’s gonna break down into even more small slimes which are the ones that actually drop the slime balls we need so i’m just gonna take care of this one and then we’ll probably head back to the Cave base to work on our final player elevator okay i might have found a slightly larger swamp biome on my way back to my base so i think we’re going to stick around here for a minute or two especially since just killing that one large slime has netted us about twice as Much slime as we had before so to build this we’re going to need a couple of pieces of redstone thankfully we have a bit of that and some non-pushable blocks the cheapest to make of which are probably furnaces then we’re going to turn these slime balls into slime blocks We’ll only need four of those and we could build this with more it’s just that four is a convenient number we’re going to come over here and we’re going to build a kind of slime bounce pad that’s going to take us from down here at the floor level of this platform that We built at our entrance up to the next level here which is only a short distance these aren’t exactly intended for long distance vertical travel but it can be a fun way of getting from one area to another so i’m gonna get rid of all of the water sources in this area as Well just so we have a little bit more room to work and in a two by two area right here we’re going to have four slime blocks inset into the floor with some furnaces around the outside if we’re being especially fancy about this we can place the mouths of the furnaces Facing in towards each other so we don’t actually see that these are furnaces at all then in the center here we’re going to place our four slime blocks and we’ll need to save a little bit of the redstone dust and some iron and stone for a sticky piston with a sticky piston Underneath these four slime blocks every time the sticky piston is activated let’s make a lever to demonstrate this the slime blocks are gonna be pushed upwards and when that happens they’re going to bounce anything that’s on top of them whether that’s an item entity a mob or the player even just throwing Items with a little bit of momentum onto slime blocks you can see how much they bounce and if we place these facing downwards like so they should all form into a stack in the center once we pull the lever they actually get bounced up Pretty high what i want to do is place a couple of stone slabs leading up to this so it has a natural step up and then we’re going to use these stone for a couple of pressure plates we might actually put two pressure plates in here One there and one there so items falling onto these won’t activate it but mobs or players will this will send a redstone signal into the two furnaces here and with a redstone repeater attached to that we can activate the sticky piston on a very short delay allowing us to run Onto the platform and be bounced up onto the next level we’ll put the repeater under here with four ticks of delay which is the longest time we can give it really and now as we run up onto this platform after a brief moment it catapults us up to the next level we can Also jump down onto the slime block from that platform since the slime blocks will actually break your fall from more or less any height although they will bounce you a certain fraction of the height that you fail so if you’re dropping from the height of the world You’re going to be bounced up about 100 blocks or so but naturally this means we can install a few of these around the place and we can make them look as high-tech or as low-tech as we want to but they’re going to be interesting ways of getting up small inclines like this Because this bounced us really about five blocks up into the area it’s not nearly as impressive as it looked with the items but it does the job if there was another platform over here we wanted to get up to we could chain together another set of bounce pads and Effectively it gives us a way of leaving this wooden platform and immediately getting up onto the next level without having to do all of this awkward jumping around so now we’ve got a few more of the practical options installed here i think it’s time to work on the less Practical ones the ones that are just here for the aesthetics of this whole area so i’m going to spend a bit of time drafting up and building a crane design over here that’s going to move a heavy goods platform up and down from this area here it’s not going to be a Practical working one it’s not going to involve a whole bunch of redstone because that would over complicate things we’re just going to have this look like it is a functional area they use to transport cargo hey folks welcome back so i’m pretty happy with the way the crane is going so Far obviously it’s floating a little bit right now and weirdly i have kind of been building this thing from the top down i wanted to make sure that we got the scale right for the kind of crane that would be lifting a platform like this which is a mostly circular thing Yeah a rectangle with the corners cut off more or less but i decided that we’d be pulling up ores and copper blocks from the world below from the surface down there and we’d be bringing them up to the top here where they’d be loaded into you know wheelbarrows or cargo Wagons or whatever and eventually make their way out to the surface i decided that we were going to have this supported by some pillars with tracks on and i’m using the grindstone workstation here as though it’s kind of like a wheel that guides the platform up the track Hence why the crane is kind of lifting the platform from the center instead of from anchor points at the four sides and why the cargo is safe around the outside with a couple of trapdoors keeping it there in place the crane arm there is made out of deep slate from polish deep Slate actually which i thought looked like one of the more industrial sets of blocks and i wasn’t entirely certain about the texture of it it kind of tiles with that bevel around the outside that solid line kind of indicating where each block is but honestly now that i’ve been Building with it for a while i don’t mind it all that much i also liked the addition of this extra cab for the driver the crane operator in there and i don’t really know a great deal about cranes so this was kind of an education I based all of this on a google image search that came up with a crane from another game called anno 1800 i’m not that familiar with the game itself but i kind of liked the style of the crane it seemed industrial enough but perhaps you know dwarven enough to fit our purposes We’ve also got a campfire up there with a slab over the top so we’re actually blocking the light coming from the top of there with the campfire there’s actually a light behind some walls there from a torch and i put a blast furnace up in there as well and i think one of The cool things we could do if we wanted to add a bit more life into this as a contraption is set up some kind of system maybe concealed within that warped wood structure there which randomly decided to feed an item into that blast furnace so that every so Often maybe on some kind of long timer the blast furnace turned on and then we could eliminate all light sources from this thing entirely but give the blast furnace a burst of light every so often again and make it look like this machine was actually running but as you can see The rest of this is constructed out of a bit of warped wood back there just for a touch of color and i’ve added warped buttons around there as well mostly polished deep slate and spruce wood plus some barrels barrels are really good medieval filler items if you’ve got the Kind of medieval fantasy inspired vibe throwing some barrels in there they look like mechanism components we’ve got some up there as well as though cables are kind of wrapped around with the metal straps around the outside of a barrel they’re just a really good nicely detailed block that works perfectly in Situations like this eventually we’re going to create a base for this a kind of pedestal for it to stand on but right now as you can see it’s kind of hovering over the entire thing and maybe it’s holding up its own weight just by this platform here kind of weirdly the last Thing i wanted to cover in this episode is as you probably can tell from the fact that i’ve only got 12 levels right now i died for the first time in this series and it’s not something i need to make a big deal about because this is Not a hardcore series or anything we can respawn as many times as we want and thanks to the fact that i had established a nether portal network it was pretty easy to just throw on some gold armor run my way back through the nether get to the point where i died Which was actually over here i believe a creeper just fell on me from up there in the little alcove up there that i have now lit up with a torch and it just dropped directly on me and i couldn’t really do anything about it i just ended Up dying whilst i was in my inventory crafting these warped buttons it blew out a section of the bridge which meant some of my items fell in the water but i came back here pretty quickly recovered them all fine and that was it really uh it didn’t even happen on camera Unfortunately i have no footage of it but if i go to my statistics right now and go to mobs you will see that a creeper has killed me one time i still think i have a pretty good kd against these creepers but just for once the Creepers managed to score on me but that is really all i wanted to cover for this episode of the minecraft survival guide and i think we’ll probably do an episode relatively soon about how to recover from deaths like that if you find the need to recover from a death like that But as it is that’s where we’re going to leave this episode about player elevators these are of course not the only designs that you can expect from player elevators in this series i just want to get people’s imaginations working about what is possible and what is relatively simple to construct at This stage in the game we can work on like redstone flying machines and more mechanical elevators a little bit later on but for now thank you so much for watching this episode of the minecraft survival guide my name has been pixelriffs don’t forget to leave a like On this video if you enjoyed it subscribe if you’d like to see more and i’ll see you folks soon take care bye for now you Video Information

The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2 continues! Today we improve our Dripstone Cave base with a bit more vertical access. This tutorial will show you how to approach vertical transport in areas where flying around with Elytra is less of an option! We look at how to decorate more basic options like ladders and scaffolding, then move on to more fun options like soul sand bubble column elevators and slime block bounce pads! We also look at slime spawning in swamps and how it is affected by the moon, start on a cargo crane for the dripstone cave mine, and I die for the first time in the series.
